Make the rest the best!
One word describes this book: OUTSTANDING! Given these two statistics: (1) Every seven seconds, a baby boomer turns age 50, and (2) the divorce rate is up 16 percent for marriages of 30-plus years, this book is a MUST READ for all couples who fall into the empty nest/second half marriage category. Don't let the word "fighting" in the title make you think for a minute that this book is only for couples whose marriages are on shaky ground. It is for ALL couples wanting to build, keep, or return to a great relationship.

This book is the best of the best. It is the best of the book The Second Half of Marriage by David and Claudia Arp in which they identify eight challenges every marriage in the second half faces. And, it is the best of the strategies and techniques of the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP) developed by Stanley, Markman, and Blumberg. Not only do the authors suggest powerful, yet simple, ways couples can upgrade their communication and conflict resolution skills, they also stress the importance of building couple friendship, having fun, becoming empty nest lovers, and keeping the relationship strong.

Do you want the rest to be the best? READ this book!

Just the two of us again
Although we are an empty nest couple, it doesn't seem that way with the pets we inherited from the kids when they moved out. We have 3 cats, 1 dog and an iguana to keep us busy now. I think the kids were easier to raise!

This great book isn't just for couples who have a truly empty nest. Many midlife couples today find that their nests get refilled with boomerang adult kids, aging parents, visits from kids and grandkids, or grandkids on a full time basis.

I liked the section on how to learn about the danger signs of behaviors that can lead couples who have been married for decades to the divorce court. There is also good information on the major issues that midlife couples need to deal with in order to have a strong marriage.

I cannot stress enough how excellent this book is!
I am a 3rd year medical student and this book has been a lifesaver more times than I can count. Like most books of its kind, each chapter is based on a single symptom followed by a list of the most common diseases or processes that cause the symptom. However, the difference is that for each of the items in the differential the author gives a VERY BRIEF description of THE MOST pertinent positives and negatives, and these help you, the medical student (read "novice"), differentiate between them quickly. This book is so well organized and so easily and quickly read it will amaze you. Keep in mind, however, that this book doesn't give you all of the symptoms for each item in the differential, nor does it give an absolutely complete or exhaustive differential for each symptom, so if that is what you are looking for this book isn't for you. One other bonus though, this book fits very easily into a coat pocket.

great for med students; fits in your pocket!
I am a third year med student and this book is great! It takes a single finding from your history and physical exam and gives a differential to boot. There is even a brief description of all the things listed in the differential. It even has color plates in the back of common findings. Definitely a book to look into for all of you starting out like I am.

Hidden treasure
I was given the opportunity to catalog Dr. Gentry's herbarium collection at the Desert Botanical Garden in 1987-88. I haven't seen the new edition mentioned here, but read the original work at the time I was cataloging his herbarium specimens. Through it, I was able to share his experience as an explorer in the spirit of John Wesley Powell, someone who knew that the American southwest is best delineated by watersheds, not along false lat/long lines. I met Dr. Gentry a couple of times, and remember the occasions well. Last time I saw him, when I was cataloging his collection, I overheard a conversation between him and a consultant for the Fort McDowell Indian Community. The consultant was asking about desert-adapted crop plants. Dr. Gentry went into great detail describing many desert plants suited to agriculture - tepary beans, jojoba, Lippia (Mexican oregano), agave, chiltepines, gum arabic, etc. I learned a lot just by eavesdropping. The consultant listened, but did not hear the words. He recommended that the Fort McDowell people plant cotton. Not because it was best suited to desert agriculture - far from that. They planted cotton because it needs vast quantities of water. They did not want the best desert-adapted crops. What they wanted, instead, was the best crop for wasting water, so that they could establish valid rights to the water. Worse, I watched them clear off vast acreages of mesquite forests to make room for the water-wasting cotton crop. The Hopi call this koyaanisqatsi. This book should help folks in southwestern north America realize that we have a bounteous resource, if we can only learn to use it.

Excellent reference book
Located in a transition zone between the Sonoran Desert and the tropics, this region is well known for its biodiversity, thanks to a 1942 study by botanist Howard Scott Gentry. Revision of his classic work began before his death in 1993. For researchers, this is a must-read book. It provides a clear overview of botanical studies of the Rio Mayo, a contemporary view of the vegatation, excerpts from the original text and an annotated list of plants.

How to save on the cost of credit.
Everyone will use credit in their lifetime. Maybe to buy a house, car or paying for an education. This book outlines the procedures you should follow to ensure you get the cheapest credit avilable and not to overpay on money borrowed. And what to watch for so you don't obtain more credit than you can manage. There are many lending organizations that will encourage you to borrow more than you can pay back. These organizations want you to borrow so much that you will only be able to pay their high interest rates, but not be able to pay down on the amount borrowed. Consequently you are hooked.
