A peak into the future
The i-Mode Developer's Guide shows you how the most popular and profitable wireless technology on the planet works, the business model, and is rich with examples. This is useful for anyone serious about making a wireless Internet business. It is not simply about Japan which is perhaps 2 years ahead of us in cellular market maturity. It is also a way to reach the new AT&T m-life market. Developers find how to tweak simple HTML to do i-mode. This is a base every wireless content developer MUST master. The book goes on then to explain and give examples of i-appli Java, and details of the emoji icons if they want to get tricky.
I absolutely love the attention to the excellent service examples and their technical explanations - consider i-area, the very smart location-based service in Japan. Developers are show the key emulators, how to develop ringtones, animations. It also puts SMS and WAP into perspective comparing service structures and microbilling differences.
This book is thoughtful and an incredible research report from the future in a difficult to access part of the world for most US and European developers who want to prepare for the future.

Quickly as well as efficiently build I-Mode pages
Users of the I-Mode Developer's Guide by Paul Wallace will be able to quickly, as well as, efficiently build I-Mode pages using their most familiar text editor. Following examples and instructions based on Wallace's successful experience, developers will create or convert images from other platforms, create animations and sound files, and develop dynamic database driven I-Mode applications and Web sites using common scripting languages such as Perl, PHP, and Java. Readers will also understand the relationship between I-Mode and other wireless technologies, and it's unique business model. An overview of several of the "killer applications" that have fueled I-Mode's success will further prepare the reader to create applications that take full advantage of the options of small screen devices. An exceptionally strong reference for Intermediate to Advanced level users.

Best Wireless Book in Print
Excellent overview of both the business and technology aspects of global wireless applications and services. Covers more than simply i-mode, and is simply THE most complete wireless/mobile Internet book I've read.

WAP is not coming back from the dead, so the future is HTML-based mobile applications. This book gave me both a foundation for HTML and XHTML wireless programming, as well as a the technical understading of handsets, location based services, and generating revenue. I wish all tech books were so comprehensive!

Stands the test of (Internet) time
When this book came across the desk, we thought "oh gosh, another out of date, get rich quick, internet how-to primer". Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Paul and Sarah Edwards seem to have a keyboard that turns whatever is typed into gold. The duo are noted for creating inspiring, hands-on, how-to books for the small time operator with big dreams, and this one is no different. In cyberspace, where one offline line year is the equivalent of ten online years, it is very difficult to write a book about the Internet that is not completely out of date by 3 p.m. the next day. This book though is one the few that can stand the test of time (or at least still be relevant next week).

The Edwards do the usual explaining, defining and exampling, but we were most impressed with their profiles. We visited several websites that were mentioned in the book and found all of them to still be in business! In the lightning fast "up and at 'em" today "down and out" tomorrow atmosphere of the Internet this was truly a surprise. It just goes to show-if those entrepreneurs read this book and are still profiting, than maybe you will too.

Chock full of inspiring real life success stories, you'd do well to give this read your full attention.

Excellent for the beginner who wants to become an expert....
I am relatively new to the world of web design and had never seen Dreamweaver before, let alone known how to use it. I am only halfway through the book right now but I feel safe saying that it is an excellent book. It is well laid out and full of information including notes, tips, warnings, and other tidbits to keep you wanting more. I really enjoy this book and am already looking into getting other "Bible" books if they are near as good as this one. The only reason I gave the book 4 stars is that I haven't read any other books on Dreamweaver and I am new to the program. But if you are anything like me, it's definately deserving of 5 stars! Hope you enjoy it.

This is a MUST Purchase
I am a novice web-designer, who began using Dreamweaver about 1 month ago. I bought the Bible, thinking that I would learn the "ins" and "outs" of Dreamweaver. Boy, was I wrong. I was treated to the most thorough and well-documented resource on web-design and internet technology that I have read ... in addition to learning EVERYTHING about Dreamweaver.

I really hate drudging through computer resource books. Going through this text was a true pleasure. I am a novice ... don't be intimidated by the price or the title of this book ... It is easy to read and highly invaluable.

It is a really great book for both beginners and pros!
This has been indeed been a great book! Its instructions were clear and sufficient as well as covering all the important possibilities ad variants. Each time I had a question in my head, I can be sure to find a paragraph that seems to address my question directly! What I also liked was the writing style, there were none too many "corny" jokes or "trying too hard to be funny" kind of prose and it got to the point in a straight and gentle manner. In fact, as a result of this book, I decided that I will only buy the "Bible" series of books!!! Which, I unfortunately found out, were not as good as Lowery's work. The Dreamweaver 3 Bible is a prize today because of Lowery's true deep understanding of his material! This book allowed me to learn the basic stuff at an advanced level (things I already thought I knew all about but....) as well as learn new advanced stuff! What I liked most about the CD that came with it was the pdf version of the book! Now I can carry the book with me in my laptop without having to lug the book around. That means when I am the move, I can still learn Dreamweaver or use it as a reference - thanks!

Great for Beginners
If you're just starting out with Flash, or even if you've been using it a while but haven't explored all its features, David Karlins' book will prove to be a useful addition to your library.

The things I like best about this book are

1. David has a friendly, uncomplicated way of explaining things, so it's all easy to "get."

2. You really could be almost a technological idiot and still be able to use this book to do some fun animations with Flash, because every tool and animation technique is covered, and each item is broken up into bite-size bits.

3. The Tips and Nitty Gritty Stuff is a good way of presenting useful key information that you can refer back to and refresh your memory as you need to.

4. Flash is fun to work with anyway, and breaking it up the way David does here makes the technical aspects of animating in Flash so easy to digest, you'll be a Flash wizard in no time.

Well, maybe not a wizard. This book doesn't cover much ActionScript, and that's where the real Flash wizards dwell. But as a way to giving you a solid foundation to all the ways you can have fun working with Flash, you could do a lot worse than to buy "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Macromedia Flash 5," and you'd probably have a lot less fun getting your basic Flash chops.

How to make Flash look Easy!
If you think Flash is too complicated to learn, then you might enjoy the approach taken by the author of this book: simple, funny, and easy to follow. And if you are already familiar with the basic concepts, then you can use it is a valid quick reference!

Complete Idiot's Guide to Flash
The book is easy to understand and very straight forward. The author obviously has teaching skills beyond the ordinary. Especially loved the bright orange and yellow tear out shortcuts page!

Great!
I am currently in college for computer programing and have read many books, some for college and some not. Between classes and homework time was a tight issue. Many books have alot of text, which can be hard to read all at once. With this book I could pick it up on any page that I was reading without having to backtrack and remember what has already been explained. This is extremly helpful because of the tight time. I am surprised how fast I learned the syntax of PHP, I think this was due to the pictures explaining how things work. And being able to take breaks inbetwen reading. I would recomend this book to anyone who wants to learn PHP, although the book is small, and doesn't have many pages do not be sceptical for it really is great. I also have the Visual Blue Print for mySQL which is what I will be reading next if it is as easy to read and learn as this one, I will be buying alot more "Visual Blue Print" books.

Best PHP book I've seen yet!
In less than 300 pages, this book manages to explain the simpler concepts while not omitting the more advanced topics of PHP programming that aren't covered adequately in other books with over 1000 pages. If a PHP book gets into things like object oriented PHP, using multiple tables in your PHP/database projects, session management and even frequently overlooked things like foreach conditional statements, then it is worth considering. This book covers all that without being annoyingly verbose like so many other books. Topics that take 30 pages of excessive rambling in some books are concisely covered in several pages with diagrams of code to illustrate. I have over a half dozen books on PHP/MySQL and I find that this is the most useful and easy to understand and can be used as a tutorial and quick reference. This book is useful for both beginners and experienced programmers and really does lives up to its motto "Read Less, Learn More".

Great Learning Tool for PHP
I have purchased many books to learn new programming languages in my spare time. Most of them I got boared with that rambled on and on and didn't really help me much. I give this 5 stars because for a person with programming logic and some programming skill you can get a ton out of this book. This is the best programming tutorial I have ever read. I am a software programmer by trade so I have seen a lot of books. This book is right to the point with graphic examples and makes things so easy to understand. If you know a little bit about programming and want to pick up the PHP language this is a must have book. I am about 1/2 way through it right now and can't wait to get the time to finish it. All in all this is a must have book for Newbie PHP programmers to help get your feet wet in the PHP world. Great Job!

Expensive for what you get
I don't understand the good reviews this book got. I was excited about this book and thought I scored a hit when I found it at my library. What a dud! If you are going to start an e-business, you need to find a place to host your site. NOT COVERED! You should expect a book this expensive to point out what to look for in a hosting site, tip you off to bad deals on hosting, expectations on pricing, pricing structures, etc. How on earth can you set up a site without this information? Will you have physical access to your server (should you)? or will you simply upload from a distance? What about hackers? Do you protect the site or do they protect. Is it possible to go it alone (i.e. host the site at your business with a T1 line)? What's involved with going it alone? How do you get a T1 line to your business? None of these things are covered. And the biggie most people want--Credit Card transactions. Not much here either. Cursory information you can glean off the web. There's some information on what happens to the data during a credit card transaction (reads like a TIME-LIFE book), but again, no information on how to choose a Merchant provider, or what to look for in such providers. CyberCash and a few big name players are listed with their web addresses, but you can get this info on the web yourself. Just try, as a startup, to sign on with cybercash. The fees will be outrageous. No ratios as to cost/cc transactions in line with your business is discussed, just dry reporting on how others do it. You come away saying to yourself, ok so that's what's going on (in a very general way), but there's nothing to tell you how to do it yourself. No guides whatsoever. No example business plan, nothing. There are some nice chapters on XML, DynamicHTML, ASP etc., but you can get this in more depth in other books and still pay less than this book. There are some really stupid things in here too. Like a history of computers? What the ... is this doing in here? An introduction to Internet Explorer? If you need an introduction to IE, you shouldn't be thinking about e-commerce yet. Marketing info and business info is provided to the level that you'd understand what people were talking about if you joined a firm that needed to do this. But you would not be in any position to actually do marketing, or e-business. If you read this book cover to cover you will come away with a lot of information, but still be unable to do e-business, e-commerce, or even run a busy website. Boy am I glad I didn't buy this book.

Anyone interested in making a TRADE?
Hi. I currently own the 'e-Business & e-Commerce How-to-Program' book by the authors. If anyone out there currently owns the XML book by Dietel & Associates, and is interested in making a trade, please send me an email. The trade can be either permanent, or just a temporary swap. Which ever you prefer.

Informative, in depth yet simple, a complete resource!
It doesn't come better then this, I purchased this book a week ago and I can not put it down. I am simply amazed at the way this book tackles complex issues in such a simple and straightforward manner. It eases you in so that you fully understand the laws, ethics, asthetics, marketing and solutions to every E-business question ever asked, on top of that it teaches the programming languages of all major languages for the web. Whether you want a profitable business on the web, or just a fantastic site with the most modern abilities, then look no further. This is the ONLY book you'll ever need. The Marketing section alone makes this book worth the money.

It's a good book
but not something that I was looking for. Don't have real life examples in detail.......

With case studies to illustrate real-world examples
Much of Advanced Macromedia ColdFusion 5 Application Development will be a discussion of technologies and ideas with examples to demonstrate specific techniques. Advanced Macromedia ColdFusion 5 Application Development will also contain case studies to illustrate real-world examples of specific topics. ColdFusion 5 is a massive upgrade, and it adds lots of new features, including some designed specifically for advanced and power users. Advanced Macromedia ColdFusion 5 Application Development will address these issues and technologies, including: using clustering and fail-over technologies to ensure server uptime, using the new archive and restore features. server monitor and benchmarking, creating secure applications and integrating with existing security system, extending ColdFusion using COM/DCOM, CORBA, and the ColdFusion C and Delphi API's, using the Java integration options, customizing and modifying the client environment, writing custom tags and functions, ISP ColdFusion hosting issues, and working with XML and XSL. WOW!! Put to use within the first chapter
Within 1 chapter, I was already able to increase performance and get a quality return from this book. A must for every Cold Fusion Developer. It's part 2 of the Cold Fusion Bible!

May Be the Very Best Dreamweaver Tutorial
I'm a technical writer and website builder who asked the webmaster of a national PC manufacturer's site what was the very best book to buy to learn MacroMedia's Dreamweaver -- and he said without missing a beat, "Believe it or not, get DREAMWEAVER FOR DUMMIES! You can go to college with web engineers learning this stuff and you'll see them carrying this book around." Need I say more?

Easy
This book is extremely easy to use, but you should have somewhat of a background on the subject.

Quick read
I like Dummies books because they lack a tutorial - this book gets right to the point. I prefer to dive right into my project and work it out as I go. I am familiar with other web editors, but new to Dreamweaver and this book has given me the overview that I wanted without having to suffer through a tutorial I didn't really want to work on or mounds and mounds of detail that I don't even need (or that I can find on the web somewhere else.) My web site is relatively simple, though large, so the Dummies book fit the bill.

Good book, with good practical excercises but...
This is a good book which is a good reference for me. However, when I got the book and was working through some of the real world exercises. I wanted to download the files that are referenced by the book for the excercises. This is because the book explains more things related to the files than are in the snippets in the book. Anyway, I went to the site referenced and I am continuously getting the page of Death "page can not be displayed". Needless to say I am left wanting.

Clear, Concise and more practical than a nappy pin.
Love this book - as a seasoned web developer with heaps of experience I find this book a great reference tool, fantastic prompter when I'm struggling with XML techonologies, all round very well written and did I mention already PRACTICAL.
If your confused now or then by XML or you know nothing and want to learn from scratch then BUY this book.
Chapters are well defined and organised, it covers everything from css - to XSLT, client side, server side applications and good practices. Well written - without this book my XML nappies would be on the floor.

Very practical oriented
There are dozens of books on XML, the difference is that this is solely focused on the web and very practical oriented; it's not that much about XML theory but it's full of real world examples. The most valuable chapters in my opinion are the ones covering XML support inside the various browsers, the info about client-side XSLT, XML and CSS and DOM manipulation with JavaScript are something that you will not find elsewhere
