Great Catalog
I thought this book was great! The pictures of the objects are beautiful. Where a picture could not be obtained there is usually a detailed sketch of the object. The descriptions give not only insight into use of the archaological object but also surrounding information like similar objects and archeological context. Then the essays descibe the time period and unknown/debated issue of Egyptian Archeology. As a newbie to Egyptian Archaeology I found the book easy to read and felt that things were explained well.

The heritage of Native American mounds and mound groups
Originally published in 1855, I. A. Lapham's The Antiquities Of Wisconsin has been out of print for decades. An invaluable compendium of Wisconsin's diverse and impressive archaeological heritage of Native American mounds and mound groups (a very large number of which have since been destroyed by farming and urban development), contemporary archaeologists and researchers continue to rely upon Lapham's maps and descriptions to locate vestiges of sites and help reconstruct the antiquarian cultural landscape of Wisconsin. This new and much appreciated edition from the University of Wisconsin Press is enhanced with a foreword by state archaeologist Robert A. Birmingham, as well as an informative introduction by leading Lapham scholar Robert P. Nurre. The Antiquities Of Wisconsin is an absolutely essential, core addition to personal, academic, and community library Wisconsin archaeology and Native American studies collections.

The Art of Robert Bateman is superb & endearing.
To see a Robert Bateman work is to glimpse a moment in Nature's time when an elk treks across a vast winter landscape of snow, conifers & mountains; or a stream bank where tender green plants glow against the moist earth & a minute bird perches; or a trumpeting bull elephant confronts you in a storm of dust. Roger Tory Peterson has written an expressive introduction & Ramsay Derry's profile of the artist makes good reading - especially as he's included a history of who Robert Bateman is; where he's lived; several works-in-progress sketches; photos of the artist in action & on location. A worthy addition to your library.

Excellent Overview of Media Studies Methodologies
In a critical writing course I taught in Spring 2002, I used Channels of Discourse, Reassembled as the core text for the course readings. The many chapters within are written by the best of the best in the fields of media studies and cultural studies, and the methodologies are presented in an easy-to-read manner which is informative and full of examples and case studies. This is an excellent book for media studies students, as its chapters lay out the basic information they should know about many of the methodologies often used in media criticism.

Not a film history but a book about DOING film history
This is a great book, especially helpful if you are trying to learn how do do historical research. The author, himself a well-respected film historian, reviews several established formats (eg. economic history, social history, technological history) then offers a guide for those trying to do this sort of work. Especially useful for the film instructor or graduate student.

Enchanting and Thought Provoking
This enchanting work brings the burlesque back to life! When Lydia Thompson hit New York theaters in 1868, she and her troupe were an immediate success. But she also initiated a vituperative debate over the appropriate limits for the female performer. Robert Allen vividly describes how Americans increasingly put aside their religious reservations and took to the theater by the mid-19th century. He first examines the physical and social arrangement of space within the theater auditorium. He then takes his reader on a journey through the male-impersonating, revealingly attired, slang-spouting, minstrel-dancing burlesque women to their descendants - the cooch dancers and modern day striptease. A unique book for entertainment buffs and feminist thinkers alike. To read actual burlesque plays see "The Best Burlesque Sketches".

By mixing careful Biblical study and analysis with personal stories of application, Robert A. Peterson has given us a book that is understandable by all, and yet worthy of a scholar's study. This is a truth that needs to be studied and meditated upon over and over again. Highly recommended!
