GEOMETRIES OF THE MIND
One of the few authors in recent history who knows the occult, horror and hard science. One of the best reads of this decade.

This is the best horror/sci fi book that I have ever read!
This book is the best horror/science fiction/psychological thriller that I have ever read!

I have never been one for the 'Horror' or 'Science Fiction' genres. I enjoy taut thrillers with intense psychological suspense that also give powerful imagery. Not only did I find these qualities in this first 'Horror/Suspense' book of Keller's, but the story line was so dramatic and mind shattering, that I couldn't put it down. I HAD to finish the entire book in two days. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys literate, extremely well written 'Horror/Suspense/Sci-Fi' or even 'Psychological Thrillers,' since this book combines all of them masterfully. Sounds impossible, I know, but it does just that! It literally opens the mind to other worlds and other possibilities, and does so through a dynamic story line. I can't praise it enough, and can't wait for his others to come out. In fact, I enjoyed it so much, I did what I have never done before for any other novel: I purchased thirteen copies for family and friends! I also wrote a review of this book on other .coms as well. Finally, this book is just plain fun to read, too!

Baby Bert is a hit!
Normally, our twins love Elmo books the best, but this is one of their favorites. The book is fun to read aloud and is easy to hold and turn the pages. The simple text and pictures are clear enough for them to understand without a lot of clutter. I often find my daughter flipping through the pages by herself and she's only 18 months old.

A Favorite of All
My one-year-old son loves this book. All his friends who come over love it as well. When I finish reading it and start reading another one, they hand the book back to me so I can read it again. Great pictures they can relate to (crib, shirt, socks, banana, etc.)

Great book!
I love the Great Bread Machine Recipes book. I not only use it all the time but I also buy it as gifts for those that have bread machines. It's excellent. I would highly recommend it.

Great reference for any bread machine user
We have many friends with bread machines, and use our own a fair amount. This is a book we all agree on, regardless of which kind of machine we use.

The opening section has information on types of bread machines and conversion tables to figure out how to adjust a recipe, if you need to. This makes the book useful regardless of which machine you use. It also lists various problems people tend to have when using bread machines, and lists ways to fix each one.

The recipes are delicious! My copy of the book has a permanent crease on the Italian Bread recipe, which I make all the time. It lists a nutritional analysis for each recipe, so you know exactly how many calories, sodium, fat, etc. are in the bread. There are cheese breads, herb breads, oat breads, sourdough, you name it.

If you're looking into a bread machine, or have one already, be sure to get this book!

It never leaves my desk
While it seems like a large chunk of change, this book is worth every penny. Ever since I've purchased it, many of my colleagues (I'm a social scientist at KU) ask to borrow it, but I never let it go. Just about any question I have about qualitative research can be answered, to some degree, with this book. What's more, even in some of the more controversial areas of qualitative research the book points to other readings that may shed light on alternate perspectives.

Just buy the book. I did, and I don't regret it for a moment. It's also nice in that it covers a wide variety of disciplines and contexts -- journalists, sociologists, communicologits, psychologists, and political scientists can all use the book with equal ease. One area, though, that I've heard the book is not as strong toward is anthropology. If you're an anthropologist, you may want to check out Holstein's interviewing methods book.

Research Reviews Research Handbook
These knowledgeable and experienced authors have assembled cutting eduge chapters on the new dimensions researchers have available for doing quantitative research. Of special interest to this reader is the chapter on feminist research. A thorough and scholarly look at objective research in the area of gender issues. This should be of especial help to men who are trying to do a good job in writing and researching while examining their own possible biases. This is a "must have" reference!

The healing so needed
The need for the subject is enormous. We get so contributed by the book. We believe in respecting the human as a whole entity. The body reflects so much of our being that we need to understand and assess the meaning of the book. Let hope that an updated book will come soon. The conecction of mind and body reflects what is going on with the sociaty body and we need it very very much. Thank you.

This Book can only help. NOT Junk Science
When I first heard about this book from a friend, I thought that it was most likely 'Junk Science'. I was very happy to find that it is truly a valuable book. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is facing a serious illness. I think it is important to note that this book is not an alternative medicine philosophy book. I prefer to base my scientific beliefs on objective evidence

Herbal Drugs and Phytopharmaceuticals

A "must" for those interested in quality control of herbs
This is one of those rare books that is so well researched and written that it is difficult to have any negative criticism about it! This English translation by the late Norman Bisset is a fine example of how it is possible to apply sound scientific knowledge with traditional herbal medicine. The book consists of 181 monographs on medicinal plants. What makes this collection of monographs rather special is that firstly most of the monographs contain colour pictures of each plant photographed in its natural environment. Secondly this is followed by careful photographs of the dried plant used in commerce. Along side this are chemical structures of the main phytoactives aswell an excellent section on common adulterants, pharmacology, phytochemistry, microscopy and also often included is a colour tlc plate. This is extremely helpful for quality control in small importers or herbal manufactures or for those herbalists interested in simple analytical techniques. There is also sections giving the regulatory status of the plant in different countries aswell the inclusion of trade names or proprietary medicines that include the plant material in question. For example on Angelica archangelica there includes information on its use in Euvitan ®, Carvomin®, and many others. A must for those involved in scientific research on contemporary herbal medicines, a reference source for libraries or those interested or involved in quality control.

A detailed scientific look at herbs and their uses.
Translated from the German by Professor Norman Grainger Bisset, Department of Pharmacy, King's College, University of London, this large format, illustrated reference book covers 181 herbs that are used as teas or are components of herbal mixtures. The botanicals included were chosen based on a survey carried out in 180 German pharmacies. All of the herbal "drugs" in this book are "licenced" by the German government. The book is organized alphabetically by the Latin name of the herb, with an excellent subject index, that includes the English names in bold. Each herb listing, which is an average of three pages, contains the following information: illustration and description; common English name and scientific names; synonyms; place of origin; chemical constituents; therapeutic indications and historical use; side effects; making the tea; package inserts (includes dosage, mode of administration, interactions with other remedies); list of prepared rem! edies for consumers, including teas; phytomedicines: combined remedies containing the herb; diagnostic features of the drug; adulteration; citations to research. Each herb listing contains an abstract from the German Commission E monograph, which serves as a kind of snapshot. The "indications" feature gives a detailed history of the herb's use, from the clinical and empirical point of view, and is designed to link the doctor or pharmacist with additional research. The "List of Indications" index is particularly useful, describing conditions such as Coughs, Menstrual Disorders, and Kidney and Bladder Disorders, and listing herbs that have been used to treat them. The list makes a distinction between "folk" medicines and more standard medical herbs. Hundreds of color plates illustrate both the whole plant and the dried herb. This detailed, scientific look at herbs will be useful for physicians, pharmacists, herbalists, and manufacturers. from Healt! hInform the newsletter

Most readable and comprehensive preservation book
For the past seven years I have worked full time as a historic preservation professional, compiling historic resource surveys, writing nominations for the National Register of Historic Places, and a wide variety of other preservation related projects. I serve on our local historic district commission and have just completed a city-wide survey of Kalamazoo's historic resources. Currently I am also teaching Historic Preservation at Western Michigan University and I was delighted to find Norm Tyler's book. This book is an excellent resource for the beginning preservationist, whether they be a student in a formal academic setting or someone who just likes old buildings. My students find it to be very readable and comprehensive. I am especially pleased to find the variety of real-life examples Tyler presents reflecting the way preservation is practiced and not just idealistic theory. This book was the preferred Christmas gift among preservationists in my area in 2000. I can recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone interested in preserving our history.

Historic Preservation: A Fresh View
Norm Tyler's new book is a much needed addition to the literature on Historic Preservation. Loaded with fresh examples of the myriad preservation activities taking place across the nation, it also details the context of the movement through analysis of the icons, both human and idealogical, of historic preservation. Clear, concise, and very readable, it will appeal to both the professional and avocationist alike. The inclusion of basic economic, social, and architectural impacts in historic preservation are welcome contributions, and the various charts and lists are extremely useful. I use it at the graduate level as the companion to Fitch's classic: "Historic Preservation."

Brilliant.
I recently read Hob aloud to two kids (10 and 12) and we all had a ball. Every single time one of the kids had a question Mayne answered it in the very next sentence. He seems to have an almost magical understanding of the way kids' minds work. Hob's particular take on the world has warped us forever

An adventure in the story, language, the wonderful lettering
As one who works in a school, I can now scarcely wait for school to start so I can share this with the kids. The imaginative langauge used to describe inanimate objects as Hob sees them opens new ways of viewing the world. The adventure comes full circle and by the end of what could have been, but isn't, a very pat goblin it is impossible not to want a Hob around the house. The letters used to begin each chapter are alone worth the price of the book. This is one book that I can't imagine not reading again and again for a new look at the world.

The HongKong Shanghia Bank
This fantastic book is almost impossible to put down. It follows the tale of the Bank from initial studies, through the invited international competition, design development, bidding, and construction. The challenges of building the "most expensive building ever built" in the middle of South-East Asia involved manufacturing and engineering feats usually reserved for aerospace of military efforts. The book really describes how the design concept responded to the realities of the program and the construction procedures and how Foster's office and others staged the monumental task of getting the building completed. Everyone involved claimed that it was the project they had been training for their entire career.

Great saga about the construction of an incredible building
Possibly the greatest work of art by the famous British Architect Sir Norman Foster, this review takes you step by step through the entire process of design, planning, and construction. At it's time the most expensive building on earth, Williams' book is a tour-de-force and should be a must read for every budding young architect. Seek it out and buy one now if you can (I bought 5 copies to give to my friends)
