lots of fun
I think this book is a fun way to introduce kids to poetry. The poem and Rosen's illustrations are delightful and the variety of foods mentioned is great. Its an exuberant book with lots to offer, bright illustrations and richly flavored poems on every page. Like a healthy diet, this well-balanced collection is satisfyingly easy to digest!

Food Fight: Poets Join the Fight against Hunger With Poems
Our After-school Book Bunch at Alexandria Public Library read the book Food Fight: Poets Join the Fight against Hunger With Poems to Favorite Foods. They each were asked to bring in a canned good for the local food pantry and while waiting to be served their MYSTERY MEAL the girls shared their favorite poems from the book. With six pre-teenage girls their favorite thing about the book of course, was that it was about food! They shared that they liked it when they read about their favorite foods with the favorite poem being the August Ice Cream. It was Short & Sweet! They would recommend this book to people of all ages - IF they like poetry, food and to eat!

This is an ideal read aloud for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Bubbe always made Thanksgiving dinner. Now that she has passed away the family tries to recreate that dinner at the request of the youngest member of the family. When the lights in the house blow, a neighbor comes to the rescue in helping them complete the meal and cook their dinner. In fact, a number of their neighbors help. This book has a true spirit of giving and remembrance. Good read aloud at home or for classes. Excellent writing.

A Thanksgiving Tradition!
A Thanksgiving Wish by Michael Rosen has become a family story time tradition begining this year! The story relates to all ages and became a favorite the first time I read it to my eight year old daughter. I gave a copy to our minister and he used it as his sermon the Sunday before Thanksgiving! The story of family and community coming together combined with John Tompson's beautiful illustrations makes this a wonderful book! I love it!

Extremely touching story of family and Thanksgiving.
Michael Rosen read this story to us last Spring at the West Coast Literacy Conference in Anahem before it was published . There was not a dry-eyed person in the room when he finished. The story of a young girl and the relationship she has with her grandmother will touch your heart. How the family overcomes difficulties and celebrates a truly memorable Thanksgiving will renew your faith in tradition as it did the young girl's. I plan to read this story to my class if I can get through it without tears. I highly recommend it as a holiday read for both children and adults.

Captivating Stories
Although it is suggested for children ages 4-8, I often use this book for projects about countries around the world. The stories are descriptive with wonderful illustrations. Whoopi Goldberg is not the illustrator, but wrote the introduction for the book. The illustrations were done by many different people.

I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I took this out from the library and it was great! I liked the illustrations too. They were nice and colorful. I like hearing stories from around the world.

This Is Our House

A good book about sharing.
This Is Our House by Michael Rosen

George tries to keep girls, small people, twins, people with glasses, people who like tunnels, and everyone else on the playground out of the cardboard house they used to share, but when he leaves to go to the bathroom, he returns to discover that everyone else is now on the inside and he is left alone on the outside. "This house isn't for people with red hair" says Charlene to George. After a tantrum or two, George learns his lesson and declares that the house is indeed "for everyone." George's conversion and the easy acceptance of his friends teaches an important lesson about inclusion and not being selfish. The urban setting and children of many cultures are also nice touches that are not overdone. The text is well-written and the cartoon like illustrations are detailed and fun. This is certainly a good read and teaches kids important lessons about sharing and getting along. I have been looking for books that deal with these issues and this one does so without being didactic or heavy handed. If you like this book, you may also want to check out Junk Pile! by Lady Borton.

A place for everyone
This is a very fine children's book. It has a "message" without being saccharine-preachy. It is so evidently set in a multicultural, inner city area with the sort of kids my son mixes with at school everyday. Bob Graham is a terrific illustrator, and this one is not a let-down.

The children who are originally excluded by the "bully" take action to reclaim their place, and then teach George his lesson, before showing him that their more inclusive way is better than his selfishness.

The wicked tricks of Till Owlyglass
I think this book is realy funny. There are two boys who are realy naughty and get sent to an old man who tells the boys all about the wicked Till Owlyglass. The boys learn from the bad mistakes he has made and also the funny ones. There are so many good and wonderful jokes that happen on the way to the DEATH of Till Owlyglass!

Old legends revived
My pupils just love the stories. They can't get enough of the naughty and mischievous tricks of the medieval character Tijl Uilenspiegel (translated here as Till Owlyglass). Michael Rosen has masterfully retold the old legends into a form that appeals to the modern child -and adult with a child's heart. Any child between 9 and 13 will savour Till's tricks that make fools of his contemporaries. Highly commended as present.

With a Dog Like That, a Kid Like Me (Picture Puffins)

WITH A DOG LIKE THAT
A young boy has a wonderful imagination and believes that his dog becomes a pony when he runs around the yard, a kangaroo when he takes out his leash, a lion when he guards the gate, a mole when he burrows under the pillows on the couch, and other zoo animals. The illustrations are made with watercolors and outlined with a grease pencil. They are absolutely exquisite. Each page shows the different stages of the dog changing into the animal. This book will captivate young children and librarians alike. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

for dogs with kids, vice versa
This is a great book for families with dogs. It helps kids stretch their imagination while shedding light on the magical world that children and dogs create between themselves. The illustrations are fantastic. I highly recommend it!

Potentially excellent, but with flaws-
There were many admirable things about this book - among them, a likeable and believable child protagonist, good depictions of his relationships with the adults in his life, especially his mom and grandfather, and a plot Jewish children who love animals will easily relate to. In spite of these strengths, the book is seriously flawed. At one point, an adult tells the young boy that a Christian custom has nothing to do with Judaism, "just like Hannukah has nothing to do with Christmas and Passover has nothing to do with Easter". When I read this, I excalimed, "That's a lie! Easter has *everything* to do with Passover!" It also disturbed me that, though the boy approaches the priest as one of the adults he wants to poll (see the previous review for this plot point), he never actually *talks* to this man. He's scared of him, and that's presented as being okay. Up to this point, I had thought the book a fine ecuminical story that I wanted to share with the fifth graders when I visited our local school (I am a librarian). I did not. It struck me that interfaith dialogue could not be advanced by presenting an unfair and inaccurate picture of Christianity. And this could have been - and was, in many ways - such a good book! Mr. Rosen should have had a Catholic or Episcopalian friend read his manuscript and correct factual errors.

great for kids
Not only are the illustrations fantastic in this book, but the issues that are dealt with are done in a way that are sensitive to all sides of the dialogue. Religion is a hard thing to question, especially as a child, and Rosen creates a story that sensitively gets right to the heart of a child's concerns about belief. I believe this book encourages kids to contemplate their faith in a very healthy way. I highly recommend it!

blessing o f the animals
the blessing of the animals is a delightful story about a boy and his dog and his predicament regarding the dog's religious affiliation or lack thereof. Does a child's pet take on the religion of the child and family? Or can the pet share another religious affiliation by virtue of the fact that it is indeed an animal and is viewed "differently"? Or does the pet have a religion at all? These are the questions that the boy in the book needs to answer before making a final decision.

WORST EVER
This CD was the worst of anything I have ever heard or read. Out of six CDs, there were two Dave Barry's and two other stories that were bearable. The rest were lists: I mean lists that were numbered, like reading a menu that someone must have thought were funny. And several were things that came off much better when they were passed around in email.

hilarious
This book is non-stop funny. I believe that Mirth of a Nation is going to become a major pillar in the realm of humor writing. The pieces are well chosen--there is truly something here for everyone. The big names come through with hilarious material, as well as many I've never heard of (but hope to hear more from!) I can't wait for volume 2!

Subtitle is true: It really is the best contemporary humor!
Many humor anthologies are very hit and miss, and they also tend to be very much a "boys only" club. Mirth of a Nation is of the best I've ever seen, both in terms of quality and in including an good representation of women humorists. Michael J. Rosen has done an excellent job in compiling humorists such as Fran Lebowitz, Dave Barry, Mark O'Donnell, Jon Stewart, David Sedaris, Colleen Werthman, Patricia Marx and Henry Alford, just to name a few. This anthology would make a wonderful gift for just about anyone in any age group (it is pretty much "clean humor"). Treat yourself with it at any time, but especially if you are going to be on a plane, train, or subway. I hope they have many sequels!

An excellent book of photographs
This book contains very little text beyond the introduction.
It is a slim volume filled with excellently photographed pictures, in full color, and close up view of female gentalia.
The variety of colors, textures, and shapes of the women photographed are quite interesting
Details are very sharp and clear.

This is a book that would be enjoyed and appreciated by anyone who truly loves women, and finds everything about women fascinating.

No other aspect of the woman is pictured, and the women are not identified in any way.

In fact, the only reason this book did not get a 10 from me is because I would have liked to have a few details about each woman, such as ethnic heritage or nationality, age, marital status, and whether she had or had not given birth to children.

Excellent in every way.
This a book mothers should give their adolescent daughters and their sisters and their friends.

It is a book women should give their lovers.

It is a book the reveals a spectrum of female beauty few have ever seen. These pictures are presented without sensationalism and without censure. They work as art. They work as anatomy lesson. They work as images for a holy altar to the Great Mother of us all.

Suberb, extreme high quality photographic book
Although a small, thin book, this book is superb! It contains 32 color photographs of womens' vulvas; the photographs are extremely high quality, extremely beautiful, and extremely well printed. I like to show the book to as many people as I can; I think it's a brilliant book that all people should consider owning. It is the only book in this area I know of, and a companion Malia volume would be very welcome.

Sexual Magic: the S/M Photographs
Published in Paperback by Shaynew Pr (1992)
Author: Michael A. Rosen
Amazon base price: $30.00
Average review score:

Get a glimpse of Sexual Magic
It's surprising how less shocking this book has become since it was first published in 1986, but then again, SM has come out of the closet a lot in the last 14 years. Rosen was purposefully working with moving subjects and focus when he produced this first collection, so you get fragments of crisp view intermixed with soft focus. The photos are all black and white, shot live during "play" sessions of real-life BDSM practitioners, most of whom are from the SF/Bay Area. Comments, interviews and poetry from the subjects compliments the visuals.

An Insider's View Of S/M
This book isn't porn, it's almost an ethnographic study of people engaged in radical sexuality. If you are looking for a glossy wet dream of fantasy girls in leather then this isn't the book you want, but if you wish you could be in the middle of a real S/M scene with real players here it is. Rosen's artistry captures the passion and energy of the moment by using a journalistic soft focus and an amazing sense of what is most important to the participants involved. These are not models posing for the camera, they are players who have allowed Mr. Rosen (and by extension us) a privileged glimpse inside their most personal fantasies.

Review of Sexual Magic by Michael Rosen
In "Sexual Magic, The SM Photographs," photographer, Michael
Rosen, presents a unique view into the world of sadomasochism. This
book was first published over 10 years ago, and since that time we
have come to see more and more images of "fetish" and
"kink" bleeding into the mainstream media. However, these
are not posed photos of supermodels in expensive fetish attire. These
are real players "in action." Soft focus and graininess
gives movement to these action images. The photographs are alive.
The whips are not frozen in space. They are flashing blurs. Faces
reveal the movement of emotion: pain, joy, concentration, intense
sexual arousal. Besides the raw beauty of these images, what makes
this book especially valuable for the uninitiated viewer is the
first-person thoughts of its subjects. We learn from the pictures and
the players' words what S/M is really about for each individual. This
book is a classic for anyone interested in the range of human sexual
expression.
