Poetic Closure

Well worth reading
This is an excellent book, one cited extensively in current studies of narration and closure, even though this text is nearly thirty-five years old. Though it purports to deal with closure in verse, many of its principles are applicable to fiction in general. Torgovnik's *Closure in the Novel* (1981) sets out to do for novels what Herrnstein Smith has done for poetry, but the later book is not nearly so rich in analysis and suggestion.

A note on finding it used though. There are currently used copies listed here at very steep prices ($... to $... dollars each). This book is available at used bookstores for more in the neighborhood of $...to $.... There's even a copy listed now through BookFinders at just under $.... It's also available in all university libraries, to tide you over until you locate a copy of your own.

wonderful reading and browsing
Don't be discouraged by the awesome title of "Reader's Companion to U.S. Women's History." I found this book deeply engaging. Each article told me something I didn't know. I kept the book by my night-table, and dipped into it before I went to sleep. The editors have not imposed a deadly uniformity on the entries, but have encouraged a wide and diverse set of approaches. From the TWO articles, with different perspectives, on "feminism and feminisms" (followed by 17 -- I think -- different specific feminisms) to the story of Bessie Coleman under "Aviation" -- this book gives you a magnificent insight into women's history in the U.S.

A really, really really really, GREAT, SUPER-DUPER book
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a very, very great book. I don't see why anyone wouldn't want to read it. I mean it has everything: romance, fun, adventure, sad stuff, down-to-earth characters, or whatever else you might be looking for. But really, this story one you read and then forget about. It really stays with you and makes you look at life in a different way. I know that I am a different person after reading this book.
Anyway, now that I told you how truly wonderful this book was, here's a summary: This book is mainly about Francie Nolan, an eleven year old girl growing up in the slums of Brooklyn, New York. The book goes all the way up until like she's seventeen and the author does a good job of showing in an indirect way just how hard her life is. Sometimes her family doesn't even have enough to eat, and instead of going to high-school, Francie has to go get a job. Plus she has to deal with many problems in her family.
I loved this book because of Francie's courage and strength and because the author knocked down the typical stereotypes about people living in slums. But what I really should have just said along time ago is you should just read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn instead of this corny review that lasted way too long.

Just as good the second time
When I was thirteen I read this book and loved it. I was Francie in my mind. We lived not far from Brooklyn and while not as poor, shared many of the same problems. The book has always been a fond memory for me. This month it was chosen as a group read for my reading group. Although I rarely re read, I decided to see if the book was as good as my memory said it was. To my delight it was still as wonderful as I remembered. Only this time I had a bit more sympathy for the mother Katie, then I did the first time. Seeing the book through the eyes of a mother, I admired more of the qualities I saw as harsh those many years ago. Betty Smith writes with such detail, that one can see the streets of Williamsburg as seen through Francie's eyes. The Nolan's are a family that literally lives the American dream. They start the book in dire poverty, yet each generation accomplishing more than the one before. And they have the most important gift of all, the love and support of family. Today this would no doubt be labeled a dysfunctional family, with an alcoholic father, a mother leaving her children unattended, an aunt who is a little too free with her favors. Yet we love the Nolans, and root for them through thick and thin. Francie Nolan loved reading and the library above all else. I am now the grown up Francie, still trying to read every book in the library. I am glad I took the time to re read this one. Francie Nolan will be a part of me forever.

...Wonderfully inspiring story......
A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN is a wonderfully inspiring story about a girl growing up in Brooklyn in the early 1900's. The main character, Francie, is quite an intellect and would rather read a book than play with other girls any day. Throughout the story we see Francie change from a girl to a woman. Along the way we meet two of the major characters of the novel; Francie's alcoholic father and hardworking mother. I would suggest this book to any girl age thirteen years and older. Although, I do not want to discourage anyone else from reading A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN, I feel that girls over the age of fourteen would be able to relate to this book better than anyone else. This novel was not very original in setting, but the content and deep analysis of each character and situation by Betty Smith is quite unique. The narration was, for the most part the third person limited perspective. Betty Smith sets a very realistic story, though a sad one at times. I think this book is quite a timeless classic. It is an absolutely wonderful story in the slums of Brooklyn, New York. It will be just as wonderful a novel fifty years from now as it was fifty years ago. It has a timeless essence that I could relate to in 1998, and some young girl will in the year 2048. I loved this book because it was a fastpaced book and kept me reading until the very end. I hope you will decide to read A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN, By Betty Smith, and love it as much as I did.

5+++++!
I am 13 years old, and when my dad started reading Junie B. Jones books to my five-year-old sister, it was just another book. Then, I actually started listening to them. Now, whenever my dad brings home a Junie B. Book, I am right there next to him. They are written to sound exactly like who they portray, a kindergartener. This is a must read for everyone with kids, big and small, in their house. It should be a crime to correct the grammar. (Yucky Blucky Fruitcake is one of the especially good ones.)

Junie B. Jones is a Wild One (...)

The name is B. Smith not Wannabe
I receive B. Smith and her work as very original, tastefully done, professional and with lots of flare and detail. She has an eclectic style, which I feel is smart in the sense that people of different styles (contemporary to modern) can connect with her. She's a phenonmenal women that wears many hats or should I say aprons. I've just learned she has highly acclaim and prominent restaurants in the New York area. If I'm not mistaken, I believe she has a restaurant located on Wall Street. That's pretty impressive. I have admired B. Smith's work for a long time and would definately say she's not trying to clone herself to be Martha Stewart,II. So, reveiwer from PA give Ms. Barbara (B.) Smith more credit than that... she's earned it.

Classy Lady
I have not purchased Riturals and Celebrations, yet. However, I plan to purchase it TODAY. B.'s books are hot in bookstores and running low on the shelves. I have no doubt that it is five star because she is a five star lady. I am an aspiring fan of B. and truly enjoy her TV program. It's all that and more. She definately has STYLE and CLASS. You go Ms. B.! P.S. I WANT HER MAGAZINE and can't find it. Can someone help me out? P L E A S E!

She has Style and it's all her own
This was a great book. It was not just a cookbook but it provided great ideas for entertaining. What a refreshing experience to find someone black, beautiful and creative providing great advise on entertaining. The reviewer from PA has it all wrong about this being another Martha Steward copycat. She has very little in common with M. Steward except they are in the same business. B.Smith provides her own style and appears to really enjoy what she is doing. One other thing she doesn't have in common with M. Steward is that she appears to be a very nice person inside and out.

Best Cavalier Book!
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in Cavaliers, from the pet owner to the breeder and show exhibitor. Full of specific information related to Cavaliers and personal anecdotes, all aspects of the breed are covered, including history, health, grooming, breed standard, breeding, and Cavaliers in art. Photos and/or drawings illustrate every page - show champions as well as informal photos show the charm of the breed. I have several books on Cavaliers, but this is the best, and the one that I always recommend to others.

EXCELLENT!
Any dog lover--but especially Cavalier lovers--will love this beautiful book. It is by far the most comprehensive book ever written about this wonderful breed. What a find! I highly recommend it.

Very nice book.
I Loved the cavalier art.
Good treatment of breed standard.
Superb pen & ink illustrations to show breed standard. What artist did these?

An excellent Sourcebook in the Art of Auric Healing
This book is a must for anyone interested in laying on hands and in understanding the human energy field in general. Barbara Brennan gives substantial background information concerning the disease process and how disturbances and imbalances in the aura manifest in the physical body. She then gives in-depth techniques for correcting these problems on a holistic level, including lucid examples of the ongoing process of healing.

My only complaint about this book is that it fails to address the highly subjective nature of higher perception, but those who are aware of auras should be able to relate her way of seeing with their own.

Although it may not be the best introduction for the beginning healer, overall, this book is an excellent addition to the shelves of intermediate to advanced healers, and it will serve them for years as their practice of the healing arts continues.

A Classic & Essential Reference Book
I consider HANDS OF LIGHT to be an essential reference book for anyone who is seriously interested in exploring energy healing. I am impressed with the way author Barbara Ann Brennan describes her early childhood experiences of sensing energy fields around trees and all living things, and even more impressed that after many years of training in physics and western ways of scientism, she never lost her inner sense of knowing.

HANDS OF LIGHT includes many pictures of auras and chakras, which serve to illustrate her points about how to identify common personality types and relationship types based on her in-depth personal healing experiences. Brennan also proceeds to explain how to help improve one's health by working on one's energy field.

Full enjoyment of HANDS OF LIGHT requires that the reader either have an open mind regarding the fact that many people can see auras and chakras, or the ability to see these things oneself. Brennan provides exercises to help people learn how to see energy fields, so any reader with a sincere interest in the subject of energy healing will most likely be very satisfied with this classic book.

Essential reading for Lightworkers
This incredible book is probably the most amazing thing you will ever read, whether you're experienced in energy work, or just starting out. It's one of those books that, as you read it, you watch various aspects of your life simply slot into place. It gives you access to the bigger picture.

I have bought copies for many friends of mine, all of whom agree that the content is mind-blowing and life-changing. Barbara Ann Brennan is truly an angel sent to lead us gently and compassionately to the Light, and yet she seems so, well, human! and normal. The book will teach you so much about yourself, the Way Things Are, and guides you in your personal growth, allowing you to discover your true purpose. Yet it avoids that nasty pious, patronising tone that so many self-development books tend to have.

I believe this is essential reading for all Lightworkers, and will motivate and inspire you to learn more.
