Pulp Art is not perfect but satisfying!
_Pulp Art_ contains a varied collection of wonderful cover art from the pulp fiction of the early 1920's through the 1940's. The paintings are nicely reproduced, crisp and colorful. Intended to encourage the viewer to buy the book, all the cover art is sexually suggestive, menacing, or mysterious. The art also reflect the attitudes and prejudices of their times. The whole spectrum of different genres are represented here, including Science Fiction, Tarzan, Mysteries, Westerns, Heroic, Romance, and War. I found several spelling errors in this book, some of them quite obvious. _Pulp Art_ could have benefited from a decent proof reading, to be sure. Still, the beautiful art is fascinating to view and speaks louder than the printed text inside.

Art that goes pop!
Pulp fiction is an acquired taste these days; although I was born in the sixties, long after the death of these magazines, the paperback boom in science fiction and fantasy following the explosion of popularity due to Tolkien and "Star Wars" put much of the classic pulp series in my hands. I still love the stuff, much in the same way that I enjoy sitting down to a childhood meal of Captain Crunch or a chocolate Sundae. This book provides the graphic counterpart to the words I know so well, in gorgeous reproduced color. The pop culture of the thirties is to this day some of the deepest and most endearing, from Fred and Ginger to the Marx Brothers to the Wizard of Oz movie to hard-boiled detectives to golden age science fiction to the westerns to...well, you probably get the point by now. This is an art that was never intended to do anything more than sell a magazine, but it shows a vitality and craft sadly missing from the same kind of art today. Granted, some of it is misogynistic, sadistic, and racist, but then almost everything in western society is, even to this day. Taken with a little salt, the paintings reach out and bash you between the eyes, daring you not to pick up the magazine they advertise. The book provides an introduction to the topic unmatched elsewhere, and makes suggestions for follow-ups to the fan. The pictures alone are worth the price: they range from N.C. Wyeth to J. Allen St. John to Margaret Brundage to Rafael de Soto (whose use of light, darkness, and bright colors is perhaps the most striking in the whole book, at least to my uneducated eye -- regardless, his paintings in particular leap off the page). All in all, a most enjoyable volume.

"Good Typography Sells!"
However, with all due respect, a book about the pulps without at least one typo would not be true to its subject. That is to say, a hallmark of the pulps is the speed and verve with which the books were produced -- mispellings, tygos, broken fonts and printing blemishes included.

A good book...
I'm a MBA student in marketing. This book is good, but just that... good. I'm absolutely certain that somewhere has to be a book about strategic marketing that has a little more information (that's the problem, little theory and plenty of numbers) and not so expensive. Teresa M. Rodríguez

Great and comprehensive
I am a MBA Candidate with a finance focus who had the pleasure to use this book. Never before had I imagined that marketing could have the amount of numerical focus that this book shows. There's a case for every type of industry and many world-famous companies in this book. What else is missing from an introduction to marketing text?!

When Anger Hurts

Best practical guide in print
I consider this the best book in print for self-help for anger. Many of us get angry and then feel guilty for our anger. This helps explore what is behind one's anger. What is healthy and what is not. And when it is not healthy, how to deal with it. Best how to I have seen.

Terrific Book
As a therapist, I recommend this book for people dealing with anger in my daily practice. It is easy to read, and people can really open the book anywhere and get useful information. I find anyone can benefit from this book, not just for anger issues, but is helpful for anyone wanting to improve their communication.

My clients gain a lot from reading it.
I am a therapist, and I do lots of one-on-one counseling with clients who have anger issues. I always recommend this book for "homework" in the first session. McKay presents the most important issues with clear instructions of what to do.

Selling common sense as secrets?
Was this an autobiography? It sure read that way, considering the author referenced his personal wealth and possessions more than he referenced persuasion. A very vain man, it seems. Mr. Dawson's 'secrets' are little more than packaged common sense. I give this book two 'mercy' stars because there were one or two ideas that I found helpful. One or two, not three. In short, this book revealed very little about persuasion, let alone persuade me to pick up any of the author's other books.

Best business book I've ever read
As a school teacher, I don't read many business books but this one was so helpful to me. There was so much about persuasion that I didn't understand until I read this book. Now it's helping me in every area of my life. Perhaps this sounds trite, but I feel so much more powerful now that I understand the secrets in this book.

One of the best business books I've read
Wow! I'm impressed! This is one of the best-researched, most thorough books on persuasion that I've had the pleasure of reading. Best of all - it's not just theory. The author, Roger Dawson adds tons of practical examples and applications for each technique. That means you can use this stuff immediately. By far one the best business books I've read in some time.

Raining Cats and Dogs
The Dictionary of Cliches is a great book! It's one of the best cliche books I have ever read! Rags and Riches, where does this come from? You'll find the answer to this question and many more answers! Face the facts, this is a great book to read when it's raining cats and dogs!

Interesting Facts
If you ever wondered where cliches like naked as a jaybird or killing two birds with one stone came from, then you need to check out this book. James Rogers has compiled thousands of cliches and the easy to read and use dictionary is great. Anyone who does alot of writing or research, then this book should be on your shelf. Even if you don't, it is still an interesting and many times humorous read.

The Dictionary of Clichés
I got this book years ago as a joke. My mother uses clichés all the time and I thought it would be funny to give her the book. However, I kept it because I found it so interesting. Now it is integral to the research I do for my website. This book is informative, and well put together. I say BUY THIS BOOK!

Brilliant concepts; desperately needs an editor.
Peppers and Rogers may be the pioneers of one-to-one marketing techniques (or maybe even not), but they're terrible book writers. I've read their articles on the same topics, and they're much more concise. In the book, you learn all you really need to know in the first few paragraphs of each chapter; the rest is just regurgitation. I eventually gave up; I just couldn't read it anymore. You'd be better off reading a few articles, or someone else's books, unless you have an extremely high attention span or no background whatsoever in the concepts they discuss. They're very smart people, but if you've already learned the basics, this book will waste your time.

Marketing Strategies for the Future
Clear and well-written exploration of market share approach to marketing versus the one-to-one approach to marketing. Explained well, and backed up with solid and very applicable examples.

It's important to remember that this book prepared the way for current Internet-based/personalized approaches to marketing. To a current marketeer, it may feel a bit dated (many of the examples are dependent on using snail mail and fax machines) but it given how many large IT projects are centered around database marketing, it's worthwhile reading for a lot of professionals and technical workers who may be missing part of the point of the systems they're developing.

Plan for the new marketing future with this book
This book helps bury mass marketing and even writes the tombstone "killed by relationship marketing." Chapter by chapter, this book spells out how to market to your customers instead of marketing your product. For instance, it shows you how to aim for customer share instead of market share. It is through examples that the authors show you how to win at 1:1 marketing. If you're in a competitive market or want to improve your marketing focus, read from it. Learn from it. And execute strategies from it. Neither you, your company, nor your customers will be dissapointed.

Roger Maris: A Man for All Seasons
Published in Hardcover by Donald I Fine (1988)

Good Biography Of Roger Maris!
This was a very good life story of Roger Maris. You get a good look at his early baseball years with the Kansas City Athletics.
He is then traded to the New York Yankees. As a result of this trade he is able to play on several world championship baseball
teams. The year that Maris broke the all time season homerun record is well covered. You get a good coverage of the day to day events of his life until he breaks the record of 60 homeruns
set by Babe Ruth. You are also told of the 61st homerun by Maris in good detail. This is a very good book about a record setting
baseball player. Read this. You will enjoy it.

Excellent blend of narrative and interviews honor Maris
Maury Allen's book is a touching tribute to one of baseball's greatest players. Written in part to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Roger Maris' 61 in '61 home run feat, it honors the tormented athlete with memories from the people who knew him best. Family, friends, and teammates reflect on and remember the man who was loved and hated for toppling Babe Ruth's home run record. Most of the book understandably focuses on the 1961 season and examines his upper Midwest childhood and his post-'61 career from such perspective. While Allen doesn't hesitate to weave Maris' record-breaking year into any stage of the narrative, he is careful to expose a gentler Maris the press actively ignored and defiled. The numerous interviews, including ones from Maris' father and high school coaches as well as players Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, and Mike Shannon, bring great honesty to his tortured character. It also is a strong attempt to redeem a player who in life never rose to the glory he deserved.

This book serves more as a biography of Roger Maris the baseball player and man who broke Babe Ruth's home run record than Roger Maris the person, and there's little on his personal and family life, perhaps echoing on page the private man he was in life. Nevertheless, it more than adequately creates a portrait of a small town hero whose devotion to baseball was never bested by his love for his family and friends.

Great Children's First Book of Prayer
A wonderfully simple, yet very meaningful, board book. While advertised for children of 1 to 3 years of age, the language is fairly simple and will appeal to children up to the age of 6 or 7 years. This book teaches toddlers and youngsters to thank God for their parents, homes, friends, to ask for God's protection for family, the ill, and even our pets, and finally delivers a message of living harmoniously with all the world's children, "like sisters and like brothers." The illustrations are delightful, with many details of interest to children. My child often enjoys spending time simply finding various objects in the coloful pictures. Highly recommended for any parent wishing to interest their youngster in how we relate to God.

A nice compendium of old but classic tales of nature.
This book wasn't written by Roger Caras, rather it's a selection of nature tomes by many of our well most well known writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries including Thoreau, Powell (on the Grand Canyon), Muir, Carson and Abbey.

Most likely some of them will be repeats for any lover of nature writings but it's nice to have them all in one place for rereading at will.
