Excellent and Informative
This book is a great companion for anyone hiking in Shenandoah. Each hike gives a very accurate description of the trail along with the degree of difficulty and elevation changes.

Excellent and succinct guide
The guide is excellent. It is very well organized and very clear. I've hiked atleast 15 hikes following the guides in this book. A very, very worthwhile investment for the serious to occasional hiker.

"Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway" is an excellent guide
As a child, I first hiked trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway with my father more than 40 years ago, and over the decades I've continued to return with a sense of awe at the area's spectacular beauty and rich seasonal variety. But what has been lacking for all of that time is a trail guide that mixes knowledgeable commentary and accurate descriptions with good topographical maps and photos. "Hiking the Blue Ridge Parkway," which I picked up just last week on the way to the mountains, now fills that void in exemplary fashion.

I've hiked a good many of the trails, but I was surprised and pleased to see that there are many that I've not yet tried-and now plan to experience. I can attest that my favorite hikes are described very accurately, with historical and geographical commentary that gives me a new appreciation for some of the places I thought I knew quite well. Details such as the topo maps, elevation gains, difficulty levels, and key-points lists really open up the trails for both beginners and experienced hikers. A 38-page Parkway mileage log at the back of the book is a handy reference for trails, facilities, and resources. I'm sure that this book will accompany thousands of hikers who want to get the most out of their Blue Ridge Parkway hiking experiences.

Hiking Along The Parkway? This Is The Guide To Buy
As someone who lives near and regularly hikes trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway, I commend Randy Johnson's excellent "Hiking The Blue Ridge Parkway." First, I love the author's dedication . . .

To past and present Appalachian families - the people who know how much you have to love the mountains to make a living there. And to the men and women of the Blue Ridge Parkway - who help the rest of us appreciate why it's worth the effort.

It shows the author's love, and indeed respect, for the region he so ably writes about.

As a guide, the book features 72 maps, the great majority of them, 68 by my count, being detailed topographic maps that will satisfy even the most serious hikers. The author has included a topo map for virtually every hike, something that is fairly unprecedented in this book genre. I've never understood how you can have a trail guide that expects people to read a trail description without a map to look at. The book also includes lots of good photos.

I appreciate the fact that the author provides broad cultural, geographic and historical overviews aimed not only at educating the reader about the region but also at explaining how to craft a hike to match the hiker's interests.

The mileage log in the rear of the book also provides travel information and observations that make this back-of-book section almost worthy of a separate guidebook itself.

Moreover, the author not only covers trails along the Parkway but also trails near the Parkway. The summit of Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak in the Eastern United States, for example, is five miles off the Parkway, but thankfully the author covers the beautiful trails there. The book also includes the region's only truly urban hike, Asheville's Urban Trail.

Between the book's overall introduction, its maps and photos, and the travel-oriented introductions to the different sections of the Parkway, this book truly lives up to the claim in the book's subtitle, "The Ultimate Guide to America's Most Popular Scenic Roadway."

No wonder best-selling author Robert Morgan, who hails from this region, and Blue Ridge Parkway author Harley Jolley, both quoted on the cover, say this is the guide book to buy. If I had been able, I would have given this book six stars.

Legal Survival Guides
This is a sure fire way for MD., VA., & DC residents to learn how to file their own divorce cases. If you don't have a phone, you may not have a lawyer, but if you can read and follow instructions and you have the cost of this book, you can, if certain requirements are met, be your own lawyer and lean to obtain your own uncontested divorce.

This came along at just the right time!
I had decided that enough was enough, but was concerned as to whether I could be on my own and still take care of the children. After reading the information provided in this book, I realized that there were legal ways to make my husband help. I was not interested in destroying his life----just taking our children and starting over. Having information that was specific to my state of Virginia gave me the cnfidence I needed to move forward and talk with an attorney.

Hurray For Christopher! by Virginia Langley
Excellent for my summer program! It should teach children to be proud to be from the state of Maine. It also teaches children to be proud of their heritage, no matter what it is. We have Coon cats visiting us at the library. I can't seem to find any information about the author and would like to know more about her, where she is from etc. We have other books by her and are certainly keeping them as I see they are out of print.

A wonderful book!
This childrens' book about the life of a sea-going Maine Coon Cat should be in the library of everybody who loves Maine Coons. Delightful illustrations and lovely story.

We Didn't Listen Then, But Now We Can With "I Have Spoken"
Any "red blooded" American citizen would surely have a "red face" from embarrassment after reading the compilation of words and speeches from original settlers of our beloved country in "I Have Spoken, American History Through the Voices of the Indians." From those documents so meticulously collected by Virginia Irving Armstrong and introduced in this book for all to read, one concludes that even here in America, an atrocious holocaust took place.

The book tells the truth. It will make you mad. It will make you sad. You will feel ashamed to belong to the culture that was responsible for the near extinction of the once prosperous, peaceful people who just wanted to live life as they had been taught by their ancesters. Simple and earth loving.

"I Have Spoken" should be offered in every school as a learning tool on an important aspect of our American history. We made a mistake. We cannot bring them back, but we can read aloud what they said and feel their spirits.

The photos that were included in the June, 1971 and August, 1972 editions are sadly not included in the most recent copies for sale now. It's more of an impact to see their faces as well as read their words. I hope subsequent issues will reincorporate those photos, especially of the ones of the Wounded Knee massacre. "...I will fight no more forever." Chief Joseph, Nez Perce nation, 1877.

non-violent words at beginning of colonization
We used this text at the University of Minnesota back in 1971 for a Native American History course. The book voices treaty interpretation and words used by Tribal representatives. I won't use the word "Chief's" because the Government did'nt always get the real leadership to sign treaties. But, we noted a lack of aggressive language at the beginning of colonization (east coast), but by the time we read text from treaties from the Plains Natives the verbage used more aggressive and warlike themes. Sum it up! Indians found the need to be aggressive and began to use words to voice their frustrations with negotiations with Government respresentatives.

Great Book That Will Bring Back Allot of Memories
This is a great book for your collection. It will bring back memories of your childhood and the past. The author did a great job of collecting memories for all of us to enjoy.

Amazing collection of photos from Abingdon!
This book has many interesting pictures of Abingdon's places, people and buildings. I particularily liked the photos of the MArtha Washington, Barter Theatre and old downtown. It made learning about Abingdon's history very interesting...not like reading a history book at all.

Great for a first visit!
The area of Williamsburg is large that if you are planning a weekend trip or a week's vacation, it's imperative to get a "lay of the land" before you go! This book allows you to do that!

This book helps you decide where to spend your time in this wonderful city: Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, Busch Gardens, Golf and Golf galore, not to mention the tons of shopping and restaurant choices to make!

A lot of people get fooled thinking that there isn't much to do in and around this town.....this book showcases all the different activities (and when the busy times are at each) as well as giving you a glimpse of what to do and not to do with the kiddos.

I highly recommend visiting this area .....and buying this book before you go!

the only guild you need
this is a wounderful and helpful book. It will make your vacation more fun than work. It has tons of great tips along with great prices. You can pick from hundreds of fun parks and musams right down to were you eat dinner. Whether you are a person that likes to have the whole trip planed before you leave or are very spontanouis you will love this very helpfule guild book.

Excellent source... More than a set of charts!
Very usable in it's small page spiral format. Flipping pages as one cruises north or south is easy, and takes very little space at the helm. The annotations indicating marina locations save looking in separate guides when a stopping point is desired. Some obvious side trips (e.g. Banana River) are omitted and would have helped increase usefulness if included.

Excellent up-to-date reference
The charts are well organized and very reliable. Only a minimum number of aids were missing or changed in number. Some of the bridge info is a little dated but generally did not cause any navigational problems.

Best new civil war novel available.
Better than Cold Mountain, if you enjoy historical fiction from this era, you must read this book. It not only has fascinating and interesting characters, but the graphics of battle and intrigues in strategy make wonderful reading.

Best work of fiction on civil war I have read.
This book is so engrossing that I read it a second time immediately after finishing it. Through finely drawn characters and a marvelous economy of style, the author brings the Civil War home with immediacy. He explores all strata of society, and is especially effective in developing subleties in differing relationships between the races. If I could write a book about the Civil War, this is the one I would want to write, word for word.
