weak plot, weaker characters
First off, let me say I enjoy most of Huxley's work. The style of this book is totally different from the usual Huxley method. I've never read anything else by Christopher Isherwood. This book starts out boring, and ends boring. That's really the sum of it. The characters are flat and extremely simple. In his early work (say, pre "Brave New World"), Huxley's characters are an embodiment of one single trait. However, they are always developed well, and their thought processes are complex while remaining within this one trait. This book has the same characterization - Jacob, for example, is moronically kind and simple (think Forrest Gump). There are also the classic evil tricksters, and so on. It's not done well at all, and I left this book with a bad taste in my mouth.

The insights of Huxley ...
Interesting how Hollywood types embrace such spiritual ideas without commiting to one chosen path. This work starts with an incredible insight into some of Jesus' words yet speaks to healing as a natural and mystical experience. I'd think the Creator would be more included in the reasoning.
Well worth reading. Many, many thanks to Sharon Stone for recognizing the beauty of this fable and giving it new life at this end of the century.

A touching fable on healing
This screenplay is the collaborative effort of Christopher Isherwood and Aldous Huxley. This work has an unpolished feel to it and may have been an unfinished work. However, the stark and unadorned quality of the work adds rather than detracts from its message.

It is a fable about a ranch hand, Jacob, who discovers that he can heal animals with his touch. The owner of the ranch is a widowed college professor with a physically handicapped adult daughter. The professor resents his daughter and wastes no effort in hiding his feelings. The daughter desperately wants freedom and independence. She asks Jacob to heal her.

The screenplay's uncomplicated message is that physical health alone does not make a person whole or happy. This work is unlike anything else by Huxley in its simplicity and ambiguous final paragraphs. It is a short work and is easily finished in one or two sittings.

use IBM's online reference
This book is not suitable for people who are completely new to DB2 and have never seen an os/390 before. It doesn't go deep with any of the subjects it discussed. It explains acronyms with more acronyms which confused me. You basically learn a little of everything that leads to nothing practical. I did not enjoy this book consider its price. Not to mention I do have knowledge of RDBMS. It's a waste of money.

Excellent!
This is a very good book that gives an overall picture of what to expect for the UDB 516 Examination. This book should be used as a guide and detailed study should be made from IBM Manuals.

Well organized and well written
I like this book very much. To me, at least from first pages and random pages, it looks well organized/structured and well written in simple but powerful English. It gives me great pleasure when I flip through the pages.

I have been trying since 10 am today to communicate with your office and this is the place I see where I can write. In your answer please provide me with a telephone number to which I can call and speak with someone directly in the future

Student`s review
Excellent book featuring:

* "picturesque" explaining (almost like a comic book), no clinical photography present though

* step by step instructions how to do it, with every material, bur or other used instrument explained in detail. Detail is what is great about this book - you can reconstruct every phase of the procedure to the last detail.

* fluidly written and easily understandable emphasizing the practice with all theoretical knowledge needed provided

Overall it is a great book for students which want to get a general knowledge about practice and theory of fixed prosthodontics in dentistry. Great beginners and advanced user book. (My mother who is a specialist of prosthodontic find it useful after years and years of practice). Only complaint - there were not any real clinical cases and clinical photography.

Recommended by Medical Library Association.

Like "The Flunking Of..." this is a horrible book.
The author of the "Joshua Bates" line does not exhibit much ability to write above the third grade level herself. It is a horrible book to expose young readers to, both for a poor story line and for terrible grammatical errors in the text. It is best avoided and has been removed from our curriculums allowed reading list.

No more bullies
Both of my children gobbled up this delightful 1993 sequel to The Flunking of Joshua T. Bates in the second or third grade. There's great appeal in the realistic characters and dialogue. They fell in love with Joshua.

Joshua was entering the fifth grade. As the school year opened, however, the class (and school) bully, Tommy Wilhelm announced plans for a new "Nerds Out" club. Still sensitive to his failure to make fourth grade on time, Joshua at first refused to stand up to the gang.

That made things worse for him. They put the whole school on the defensive, but Joshua got the brunt of their nastiness--until, that is, they decided to pick on a new kid in the class who had no friends and liked Joshua. Worse, Joshua's mother told him to be nice to the new boy.

The N.O.s plotted and planned and pulled a very nasty prank, which worried the entire class, and all the teachers. It was up to Joshua to set things straight. And this he did, managing to put the class bully and his clique in their place. How, I can't say.

Parents, take note. This book is "just right" for kids moving on from early chapter readers. It's challenging but not too hard, and the charmer story line keeps them turning the pages. Alyssa A. Lappen

Funny, sweet, moving
Another frustrated children's author must have written the last review, because this sequel to the sweet and hilarious The Flunking of Joshua T. Bates is every bit as wonderful as the first book. Susan Shreve is one of our best young adult writers.

Aaaack! This is horrible.
This books is not designed for developers. Information is presented as a high-level overview of Notes' and Domino's capabilities. The book is over 1100 pages long, but the first 400 should be scrapped. I'm looking for a reference that contains clear, detailed examples of code and development processes. I also want to know why (if) Domino is superior to standard web servers by Netscape, Apache, and Microsoft.

Updated version of Notes 4 guide - available in hardcover
A comprehensive guide to the new version of Lotus Notes (4.5). Full of lots of information, but I would have liked a little more guidance on steps to setup up the initial server. Definitely worth owning - especially seeing there is a CD ROM with the whole book in HTML format. The ultimate reference!

One of the best if not the best of the Notes 4.5 books.
The previous reviewer is correct that the previous published work did cover a lot of the Notes basics. However after you look at what is on the CD and the text you will see the value of this book. This book definitely has assisted me in developing many of the applications that I have written for my clients. The text is written so that you don't have to read a whole chapter in the book. You can read the sections that need. This is really a great reference book for building quality Notes applications

Not happy with any of the recipes
so far the breads using Canadian floors have been very unsucessful

Is it me, my bread machine or this book?
Maybe it's me, maybe it's my bread machine, or maybe it's this book, but I've yet to produce a bread that is good enough to repeat. Although I still haven't given up all hopes for the recipes in this book, I'm not impressed and I find myself using my other bread machine books first. Sometimes I couldn't be bothered to read through the stories, lengthy descriptions and repetitive instructions just to get to the actual recipe. I prefer simplicity and easy to read recipes, especially when I bake my breads first thing in the morning.

Best bread machine book I've used
I like this book so much that I'm ordering the third copy to give to friends and family. The recipes are much better than any in my machines book and all the ones I've tried have come out very well. I have tried many different types of bread from the book and all come out tasting as described and as I expected them to. I have made some loaves that I didn't like and will not repeat, but that was because I didn't care for the taste, not that the recipe didn't work as described.

I don't care so much about the looks of the loaf as the flavor, so don't feel that having a loaf that is not picture perfect is very important, I'm much more interested in the taste. Other facts in this book's favor are the simplicity of the directions and the variety of bread types given. If a difficult to find item is used in a recipe, he gives sources for it. Also is very good about identifying optional items right there in the recipe, not at the end after you've already added them and regretted it. Am in the process of ordering another copy to give a friend who just bought a machine.

subtility with a punch
The power of Plum and Jaggers is how long after reading it I was still thinking about the characters and their story. Sam, as the eldest of four who were orphaned when their parents were blown up on a train, has the burden of protecting his siblings - even when and where they didn't need protection. His resiliency has its price in that he is troubled, overbearing, yet incredibly strong. This is a story of family values with an edge. As in an earlier book, A Country of Strangers, Susan Shreve is able to constantly link comedy and tragedy in a subtle yet provocative manner. She goes deeply into the psychology of her characters with a light flair. A great "book club" book.

I couldn't put it down
I first stumbled across this novel in a review section of one magazine or the other. The review intrigued me enough to buy the book, and I was far from disappointed! I couldn't put Plum & Jaggers down. The characters fascinated me--especially Sam, whose mind we truly see into. I was a little put off at first by the predictable unpredictability (meaning the orphaned children, the oldest one of whom takes obsessive control), but the author answered back with twists and turns; my favorite was Sam's realization of the trite explosion at the close of the troupe's television show. Overall, a great read that stuck in my mind.

a moving novel of love and family
This is one of the best books about family I've read in a long time. The McWilliams siblings are wonderfully compelling characters, especially Sam, the oldest. Believing after losing his parents that only he can protect the family and keep it together, he becomes a playwright, pushing his brother and sisters to perform black comedy sketches about a family whose parents never show up for dinner. But the pressure he puts on them -- and the pressure of celebrity, once they start to become famous -- causes rifts between them, and forces Sam to reassess his own concept of family.

Despite its humor, this is at heart a serious allegory about the latchkey children of absent boomer parents, and about the power of the imagination to allow us to reshape our world. The writing is subtle but fast-paced, and the ending is powerfully moving. A great and memorable book.

Getting Better!
The latest edition of "Interchange" is certainly an improvement on the original. Teachers who have been using the old book for years will be relieved to see agonizing sections from the old book removed. And the subject material and sequencing of grammar, listening and speaking activities is better too. The workbook is also vastly superior to the old workbook . However, one of the major weaknesses of the old book still remains-the Teacher's Book. The lack of an abundance of really good speaking and grammar activities forces the teacher to do a large amount of preparation work. Here's a tip- supplement Interchange with Heinemann's "Reward Resource Books".

A good and useful series for ESL teacher.
Having never used the first edition of this series, I picked up New Interchange Level 1 so that I could have a structured series to help my students learn general basic English skills. I have been pleased, and find that overall it is a good series to teach from. THE GOOD: Each chapter in New Interchange has a good variety of skills to learn and practice. Students are constantly engaged in reading, writing, listening, speaking, learning new vocabulary and practicing new grammar rules. The content isn't too heavy, and the book makes good use of color and white space so as not to overwhelm the student. I find that the structure of each chapter is constant and reliable so that the students become used to how things are done. The tapes and Teacher's Guide are invaluable! The workbook provides additional practice of concepts that the students have just learned in the student book. All of these resources combine to make it incredibly easy for me (as a teacher) to prepare and give good lessons. THE BAD: I have found that my students are often confused with the grammar exercises. What may seem like clear-cut explanations to a native English speaker obviously aren't that clear to the learners. I am also a little saddened by the fact that each chapter really doesn't go into great depth for any one skill or theme. Each skill is presented, learned and practiced in what sometimes feels like a rushed manner. I have also found it difficult to present an entire chapter in two one-and-a-half hour sessions, as the authors suggest. OVERALL: A good series with lots of skills practice. It is very useful for learners who want to study a variety of general English skills. Very nice for overworked teachers who don't have a lot of time to prepare lessons.

Missing important details; basic business boilerplate
This book was a disappointment. I found it to have several chapters of vague generalities and typical small business boilerplate that I don't want to pay for.

It definitely does not give me the information I need to know to start a tour operator business. The most important example of it is it simply says nothing whatsoever about insurance and how to protect yourself from liability. That in itself should be an absolute condemnation of the book.

The only reason I didn't give it 1 star is it says a bit about how to guide a tour, which someone might find slightly useful, but overall, the book is not worth buying.

For Those Who Love to Travel and Make Money
This book gives an in-depth look at the tour guiding industry. The authors provide invaluable travel tips from behind the scenes. Included are checklists of travel items, examples, and an Appendix filled with useful travel organizations. Anyone who enjoys travelling and would like to make money doing it, should pick up this book.

Falls Short
Book gives a great over view and lays out a common sense approach to performance. Each chapter opens up talking a good game but then falls short of the expectations that it has set.

Book falls short by not covering the SQL Optimizer, how it works, or how to change the pre-bind parameters to influence it. Covers DB2 version 5-6 and mentions some things coming along in version 7. Book lists "Hints" but does not give definitions for each one nor the behavior that it should invoke.

Performance tools, techniques, scripts, screenshots are all from the mainframe environment. The event monitor GUI on the windows 200 interface tells you how code is actually behaving instead of the SETEXPLAIN which makes estimates and guesses. The book never mentions the event monitor tool. (I like books that cover different implimentations.)

Considering that this is the only performance book available for DB2, it's the best. I have an older Oracle performance book that most of my SQL Tuning/modeling techniques are based on. This DB2 book doesn't compare in depth or breadth.

If your new to DB2 or to Tuning, this book could help you out.
If you already know Tuning or another database, read the DB2 RedBooks at ibm.com, they're free.

DB2 High Performance Design and Tuning
This text has more insight than any other text I have read on tuning a mainframe DB2 system. The text sometimes seems disjointed, but in trying to cram all of the authors combined knowledge and experience into one text and trying to give it some order, is daunting. I would have to say this text rates a bit higher on the scale than DB2 Developer's Guide by Craig Mullins because it is not trying to cover all of the bases that Mr. Mullins is in his book. This is strictly for giving pointers on tuning DB2 in a mainframe OS/390 environment. I hope the authors combine their efforts and put out a true "DB2 for OS/390 Certification Guide" so we DB2 DBAs can train newcomers to the field. Their latest effort falls short of that.

Mr. Yevich tells all
Now that I have your attention -- I must confess I have not yet seen this book. But Richard Yevich has consulted my organization on a complex DB2 system, and I would say that his collaboration on this book should guarantee useful insights.

Note that this book will likely be only for an mainframe environment. For Unix or NT, I would go with a book on the DB2 UDB version.
