Positively absorbing
A bonus 11-track cd comes with this portrait of eighty-eight pioneers and players of jazz piano, from Jelly Roll Morton to Benny Green. Here are insights on lives, techniques, and changing perspectives on jazz piano styles and artistry, enhanced by the author's personal experience as a jazz pianist and his original interviews with many of the players. Avid fans of the genre will find The Giants Of Jazz Piano positively absorbing.

Accounting Principles
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Companies (1993)
Authors: Jack L. Smith, Robert M. Keith, and William L. Stephens
Amazon base price: $17.50
Used price: $5.00
Average review score:

Excellent introduction to accounting.
I speak from my own experience with the 3rd edition of Accounting Principles: this text comes from masters of teaching. Rather than begin with definitions, the authors first submerse you into the course of thought by describing a business problem, then deploy accounting concepts designed to solve it. They grudge no efforts making sure that you understand them correctly-and you do, because the partition between the teacher and the student is removed. Highly recommended.

The Archaeology of Disease
Published in Hardcover by Cornell Univ Pr (1995)
Authors: Charlotte Roberts and Keith Manchester
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

Well-written and intelligible
Well-written and intelligible book on the archaeology of disease.
Good discussions both of manifestations of disease in individual
skeletal remains, and in populations. Mostly oriented towards
disease per se, but there's a good chapter on trauma, as well.
Especially good coverage of dental disease. Oriented towards an
academic, rather than towards a lay, audience, but I found it
very readable nonetheless.

Buddhist Fariytales
I had to read this book for a course on Tantric Buddhism and it was so much fun to read. There is a great introduction which explains a bit about Tantra and some of the terminology in the book. The book is about the mahasiddhas or exemplars of this tradition. The book consists of short stories, about two pages each, of the enlightenment and adventures of these religious people. The best part about it is that they all went through these rigorous mental and physical states to reach Enlightenment and none of them got there in quite the same way. There are thiefs, kings, and young women who have interesting and fun tales to read. I would recommend reading some of these stories for children at bedtime but be careful choosing which one, those Tantrics can get a little crazy!

An ideal tool for teaching poetry to high school students.
I teach high school English. My students are wild about this book. That's all I have to say, and an astute reader will recognize immediately that nothing more need be said.

Bataan Death March - detailed account
One of the most acclaimed (and most sought after) books ever written on the Bataan Death March. The book details the true story of General Robert Preston Taylor during World War Two. A enlightening read and one that really should be part of any comprehensive personal WWII reference library.

Classic novel by British SF master
Gráinne

Gráinne, quite simply, is unique; a moving and magical tour de force that ranks with Keith Robert's best works.

Ostensibly, the novel charts the career of one Alistair Bevan, writer and adman, from his beginnings in a post-war Midland town. Here though any parallels with our world cease. Through Bevan's vivid memories we meet Gráinne; blue-stocking seductress, darling of the media. Painfully human yet mysterious as her great namesake, the girl-goddess doomed by her own proud nature who plunged all Ireland into war and shadow. But there's very much more. Gráinne proposes new and starling answers for the origins of the Celts themselves, answers that irrevocably link the fate of East and West; though the wide-ranging narrative wears its erudition lightly. We glimpse Oxford in the sixties, Ireland and Wessex, a London that has yet to be; through and between them, like the spirallings of Celtic thought itself, runs a strange graffito. How does it relate to the tenets of the Buddha, the heady eroticism of Hindu art? One by one the answers are made; by Gráinne, human and divite, a proto-myth for the new millennium.

Handbook of Research on Sport Psychology

A must for coaches
This book is tremendously valuable for the coach who is seeking to maximize his/her performance as a coach as well as maximize his/her players' performance. In the major areas of sport psych, the chapter editors have done all the research for you. In most cases they have broken down the information so that the everyday coach can understand at least some of the research results. Don't plan on curling up with this one on a Sunday afternoon though - 900 pages of pretty heavy stuff. Better use this one more as a reference book to solve problems or develop a strategy.
