The death of Cardinal Bernardin
This book is a wonderful glimpse at the final days of one of America's most prominent Catholic leaders. Cardinal Bernardin embraced his trials with grace and dignity, and thus set an example for all of us. For those who would like a glimpse at the death of this great Catholic leader, I really can't say enough good about this book.

Buy it to read the Hamlin Garland story.
This is an outstanding collection, even though the first story is really weak. Hamlin Garland's great story echoes "Cold Mountain," with a soldier returning home from the Civil War to the woman he loves. Oddly, the editors said Garland was "probably a minor talent." Ever read "Daughter of the Middle Border?" Garland was not prolific, but he was definitely MAJOR.

This opera introduction is the ONLY one a neophyte needs.
This wonderful book has served me well in teaching high school students about the wonders of opera and how to appreciate this complex art form. DiGaetani's book contains succinct, self-contained chapters on the history of opera, the operatic voice, famous singers through the centuries, opera conducting, and opera as theatre. His brief yet pungent summaries of the principal operas in the modern repertoire are especially good. Additionally, the glossary of terms in the back of the book has been carefully selected not to overwhelm the neophyte while still providing complete, accurate definitions. Having taught opera appreciation for several years using only this book, I know how 'User Friendly' it is. I keep coming back to it year after year because it is so expertly crafted. Anyone who wants an introduction that is both comprehensive and accessible will find this book to be indispensable. Without question, a "Best Buy" for the price and length!

A great addition to your library
I got this as a gift and am very glad that I did. While not a complete identification tool like RIC or SEARS, this is an awesome book for someone starting out with an interest in Imperial coins. It provides detailed inscriptions, RIC and SEARS numbers for the coins pictured, then provides an index of inscriptions and subjects. Truly a great catalog of a collection I want to see in person. Worth the price.

This book has been out of print for years, yet is continually cited in current Steinbeck scholarship. It needs to be reissued.

At first there was the logos
This book answered for me the question of how Christians can claim to be followers of THE Way without denigrating and dismissing those of other faiths experience with God.

"At first there was the logos, and the logos was with God, and the logos was God. This one was at first with God. All things came to be through him, and apart from him not one thing that was created came to be. In him was life, and the life was the light of human beings. And the light is shining in the dark, and the dark has not apprehended it." Logos means "word", "saying", "speech", "reason", "plan", etc. It is differentiated from God, yet identified as God. The logos is the only link between God and God's creation. Our life is only resident in the logos. Not only life, but also light, that is, it shines in the dark -- everything that is not of God.

So, any path that leads to God is in the logos. There is no other way. "And the logos became flesh and lived among us... As for God, no one has ever seen him; the only-child God, the one who is in the father's bosom, that one has explained." And later this only-child God says, "I have other sheep, which are *not* of this fold; I must bring them also, and they shall hear my voice; and they shall become one flock with one shepherd."

It's a message that is so inclusive it includes ALL truth, and so exclusive because there is no other reality. The truth is not Christianity. The truth is the logos.

I've probably taken this conclusion a step beyond what the author has directly mined from translating on the original author's intent in the fourth gospel, but Countryman invites you to reflect on the truth and draw conclusions. It's more than a Bible study, it's an experience with God.

Great Book with Foreword by Freud
One of the best parts of this lovely book is the excellent foreword by none other than the late great Sigmund Freud. Who better to approach this "delicate" subject? Well written in period style, the book is cleverly edited to include amusing parts and can be quite shocking. A good read! Thanks to my Sister for buying me the copy, little did she know that I'd be putting it on the coffee table for visitors to read.
