Dated but Amusing Collection of Previously Uncollected Stuff
People Have More Fun Than Anybody collects 19 of Thurber's stories/articles/letters, several cartoons, and one recipe that have been previously uncollected. Surely this is a classification that would have amused Thurber no end--are they now "non-uncollected" stories? In "Help! Help! Another Classificationization" Thurber sets himself against exactly this mindset. And frankly, at this late date in the late humorist's career, such a criteria for inclusion assures that the book will not bring us the best of his work.

However, Thurber is almost always witty, and even though some of the pieces are dated and irrelevant, all of the writings evoke at least a smile. The cartoons don't fare as well, some of them being merely puzzling. The end notes tell us that some cartoons had different captions in their original stages. The most wildly different is a picture of a woman leaning forward and speaking intently to a man. The published caption is "If I told you a dream I had about you, Mr. Price, would you promise not to do anyting about it unless you really want to?", but the earlier caption on Thurber's original drawing was "If they never found the husband's body could they do anything to the wife?"

This is essentially a collection for the die-hard Thurber fan (who are rather few on the ground these days, it seems) only. Others will probably do better to read The Thurber Carnival.

Stop referring to graphs & fig. that are on the next page!
It's so annoying to read about graphs and figures that appear on the next page. If the authors are going to cite these visual tools have them on the same page whenever possible. Of course it is unrealistic to expect that everytime but in the K&R book this occurred 90% of the times. It's annoying when you have to flip the pages. This annoyance knocked 3 stars from what would have been a 5-star rating.

What's right about the text?

The economics is sound and the teaching is concise. Bravo in that regard.

Clarity has its price: Verbosity
Is it: a)wordy, b)understandable, c)good in explaining concepts? All three, interestingly.

I've seen better (Mankiw) AND worse (the name slips my mind, but it was from a professor in Iowa) microeconomics texts. The main problem is that in striving to explain the concept (which the author does very well), he really beats it in. But if you miss lectures (or have a new prof who teaches from the book, as was my case), then you should do no wrong with this book.

Does the job it was written for
This is a very well written textbook. There are many textbooks out there on the markets and this one has been written with the beginning reader in mind. It is just too easy to scare the beginner with too-serious, too-academic dry language. Economics is fun to learn and the first textbook a student ever keeps in hand should make him interested, curious, wanting more and more, and of course, amused. The language of Katz and Rosen's textbook is by no means frivolous, but it is entertaining. They do not pull the rabbit out of the hat and startle the reader. Instead, they guide readers from familiar environment towards the unknown, always being down to earth and somehow, interestingly, economic theory sneaks in - in the meantime.

The order of theory presentation and the structure of the book really facilitate learning. I have used this book with the introductory microeconomics course, along with a few other ones - just for a test. They all preferred this one so we stuck with it for the remainder of the course.

In the middle of the book one finds a transparency with a graph, which, when applied, shows the effects of some parameter change. Excellent idea, as the student can see dynamically what happens with the application. It's like a hand-operated video... It's a pity that there is only one such transparency.

In summary, recommended for most introductory courses in microeconomics. it will keep students interested and will not scare them at all. Why want anything more?

One Star is Too Many
As an elementary teacher who loves poetry, I am always looking for collections to share with my students. This book is awful. It's full of strange obscure poems about animals getting slaughtered. Here's one of Rosen's "gems"

Ravens gnawing
men's necks
blood spurting
in the fierce fray
hacked flesh
battle madness
blades in bodies
acts of war
heroes felled
hounds cut down
horses mangled
tunics torn
the earth drinking
spilt blood.

I almost think this book is a spoof or a joke, there are so many poems similar to this one in this collection.

The previous reviewer is correct--one star is way too much for this piece of offensive, cruel, insensitive, horrible collection.

A World of Poetry
Well, unlike the other two reviewers, I enjoyed reading these poems to my children. I reviewed the book in the store before deciding to buy it. The two poems that were given as examples can be considered another way. The poem of war is very descriptive and true to life. Should war be viewed antiseptically? Should children believe war is a good easy thing the way our current administration would have us believe? The poem about the teacher was funny. Teachers come in with daggers in their eyes. The poem was symbolic. You know about symbolism don't you? What's wrong with getting the kids' attention, showing them that poetry isn't all stopping by the woods on a snowy evening. I've got tons of sweet poetry books for the early years. Many of these poems are great discussion starters. My kids listened intently. My son started some prose immediately after.

good challenges for thinking
The British have done it again! This is a collection for children who have enjoyed nursery rhymes, played with rhyming humor, laughed at Prelutsky and Silverstein and now are ready for more meaty poetry.

Students are expected to understand personification, simile, metaphore and ever so much more on standardized tests. Here is a collection that will give them the material in which to find those styles embedded in meaningful thoughts.

My fourth graders begin with "Knock at a Star" edited by Kennedy and then use this collection in the spring. I've bought class sets of both of these and the students are well ready to be led into understanding the deeper thoughts and feelings that poets embed in their poetry. Don't sell them short.

The COMet crashes
The title of this book should be; "How to use IONA's COMet." This book is very vendor specific. From experience, IONA's COM-CORBA bridge is very slow due to all of it's dynamic implementation. This book tells very little about how the different IDL's map to each other.

doesn't match the topic
I bought the book and read it twice and found it was not what I expected. I easily get lost in the chapters and example. But it did give some useful and helpful data

Fairly ok, but not enough concrete examples
The book is ok, but it doesn't leave you with enough information to sit down and write code with a COM/CORBA bridge. The other poster that said this book is biased to IONA's COMet product is incorrect though - I don't think COMet is even mentioned in the text, which is a shame, since COMet is the most popular COM/CORBA bridge around.

Not a pleasant book for anyone who cares about animals
This book is not for anyone who loves cat and is looking for a collection of heartwarming cat stories. It is depressing and I found some of the stories to be outright cruel. If you are looking for a nice collection of cat stories by a veterinarian who writes fondly of cats, I suggest James Herriot's Cat Stories.

Do not buy this book
If you are a cat lover, do not be fooled by the title of this book. One would assume that this book would contain heartwarming stories of cats and their owners. That is not the case. Most of the owners in these stories don't even care about their cats. In one particular story, a man starves his cat to death. In another, a man poisons his cat with toxic paint. You are even led to believe that another man throws his cat into a bonfire. I was appalled by this book. This book should be thrown in the bonfire!

Too many dead cats
Some of the stories are fairly good. However, many are depressing, or worse. Do you really want to hear someone describe how his cat gets weaker and weaker and finally dies as he intentionally starves it to death? There are better collections of cat stories out there.
