A Readable Study of the Alliance's History
Niklaus and friends do a great job especially with the foundational period of the Alliance, probably because that was such a fascinating time. The Alliance started to "settle in" in the 1920s, and from then on, the tale can get dry with the exception (of course) of some of the great missionary stories, particularly those from the war years. Those who know the Alliance today and study this history may have some questions: why aren't many (if not most) Alliance churches still emphasizing divine healing like we used to? The Alliance used to have healing homes; Alliance fellowships used to hold healing services. By and large we don't do these things today -- but cannot God also miraculously heal today like he did then? I am grateful that my church does anoint with oil and pray over members who seek God's miraculous touch after communion, but as a denomination we've lost the focus on this that we once had (actually this was addressed by a recent Alliance Life article).

Yet this is not even really a quibble with the book. What you will come away with when you read this is this feeling: Praise God for the incredible work He has done and is doing.

A Well Crafted Potboiler Western
Allen Ring wins a ranch in a poker game. When he goes to claim it he finds mystery and romance against the backdrop of a festering controversy that threatens to erupt into a blood feud. With his trusty rabbit eared double barrel, a cur dog, and his wits as a gambler, he solves the mystery, defuses a range war, and wins the girl. All in all, a well crafted potboiler Western.

I'm not wild about audiobooks. I don't like having someone read to me. On the other hand, I love radio shows, both old-time radio and the modern BBC and CBC productions. When I'm on the road, there's nothing better than listening to radio shows on audiotape.

"Four Card Draw" is not a radio show, but it's not simply someone reading a story. It's an "Audio Dramatization," a sort of hybrid. You get the first person narrative of the story teller, but the dialog is dramatized with actors. Not quite as good as a radio show, but good enough to have me going back for more.

Good vs. Evil in 19th Century West
This tape will hold your interest, with all kinds of sound effects, music, and many different voices. It's well done. The story is just a tad trite, with that old dog, W. B. Van Hardin being such an evil fellow, and Tack Gentry such a gallant gentleman. Why did Tack leave his woman for two years? To raise money? A few silly questions in the flush of the excitement of Good winning out over Evil. Diximus.

Man of Many Frontiers
Man of Many Frontiers is a collection of diaries kept between 1885 and 1890 by Louis John Frederick Eager, nicknamed "Billy the Bear." Iaeger received his nickname from "Buffalo Bill" Cody, just one of the characters, some well known, that Iaeger became acquainted with during his amazing lifetime. Through his diaries, the reader catches a glimpse of life in western Nebraska at the time the frontier was fading. They offer a realistic view of an individual life as well as American life in general at the turn of the last century. Iaeger's journals begin when he joins the crew of a sailing ship, a career move he immediately regrets. The drudgery and difficulties of adapting to life on the ocean contrast drastically with the traditional romantic portrayals of the sailing life in fiction and the movies. The challenge of his first sea voyage, however, did not dissuade Iaeger from signing on with other ships, and he traveled to the Orient, Australia and Europe. Back in the United States Iaeger met William Cody while working as a stage actor in San Francisco. Employment as Cody's personal secretary enticed Iaeger to western Nebraska, and in the early 1880's Iaeger worked as a cowboy in Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming. He faced his biggest personal challenge when, caught outside during a four-day blizzard, Iaeger lost both legs and all of his fingers except his thumbs to frostbite. Undaunted by this loss, Iaeger learned to skillfully manage his artificial legs, returned to Cody's employment, and in 1885 settled in Chadron, Nebraska, a railroad boom town in the panhandle of Nebraska. Iaeger found a permanent home in the young town of Chadron and threw himself into public life there. A strong Democrat, he played an active role in local politics, serving as justice of the peace, city clerk, clerk of Dawes County court and deputy clerk of the United States District Court. As part of his court duties he saw more than his share of crime and drama in the frontier cow town, and his daily life in Chadron makes up the largest portion of his journals. The reader participates with Billy the Bear in the events, large and small, that transformed Chadron into a legitimate, thriving community. The reader also glimpses the physical difficulties Iaeger faced while becoming a prominent town father. Saloons and gambling, prostitutes and cowboys, partisan politics and natural disasters are all present in the diaries of Billy the Bear, which makes for a fascinating read.

Moti

Beautiful, elegant artwork
In a style similar to that of Asian ink paintings Moti elegantly captures the beauty of nature in his artwork. Moti's wonderful paintings, prints, etchings & drawings will draw you into the peaceful & simple world he creates.

In Moti's world ships glide across the ocean while the sun gently slips into the sea and flowers rest delicately in a vase. Trees stand silently against the blue gray sky or bend their branches to the blowing winds.

Horses prance and tigers prowl ready to pounce their prey. Owls sit softly on branches or extend their wings & slip into the night. Siamese cats stand stoically & fish swim by. A child sits quietly for a portrait.

The text is in both in English & French. It includes biographical information & extensive quotes from Moti himself. The introduction compares Moti's work with Turner's. There are also several photographs of Moti working.

Very worthwhile
This book is great both for people who want to create multimedia and have never tried before and for those people who have created multimedia products in an organic kind of way (that is it happened bit by bit rather than being a planned process...). The book gives a good background to technical issues, project planning and management issues and finishing off a product for release (among many other areas). It is not ideal for advanced product developers but great for people getting started or those that have already tried a bit but need some structure to what they are doing. I recommend it for my graduate students who have only attempted small multimedia projects in the past and are about to try a bigger project.

Oops! (Wheeler Large Print Book Series (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Wheeler Pub (1999)
Author: John Lutz

Used price: $39.85

A pretty good addition to the series
Loren Almer hires Lacy Tumulty to investigate the supposedly "accidental" death of his teenage daughter, who apparently tripped while going down a flight of stairs. Lacy has asked fellow St. Louis private investigator Nudger, a man she wants to make love with all night long, to assist on the case. Nudger thinks Loren and Lacy are crazy to feel foul play led to the death of Betty Almer. However, he reluctantly agrees to help Lacy on her case.

Nudger quickly changes his mind when Loren dies in a supposedly "accidental" house fire, Lacy is brutally beaten and crippled, and other individuals close to Betty begin to accidentally die. He realizes that he must uncover the identity of the culprit before he becomes the next target.

In his tenth outing, Nudger remains an interesting private sleuth though readers will wonder if he has stock in the pharmaceutical companies that make acid relievers. The support cast, especially the 110 pound dripping wet Lacy, who dares to go where no one would venture, is totally endearing. The story line starts fast, but OOPS! loses its OOMPH! before its over. John Lutz fans will enjoy this entry because it has all the Nudgering trademarks: donuts, antacid, plenty of action, and little ambition. However, most mystery fans who want to a more pleasant taste of Nudger would be better suited with one of the earlier tales such as DIAMOND EYES AND DANCER'S DEBT.

provides a respectable understanding for visual impairment
This illustrated children's book gives children an idea of how Braille was first invented. A story of Louis Braille is told, and it shows his triumphs. The book itself doesn't use braille, but a sample alphabet is given in the back to show children who have no experience with it what it's like. For educators, this book would be an asset to the elementary classroom because young children need to be informed and aware of blindness as an exceptionality.
