One of the best literary magazines around
Open City consistently publishes great stories, poems, essays, and artwork. I look forward to each issue, because each one is so different, and because this magazine continues to be vital and relevant, esp. because many literary magazines are so staid and dull....

Peasant Wars of the Twentieth Century

Tallent in mixing history and anthropology
Wolf's treatment of a so ideological subject, peasant wars, shows all the tallent and capacity of a intellectual who worked mainly in the US, although he was born in Austria. This fact helps us to understand a littlle more of his work as an anthropologist aware of the importance of a renewed history. Eric Wolf left Europe after an experience in the nazi's concentration camp in World War II. In this camp, he met and had classes with Norbert Elias. Some people say this is a fundamental fact on Wolf's career, because, as we can see, the problematic of power undergoes all along his opus. In Peasant Wars, Eric, worried about the US involvement in the Vietnam conflict, tries to understand how peasant people get involved with revolution. In order to understand this fact, Eric studies six cases of peasant revolution in the twentieth century: Mexico, Russia, Nigeria, China, Vietnam and Cuba. As the analysis goes through, we can almost smell the tallent of Eric, because although he were a marxist, the study don't fall in dogmatism. This book is essential to all the people who wants to understande the contemporary world.

The Caged Bird May or May Not Sing
SCHUMANN is a work of sound and thorough scholarship, refreshingly free of cant, pomposity, bombast, condescension, self-aggrandizement and arrogance, six pillars in the temple of bad academic writing. Mr. Jensen's thoughtful prose is eminently readable, his argument clear and convincing thanks in no small part to a masterly balancing of distance from and sympathy for his primary subject. The plight of temperament (in Schumann's case, genius) in conflict with ignorance, incomprehension, complacent professionalism and "benign" authoritarianism continues to be a matter of interest and concern. Who or what today would keep Schumann in a cage?

Scooters
Published in Paperback by Motorbooks International (1995)
Authors: Michael Dregni, Robert H. Ammon, and Eric Dregni
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

"Quite possibly, it is the best scootering book of all time"
Just when I thought nothing could top the Dregni's earlier book (Illustrated MotorScooter Buyer's Guide), they have come up with another masterpiece with their new book Scooters! In Scooters! the authors trace the history and development of the scooter and make an ambitious attempt to show the effect of the scooter on society and popular culture. The book boldy attempts a full tour de force of the wonderful world of scooters and scootering.... Visually, the book is dazzling. Drawing from archival photos, advertisements, and brochures, many long forgotten or unknown images appear for the first time. Like the text, the photographs are often whimsical and attempt to cover the full panorama of scootering....If you are looking for a book to introduce a friend to the joys and romance of scootering, this is definitely the book. Quite possible, it is the best scootering book of all time. --John Gerber, American Scooterist magazine, Autumn 1996

Sirko and the Wolf: A Ukrainian Tale
This is a charming book. This makes a nice introduction to extended family (albeit canine), friendship and helping each other in times of need. It also provides a discussion point or lesson in the shortsightedness of setting a particular value on something and not appreciating true worth. These lessons are engagingly delivered in a story children and adults can relate to. The illustrations are colourful and rich in detail. This book also provides a periferal look at another people, time and culture through the illustrations and setting of the story. This book makes a wonderful gift for a child that has a Ukrainian ancestry and heritage. It is unique and one they can be proud of.

A book for learning how to think
I bought this book as a recommendation of Aho's Foundation of Computer Science in order to develop intelligent recursive algorithms. However, this book is not a programming book (althought it helps programmers a lot) but a very interesting mathematical book showing a whole new way to think with the aid of some classical examples.

Public Relations Kit For Dummies
I will be shaking up my entire marketing department as a result of the insights this book gave me. Finally a pr book written for those of us not practicing pr for a living. I bought this book strictly from the reviews here on Amazon and I see some poor ones that have been added since I bought and read the book. Hopefully low intellect is not contageous!

Public Relations Kit For Dummies
I am a college professor who has taught this topic for almost 30 years. I had one disapointmentin reading this wonderfully well written book about the trade of public relations. Not much history about how the art was practiced vs. how it is now. That one criticism aside, the book was the most insightful, inspiring, unique, thought provoking book I may have come across in my teaching career. It will surely be required reading at my classes. Unfortunately the title of the book does it no justice. This book should be read by both novice and old pro. Five stars! A delight to read. A rarer delight to learn. My thanks to the authors for teaching an old dog some new tricks!

Public Relations Kit For Dummies
I owned and ran a mid size agency in NYC, LA, London, and Toronto for 35 years before selling the company and settling into retirement. I think I have read every title on the topic. This is the single best resource I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The author knows the field. His perspective is both unique and refreshing. The language is simple to understand. The logic is sound. The examples the author uses in the book are first hand experience and were fun to read about. The only shame of this title is I fear that your average CEO or Marketing Manager will not read it because of the title. That would be a huge mistake! Fabulous reading!
