REMEMBER THE FUTURE
At a time when music criticism has degenerated into little more than fawning declarations of "best ever", "profound", "unique" and any other in-the-service-of-sales bromide you can stomach, it becomes even more important to take serious note of what comes from people who truly love music.

As he tells us early on, Archie Patterson was raised on records. Music is such a big part of his life that he turns out to be the right man at the right time. Because, while the U.S. might have been drowning in disco during the 1970s, Europe was the home of some of the most compelling, innovative and advanced bands to ever perform or record. Compelling and important enough to lead to the publication of Eurock, which stands far apart in the world of fanzines as an authentic journal of the people, the bands and the ideas that continue to inform and shape the many forms of alternative music today.

The 700+ pages of "Eurock, European Rock & the Second Culture" is nothing short of the definitive word on alternative, experimental and progressive European music written from the perspective of listeners and enthusiasts committed to furthering the cause of an alternative music and the culture it represents. The book's scope is encyclopedic, providing criticism, reviews and interviews with artists and groups, articles on independent labels, technology and instrumentation. The book even offers a rare article by Lester Bangs on Amon Duul.

Organized by years, from 1973 - 2002, this book provides information about virtually every important and not-so-important independent and alternative artist you could hope to read about from Europe, the U.S., Japan and points beyond. But much more than music comes through. As the title implies, the writings in this book are part of a time of profound cultural change which was in many ways inseparable from the music in question. Patterson asks us to look not only at the music, but at the social and cultural context of what helped make such music possible, and do so through the voices of the musicians and their audience. It is this aspect of "Eurock, European Rock & the Second Culture" that makes it such an important and authoritative collection of thoughts and observations of music and how music operates in the world. And what you'll find is simply that what mattered in the early 1970s continues to matter today, and will always matter to those that understand music to be more than entertainment or distraction.

So while the current crop of self-styled critics can spare us only a minute or two to tell us and sell us that something is "great" while they already have their eyes and ears on whatever the industry tells them is "next", pull out your copy of Eurock and spend your time with the people and ideas that have remained true to music, for the love of music, for more than three decades.

Australian MD stumbles across cause of SIDS
Dr. Kalokerinos, a medical GP working in the Australian outback with the Aborigines, discovered that vitamin C prevents sudden infant deaths (SIDS) brought on by malnutrition and by the introduction of immunization shots. Infants near death were revived by vitamin C injections, and the 50% death rate (hence the title) in the region dropped to near zero during his 8-year practice. Deaths rose to former levels after he was drummed out by the Australian health authorities.

Dr. K found his clinical observations and conclusions ridiculed & ignored by the authorities, and still suffers hostility, persecution and shunning by the medical establishment.

His work is deservedly praised by other medical heretics including Pauling, Klenner, Cathcart and others who challenge the myths that shots are health-giving and that vitamin C is good only for preventing scurvy.

A great book by a great doctor, it should be read by every caring current or future parent. Pediatricians and MDs in general too.

A wonderful book chronicles a more simple and slower time.
I first read this book in high school in 1982. A copy was in the school library. I grew up in the Minneapolis area but spent summers on my uncles farm in New York Mills, Minnesota when I was younger. I enjoyed the book and more so the illustrations. Even today I often look for the book in used book stores. I know of three copies in circulation. Often I'll stop by to read them and remember. The book is well written and follows the lives of a simple farm family. I find myself even today wishing for that simpler pace of life and the contentment that the subjects seemed to experience. I would recommend the book to anyone. It is more so a picture book than one just for reading. I would caution readers who once spent time on farms or who long for a simpler time to prepare for various emotions. It is one of those rare books where you feel as if you are there in the pages experiencing the activities and lives of the Hamner family. It is a reminder of the way many of us wish things could be.

Struggles and Joys of a Pioneer family
Read it at once like a novel or in chapters like a series of vignettes, this delightful book features difficulties facing a farm family, and rejoices at their victories and grieves over their sorrows and defeats. Enjoy the mischievous pranks of a bunch of farm kids who invented ways to make their hard work more fun, and how their jokes sometimes turned into expensive lessons when things went awry. The intense desire for education that drove these farm boys to make enormous sacrifices in order to have an opportunity to achieve their goals is inspiring. This is a great book for young folks who are wrestling with lifes tough questions, and how faith, persistance and determination can lead to fulfilment of dreams.

Going Home: Stories

Incredibly Powerful...
I bought this book when I was in Darwin, Australia at the suggestion of a local guide who had had many rueful and thought-provoking discussions with his backpacker clients (including me) about why aborigine people were often found drunk and sleeping out under the stars.

Certainly there are reflex explanations a dominant society uses to dismiss the inexplicably self-destructive or irresponsible behavior of a racial minority, but the truth is always much more complex. Sometimes fiction is the clearest way to explore complex truths.

Coming Home may be firmly set in Australia, but the conflict between cultures and races explored in it is all too common. I enjoyed reading Rian Malan's My Traitor's Heart, which I feel is in the same vein as this book, and those who are students of race relations in America will recognize disturbingly familiar echos in the title story.

Conclusion? Finely drawn stories with an on-location feel that seem to depict universal problems with no easy solutions.

You could call it literature or just a damn fine read. I'd call it both.

Handbook of Turtles: The Turtles of the United States, Canada, and Baja California (Comstock Classic Handbooks)

Absolute classic
This book not only is an invaluable factual resource for anyone interested in turtles, it's written in Carr's delightful and completely readable style. He says, for example, about people who intentionally run over turtles, that there "is probably nothing much that can be done about these people except to hope they skid." A great book for anyone who loves nature, turtles, or just good writing.

The Horn, Life of Yardbird Parker
I read The Horn about 20 years ago now and interviewed Mr. Holmes at the University of Arkansas. This is a great read for the enthusiasm of the Beats for bebop jazz and jazz's connection with the whole Beat movement. As a student assigned to interview the university's resident Beat writer, I paid a visit to Mr. Holmes and drank a six-pack of beer and spent the afternoon and early evening with Mr. Holmes who talked more about Kerouac and Ginsberg than himself. He referred to Kerouac as a genius, and was exceptionally modest and considerate. However, I think his work stands up with the rest of the Beats and is very good. This is my favorite of his books. I find it interesting it's being released as a paperback in 1999. The Beat Generation is being passed to Generation Y.

A Must-Read!
Poor Archie! Trying to win his stern old father-in-law over, only to land himself in deeper trouble! Getting locked out of his artist friend's apartment in a scarlet bathrobe, and many more such money-making schemes gone haywire, including those to get his f-in-law's approval. The portrait gone awry, and the shoes left outside the door.... Oh no! I'm not going to tell you anymore, you just must read this, and you'll find yourself laughing uncontrollably wondering how you ever thought the world was a drab place! With Wodehouse, there is always laughter in the world!
