When cleaning out my mother's book case this little book grabbed me with it's cover and title. Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down! It's so entertaining and engrossing -- from the author's reactions from his wife to his obsessive search for a more exotic seed to plant -- this book reels you in. The author's quest and passion are infectuos. I find myself examining fruit salads at dinner parties and asking my shoked host "Did you throw away the top of your pineapple? You know, it can grow into it's own plant!" I can't imagine that a book similar to this would exist nor what it's genre would be called... but if it's found please let me know!

I bought this book in a discount rack - and thought it was delightful. Tried growing lots of the suggested plants and had great success. The book was so much fun - I found six new copies and gave them as Christmas gifts that year - and all the recipients were just as delighted with this 'find' as I was! A must for anyone who likes growing things, or has wondered how in the world do you get that Mango seed to germinate.

This is a gardening book with a witty, narrative personality. Until it's reissued, and it should be, it's on my list of books to rescue from a burning building. Langer is a nom de plum according to my vintage 70's paperback and for the last 25+ years I've wondered, who is that masked man? In searching just now, I learned he has continued to sporadically publish cooking and gardening books into the 1990's under the name of Langer, always with an illustrator named Susan McNeill. The fact of the illustrator is of interest because Langer often mentions his wife named Susan in the book, her character emerging as the involuntary poster child for tolerance of spousal obsessions. I had wondered if their marriage, not to mention her sewing shears, had survived his early adventures in plant science. And yes, by the way, his advice is practical and I've gotten some plants out of it over the years.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then this lovely children's book is a novel! It's charmingly told & drawn with some quite serious ideas to tell. Just who teaches us? How do we learn & why? A good book to ask questions about afterwards. ...

This is the third time we are checking this delightful book out of the library, so it's definitely time to buy it. My just turning three year old loves this book and has us read it to him every night. The pictures are great, and he has this story down to memory also, as someone else mentioned in their review. I would recommend this book to anyone with a 2-5 year old in mind..

I got the book in the mail today. I don't think I will be able to put it down for one second anytime before next Friday. It is simply the best photographic account of 18th century clothing detail that I have ever seen. I LOVE IT!!!

A good book for those interested in this era...someday, though, there will be a perfect one with such photos and then drawings and pattern from the costume, such as the perfect Janet Arnold books! I do like this book a lot and it has given me good help in my work.

WHAT a wonderful book. Never has a museum published a more mouth-watering and so informative reference book. Forget the idea that all museum publications are dry and arid - even if you don't really like costume or fashion you MUST look at this book. The photography is of the very highest quality. If a picture is worth at least a thousand words, then there are millions of words in this book - millions of words that have never been coined, but which describe the small minutae - the rich colouring - the magnificent designs and craftmanship - the hitherto unsuspected marvel of a seam or a collar - the small pattern that you would never have noticed in a figured silk. Every library and art gallery and museum must have a copy of this book. Even artists ought to buy a copy, because it is invaluable as a source for design and ideas. I highly recommend this book. You can almost feel the satins and stroke the embroideries, feeling their texture. Dress is definitely an art form. Just ask this book with a mere glance, and you will get your answer - a resounding YES. The reviews below say this so much better than I could.

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Written by Dale Susan Brown and Richard Nelson Bolles(Author of What Color is Your Parachute), it is a simple and concise guide to finding a job if you have a disability. It pulls no punches and tells it the way it is.
It gives simple, concise advice on how to conduct a job search, and what to do in an interview. It tells you how keep a prospective employer from getting nervous about your disability, and how to communicate in an interview in an honest and positive way.
If you are person with a disability this is a terrific book, if you have a co-worker with a disability, it is a terrific book, if you have people working for you with disabilities it is a terrific book, and if you are a "normal" person (whatever that is...} it is a terrific book.
The advice in the book leverages the expertise of both authors and is sound and easy to understand. It also helps you to do a better job, once you have employment. The book is highly recommended for everyone!

WOW - What a book, co-authored by Dale Brown and Richard Bolles, the world known author of What Color is Your Parachute. Dale and Richard have developed a book full of concepts, how to and methods for empowering those of us with disabilities to want to seek out employment against the roadblocks that confront the normal job search.

The book is a MUST READ! A "must read" for even people who are currently employed; as it will give you the insight of what a person with a disability will go thru during their job search. Any temporary able bodied person may become disabled at any time in their employed life. Your "employment life" will be altered forever; thru no fault of your own doing.

No one chapter stands out. Each chapter carries its' own weight for the total read of this outstanding document.

I wish the authors great success with an excellent and easy to read reference book and a solid companion to WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE!

The authors have broken down yet another barrier!

This is a great book for the individual with a disability who is thinking about getting off public assistance or who is just planning to switch jobs. This would also be a good book for any employer who might hire an individual with a disability.

Often both employers and prospective employees have misconceptions about what the law says about disabilitiy. The book explains how the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) protects individuals with disabilities. At the same time, it also explains what the ADA will not do.

I particularly liked the section on creative ways to interview for a job. Having a disability may make one seem strange and unfamiliar to a prospective employer. The book suggests creative ways to emphasize how one is also similar to the employer. Even if you do not have a disability, you may still want to read some of these clever suggestions.

It is often difficult to get disability benefits in the first place. This makes returning to work seem a risky proposition: What if you try to go to work and you are really not ready. If you fail, will you lose your disability benefits and have to start all over again? The book explains ways to protect some degree of benefits while easing back into the work force.

The two authors blend their areas of expertise to produce an outstanding book. The book is divided into sections with clear explanations and objectives. In the back of the book there are useful appendices with resources for further help and support.

Now in its tenth edition, Legal Research: How To Find & Understand The Law by attorneys Stephen Elias and Susan Levinkind is a simple, direct, straightforward, "user friendly" guide to the extremely complicated and tricky topic of doing legal research. Individual chapters address how to properly frame questions in legal categories and efficiently look up relevant laws and case history. Legal Research is emphatically not a substitute for a consultation with an attorney; however, a close reading followed by judicious use of its fact-finding methods is a superbly effective way for non-specialist general readers to prepare themselves before sitting down with a billed-by-the-hour consultation with a licensed attorney or paralegal researcher!

If you have a modicum of introduction to the law, and need a guidebook on "how to" go about researching a legal question, this book is one of the best available. It does assume that you have some working knowledge of how law works, but is an especially good book for either first year law students or paralegal students beyond their introductory courses. Well worth having on your shelf.

I made a Minor Error....Section 18-9-111 of The Colorado Revised Statutes is a Class III Misdemeanor. By "Practice" alone, you will not be allowed access to a Court-Appointed Attorney or a Public Defender. By "Practice" alone you will be forced to complain to your District Attorney by means of "The Barker Test" about your lack of a Speedy Trial without using Profane or Vulgar Language - and about the D.A.'s not inforcing your State of Colorqado and The U.S. Constituttion's requierment to your being furnished a Court Appointed Attorney when you cannot purchase one. Don't forget to "Stand Mute" at any Arraignmment" that in the "Street Jargon" the Court of Colorado uses in calling your Arraignment a "First Appearance". After all, how can you enter a Plea of any kind withour your Contitutional Right to the Protection of a Defence Attorney? Don't forget to ask your Deputy D.A. for his/her business card so you can write the same "Barker Test" each week...to remind them that they went to a Law School of some kind, and are thought to be, by many, the Premier in Educated Minds in North America!

Once you are done with "The Barker Test" and have somehow acquiered a Public Defender, to write the Defender that you will have Letters of Memorandum to remind this Defender of what was said. Note that no one writes notes of conversations any more, and your Defender will need all the help you can give them! Please do not use much in the way of Latin Phrases, as this may scare the Defender into a Default or Reset mode....

Once you realize that you can do this as well as any attorney, be very afraid as your do "Discovery" from the D.A.'s office to find out what they have. Many Defenders are very busy

I used this book as the curriculum for a new Worship Skills/Catechism class we implemented last year at our church. The kids (grades 1-5) absolutely loved it! You would have thought they knew personally the kids in the book. It provided an avenue for our kids to discuss similar situations they had encountered in their own lives. And some of the theological discussions the catechism questions sparked were absolutely amazing. Whether you're looking for a family devotional or a basis for a church class, this is a great resource!

Catechisms continue to be wonderful teaching tools, even if they have fallen out of use lately. Susan Hunt has given us a real treasure. This book really makes some solid teaching fun and engaging for the kids. I love this book.

These authors have done a great job of taking the truths from the Children's catechism and relating them in understandable stories that my children really relate to. It focuses on the God revealed in the Bible and helps children to understand who He is and how He relates to them personally. I highly recommend this book.

I own the Great American Quilts books starting from 1987. They are among my most treasured books. I love these books because they include quilts from all over the country and from quilters of all different degrees of experience. My favorite part is seeing the photograph of the actual quilter (or quilters) and reading the history as to how they got involved in quilt making or what was the inspiration for their quilt or the history of the quilt's making. The photographs of the quilts are beautifully taken and color rich. Also included are the patterns for most of the quilts including the templates and fabric requirements. What could be more enjoyable than owning a book that captures the history and advances of quilt making? Truly a must have.

This book has a wonderful variety of patterns, both applique and patchwork, beginners and advanced quilters both will find patterns to their skill level. I also like the little tips scattered throughout the book, like working with little half triangle squares, making yo-yos. Some of the instructions also come with fancy quilting patterns, which I find very helpful. I also enjoy the little articles about the quiltmakers and their inspiration for making that particular quilt. I also find myself just looking through this book when I need to be inspired to finish another project!

This book has lots of inspiring quilts! From cozy country to sweet pastels to jazzy modern quilts, they all are great! I find I am picking up the book when I have a free moment or two just to browse, I seem to learn something new each time, or get a new idea to try on my next quilt project. I like that they feature a variety of styles, applique and patchwork, and offer tips on sewing curves and have some feathered quilting designs. I cant think of how they could make this any better!

For years I have wanted to tour World War One battlefields, and finally I came upon Before Endeavours Fade: A Guide to Battlefields of the First World War, by Rose E. B. Coombs. I read it cover to cover and felt doing so was the next best thing to touring those sites. When I finished reading this book, cover to cover, I thought this is better than going to each birthplace! It is certainly a lot easier, and I found it extremely satisfying to see each gravesite, all in the course of a couple hours, and to learn so many interesting things, like: What state has the most Presidential graves? Why is there a picture of David Rice Atchison's gravestone in this book? What President lived the shortest time after leaving office? If these sort of questions intrigue you, as they do me, get this book and revel in all the fascinating things you can learn from it.

This book is the only book I have ever read in less than 24 hours. It is, by far, the most interesting and best Non-Fiction book I have ever read. It is a must for Presidential Buffs like me!

Before reading Brian Lamb's terrific book about Presidential gravesites, I counted the number of these sites that I had visited....11 to be exact. Now, after finishing the book, I want to visit the remaining ones. Mr. Lamb's ability to teach us about the lives (and in this case, the deaths) of these remarkable public servants goes well beyond C-Span. He has crafted a most enjoyable and educational book...one that should be in every home. This is a book that can be read at almost any pace...each chapter is short and well-laid out. He reminds us that every president has been important in some way because of the fact that they have all held the highest office in America... not just Washington, Lincoln and the Roosevelts, but Fillmore, Arthur and Taft as well. How important is must have been, for instance, for the children of the nation to donate their pennies to build the Harding Memorial in Marion, Ohio. The death of a president is a major event in our country's history and Mr. Lamb (along with chapter postscripts by Richard Norton Smith, who further humanizes our presidents) has succeeded in a winning form with his book. I found nothing maudlin or morose about "Who's Buried in Grant's Tomb"...only a colorful walk through America's past.

I have a 9.5 year old beagle/aussie mix - Misty - who was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor three months ago. After her tumor was removed I discovered Dr. Pitcairn's book. Since then I have been feeding my two dogs his recipes with the addition of liver, eggs, and tuna fish occassionally for variety and some added vitamin A and oils. The change in Misty has been dramatic. There has been no return of her tumor (which I can't attribute solely to the new diet), but her energy has sky rocketed, her attitude is now much more pleasant, and other skin abnormalities she had developed (that the vets said were just due to old age) have completely disappeared. We bought a puppy a year and a half ago and for the first year, Misty would never play with him. Now they play constantly. Misty used to go back to bed right after eating breakfast, and now she is up before I am playing with the our younger dog. I can't believe the change. She will be ten years old in a few months and now acts more like a puppy than she did when she was two years old. I highly recommend Dr. Pitcairn's book. Even if you are not ready to start using a homemade diet full-time, he has a great recipe for a supplement to dry dog food to help you get started plus numerous other disease prevention techniques and tips. This book was well researched from his own experience as a vet and explains everything in amazing clarity.

For the dedicated pet owner who needs information about nutrition and the real facts about commercial pet food. Along with The Holistic Guide For A Healthy Dog, this is one of the best sources of information on nutrition and how it affects your pets health.I have a 6 year old Rott/Shepard mix who has hip dysplasia and is very overweight. The traditional vet I saw recommended Science Diet low calorie food to take the weight off, but when I read the ingredients(the FIRST ingredient is peanut shell hulls AND it contains BHT and ethoxyquin both known to cause serious health problems in dogs including cancer!!) I just couldn't subject my dog to the risk of new health problems just to get him to lose weight. I found a weight loss recipe in Dr. Pitcairns book which I make from scratch and the weight is coming off and my dog has never been healthier. Make sure you question methods your vet suggests, especially if it may compromise your dogs health and arm yourself with this book which will prove to be an invaluable source you will look to again and again.

I highly recommend this book. The information is invaluable and the subject is presented in easy-to-understand English (not filled with technical and medical jargon). Dr. Pitcairn covers just about every major aspect of your dog's/cat's general and nutritional health. I did not receive the impression that Pitcairn was advocating a complete switch to home-cooked foods versus manufactured kibble or you would put your dog at risk. Most of the animals he presents as case studies were elderly or chronically sick to begin with and had nothing to lose. He merely points out that nutrion is the foundation for good health and our dogs and cats are often being compromised in this due to the nutrional choices we make for them. I purchased this book mainly so I could enhance my own Cairn Terrier's super-premium kibble with tasty and nutritious additions that would further optimize her food. Let's face it, most premium foods opt for good nutrition over gourmet taste. I asked my vet but he had no recommendations. Dog and Cat owners should be careful. Very few vets today have any great understanding about the pet food industry because it is not covered during their studies. I was shocked to learn that the pet foods offered for sale in my vet's office were there because the manufacturer rents the space from him and places the products on the shelves. That is the reason this book is so important. The chapters on flea control, weight problems, and general topics like spay and neutering, and even the death of your animal were a truly pleasant surprise. Every dog or cat owner should have this book.

"The FBI: A comprehensive reference guide" is a great book for information on FBI history and organization. I learned a lot about how the FBI carries out its mission by reading this book. This is a terrific reference.

The FBI Comprehensive Reference Guide is a very good resource for background information on the FBI. I have never seen a better book on the history and workings of the agency. I would recommend it, along with "FBI Careers" (by Thomas Ackerman), to anyone who is seeking FBI employment.

This book covers the history and evolution of the FBI from 1908 to the present from an objective point of view. It has been well researched by these four scholars. The essays are well written and organized in ten chapters. Each chapter gives an in depth explanation of the origins of the FBI, its changes through the years, the relationship with other state and federal law enforcement agencies as well as its relationship with the President, Congress and the media. The reader not only learns about the history of the FBI, but also will learn about 20th century U.S. history. The chapters on Notable Cases and the FBI's influence on the American popular culture are very interesting. This book is very useful not only for the those who are interested in learn about the FBI but also for historians, sociologists, criminologists.
