If your looking for a book that gives you lots of information about the NYPD Emergency Service Unit, then this is the book for you. I am a fan of the NYPD and have been looking for a book like this. NYPD is a fascinating, dramatic, high-speed ride-along with some of the best cops in the US. Katz must have spent a lot of time with the ESU team because he fills this book with the kind of personal information and adrenalin you'd get on the street, dealing with "perps." For my money, this book beats anything Ann Rule ever wrote -- much more exciting and intimate, rather than a dry narrative. If you like stories about real cops and real robbers, this one's for you.

This is a very interesting book about professional road cyclists in and around major races. It captures rising stars, athletes in their prime, and fading champions equally well. Venues and situations are clearly portrayed, and the short entries make the book a pleasure to read over a period of a couple of weeks (if you're on an indoor trainer or just plain busy, or both!). An inspiring read.

Not only are the stories in this book excellent, but I appreciated the author's introduction also, explaining the breakdown in three sections and the reasoning behind it. I was hooked immediately, and this author has a relationship with the riders that other journalists simply do not have, and therefore they cannot touch the vibrancy of the stories. Simply outstanding book.

If you want a short summary of what happened in the Old Testament, this is your book. ALhtough Delitzsch gets into hebrew, it is not necessary to know Hebrew, although it would help. Kiel and Delitzsch also have an excellent commentary of the Old Testament which is the standard volumes for Old Testament study. Read and enjoy.

This outstanding work demonstrates how the Old Testament is, from beginning to end, essentially about Christ. Prof. Delitzsch provides insight into the Old Testament prophetic and typological references to Christ in a way that is both thought provoking and inspirational. Some Latin and Hebrew, but not enough to take away from the meanining of the text (I have not studied either language). The book's short chapters make it ideal for a devotional/study guide. It is not light reading, but is well worth the extra effort.

I find this book the definitive source of information about the personal views of Olivier Messiaen. Claude Samuel seems to be well aquainted with Messiaens music and poses interesting and thought-provoking questions to the maestro. The book contains passages about bird-song and greek poetry wich are quite fascinating for a layman. Also quite curious are some of Messiaens personal opinions on some of the most important composers in history. There is enough facts about Messiaens music to satisfy even those who are allready familiar with his works. The book is written in an understandable manner, yet deep enough for musicians and scholars to get a lot out of it.

This book is the definitive source of information about Messiaens personal views and opinions. Claude Samuel, the interwiever, is apparently quite familiar with Messiaens works and sets intelligent and thought-provoking questions to the maestro. Messiaen talks about his compositional techniques in an understandable manner, yet deep enough to satisfy the need of professional musicians as well. Delightful information is also given about Messiaens pupils and peers: Boulez, Xenakis and Stockhausen. Also somewhat surprising are his (often quite cruel) personal opinions about some composers who normally are considered to be some of the most influential in history. Also for a non-ornithologer there is a fascinating passage about bird-song and its influence and application to Messiaens music. I deeply recommend this book to everyone even remotely interested in one of the most important musical figures of the 20th century.

In her book Phyllis Eisenstein says she first read about pantothenic acid in Adelle Davis's book "Let's Get Well." I read Adelle Davis's book over 10 years ago and tried the pantothenic acid (500 mg. twice a day) with food and it absolutely works for me. It took about a month for me, but the pain and swelling in my hands miraculously subsided. I've realized that I'll have to take this the rest of my life because when I quit taking it the pain, swelling and burning of my hands and joints returns.

This is an excellent book for anyone who is suffering from arthritis. I personally know from relatives who suffer from arthritis that the alternative treatments in this book actually work! And I am not a fan of alternative medicine.

Humor has moved to tv/movies. There are very few really funny writers around. Robertson Davies is a gem, all the rarer for being in such sparse company. This book has at least two or three laughs per page. It is a compendium of miscelleanous writing by one Samuel Marchbanks (Davies' alter ego) who keeps diaries and writes columns. I find myself giggling on my way to work on the subway as I race through these short aphoristic pieces. Highly recommend for any scrooges who refer to babies in terms appropriate for judging a ham and can stand dogs only in newspaper reports about their valorous deeds.

Samuel Marchbanks is a grouchy old newspaperman who struggles with his coal furnace, garden, and neighbours in an attempt to live life as he feels is proper. He is witty, open-minded, well-read, and likes to shock his acquaintances.

The Diary is a record of his day-to-day life over a year, with several amusing plot-lines running through it. The Table Talk is just that--a collection of Marchbanks' favourite prandial conversations (or monologues as the case may be). The Miscellanea are letters and various papers, as well as an interview of Marchbanks by Davies.

This is an extremely funny collection of fiction. Although knowledge of early twentieth-century Canadian life helps, it's not necessary.

Better than Huckelberry Finn, or Tom Sawyer. Several short stories, that should be required reading in every school! "The War Prayer" is outstanding. This book shows a side of Twain, that is not mentioned in most school classes. Because it is not politically correct, and never was, it was nearly banned on at least one occasion. This is the main reason that it is hard to locate, and why few people have heard of it. A Must REad!

of this book I have only read "The War Prayer," and it is one of the finest works of art that I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. It is truly something that every intellectual should read.

This study of the way Jews study sacred texts is actually exciting. Amazing how Heilman has made what might seem to many a boring exercise in the review of musty Talmud books into true drama. Should be read along with his Gate Behind the Wall, which describes the personal side of this academic study

Jews have made outstanding contributions to anthropology, but rarely have they taken a close ethnographical look at aspects of their own communal experiences. This is what author Heilman sets out to do, with stunning results. He investigates the world of the Talmudic study group, devoting four separate chapters to the kinds of drama enacted by this group, which he styles: social drama, cultural performance, interactional drama, and speech play. Two additional chapters discuss the function of the study group as "an experience of fellowship and community" and as an "act of homage". Altogether, an innovative, original work.

I've never encountered such an amazing collection of wisdom. Each sentence has a delicate balance of intellectual clarity and heartfelt insight. It's hard to find any instance in my life that isn't addressed within the covers of this book. A real treasure!

Perspectives provides excerpts from Paul Brunton's 7,000 pages of notebooks, giving the fruits of his mature thinking. You will find guidance to spirituality, health, metaphysics, yoga, and insights into quieter, more meaningful living. Don't plan to read the book all at once. It's best digested a few pages at a time, so that you can think and ponder the words you've read.

In some senses I like this better than No Place Like Home, because it was not quite so cluttered with so many characters, and the narrative was in the third person. Both were excellent. In this novel we don't quite have the narrator's quirky sense of humour to cope with the terrible times in life, but in a lot of respects it is more upbeat. I love Luna and Thomas; they are a terrific couple, really HOT and Taos New Mexico is really brought to life. Her daughter is a wonderful character too and also the secondary characters Tiny and Maggie.

It is not a perfect book, but it is really excellent. I read it in one sitting, just like her first. This one will not make you cry gallons, though. It is much more upbeat. The use of Maggie the teen's diary is I think the only weak part in the book, since I really wanted more of a smoochy scene with Luna and Thomas at the end of the novel. But then I am an avid romance reader. One other minor flaw is the start of the book really lurched a bit and could have benefitted from a much better editor who could pick up the niggling little errors like what time the daughter's flight landed.

This book is an excellent cross over thought for women who like good fiction, and anyone looking for a book which affirms the healing power of love and the fact that god really does work in mysterious ways. All I can say is, I can't wait for her next one!

Luna McGraw lost custody of her daughter when her husband took her to court with proof that she was an unfit mother because of her drinking. After four years of out of control alcoholic bingeing, she hit rock bottom and finally entered rehab. Now she is four years sober and her ex-husband has transferred custody of their daughter Joy to her. Luna looks on this as a second chance to be the mother that her daughter needs but she is scared that she will fail her.

Thomas Coyote is a two-time loser in the divorce wars. His second wife cheated on him with his brother after they learned Thomas is sterile; now she is pregnant and married to his sibling. The last thing he wants to do is fall in love for the third time but when he meets Luna, the attraction is electrifying. Luna feels the same way but she is fighting it because she fears rejection from her daughter as much as from Thomas.

A PIECE OF HEAVEN is a beautiful love story starring two scarred individuals who still have issues from previous relationships they have to resolve before they can think of coming together. The likable characters are realistically drawn, especially Joy who is wise beyond her years. Barbara Samuel has written a relationship drama that will appeal to fans of Kristin Hannah and Barbara Delinsky.
