Why do the innocent suffer?
Good question. What I really want to know is, when are more people going to wake up and start reading John Scott? This man is a master. With a small collection of novels, and some equally fine poetry, Scott has stunned me and every other reader to whom I've recommended him. His "What I Have Written" (1994) is my all-time-favourite Australian novel. "The Architect" is ostensibly a tale about two architects: an ageing German with drawers full of unrealized masterpieces; and a young, highly successful Australian devotee. When the master meets the student and proposes a collaboration, things very quickly get very dark. Scott takes us into some terrifying but fascinating moral territory here and, like the novel's German protagonist, the author is utterly relentless. For me, this novel is essentially an interpretation of, and a reply to, The Book of Job which famously explores the issue of undeserved suffering. You should probably be familiar with Job before reading this novel. I'd recommend David Wolfers' translation and insightful commentary on it in "Deep Things Out of Darkness", which Scott acknowledges as a source for this work. Wolfers reads Job as an allegory for the destruction of Judah by the Assyrians, and Scott applies this to a twentieth-century German context with fascinating results. If this novel really interests you, you might also enjoy Jung's dense but interesting "Answer to Job" (another of Scott's acknowledged sources). Reading them in this order - Wolfers, Scott, Jung - would probably be a rewarding experience. For all its intellectual complexity, this is a very visual novel. There are some stunning images in it, and a general absence of interiority (which probably accounts for the powerful sense of inexplicable evil it generates). Scott is also a screenwriter, and as this book is dedicated to his filmic collaborator John Hughes, I'm sure there must be a movie in the works. I can't wait to see it. I wish I could make it myself.

A Guide to Playing the Mythos Card Game
This book contains miscellaneous information about the Mythos collectible card game. It contains: the rules of the game, a FAQ, a short play and deck construction guide, a sort of designer's notes on the game, background information on selected cards, rules for solitaire play and creating your own adventures, a complete spoiler list for the limited edition of the game and lists of card attributes and requirements for completing adventures.
As a collector and player of the game, I found the designer's notes on the history of the game and the design philosophy to be especially interesting. Also useful to me are the short notes on the background of selected cards and the rules for creating and scoring your own adventures. The pictures of the selected cards are black & white with a paragraph of background info. Buyers should also note that there is an updated version of the rules of the game at the Chaosium website.

Excellent manual for Camaro owners/restorers
This is all a Camaro owner will ever need for simple to even somewhat advanced maintenance and repair instructions for their car. From engine overhaul to routine maintenance schedules and procedures to removal and installation of the engine and transmission, with many pictures and illustrations including several exploded views and complete wiring diagrams, this is an invaluable guide. This is best for someone who is handy with and has ready access to standard shop tools, and enjoys "do-it-yourself" work, although instructions are clear enough to accomodate almost anyone with the recommended equipment (a full list of which is included).

Look Ma ! No Limp!
Whoda thunkit. After living with Gout for ten years, Cyril Scott cures me in 93 pages. Although Scott touts cider vinegar as a pancea for the ages, resolving everything from Vertigo to thin toe nails, he does admit that it cannot counteract evil vices. This small book has proven itself in my single ailment alone and there are no side affects as there are with conventional chemical therapy. If I hadn't suffered for so long I never would have believed that a little fermented apple juice could be so amazing. This book can cure what ails you.
A course in the theory of groups

The only group theory book for the advanced reader.
This book is, I suppose, the most authoritative and comprehensive text on group theory. Text is quite succinct and self-contained, proofs are elegant and rigorous. Only few sections of the first chapter cover undergraduate group theory. Therefore I do not recommend it for the one that would prefer an introductory text rather than a serious reference text. It is also a strong self study text, the example questions are well-chosen and generally demanding. Though its name begins with `A Course...', I think it contains enough material for more than 3 courses, a semester each. It is definitely worth its value, a must for a mathematician's library.

This is the bible for Dead Heads
This review will be brief as the title speaks for itself. This book has every set list for ALL shows performed by the Grateful Dead. That is three decades of jamming and year-round performing. It is nicely indexed so that you can identify those unknown sets that you have on tape or MP3. The only faults I find (and slight ones) are inaccuracies during the 1960's, and not having the lists for The Jerry Garcia Band shows (Jerry was a trooper-- doing shows when the Dead was not on tour). A nice supplement to this would be a list of Jerry Garcia Band, Rat Dog, and The Other Ones, shows, as well as Further Festival shows. However, do not get me wrong, if you are a Dead Head, you need this book. Excellent, buy it and keep GDTRFB.
