Ayurveda? Not!
Cooked Honey! Anyone who has studied Ayurveda in the least knows that cooked honey is one of the most toxic things you can eat. Hardboiled eggs that are then fried! Ayurvedic? Gimme a break. To call this book ayurvedic is misleading. Try "Heaven's Banquet" if you want real ayurveda. If you're just looking for vegetarian recipes and will be satisfied with fifty (count 'em!), stick around.

A great book !
I was excited when I got my book in the mail. I esp. like the desserts and am looking forward to trying the other interest recipies.

Clinical Neurology
This book simplifies clinical neurology. I have read some books that are hard to understand. You will love neurology after reading this book.

good for the entry level clinician
This is a fine book for a clinician who is not at the entry level of competence. I recommend it for neurology interns and advanced medical students, mainly because there is not a better one in print. I think it lacks many therapeutic details, is too long for the student looking for a quick read power review, too limited for the advanced clinician.

An excellent introduction to Neurology
Aminoff et al have produced a very readable introduction to Neurology. Most chapters are exceedingly well written, for the 'introductory' level. The only criticism that I would make is that therapeutic details are slightly thin...if these areas are muscled out it would be nice.

covers lots of practical topics, however rather superficial.
This book is introductory. It deals with many topics such as biological sequence analysis, hidden markov model(HMM), gene prediction using Neural Networks, RNA splicing signal model, evolutionary approach and protein structure modeling. It is helpful to glimpse a broad overview of these topics, however the explanations are rather superficial. Especially the chapters covering sequence analysis are too concise.

In this respect, I recommend the following two books for the readers who want more clear and indepth explanations on the sequence analysis.

by Joao Carlos Setubal (Contributor), Joao Meidanis, Joao C. Setabal

by Richard Durbin (Editor), S. Eddy, A. Krogh, G. Mitchison (Contributor)

Also for the readers who are interested in bioinformatics tools, I would recommend

by Andreas Baxevanis (Editor), B.F.Francis Ouellette (Editor)

Anyway this book covers lots of practical topics and is worth reading.

A terrific overview of the grand challenges
This book offers a wonderful overview of the computational problems in bioinformatics. Readers with an interest in Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning will find this book especially worthwhile. There are chapters on hidden Markov models, case-based reasoning, neural networks, evolutionary approaches (Genetic Algorithms), decision-trees, and probabilistic networks, among others. The book covers sequence analysis, gene prediction and annotation, and includes extensive material on protein structure prediction. A must read for anyone interested in Bioinformatics research.

In the interest of full disclosure, I want to mention that one of the editors of this book, Dr. Steven Salzberg, was my graduate advisor when I was a student at Johns Hopkins from 1992 to 1994.

Where are you?
Great book to teach kids to stay close to parents in grocery store/mall. Adults have a tendency to get lost as Harry discovers when he goes grocery shopping with his grandpa.

Following Harry
My 18-month-old son absolutley loves this book. It is a must read at least once a day. He enjoys Harry's search for the cookies and Grandpa's search for Harry; in the lettuce, the beans, and the banana's. It's also a wonderful book to encourage a child to stay close to their parent (grandparent).

Wisdom of Healing: A Natural Mind Body Program for Optimal Wellness

you like healing?
great philosophy of healing, but Ayurveda. You must be kidding? Can't say as the Hindus are the most healthy and long living

Step by step directions on return to wholness, it works!
Time honored ancient healing practices coincide with the laws of quantum physics, as Simon brings these two seemingly unrelated subjects together in a seamless cosmic dance. From the beginning of creation to the end of our physical lives and return to spirt we are taken on a journey supported by the latest theories on physics. Simon is able to take the Ayurvedic process apart and using conventional medical terms, he shows us how to be aware of the first subtle level of disease.

Following our "instincts" regarding our mind body system, becomes the initial diagnosis tool. He gives us permission to feel rotten, trace it to an emotion, a stress or just a bad day, and then provides tools to deal with each such event before one stage leads to another and an unspeakable illness crops up diagnosed by x-ray or lab results.

Giving credit to the intelligence of our own "machine" Simon leaves the responsibility with the owner. It is the first "owner's manual" I have seen for the human mindbody that makes sense.

Traveling through the suggestions we are acquainted with parts of ourselves we knew existed but have gotten away from due to the flood of medial and sociatal pressures that tell us we have no control over anything in our world any more, not even our own body.

Honoring and respecting ourselves just the way we are, and not buying into any other source of information that proceeds to tell us something we do not, in our hearts, believe, is the first step in the return to wholness.

I found it enlightening, exciting, rejuvenating and honest. A well written manual for the beings we are today.

Like a Christmas stocking full of goodies
What Naxos has done here is put together an anthology of Christmas poetry, musings and other Christmas fair to serve up a delightful listen. Starting with an ancient Christmas carol and even a recipe circa 1300 the listener is treated to poetry, thoughts and reflections from various authors on what Christmas is, and is not about. I have to admit it took me a while to get into this recording but once I did I found myself touched by the Christmas spirit. Indeed I actually bought this last year and saved it for this year's holiday season to listen to. Among the poetry and observations, there are also a few short stories, and evena play. As well interspersed throughout the readings are Christmas carols and classical Christmas music. Its a fine collection although its mostly for adults. In adition one truly must be a lover of English literature to fully appreciate this anthology; the overall theme of this after all has to do with Christmas time in the 19th and early 20th centuries. I would highly recommended if one enjoys works and authors from these time periods. Its great to listen to with a cup of cocoa, or exotic coffee. This book contains 2 CDs and is read by a variety of readers. merry Christmas.

The greatest test for The Great Republic
Writing on the U.S. Civil War must be a daunting task for any author. The vast coliseum of scholarship where so many have been and so many are yet to go leaves little scope for something different or new. Somehow, though, David Eicher's "Mystic Chords of Memory" is a refreshing photographic look at America's supreme hour.

The author has seemingly visited every battlefield, seen every monument, heard every story, read every text, letter and gravestone. From Harper's Ferry to Ford's Theatre, there are "then and now" photographs of many of the key places in that great conflict. The "now" photos from Eicher's own albums are splendid, evocative modern portraits of their black and white kin placed nearby. The photographs are matched by Eicher's simple and plain prose, brisk with quotes from the old generals, their soldiers and their families.

Eicher's book seems to share a similar ancestry to Ken Burns' masterful civil war television series. Both employ simple and elegant approaches to the task of conveying meaning to the conflict. Like Burns, Eicher doesn't waste time with interpretative Rubik's cubes. To Eicher, the Civil War is basic history - bloody, tragic, wasteful - but pure and simple history just the same. Get on with the pictures, stories and bonding with the old heroes; leave quarrel and contention to others.

Some might have feared that the world "will little note, nor long remember", yet David Eicher's study highlights the Civil War's enduring facility for bringing forth new and engaging reflections of that greatest test of The Great Republic. This is a beautiful book and a pleasure to read.

The Question of Equality: Lesbian and Gay Politics in America Since Stonewall
Published in Paperback by Rivers Oram Press (07 August, 1995)
Authors: David Deitcher, Armistead Maupin, and Simon Watney
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

An eclectic, serious coffee-table volume
A mix of politics and history, this volume comprises four essays, along with 15 shorter, first-person pieces by activists who recall key moments of the struggle for gay and lesbian rights and visibility. Published as companion piece to a documentary on the lesbian and gay movement since 1969, the book is more informal, more eclectic, and better illustrated than an academic study, but more serious and substantial than the usual coffee-table volume. The voices it highlights tend to be those associated with "gay liberation" and big-city street activism, but the richness and authenticity of those voices make this book a valuable chronicle.

The Daughters of Simon Lamoreaux : A Novel
Published in Hardcover by (2000)
Author: David Long
Amazon base price: $6.99
List price: $24.00 (that's 71% off!)
Average review score:

Literate and compelling
I found this book to be both beautifully written and a compelling read. I have a tendency to "enjoy the journey" through a well written book (John LeCarre and James Lee Burke come to mind). Should the writing falter, the plot surfaces quickly for me. This plot was worthy, and the writing held my attention. While I found some of the "story" passages rather longish, my attention didn't falter. Long uses some interesting devices in the telling of his tale, and Julia Lemoreauex is a very intriguing character -- as are her father, Simon, and the narrator himself, Miles Fanning. I found the religious elements particularly interesting. David Long's other works are also highly recommended, especially his short fiction in Blue Spruce: Stories.

Another Amazing Effort by Long
I've long been a fan of David Long's short fiction, and I was pleasantly surprised a couple of years ago to find that The Falling Boy was just as compelling and gorgeously written. Now this new novel convinces me that Long is a very underrated writer. This story is suspenseful, intriguing, and, again, masterfully written with phrases that simply stun me. Though I was disappointed that the book wasn't set in Montana like much of Long's work, I continue to be a big fan with The Daughters of Simon Lamoreaux. This was luxurious to read.

masterful and moving
THE DAUGHTERS OF SIMON LAMOREAUX confirms David Long as America's greatest underappreciated fiction writer. The novel is propelled by a mystery - what happened to Carly Lamoreaux? - and is in its way a page-turner, but eschews the cardboard conventions of the mystery genre. Here, it's not the cause but the effects that are riveting; the fact of what happened to Carly is less important than what her disappearance does to those around her. Likewise, Long's writing is as much concerned with the silences around words as the words themselves. His prose is at once pared down and profligate. Read it aloud! Like the best novels, this one makes you want to read it again, and to read others as well; rather than providing any pat answers (to its own plot, or to human psychology), it opens into wider and wider questions. David Long has given us a subtle, haunting, funny, sexy, and utterly unforgettable story.

Might be ok but...
I bought this book because I was trying to teach myself enough to become a Financials Developer. This still MIGHT be the right book for me. However, this is not a step by step guide to the installation. In addition, the book assumes some familiarity with accounting systems.

Excellent Introduction
For those critics of you out there who think that this book was not this or not that, especially the reader from Port Arthur in Tasmania, I suggest you buy an Oracle Reference Manual or Users guide. Get real! This book gives a great introduction to the core Oracle Applications and I believe it was well done. It introduces the business and Functional side to Oracle Financials. For those pretentious readers who can't spell Oracle read the cover "Oracle Financials Handbook" - "Planning and Implementing the Oracle Financial Applications Suite" No where does it say Technical Reference Manual. I'd like to see these half baked consultants write ANYTHING half as good. Well done David and Graham. If anyone cares to discuss this work email me and we'll "CHAT"

Very impressive
Firstly, I have to admit I'm a friend of the primary author David James, but I think they did a great job. Some of the negative reviews have been unfair. A book like this can't possibly be all things to all people. It doesn't cover HR, Payroll, or the core Manufacturing modules - that's why it's the "Oracle Financials Handbook", not the "Oracle Applications Handbook". It's definitely not a reference book or technical manual - you get those from Oracle Corporation anyway. What this book does do, is give an excellent background to real-world implementation of the Financials modules at a functional level. It's great for beginners and the more advanced, but I would defy even the gurus to read it and say they haven't learned from it.

I actually tried to talk David out of the whole endeavour almost three years ago, not because I didn't think he was qualified, but because I didn't think it was possible to write such a book covering all the Financials modules. I think he'd admit he underestimated just how much work it would be. That's one reason why a book like this hasn't been written before - there is just so much information to cover, unless you resort to wholesale cutting and pasting from the manuals and other people's papers.

I think the book is very impressive. I know David's skills, and I know how hard he worked to put everything together, and update it as the product evolved. I would recommend it to anyone working on a Financials implementation.
