a very comprehensive timeline
A 600+ page chronology, year by year, of the black experience in America - from the first records of Africans on the continent onwards. If you have more than a passing interest in Black Studies, then this is an enriching resource. The entries are dense with information and well-written enough to be compelling to the casual peruser.

Black Saga is a treasure.
Black Saga is a book I turn to constantly when doing research for my books. I imagine I would cherish this book even if I weren't a writer. It is intelligent, compelling, and so comprehensive. It should be in every home and in every school--wherever there are learners and lovers of history.

Black Saga is Excellent !
Black Saga is an excellent book to assist young people to become more productive, contributing adults. It is important for young people to learn and understand their complete history. As a teacher, I found this book to be an excellent reference source, and an important part of any history class.

A Brilliant "Must Read" Synthesis of Air Power Thinking
Colonel John A. Warden III was one of the most distinguished officers of his generation. A veteran fighter pilot, he was--is--as well a true defense intellectual--not the sort of individual often touted by the so-called "defense reform movement," but a true warrior-scholar in the classic image of, say, a J. F. C. Fuller--or a George Patton. Not one to shy away from controversy, Warden was convinced in the 1980's that the United States Air Force--had strayed away from its first principles. It had become a stove-piped, tribal organization, riven by discord and confusion between its "strategic" and "tactical" communities. Warden, in this brilliant work (written as a thesis at the National Defense University), posited an exciting new vision of the centrality of air power in national defense. This book served as an important departure point for the service's subsequent "Global Reach--Global Power" strategic planning framework issued in 1990. By that time, Warden was running Checkmate, a key office in Air Force planning. Through his own initiative and vision, he and a small team of "weapons officers" planned Instant Thunder, the first major response to Saddam Hussein's aggression in the Gulf. Warden briefed Instant Thunder to the Air Force Vice Chief of Staff (the Chief was away), and then on his suggestion to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen. Colin Powell. Powell sent him to CENTCOM to brief Norman Schwarzkopf. His reaction was enthusiastic, and Warden was directed to brief Instant Thunder in the Gulf, to the CENTAF air component commander, General Charles Horner. Horner, brilliant in his own right, accepted much of what Warden said. But the personal chemistry between the two men was bad, and Warden returned to the States, leaving behind a small staff of acolytes and experts, most notably Lt. Col. David A. Deptula. It was the partnership of Deptula, Gen. Buster Glosson, Gen. Horner, and (back in Checkmate) John Warden that made the Desert Storm air campaign a success. After the war, Warden became commander of the Air Command and Staff College, making notable (and badly needed) changes to its curriculum. This book is a "must read" by anyone who would consider themselves a military and/or air power professional. There are Americans alive today because of John Warden's work. Warden never made general, largely because of petty jealousies by senior people above him. He was--is--a consumate professional and true patriot: never complaining, never self-advocating, always keeping true to his core beliefs. But his truest legacy is this book and the thinking it has inspired--thinking that has lead to five notable American victories over the last decade. Buy it, read it, keep it, use it!

Update of classic book on warfare
John Warden was the strategist of the air campaign in the 1991 Gulf War. In 1998, he updated his influential book. A must read for anyone interested in the military, its past, present and future.

A must for the business or military strategist!
Col. Warden adds new material to this important work on strategy, especially new material on what happened after the Gulf War. This book is many things. It is a history of airpower. It is a fresh look at the application of airpower. It is a guide for anyone in the military or business world who wants to compete or attack a system. Very readable. With Col Warden's reputation as the architect of the Air Campaign against Iraq, he has demonstrated that he can apply his ideas in real world situations. Outstanding read.

Introduction to the Devout Life

Dated but full of charm and good advice
St. Francis de Sales is one of the greatest of spiritual writers and writers, period. It is easy to be charmed by this guide to the spiritual life. He inspires the reader with a gentle, loving touch which I found delightful. He was also a very learned and experienced adviser when it came to things of the spirit. He seemed to have known about every difficulty that one has in the spiritual life and offers practical and wise solutions that anyone can carry out. If you are interested in reading the great spiritual classics, be certain not to miss this one. It will be well worth your time. I cannot imagine anyone finishing this volume without obtaining some excellent advice from it and also without making progress just from reading it. The only drawback is that it IS several hundreds years old and some of the theology is dated and will seem strange to modern, post Vatican 2 Christians. Do not let that keep you from this book, just keep it in mind when reading it. Highly recommended.

St. Francis de Sales a uniqe individual
This book will help any one get through hard times, good times, loving times, bad relationships, and will basically help you through every day life. It is so deep and so well written by St. Francis de Sales. In the beggining it might be a little hard to read but after going through it, you feel better as a human being. When I first heard about this book I didn't think it would be great, and I thought it would be St. Francis de Sales lecturing me on how I can become more like Jesus Christ. But as I went through the book page by page I started to realize how much I needed this book in my life. The best part about it is that you dont have to read it cover to cover. You just think about some troubles in your life and then you look them up in the table of contents. You only have to read things you would like to read at that particular moment in your life. As I said before, I love the book and anyone who doesn't own it does not know how much closer you become to God after reading it. So next time you have a chance, do yourself a favor, pick up a copy.

I agree!
I can't say it any better than JMark does below, but I feel strongly enough about this book to echo some points.

I knew the book was a few hundred years old and was more or less expecting some datedness in the description of religious practice and in the writing style. What took me completely by surprise was how USEFUL de Sales' advice still remains. He was, as already mentioned, a gentle, wise and thankfully down-to-earth spiritual director. He did not expect over-night transformations and did not advise extreme measures in the spiritual journey. His writing is encouraging and immediately applicable.

When my husband was worried about dryness in prayer, I found the section in this book dealing with spiritual dryness and read it to him. He, although not much of a reader before then, immediately grabbed the book, read the section again himself, and told me that was exactly what he had been experiencing. He has taken permanent possession of the book (to my delight), and has gained a lot of reassurance and practical wisdom from it.

This is an excellent book for persons just embarking on a deeper spiritual life. Once you adjust to the vocabulary he uses, you will understand why Saint Francis de Sales was considered one of the best spiritual directors of his day, and is considered one of the Doctors of the Church. I wouldn't be surprised if, like so many other readers, you find yourself growing downright fond of him.

Proof-positive why Reilly's the one columnist SI ever needed
As a relatively new sports fan, I have only been reading Reilly's work for about two years. This book is an amazing compilation of his best articles, including his earlier work, which I hadn't been exposed to before. A great combination of Reilly's back page Sports Illustrated columns and his longer feature articles, this book had me both laughing and crying. Reilly has covered such a wide variety of sports, this book can be appreciated by fans of every sport.

I Need More Swoosh
Anyone who even read the first few pages of the book would know what I am talking about in my review title. For years, Rick Reilly has been making me laugh on the last page of Sports Illustrated. Now, with this book, I get to relive some of those hilarious moments.

Rick Reilly is one of the best in the business. His writing is funny, off-the-wall, witty, and always informative, even if his subject is not something you really want to be informed about. He has a knack for making light of any subject, and he has written about almost everything imaginable.

This book compiles his absolute best pieces, and they truly are masterful pieces of writing. He uses a very candid language that allows the reader just to take his article in, usually laughing the whole way through.

The Life of Reilly is a perfect book for anyone who is a fan of the columnist, or even for those of you who are sports' fans. This book will make you laugh out loud, as it truly is just pure non-stop enjoyment. This book really is a "can't miss." Besides, anyone chosing Charles Barkley to write the introduction to his book has to be doing something write, er, right!

Reilly is the King
Nobody writes about sport like Reilly. This is a great collection of his Sports Illustrated pieces. If you are a fan of sports journalism, this is a must read for you.

Unearthing Atlantis: An Archaeological Odyssey

A brilliant piece on what is most likely the real Atlantis.

No review can do justice to this fantastic book. Pellegrino not only gives a matter-of-fact explanation of how the Atlantis myth arose, a fascinating jump back in history to the beginning of time, and information on everything from Edith Russell Syndrome to Love Canal, he also shows the real-life workings of archaeology and the fascinating lives of Spyridon Marinatos and Christos Doumas.

I've read a few other books of his, all of them great. I hope to read many more.

Simply the Best
This is simply the best book I have read about archaeology since Gods, Graves, and Scholars. And it is the first book about the scientists who search for the past (actually written by one of them) that teaches us how to actually think in terms of deep time. Read this book and you will emerge from the "Mediterranean Genesis" chapter never viewing your own town, or anyplace on Earth, quite the same, ever again. The story of Atlantis itself, following the Frost/Marinatos hypothesis about the Minoan catastrophe of 1628 B.C. (a date finally fixed in stone by the Pellegrino synthesis), fitering down through history as the "kernel of truth" behind Plato's cautionary tale, is really the first book ever to approach this unsinkable subject from a purely archaeological and geological perspective, with no particular ax to grind. One learns why not even a small island, much less a continent, could have plunged through the ocean floor without leaving a significant and very easily seen geologic trace. Either Plato's Atlantis was based on an (only marginally) embellished and poorly understood account of history's largest known volcanic explosion (Thera/Santorini), or, according to Pellegrino, Atlantis did not exist at all. And to top all: the whole archaeological adventure is wrapped in some of the most elegant prose I have ever read.

A shining example of Minoan Archaeology
After reading Pellegrino's book, I was convinced that the myth of Atlantis truly stemmed from Crete and Thera. As a reader, I was a believer... as an archaeologist, I disagreed with Pellegrino and Marinatos, the head of the Theran excavations, as to the relation of Thera to Atlantis. Nevertheless, Unearthing Atlantis is an entertaining piece of literature with its merits in storytelling and historical perspective. I recommend this book with the advice to read more on the same subject and compare theories..

Great Daily Devotional
This book has helped me to refocus on my relationship with God. I have learned some new ways of looking at things in the Scriptures and some things have been re-iterated for me. I enjoy reading the morning devotional during my morning prayer time and the evening devotional helps me to focus on God before going to bed rather than on the worries of the day. I want to get a copy of it for most of my friends as I think it would be a blessing to them. I am referring to the New International Version of the text.

Morning and Evening by Charles H. Spurgeon
I have a KJV version of this book and it is excellent (I'm sure any version would be excellent). Mr. Spurgeon poetically and passionately describes the attributes of God and His relationship towards us under the pretense of a single verse or phrase in the Bible, and he often quotes scripture in his paragraphs. It is very refreshing and puts my view of the world in a new light of God's sovereignty. I highly recommend it.

Spurgeon Wants You To Know His God
Charles Spurgeon was never too busy to consider the common people of his congregation during his day. In his majisterial "Treasury of David" commentary on Psalms, he included a "Notes for the Village Preacher" at the end of every study. In his "Lectures to my Students", we find him exhorting his students not to "over-preach" lest the widowed mother of seven children in the congregation will miss out the simple, wonderful message of God's lovingkindness. Here, in "Morning & Evening", we find a Spurgeon who speaks directly to the common Christians who long for a closer walk with God.

Spirits of a Feather

Simply amazing
I just spent the past two days reading this book and its sequel, Souls of a Feather. I cannot possibly express how stunned I am by Mr Shirriff's work. The books will leave a lasting impression, and I cannot help but to feel that after reading them that I am somehow a better person.

Spirit of a tender writer
Despite an abrupt ending, I enjoyed this novel and look forward to reading the sequel. Shirriff finds people in the worst situations, or just in situations that would make most readers uncomfortable, then treats them with dignity and tenderness. What would have been a tawdry, bleak, hopeless narrative in other hands becomes a journey of discovery and hope in Shirriff's hands. The character of Jay matures in unexpected but believable ways as he encounters gays, a Shaman, a drug dealer, the rave scene, and many other surprises. Even with Jay's prejudices and sometimes shady dealings, I kept liking him and wanting him to improve his life.

I can't wait to read your next novel!
I am really happy that you wrote this book. People are always "shocked" because they don't want to know the truth. It kinda shows how out of touch they really are and that life is not always a "white picket fence, or 2.5 children!"

Your interpretation of the "gay" scene in Winnipeg and in San Francisco was very amazing.

Success God's Way
Stanley's book is based on important reminders that ultimately our successes should be characterized by goals set with God in mind and that it is too legalistic to apply a cookie cutter mold and say every Christian will become a pauper or must be poor in order to be humble. Clearly being a servant doesn't always mean that we must be struggling financially as well. The important thing to remember is that success in the eyes of the world however is measured differently than in the eyes of God and Stanley does a good job of reminding Christians that if you approach your faith in a way that you are determined to define your successes in a way apart from considering what God wants for you life than we still hold ourselves to be the centre of the universe and not God. I give it four stars only because i try to reserve five starts for my favorite books, but this is definetly a worthwhile read.

Success God's Way.
This book bring the prosperty message into balance. It has made a life changing difference in my life. This is a must reading for all Christians. It makes so-o-o much sense! Dr. Stanley gives the Scriptures to back up what he is saying. Read it without religious traditions and preconcieved ideas.

Reinforces God's Plan for each One of Us
I really enjoyed this book! It was more of a devotional book than anything else, touching on the principles of reaching true happiness, success, and evils such as greed and being negative. Success God's Way reminded me that in order to have true success one has to put God first and everything else will fall into place. I have now adapted one of the techniques that Dr. Stanley stated in the ladder part of his book, which is prioritize the initiatives and goals that you want to accomplish for the next day on a flash card before you go to bed and then put it in your pocket throughout the whole day. It is amazing how much more one can stay on task. The true examination I believe that this book illustrates is are one's goals Godly purposed goals striving to go along with God's plan, or are they individualized goals that do not fit in God's initiative, which makes their purpose lost and unmeaningful? Definately read Success God's Way!!!!!

Fabulous starting point and resource
I am a nurse practitioner and find this book to be very useful as a resource for my patients. When a patient or family member comes down with a new diagnosis, most people want more information to learn more about it. I use this book as a teaching tool so that they can start to learn about their health and personal illnesses. It lays a good foundation for initial health information. I personally like its emphasis on preventive care. It can also help you decide whether an ache or pain you have is serious enough to seek medical attention or not. This book is especially useful to anyone who is not in the medical field and needs immediate information about health or is just interested about health and disease. I highly recommend it.

Everyone should have one in their home. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This is the most clear and informative family medical book I've ever seen! (my parents have a Merck Manual and the Mayo Clinic Fam.and they are absolutely useless in comparison)

The FLOW CHARTS and BETTER information in a logical format are what set this guide apart and make for intelligent deduction/self-diagnosis and possible solutions.

The American Medical Association Family Medical Guide walks you thru your symptoms via these wonderful FLOW CHARTS suggesting possible causes and on what page to find further info.

This book will enable you.

A hypochondriac's dream!
Okay, I'm not a hypochondriac, sorry. My mother purchased an earlier edition of this book, published in 1982. I had that edition until I recently ordered this one to replace it.

I should preface the rest of my review by saying that I have a definite interest in medicine, and planned to become a paramedic. I did take my EMT-B certification (Emergency Medical Techinician-Basic) a few years ago, and this book was one of my resources for studying for tests and answering homework questions. So, I have a clear INTEREST in all things medical, and really enjoy just browsing through this book.

I find that I look things up in this book at least once a week. Sometimes I'll hear the name of a disease or illness on TV and out of curiousity to know more, I'll look it up. If I have a strange symptom, I'll look that up. I am single with no children, but this book would be an invaluable first-aid resource for a family with children or for anyone taking care of a sick or elderly friend or family member.

My favorite aspects of this book are the glossary of medical terms, the very complete and easy-to-use index, and the medication section. Several times I have looked up a medication to determine if it is safe to take with other medications, or to see if side effects are normal.

I think every household should have a copy of this book. Most of the information is timeless and very informative.
