A Fun Read for Kids and Parents
Dinosaur James is the story of the boy who plays nothing but dinosaur games, and knows all of the dinosaur names. If that wasn't you growing up maybe it was your brother or the kid down the block. Anyway, you will like James.

An easy reader with just a sentence on each page and big colorful pictures, your kids will soon read it or recite it by heart, which isn't a bad way to learn to read. I have given a bunch of these as gifts, every kid loved it.

Sadly, not every parent loved it, and childrens librarians and teachers really, really, do not love it. I hate to give away the surprise ending, but let me just say it is what every kid would wish for, just ask them.

Faith Works : A Bible Study on the Letter of James
Published in Audio Cassette by Saint Joseph Communications (03 March, 1997)
Author: Scott Hahn

Average review score:

Scott Hahn masterful in analyzing Letter of James
Scott Hahn does it again in this six tape series on the Letter of James.

This is the third Scott Hahn tape series I have purchased. Clearly the strength in his teaching and analysis lays in his ability to clarify the New Testament by using the Old. In this series - as well as the others I have purchased - Professor Hahn lays out Old Testament passages that support his conclusions.

This is so vitally important in studying Scripture because it draws the line between reading truth out of the text (exegesis) and reading prejudices into the text (isogesis).

As for Professor Hahn's conclusions, they disspel the long-standing myth that James' version of justification opposes Paul's. Using references from the Old and New Testaments, he shows that James and Paul are actually in total agreement.

Professor Hahn divides the bulk of James' letter into three areas based on the "summary" provided in James 1:19; 1) Quick to Hear (1:20 - 2:26); 2) Slow to speak (3:1 - 3:18); and 3) Slow to anger (4:1 - 5:18).

An easy five stars. Well worth your time and money!

From a Three-Cornered World: New and Selected Poems (The Scott and Laurie Oki Series in Asian American Studies)
Published in Paperback by University of Washington Press (1997)
Author: James Masao Mitsui
Amazon base price: $12.95
Used price: $5.95
Average review score:

Truly a Wonderful Collection of Poems
From a Three Cornered World takes poems from Jim Mitsui's three previous books and adds them to three sections of new poems. Jim Mitsui, is of course of Japanese descent, but the poet is also a Washington state poet, and an American poet. From the beginning, Mitsui shows careful attention to the things which influence his life. Jim Mitsui takes the reader on a guided tour of his family and his wonderfully rich view of the world. The reader sees the author's world from a multitude of perspectives ranging from childhood to career to friendships to love. Add to this that the poet has a magnificent sense of personal history, that is a personal perspective of history, and you cannot go wrong. Being fortunate enough to listen to Mitsui both read and talk about his poetry, I have come away with a sense that he wants me to discover rather than be told what to expect from these poems. Often influenced by paintings and the wonderful minutia of everyday life, I find myself reading his poem, "Rationale," again and again. The two line ars poetica is as powerful as that of Neruda. Quite simply, this is a fascinating collection of poetry of which I shall never tire.

A great character continues!
I'm SOOOO glad this character, Kit Shannon, is back for more books. My only complaint is these books don't come out fast enough!

In this one, Kit is faced with another murder trial, and this time gets help from none other than the young magician, Harry Houdini.

It is another wonderful story about the friskiest woman lawyer in the country, Kit Shannon.

A tour de force literary analysis
James Baldwin's Later Fiction: Witness To The Journey by Lynn Orilla Scott (Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of American Thought and Language, Michigan State University) is a tour de force literary analysis of one of the great African American authors of the twentieth century. Close readings and a thoughtful study of Baldwin's "Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone," "If Beale Street Could Talk," and "Just Above My Head" compose this literary analysis and commentary that examines how African-American artists and writers have fought to change how race, sex, and gender are represented (and sometimes stereotyped) in American popular culture. James Baldwin's Later Fiction is highly recommended for its solid focus on James Baldwin, who as an African-American writer, reflected and incorporated the upheavals in society as reflected in the civil rights and black power movements of the 1950s and 1960s.

James I: The Fool as King
Published in Hardcover by Ross House Books ()
Author: Otto J. Scott
Amazon base price: $20.00
Used price: $13.00
Average review score:

The View from a Reformed Christian Perspective
Otto Scott pulls no punches in his evaluation of James I of England (James VI of Scotland). Scott's writing is easy to read and fast paced, yet of a high scholarly quality. His solidly Christian perspective is unusual today. Look for other books by Scott. I recommend his book on Robespierre and _The Great Christian Revolution_. Highly recommended -- you will not be disappointed.
