Riddle of the Wren
I really liked this book. The heroine was a more down to earth type, making the story easier to relate to. The characters were imaginative and completely believable. Each had normal qualities that brings the story to the reader. Plus, the bad guys were REALLY bad, and made you hate them and sympathize with the good guys even more. Some parts of the book were a little slow reading, but it all turned out excellent! I wish I could write like that! Overall, I definitely would recommend this book for anyone that would like a good read or likes tales of magic and far places.

My first de Lint.
I was not amazingly eager to begin this book.I had been reading other books that I wanted the sequels of .But boy was I in for a treat !I found that de Lint has much magical creativity ,and wonderful creative magical creatures.Anyone who appreciates things like Shannara is sure to like this.
I would have rated this four and one half if there was a rating for one reason:There was a bit too much action. But otherwise, this is a fine book, and any fantasy-lover should read it.

What if Dreams Came True?
Minda Sealy's life is not the best, but it's normal enough and all she's ever known besides. Working at her father's inn keeps her fed and ensures a place to sleep...and if her father's a little short-tempered...well, she can deal with that.

But lately Minda has been plagued by a recurring nightmare that seems frighteningly real. Of course that's nonsense...right?
Soon, the nightmare has worsened, and Minda's quest to rid her sleep of tortured dreams soon becomes a quest in truth that will take her far from home and closer to discovering the reality of dreams...

This is good fantasy! The characters are unique, funny, and lovable. The different places Minda encounters are startling, beautiful, and often dangerous. People who love a good fantasy quest should check this out.

The Source of My Strength
In tragedy we need to know what the source of our strength is.
When I lost someone I loved I needed to remember that Christ is the Source of my strength. Thank you Charles Stanley for your guidance and for sharing your knowledge of the word.
I have also found it helpful to use another Christian book to help me continue to heal. It is Write From Your Heart, A Healing Grief Journal.
The answers and the comfort are in the word and in Him.

ENJOYABLE AND EASY TO FOLLOW
Charles Stanley's "The Source of My Strength" is simply wonderful. It was easy to follow and understand, and his examples were great. I especially liked the way he conveyed his feelings for Christ by creating imagery in the minds of the readers/listeners (I got the audio book, unabridged).

Mr. Stanley offers biblical principles that will help you discover your liberty in Christ so you can live fully and freely every day.

Get this! You won't be sorry!

Dr. Stanley Is Truly In Touch With God's Grace...
I bought this book because it was on sale at a local book store. I had seen Stanley speak before and figured it would be good reading. Little did I know this little book could steer my entire life in the right direction! Dr. Stanley just seems to have a gift of easing the truth through thick sculls like mine. Allowing the light in where it was completely dark. I recommend this book to anyone who has had anything go wrong in their life. My Charles Stanley collection continues to grow. God bless him!

Needless to say
This commentary on The Psalms is a treasury of Puritan thoughts. I Praise the Lord that He led a man of such caliber like Spurgeon to collaborate articles on such a blessed book.

The Best of the Best in the Best
Along with Spurgeon's beautiful facility with language, this also has a surprisingly easy format to follow. One need not search in vain for the verse that he is looking for. Nor will one run out of meat if preparing for the sermon or Bible study. Spurgeon has provided the best advice from the best teachers in the best volume on the Psalms. If you are not a pastor or teacher and you are looking for devotional material, this is the cream of the crop. Because the Psalms are prayers, and Spurgeon is the master of prayer, then your soul will be stirred as he speaks of prayer. Reader be blessed.

Listen To The Man Who Listens To God
Charles Haddon Spurgeon was England's Prince of Preachers in the nineteenth century. Today he is still one of the most well-known and loved authors in the English language - with more of his books and sermons in print (over 100 years) than any other English writer. However, I am not endorsing his works simply because of his popularity or any man's for that matter. I am recommending the works of this man because he is one who listens to God.

The Treasury of David is Spurgeon's Magnum Opus. If he had not written anything else apart from this masterful commentary on the Psalms, he would still be considered among the greatest Christian writers of all history. Students of the life of Spurgeon would know that he was not a strict academician. However, in all sense of the word, he was a man of learning who was acquainted with much of the scholarly issues of his times. Ultimately, he was a man who listen to God and labored for God's honor among men. This Treasury is the supreme monument to his 21 year labor.

In the compiling of this Treasury, Spurgeon read up hundreds of theological texts and commentaries (much of which was quoted among his own notes and comments). In the original edition, Spurgeon also included his "Notes to the Village Preacher" on every Psalm - showing that Spurgeon will always be very important to anyone who wishes to speak from the Pulpit. I believe, however, that the worth of this book is even more for the lay student (Spurgeon's heart beats for them the most throughout his life). He attempted to share with them the best scholarship of his time and to lead them beyond scholarship to the worship of David's God. Reading this volume led me into worship of the same God - and I will never recover from Him! I exult in Him!

We will see, as many other readers have seen that the greatest treasures of the ancient Israelite Kingdom was not the Temple that Solomon built, the gold and harem that the kings acquired nor even the Ark of the Covenant (that so many modern authors are speculating about) but these simple, unassuming songs that came from the worshipping heart of Israel's King David and his fellow worshippers. In this Treasury, we see a prayer for every occasion. We see the entire spectrum of the spiritual man's experience - penitence, courage, humiliation, power, confidence, exultation, doubt, weeping, laughter, awe, dread, fear and ultimately worship. Rightly did Faber exclaimed, "The Thought of Thee is almost prayer". This volume brings together the worship of David to Jehovah and Spurgeon to Jesus showing that they were both ultimately worshipping One same God. "Hear O Israel, the Lord thy God is One Lord".

The volume I'm reviewing here is an update of the original 7 volume set written in Victorian English. What we have here is the result of Roy H. Clarke's 10 year research into the life and writtings of Spurgeon. For those of you who distrust any update of a classic, rest assured that the work done here is exemplary work. Clarke has too much respect for Spurgeon to ever water down his words - every word by Spurgeon is here (only archaic words are replaced with modern English usage of the same). Clarke did not water down Spurgeon's words with the language of commerce but allowed the spaciousness, reverence and expansiveness of Spurgeon's English to be retained - and to speak afresh to us today in language that we can understand. Clarke removed most of the quotations from the other commentators in Spurgeon's original volumes and included only the most significant in this volume side-by-side with Spurgeon's own notes (something only done in this volume for the first time). Finally, the original notes of preachers are now presented in outline form according to the outlines for Spurgeon's own sermons (something that Roy Clarke himself spent his 10 years studying). Reading this volume makes me want to seek out the original 7 volume set (still in print) but I would say that even for those who have already read the original, this volume is still very valuable - for its dynamism, its freshness and as an aid by which we can listen to a man who listens to God.

I just loved this book!
I loved the glitz and glamour and inner workings of Hollywood and with the overlay of WWII, Charles Rubin has exquisitely woven a wonderful story in a wonderful time. I loved being there. The characters are a diverse group, glamorous, tough, compassionate, calculating and more, each adding a new dimension to a book to become absolutely engrossed in. Oh, and I found myself smiling a lot.

Fantastic book!
You will just love this book! It is just like one of the great movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Just like wanting to watch your favorite movie over and over again, you will want to read this book again and again. I would love to see a movie made from it!

why do flys eat doggy poop?
I recently recieved this charming book as a gift from a special friend for my children. Our usual evening ritual is for my husband to (very begrudgingly) read to our children before bed. My son wanted to here some of the poems in this book. After the first one, through snickers and belly laughs, they read together for almost an entire hour. At my promting is was time for bed with the promise to read the rest tomorrow. I whole- heartedly enjoyed watching and listening to a very well put together assortment of childrens poems. My son (almost 6)thought they were hilarious. My husband thought they were hysterical and my two year old just laughed because everyone else was. Overall I really enjoyed that first night with our new favorite book and have since recommended it to all of my friends with chidren. THANK YOU- AGAIN!!! Mr. Lewis @214

The Best Yet for Children
I teach 4th grade. This is the best book I have ever used in my classroom. Both boys and girls love the poems. I read from it almost every day. Both the children and I enjoy the book. What I find especially unique is the number of poems which my class enjoys. Of 31 children there are 17 different favorite poems. I have read many of the poems several times and the response is still laughter. L. W. Lewis has done an amazing job. I have recommended the book to other teachers and purchased copies for my children and my sister's children. It is a great book and I strongly recommend it to anyone who has children (or grandchildren) in grades K-6.

The Scoop on Poop
I was initially drawn to this book (like flies to you know what) by the edgy title and the whimsically compelling black and white illustration on the cover. Once opened, the book doesn't disappoint, it delights. L.W. Lewis does not condescend to children in his writing, he winks at them and gives them credit for having well developed, if slightly askew, senses of humor. I gave my copy as a gift to a child who carries it with her and reads it to her mother in the car -- and they both laugh out loud at poems about agitated kitties, noodles-up-your-nose etiquette, and many other little childhood dramas involving guppies, boogers and puppy dog tails. I'm getting another copy for myself and looking forward to more good work from L.W. Lewis.

Even if you don't hunt, this book is for dog people.
This memoir by columnist Gusewelle of the life of his dog Rufus is rich, funny and gives a thorough explication of what it meant to live with the Brittany Rufus. I was not partial to the passages on hunting, as I am not a hunter, but I was still engrossed in the book, because these incidents told a lot about Rufus, and after all, HE loved the hunt. It's a pleasant read, with a not unexpected end that while sad completes the story satisfactorily. If you know someone who loves to read, hunt and loves his dogs, this book is definitely the perfect gift.

Experience A Full Range of Emotions
This book catches your attention immediately. The author's style makes you want to curl up and read without putting this book down for even a second! I am a Brittany owner but dog owners of all breeds, especially gun dogs, will find themselves smiling, crying, laughing and more as they take an emotional journey with the author and his dog through the seasons of their collective lives! ....a wonderful, heartwarming experience, don't miss it!

Great Read for Dog Lovers
This will warm the hearts of all dog lovers. Dog owners will reflect on their own experiences with dogs as they read about Rufus, his yard mate and his Master, Charles. Do not be surprised if you find yourself smiling, crying and even laughing out loud.

Unexpected
I saw this book at a thrift store and passed it by. The next time I came to the store the book was still there. I picked it up and was hooked by the 3rd page. Being very close to my own sister I was given a glimpse of what our future would be like if we were in the same situation. The sister's journey is a wonderful one. I enjoyed every page and was sorry to get to the last one. I highly recommend this book.

Premise sounds unbelievable but believe it!
The premise of two widowed sisters, one blind, one alcoholic making a cross country car trip to confront the son of the blind sister on his lack of contact with her sounds unbelievable at first, but the way Dickinson handles it, it all makes sense in the end. The movie, the Straight Story, which was a true story and came out after this book, also dealt with this drastic last ditch attempt by seniors to mend fences with relatives whom they had lost closeness with. In the Straight Story a farmer crosses the country on a tractor/lawn mower because he is visually unable to drive a car to see a long estranged brother. In Widows' Adventures the blind driving sister takes directions from her sighted sister from Chicago to California by taking back roads and driving no more than 20-30 miles an hour! Ultimately, it is not the driving itself that provides the treat of reading the book, although the sequence in which the ladies almost get caught by a police officer is hilarious, but the self discovery that occurs when they decide to go on the physical and emotional journey.

A Sweet, Tender, and Funny Tale
I absolutely loved this beautiful, touching, and very funny book about two sisters on the road trip of their lives. Two widowed sisters, one blind, the other a bit of an alcoholic, they are on a cross-country automobile ride. It sounds simple and trite, I know. There are mishaps along the way, many of which you might be able to guess at, yet this sweet pair of women is truly engaging and Charles Dickinson deserves more attention for the work he's done.

Saga of Vietnam War and its Aftermath
This book is for anyone interested in the Vietnam War and particularly the US Army Rangers. The story concerns two New Englanders who wind up in the same company but become involved in their own private feud while battling the NVA enemy. The battle scenes are realistic and very graphic and it gives the reader an insight into how this brutal war was fought from the perspective of the average infantryman. The second part of the book is about what happened to the two main characters as they live and relive these experiences many years later. I recommend this book for anyone who seeks to find out the motivation of our soldiers when in battle and how they are able to cope with all of it in later life. This book was certainly an eye-opener for me and I'm sure for others who have read it.

Moving and Compelling
I've just reread this book for the second time. It's a favorite on my shelf. Each time I have found in it a new insight on the humanity that struggles within all of us, buried under our hopes, insecurities and fears. Reilly has truly written of the incredible experiences of two men intertwined by one of the greatest tragedies of human life of our times -- a cathartic literary experience one hopes for him and a delightful, riveting read for us. There were times when I laughed out loud and others when I felt moved with a great compassion. I can't wait to see what he has in store for us next. Bring it on Reilly!

Realistic, characters and storyline. Very sad too.
Charles Reilly's characters,Gavinand O'Connor, are so real it seems like someone you grew up with.
