A Diamond in the Rough
Sid Hite expertly weaves comedy, romance, and Americana in this novel. It is a book that can be enjoyed by adults and children alike. The characters are truly colorful, and Hite's command of the English language is unique. Check it out!

Dither Farm: an excellent book with great character!
Dither farm is truely a work of art. The simple folk in this book are both laid-back and witty. It's no wonder with names like Flea Jenfries. Such a lavishly discripitve book has never been written. I storgly reccomend this book, I assure you it will become quite well thumbed.

A TOUCHING PERSONAL INSIGHT INTO LIFE DURING THE WAR.
THE MORE I READ OF THIS BOOK, THE HARDER IT BECAME TO PUT IT DOWN. I FELT A PART OF THE WRITER'S EXPERIENCES, FRUSTRATIONS AND LONGINGS. READING A BOOK LIKE THIS PUTS ME INTO THE LIVES BEING DESCRIBED AND EXPOSES ME TO THE HEARTBREAK THEREIN. VERY TOUCHING AND ONE THAT I WILL READ AGAIN. MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE SUFFERINGS OF MARION AND AMANDA AND THEIR FAMILIES.

History from the mouth of a common soldier
This simple farmer who went to war wrote letters home to his wife and child describing what his daily routines were in the army, including the homesickness and heartaches. The daily truths he describes make it hard to idealize and glorify any war.

Great insight into hardships of war from a soldier's view.
If you want to know what it was like to be a soldier in the Civil War, read this book. It gives incredible insight into the day to day hardships that a soldier faced. It is an emotional journey that presents the pride of fighting for a cause and the heartaches of leaving ones family.

An Entertaining Read!
From cover to cover, Lottie's adventures are numerous and serve to make her story exciting and her character multi-dimensional. In Lottie's search for her family, her rightful position in free society, and even an understanding of herself, she remains engaging and relatable. Her struggles and triumphs set the moral and emotional tone of the story, and the setting of Civil War Virginia impeccably places it within its historical context. The reader thus not only witnesses Lottie's endeavors, but also receives a glimpse of the larger historical events influencing her world. Factual and fun, Lottie's Courage is a most entertaining read!

Jamie's Review on Lottie's Courage
Lottie's Courage was an intriguing book with many exciting, as well as touching scenes about two runaway slaves and their adventures. Though fictional, it contained a lot of real information about the Civil War which I didn't know very much about. Even though it was sad in parts (it almost made me cry), that was part of what made it so good. Though the whole book was terrific, I would have to say my favorite scene was when a balloon came down and saved Lottie and Weza from the terrorizing dogs that captured slaves. It's hard to believe that someone can do such outstanding writing. Exellent Job!

Lottie charms and inspires!
Lottie's Courage is an inspiring story of a young girl's journey to find her freedom, her family and herself. A smooth blend of accurate historical details, drama and moral issues swirls about this emerging heroine. And she is such a charmer! Clear period illustrations and a glossary add another dimension and make this book useful as a classroom resource. An exciting story, but not overwhelming for the young reader...welldrawn, memorable characters...intriguing plot based on actual fact!

Great Resource
For my senior seminar, I wrote a paper on desegregation/busing in the South. While I was doing research, a librarian found this book for me. I had to wait 2 weeks to get it through interlibrary loan, but it was worth it!! The essays really bring home the complexity of Southern desegregation when viewed through the lens of class issues. I can only aspire to produce such insightful scholarship!

TKE-- THE UNTOLD STORIES
WHAT A CHARMING PIECE ON THE ANTEBELLUM SOUTH. CRAFTED WITH PURE GENIOUS AND A PEN FOR DETAIL, "THE MODERATES' DILEMMA" BRINGS TO LIGHT THE UNDENIABLE OBSTINANCE OF THE SOUTH'S PREMIERE SCHOOL DISTRICTS.THIS WORK IS A MUST READ FOR HISTORY GRADS OF ANY BACKGROUND.

A book whose magnitude is monumental.
Matthew Lassiter, editor-in-chief of this seminal collection, sets forth, once again, a fresh standard of scholarly excellence and eloquence. His essay, "A 'Fighting Moderate,'" illustrates one of his innumerable intellectual virtues, the ability to electrify his arduously acquired historian's sobriety with an innate psychological acuity.

An excellent book! And a gift with words...
I can't wait to pick up my very own copy of this GREAT book by Virginia Kantra, so I can re-read whenever I want. THe characters are intriguing and sometimes it just AMAZES me the way an author can describe things!VK shows such a gift with words, and I don't want to give much away, but on pp. 14-15, part of her description had me LOL: "...his masculine charge lit her screens up like incoming missiles over the desert."

I just LOVED this book! What's next from this talented new author? I can hardly wait!

Matthew Dunn is a wonderful romance!
Virginia Kantra has created one terrific romance, and an equally terrific hero. Ms. Kantra creates characters that linger in your mind long after you finish the book. Don't miss this one!

Top notch characterization makes for a real page-turner!
It's hard to believe that THE REFORMING OF MATTHEW DUNN is Ms. Kantra's debut book. With great wit and a unique talent for turning a phrase, Ms. Kantra is sure to draw a big following. Both Matt and Clare are likeable characters, truly modern in their thinking and actions. You'll feel you've known them all your life, which means you're guaranteed to read this book in one sitting in order to find out what happens to them! I can't wait for the next book from this gifted new author.

Great Book
My Daughter really isn't into reading at all but "Send One Angel Down" has changed her mind. The story really kept her going and for once she enjoyed reading a book and now she doesn't complain about reading a book for school reports.

Send One Angel Down
"'Why do I look like I'm in the middle? Not as dark as you or as light as them. A different color altogether. What does that make me?'" When you look in the mirror and you see you, do you know who you are? Life has more secrets than we know about. In the book, Send One Angel Down, Eliza and her cousin, Abram, live every day of their lives trying to find out who they are and what their job in life is. Along the way, they encounter many problems that get in the way of their dreams. When Eliza is old enough to understand that she is different from the other slaves because of her pale skin and bright blue eyes, she wonders why she is so different. Her older cousin, Abram, tries to keep the details of her background from her because he wants to protect her from the pain and harsh realization that come with that background. Eventually, Master's daughter, Abigail, goes too far with her comments about Eliza's being different and Eliza forces Abram to tell her about her background. Once he tells her, Eliza doesn't want to believe him but she knows that Abram wouldn't lie to her. As Eliza grows up, Abigail becomes jealous of the young slave's beauty and tells Master Tuner to put Eliza out in the fields. Being out in the sun only makes Eliza's beauty greater and Abigail becomes even more jealous. To calm his daughter, Master Turner puts Eliza on the auction block. Abram and Aunt Charity, who is Eliza's mother, sneak out of the fields to watch the auction. At the auction a man, the "Swedelander" and a buyer from New York bid on Eliza. Who will buy Eliza? What will the man from New York do with Eliza if he bids highest on her? What about the Swedelander? What will he do with Eliza if he bids highest on her? If you like historical fiction, this is the book for you. What I liked about this book were the sub-plots that occurred and kept me interested in the story. Most readers will enjoy the way the author showed the strong bond between Abram and Eliza. Any teenager, boy or girl can read this book and stay interested because each character's thoughts are expressed in a thoughtful way. A 5-star book!

Young slave girl confronts the horrors of her existence
I really enjoyed this beautifully written, deeply felt story of the young, mulatto slave girl Eliza, who, stuck between being black and white, must struggle to find her way in a world of strife, inhumanity and prejudice.

The lessons to be learned in these pages are as powerful as they are eternal. The author elegantly reminds us in this book that these lessons have yet to be fully realized.

An excellent read for young adults.

Heaven by V.C. Andrews
Heaven is part of a five book series by the author V.C. Andrews. This one is about the Casteel family. The main character is a girl named Heaven and the story is about her life. It tells how her West Virginia family is so poor and how hard thier lives are. Heaven is always looking to overcome this and prove to everyone that someday she will make it out of this town and have a better life. The story is so unbeliveable that people actually lived this way during the 1950-1960's. This book is for everyone who likes realistic fiction and can handle adult content.

Extremely pleased
I have read every single book V.C. Andrews has ever written. I started in 5th grade and I have never stopped. Dawn was the first book of hers that I have read. I have been hooked ever since. Her books show so much emotion that you can't help but fall in love with the characters. Dawn, Heaven, and Ruby, are all characters that as humans we can relate to. They all go through the hardships of life and love, but they have fun adverntures while doing so. Through these characters, it is possible to dream and live out your own personal fantasies. Visit places you've never been or share experiences that are beyond reach.

ITS SADISTIC.....but great!!!!!!!!
I first picked up this book when I was 13, and I couldn't put it down until I came to the last page. The series is compelling, bitter-sweet and I recommend it to anyone.

Very inspiring
I don't generally enjoy "feel good books", but this book really makes you want to be a better person. She is definitely a role model. This book provided an abundance of self-reflection, particularly as a parent. I strongly recommend this book to those who would like a glimpse into the attitudes of a great woman.

"carry on" dear women
A borrowed book originally, I am getting this one to keep! I can read any page and find something that encourages me to be a better mother, church-member, and Christian. Sister Hinkley is a model of practicality, faith in Christ, and a loving and supportive mother, companion, and grandmother. When you need a boost-- look at this remarkable women's example and you will be inspired to "carry on," as you are reminded of the most important things in life. This book is also a great example of a record of one's personal history.

A Feel Good Book!
What a wonderful book. When I heard that it was coming out I knew that I had to get a copy. I am not at all disapointed! What a wonderful woman she is. She is such a great example. She makes me want to be a better mother, wife and friend! She makes you feel good about yourself, even though you have never met. What a wonderful couple she and Pres. Hinckely make!!

Tells of a fierce warlord in China
Fine color drawings by Nicholas Debon bring the Chinese topics to life. Warlord's Puzzle tells of a fierce warlord in China who receives a ceramic tile as a gift, but sentences the man to punishment when it's shattered. The artist poses an unusual contest as the solution for the problem.

Who can solve the Warlord's Puzzle?
The Warlord's Puzzle is a traditional Chinese tale that proves you do not have to have money or power to have intelligence. An artist gives a warlord a gift of a blue tile, and then drops it on the ground and breaks it into seven pieces. A contest is held that will reward anyone who can fix the tile, and the one who ends up solving the problem will surprise readers. The book has a mathematical twist because the pieces break in the shape of a tangram puzzle.

The author has found many ways to capture the interest of readers in this unique story. First, the characters of the book come alive through the beautiful pictures. Each page is rich in color and shows the emotions of the characters throughout the story. The words on each page are also arranged in unique ways to help give emphasis to the text and interest readers. Some of the phrasing of the sentences is difficult for young readers to understand, so some explanations may need to be given while reading. Overall, this is a very interesting and creative book that could lead into many different types of discussions.

Delightful, gorgeously illustrated picturebook story.
A Chinese warlord receives a ceramic tile as a gift and promptly sentences the artist who made it to death when the title is shattered into seven pieces. The desperate artist proposes that a contest be held. Whoever is clever enough to put the tile fragments back together will be asked to live in the warlord's palace -- and his own life would be spared. After an enormous multitude of people fail at the task, a little peasant boy figures out a novel and unexpected solution. Virginia Pilegard's The Warlord's Puzzle is a delightful, highly recommended picturebook story that is gorgeously illustrated with the full color, museum quality artwork of Nicholas Debon.
