Three stars doesn't mean its bad, just average!
This book has both strengths and weaknesses. It is very good in my opinion in giving you an overview of how to create nice looking web pages in Frontpage 2000. The book is laid out in a logical fashion with easy to read text and lots of illustrations. Its disadvantages are that it only really gives you the basics of creating web pages. It is limited in that it shows you only how to work with the pull-down menus in the program itself. For more advanced stuff you will have to go to Matthew and Poulsen's FRONTPAGE 2000: THE COMPLETE REFERENCE.

Its an average book as I said. Got me generating web pages in an afternoon.

Worth Buying; A Big Help
This book was a big help to me in creating my own art website. I was combining lots of visuals plus accompanying text, all on a black cut silk velvet background of my own. Thus, I did not use one of the program's theme websites. I was being fairly ambitious in what I was trying to set up and this book got me most of the way there. The main reason I'm not giving it a 5 though is I still needed to call in my computer friend to help me when I still did not have a website which totally lined up right. She had to get the spacing worked out and get rid of the horizontal bar for me. I will admit, however, that computer knowledge also does not come easily to me. If you are looking for a book that can absolutely guarantee you will be able to build a website from its pages, this book is not it. However, I doubt any other book is it either as there are a number of bugs in the Front Page program itself that my friend had to fix for me that no book would have addressed. My friend didn't berate me for buying this book; she berated me for buying Front Page! My husband bought 2 other books for me from Microsoft directly on Front Page and they were not near the help this book was. If you've decided on using Front Page as your program, I'd go ahead and get this book. You're probably not going to do better.

Much easier to use than a typical reference guide!
I'm so impressed with this book I intend to purchase more in the series. While it doesn't have the depth of a 400 page reference guide, I'm sure most people will be much happier with the results from it. By being able to see, in colour, exactly what you're supposed to be doing, you'll learn things much faster. The book even shows pictures of the menus, and which option you need to choose in order to proceed with the desired function. I also liked the way the book picked the topics most people would want to understand better about Frontpage. Most people don't want to sell product and track inventory from their personal website. This book focuses on what beginners want to be able to do. For example, it shows you how to create a home page, how to make navigation buttons appear on top and different navigation buttons appear on the left of your page, and how to use photos and other objects in your web page. It also helps you understand the built-in wizards, and how you can use them to create web pages simply and quickly. Highly recommended!

Javascript Unleashed

A Very strong title for Developers
As a web developer, I found this book invaluable. The author covers such topics as interbrowser compatibility, the document object model, LiveWire and more. It is divided into well defined chapters with clear and easy to follow examples. This is NOT a book for persons looking for "I don't care how it works, gimme code I can slap on my web site". It is geared towards developers entering into web based development.

Review: JavaScript Unleashed - Second Edition
This has to be the best JavaScript refrence available. All the JavaScript is compatiable with version 3.x browsers to help you learn how to write for all web browsers. Also the Electronic library that is included with this title is very helpful. Recomended to ALL web developers who are using JavaScript.

Great book for heavy duty programmers!
Unlike the first 3 reviewers, I am a software engineer who LIKES TO PROGRAM. My complaint with other Javascript books is that they are too lightweight and there is not enough information besides how to make cute web pages. I consulted this book frequently during the development of a large project, and it never let me down. There was information on every topic I needed, and examples with enough substance that I could take it from there. This book spans the simple to the complicated, so you get a lot of value out of this book - this book will remain useful as your skills grow.

Your book provides limitless information on how to improve one's personal health and, really, one's quality of life. These sites opened my eyes to aspects of health I never knew existed! Good work!

An excellent resource! (Better than search engines)
Search engines hold a lot of information... too much information. This book cuts through all the fat and gets right to the good stuff. The problem with search engines is... you have to know what your searching for... well... I've found so many things in this book I never even knew existed so I would have never found them at some yahoo search engine. And the index makes everything easy to find. Well worth the bucks!

More Context Needed
With a book of this nature, it's hard separating an evaluation of the book from an evaluation of the technology itself -- so I won't try too hard. Yes, the book showed certain evidence of haste in editing and proofing but the errors and weaknesses are not of the type to cause an early adopter to stumble. For instance, there is no index but chapters are distinct enough so that it is easy to find the broad categories.

I eagerly picked up this book after attending a very impressive demo of Curl's capacities. Only skimming the two chapters on Object Oriented Programming, I concentrated on the other chapters most relevant to GUI developers of Web-based applications.

Being an ardent practitioner of the W3C's Cascading Style Sheets technology, I was a bit disappointed in Curl's implementation of styles, which seems clumsy and very limited, even considering the differences in syntax. The authors were very knowledgeable on HTML and CSS issues -- which made their reliance on tables for layout a bit disturbing. Does this indicate that Curl lacks equivalents for CSS positioning and layout properties -- or merely that the authors did not happen to see this as important enough to include in examples?

I was dissatisfied with the paucity of examples and the fact that these examples were not of the type of depth to glue the various parts of Curl together. There were some good examples involving 2-D and 3-D graphics which showed the technology to advantage. However, if your primary interest is in form-based Web applications, the examples were sketchy.

The book really needs to have context. Criticism of Java, HTML, JavaScript, etc. is not enough.
The authors must speak more directly to the questions:
{}Does the Web world need another proprietary, Java-like browser plug-in?
{}Does the Curl organization have what it takes to go against Microsoft's .NET, which has a similar architecture and revenue model?

Answer these questions and you not only have a good book, but a real cool winning tool.

Good book with a few warts
Curl is an important new client-side web language that permits you to create web applications that have the same rich interactive power of local applications (Word, Excel) while reducing the complexity that arises from using multiple existing web languages.

This is currently the BEST Curl book on the market. Ok, it's currently the ONLY Curl book on the market, which makes it Good News/Bad News.

Good News: This book does a great job of providing Curl information and "how to" examples in more depth than the Curl manuals. All the major topics are covered, which makes this a good overall reference book. The graphics architecture section is particularly helpful, where the authors describe the overall graphics framework of Curl. This info would save any new user time when learning Curl.

Bad News: by targeting the early adopter, the book is timely, but shows some warts. Some sections still show and describe the last beta version of Curl. The last beta was mostly similar to the current version of Curl, but the small differences are occasionally distracting. The book also has a number of typos and the class descriptions in one table were copied directly from the (free) Curl manual. As most of the authors are from Curl Corporation, this is not plagiarism, but it is not new information either.

Overall, this book serves its purpose by being the first overall book on Curl. The book itself is a great way to learn Curl in conjunction with the Curl manuals. Despite its warts, it is well worth owning.

[Bruce Mount worked as one of the Technical Reviewers for this book. No, he didn't review the section with typos. :-)]

Technology that may never take off
If you have never been to curls website and looked at this new web technology, you do not know what you are missing. In some ways, you can think of Curl as Flash on steroids, although you can do much more than the eye candy Macromedia is known for.

They call this book an early adopter book, but, since I think Curl is most likely going to go the way of Microsoft Agent, it is more a Bleeding Edge book. Unlike Microsoft Agent, however, I do think this technology is very useful.

So, what is Curl? Curl is a new OO technology for web UI development. In many ways, it is what Java promised, with applets, in its early days. The main difference here is Curl is designed to create dynamic, awe inspiring presentations (ala Flash) without a lot of work (once you learn the language, that is).

The book deals with Curl primarily as a UI development language. Through the chapters you will learn to work with 2d and 3d environments, multimedia and even dynamic client interaction. As with all Wrox books, there are plenty of code examples (all downloadable from the Wrox site).

I really love this book, although I wonder if the technology will ever really take off (Curl engine download is huge if you have a dialup).

More Depth Than It's Competition!
The other Web Matrix titles target rank beginners - including the MS Press web matrix book. WHERE THIS BOOK EXCELS: it quite simply provides more details, and depth, that the other web matrix titles. THe Web Matrix Developer's Guide is appropriate for folks who are beyond the "ASP 101" stage and want to learn more about Web Matrix as a tool (including mobile web development.) This is a book for ideas and insights!

Outstanding Web Matrix Guide
The author obviously saw beyond Microsoft's hype for this product and demonstrated the true range of the Web Matrix features in his book. The fancy pictures on the Web Matrix web site would have you believe that this is a training aid for ASP.NET. In reality, this is a cool tool that you can use for a variety of tasks.

I like the fact that every chapter has something interesting to do. Instead of saying that you can do data reporting, the author shows how to perform this task. Another chapter shows how to create your own controls and components, and then add them to the Web Matrix toolbox. The Web services information was interesting, but it's not something I'm using today. Even so, it was nice to know that it's there.

My favorite chapter has been mobile application development. It's something I hadn't thought you could do with Web Matrix until this book showed me.

The bottom line is that the author chose not to follow Microsoft's lead. This book tells you what you can really do with Web Matrix, which is actually a lot. The author also doesn't pull any punches. If something is broken or doesn't work quite right, he tells you about it and often provides a fix to boot.

Free is the Word!
All of the tools in this book are indeed downloadable for free (you should register the shareware). If you're like me and find the high price of Microsoft products a little difficult to swollow, then this book is very much worth looking at. The author has gone to great lengths to show you how to build a complete development system for free.

I found the author's writing very clear and understandable. He covers everything from simple Web pages to Web services. This book is a wealth of information about new and existing technologies including both XML and SOAP. The author also includes tips on how to modify the IDE for your specific needs, such as adding new controls to the Toolbox.

The inclusion of MSDE Query was a big perk because MSDE doesn't include any user interface. Using MSDE Query has saved me considerable time and expense.

The only thing that I don't understand is why you have to download Appendix B from the Apress Web site. This is actually one of the best additions to the book because the author shows how to extend Web Matrix to perform other tasks. The author told me about the appendix when I contacted him for additional information. The bottom line is that this book can save you both time and money.

Not worth it
The title sounds very promising but the text does not deliver.

The first two chapter are just a general introduction.

The actual comparisons are not in depth and the biggest surprise - Oracle gets just one mention!

Worth it
Good for novices and seasoned geeks alike, the author deals with the potentially tricky subject matter in a clear, thorough and authoritative way. Starting from first principles of database design, SQL etc, the focus soon moves on to detailed reviews of a number of the most popular tools and technologies available.

The book also has a companion website which is intended to keep the content up to date - a great idea but regrettably does not deliver on this promise.

All in all a worthwhile book and very valuable first resource for anyone needing direction in adding database functionality to their websites. Well worth the time and money.

Great overview for low- and mid-priced web-db tools
This book does an excellent job of comparing and contrasting a number of inexpensive or moderately priced web database tools. It also provides a great overview of web databases and web-db technology.

The best part is that the author builds the same two projects in every tool covered in the book (Filemaker, ASP, ColdFusion) to provide a good comparison for how the individual tools work.

Teach Yourself Great Web Design in a Week (Teach Yourself Series)

Good for novice bad for intermediate
A very "Graphic" book comprising of pictures and illustrations. Examples are excellent but lack the serious and more practical aspect of it. The cost of the book bears most of the colour printing and not the content of it. An excellent and inspiring choice for beginners but a rather long-winded version for the more serious ones....as stated behind the book.

Fancy page and great illustration

As usually, I first looked at the physical form of the book. I'm interesting with its full color design. I'm quite sure that this book is expensive enough. And I'm true, it's $49.99. I hoped that the content will equal with the price.

From the user level category at the back cover, I know that this book for New until Casual user. I wonder how it will explain about great web design for new user. After I read and passed chapter to chapter, I have plus mark for this book. It teaches the user how to layout the position of every object in the web page for nice looking purpose. With its full color figures, will make user enjoy their trip to great web design.

But, I have found one big minus mark for this book. It doesn't explain the syntax of HTML itself deeply. It just explains a few of HTML tags, and shows great figure of each example. If new user buy this book, he will be disappointed with the lack of HTML tag explained here.

Finally, for new user that had previous knowledge of HTML syntax or had the HTML Reference Book, buying this book is good for improving the knowledge of web page great design with nice looking. But for the truly new, it's not recommended to buy this book because its lacking of HTML syntax especially frame syntax. For $49.99 it's equal for full color examples and full loaded shareware programs for this book, but not for referencing HTML deeply.

Best Book for Newbies
Well-organized and packed with information, I heartily recommend this book. Unlike many "web design" books, the authors really know their stuff and show examples of really well-designed sites. Visually, this book is a treat to read. The authors keep it simple, while giving people the tools and "eye" they need to design appealing web sites. This book didn't waste my money, although I'm an experienced web designer.

This book is great for commercial advertising
When I read this book, I was confused on how beneficial this book would be to me. The CD has a lot of shareware software, but it does not tell me where to find any freeware software. Lot of these software require that you have registered with the online services like CompuServe, America Online, etc. This book is hard to follow for people who are new to the web.

Great Handbook for the initiated and experienced!
As a scientist and an engineer I found this book to be very helpful in comparing European methods of analysis and remediation with American ones. The book quickly scims the basics and gets right to the point in the second chapter. No time is wasted on extraneous defintions and explanations, you have to know about the topics and chemistry involved before this book gives you what it was written for.

Missed the point in many areas
This book looks like a very useful textbook, but upon ovening the cover it does not help with the advanced concepts of Designer. Many sections, especially chapter 3, were fraught with errors, and it appears that the text was not edited for content.

Excellent all-in-one book, but could use more on generation.
As usual, the authors have produced a very useful and easily readable work. An absolute must to those interested in using this tool, especially if upgrading from earlier version. I would have recommended a little less on methodology (well-covered in their book on Version 1.x of Designer/2000) and a lot more on generation. Success with this tool normally is determined by the quality of the generated output of Designer.

Excellent Book
I have significant experience in all aspects of system design using other tools (i.e. Visio) and am working toward an Oracle Master certificate as a Design Engineer, so I found myself bypassing many of the early chapters geared toward design methodology; however, for those with less experience they can be very useful.

The later chapters that get into the actual workings of the tool are well done and cover a good deal of information. I can agree somewhat with the other reviewers who say they would have liked to have seen a bit more on generation, but the Designer Generation book specifically does that. I definitely recommend the book--it's been quite helpful to me.
