north americas greatest bird hunting lodges and preserves
This is undoubtedly the best book on bird hunting in a very, very long time.It has given the reader the "Who,what, when, and where",in specific and pleasant language, with some inviting photos of the lodges. The author has skillfully gone from areas to hunt that are either almost free, to the quite expensive, using the same exacting detail about what kind of birds, their source, seasons, lodging availability, rates, directions to get there,...even down to tipping. A few paragraphs about each place makes you wish you were able to hunt them all.

Sympathetic -- but sharp-sighted -- bio of polar greats
Sir James Clark Ross went from end of the world to the other in a little wooden ship (or so it seems to me, comparing the expedition craft of the early nineteenth century with the supertankers and aircraft carriers of today).

His uncle, Captain John Ross, managed some of the most successful Arctic winterings-over of his time, as well as suffering some of the most appalling privations. (Captain John Ross' operant procedure for the prevention of scurvy deserves respect and praise.) At the same time neither of these gents was perfect in every respect, and Captain John Ross' career may be said never to have recovered from a premature decision he made to abandon a search for the Northwest Passage based on a disputed sighting of a mountain chain (later found to be non-existant) that would have made northerly progress impossible.

This book presents the accomplishments, and errors, of uncle and nephew in full recognition of their human failings and failures of judgment; but appropriately credits them for their accomplishments -- which are unexpectedly significant when seen as a whole.

It also traces the history of the animosity that existed between Captain John Ross and Secretary of the Admiralty John Barrow -- a relationship characterized by sometimes truly puzzling venom. It seems pretty funny now to read about the violence and vitriol with which the two of them spoke of each other in print, and there is probably something to be said about the cultural environment then versus now; but the conflict was very real, and had very real -- sometimes tragic -- repercussions.

This book may be very profitably read either by itself -- for the entertainment and interest it provides -- or in conjunction with Fergus Fleming's "Barrow's Boys," which also provides a window on the tension between Barrow and Captain John Ross (one is tempted to say, sometimes between Captain John Ross and the world).

It is a biography that covers a remarkable span of Polar exploration during the glory years of Royal Navy expeditions. A readable and intriguing study of the careers of two of the English-speaking world's more influential Polar explorers!

The Principal's Companion
I have used the book in a variety of my educational administration classes including Introduction to Educational Leadership,The Principalship and Educational Administration Internship. The book provides the student with an opportunity to simulate many of the activities a principal typically engages in on the job. In addition, the In Basket Simulations, which are real scenarios, provide the student an opportunity to engage in problem analysis. The book serves to complement more traditional textbooks in educational administration.

The human body in a book
Wonderfully intense and extensive, yet well thought out and applicable. Extensive references allowing easy cross-bridging of information. Applicable from the most simple to the most complex concepts. Probably too deep for the average non-medical person, but easily lends self to anyone willing to study the material. I love it, and I am looking forward to an updated edition.

Excellent book for educators.
As an educator, I think this book is one of the best I have read on this subject. It is factual and covers both social and medical aspects of HIV infection and AIDS. Its focus is scientific but it explains a wide range of technical concepts (eg current drug therapies, methods of detection) in suprisingly easy and straightforward terms. It has a very humane feel to it as its authors are both AIDS physicians and scientists involved in the searching for better therapies. I think this book can truly help people learn about AIDS.

What bittersweet memories
Well what a read. This book covers the history of the Roys from the clubs foundation to its sad expulsion from the AFL in 1996. If any fan had a doubt about how glorious a history our club had then this book is a must. So many 'firsts' were achieved by this club, so much tradition, so much spirit....and all this meant nothing to the powers that be. Tons of great pictures from the 19th century to the modern era and at the end of the book, a complete record of every person who ever played a senior game for the Lions. Perhaps a new edition could be made to cover the clubs rebirth in the VFL as Coburg-Fitzroy, as well as covering the Brisbane Lions. This book is a great read and a must for any true fan of the Fitzroy FC.
