Thorough discussion on religion
GURPS Religion provides a thorough (almost too thorough!) framework for roleplayers to create religions for their campaigns. Although it is very complete, it needs to have more direction for the novice campaign creator. I felt lost trying to determine the best place to start. I still recommend it for game masters creating campaigns.

Useful for more than just campaign design
This book is the one that convinced me that SJGames had things really, thoroughly on the ball. Like most of their other sourcebooks, this book is the product of thorougly researching a subject and distilling out the information which is needed to write immersive scenarios and stories in that context.

The GURPS Religion book takes this task seriously enough that it is usable not just as a role-playing supplement but more generally as a handbook of comparative religion for storytellers. It has everything from roles of clergy to creation myths to the meaning of religious symbols, told from the perspective of how religions perceive themselves.

The one caveat is that this book will not walk you through the process of designing a religion for a campaign. While the chapters are essentially a checklist for any religion's design, each chapter contains a large reservoir of ideas rather than a step-by-step instruction list. For the experienced GM who wants a steady fount of inspiration, or for anyone who wants a good introduction to the varieties of religious symbolism, this book is a valuable tool.

Definitely one of the most useful items on my GM's workbench.

Levitation: What It Is-How It Works-How to Do It (Paths to Inner Power)

Author: Steve Richards
Amazon base price: $9.00

Uses many authentic references, solid study of how to do it.
Extreamly interesting book contained with actual occurances of levitation and history of demonstrations. This book explains what levitation is, a study of it, and then preaches to you about how to do it and other occult powers. Only someone who is serious about levitation or wants to have an superb study on it should consider this book.

Awsome!!!
Having read all of Steve Richards books, I can honestly tell you that this is his best one. Not only does it delve skillfully into the history and background of this art(which pretty much any good researcher could do he also goes on to explain EXACTLY HOW TO DO IT!!! Never, ever have I read an occult that is this direct and without any decoration. This is pure knowledge. After he clues you in on how to levitate he also expands on other great powers such as infinite strength, knowledge, and sight. Amazingly anything you can think of. I won't tell you all about it because you should really go out and look for a copy yourself. Even though none of his books are in print any longer I have managed to obtain all of them from various used book stores. After this book you will never need or want another occult book. This and Invisibility are a must have for any occult follower. This is not magic, it's completely somthing else. If anyone reads this has any questions or knows how I can get in touch with Steve Richards, the author feel free to email me. ENJOY IT!!!

The Willamette Locomotive
Published in Hardcover by Oso Publishing Company (1997)
Authors: Steve Hauff and Jim Gertz
Amazon base price: $39.95
Collectible price: $63.53
Average review score:

A fascinating volume.
"The Willamette Locomotive" is a fascinating story of a compact but mighty large-gear locomotive.

Steve Hauff and Jim Gertz do a workmanlike job of examining how, in the early 1920s, Oregon's Willamette Iron and Steel Works produced over 30 of these power-horses to specifically meet the formidable demands of Northwest loggers.

Unlike other trains of their day, the Willamettes were able to perform despite rough tracks, unbelivable grades, and little maintenance.

There are over 250 b&w photos, and many of them are sharp and detailed.

The best and only book on the Willamette geared locomotive
The Willamettes were the only geared locomotives produced in the Northwest and designed specifically for Northwest logging. This book gives an excellant history of the development of the Willamette steam locomotives. The historical photos are outstanding as are the carefully researched history of each of the 36 locomotives produced. This is a "must have" book for the serious logging fan or for the casual student of logging and lumbering as it was in the first half of the century. For the modeler, this book, it's photos, and drawings would provide an outstanding starting place for scratchbuilding one of these rare machines.

The Power of Simplicity
Published in Digital by McGraw-Hill ()
Authors: Jack Trout and Steve Rivkin
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Not much on "how-to", but thought-provoking nonetheless.
I have been a fan of Trout (and Ries) for many years, and I am a firm believer in their take on marketing and positioning. This new book is very good at making you re-think your own organization and how things are done. The information explosion has uselessly added too much complexity, and led people to use consultants rather than their own brain power for many things. A thought-provoking book that can be read in a couple of hours, it contains a strong mandate for the need (if not the "how") to simplify the processes we all pursue in business. I will be buying copies for all my managers.

A must-read for anyone in Marketing or Advertising
Jack Trout has always been the master of seeing the forest for the trees. The Power of Simplicity is his latest breath of fresh air to help clear the mind and get marketers thinking straight again. Everyone always talks aobut how difficult it is to "cut through the media clutter" of mass marketing today. But to find a strategy that accomplishes that, you first have to cut through the clutter of jargon, fad-theories and self-proclaimed guru's that litter the marketing landscape. The Power of Simplicity is the self-help book for anyone who wants to come out on top in today's marketing wars. And the best part is, following Jack's advice is so incredibly simple.

Elliot Firestone, Creative Director, Fricks/Firestone Advertising

down to earth talking... defenitely a must.
This is the latest book by Jack Trout, from the POSITIONING and MARKETING WARFARE fame (with AL RIES, who later wrote FOCUS and The 22 Law of immutable marketing).

Find this book in the BORDER Singapore, and it is a VERY GOOD READ. It is very easy to digest and trying to remove all the latest fad of management fuzzy thinking,

This put the main essense of management to the real thing and removing all the unnecessary -noise-. good for the non-sophisticated reader (like me ;))).

It cover usual range of management issue, from marketing, pricing to leadership, growth etc...

It keep things simple, something correct.

Where's the Proof?
I taught classroom NLP for years, and I'm offended by this so-called self-help book. NLP is found by John Grinder, and in its purest form has been misused and misrepresented. Everybody claims to practice NLP as a result of Tony Robbins. This book should have focused more on the real NLP techniques. See Tony's Unlimited Power. It's much better.

A practical book of NLP techniques
If I am being selfish like my past, I would not have written this review to let you know that this is such a great book for personal change. I changed instantly after following a couple of the exercises explained in the book. After going through the exercise of "Fast Phobia Method" and "Recoding Past Unpleasant Experiences", it helped me to regain much of my self-confidence back, which was results of an unpleasant past. The book would not be an easy read for non-NLPers, but the authors did try very hard to explain the "how's" and "why's" of the exercises introduced in the book. More importantly, they picked those essential NLP techniques for life change, which makes the book invaluable. Although this is an NLP book from the eighties, IMHO, it sheds more lights than many of the more contemporary ones. I fully recommend this book if you want to use NLP to improve yourself. My advice is to work through those exercises that fit you and reflect on the resulted changes.

Better than Talk Therapy
I've been facinated with NLP for years. I tried reading and learning about it from R. Bandlier's books, but found them too complicated for me at this level. Heart of the Mind was exactly what I needed. It gives practical, easy to follow instructions that I can try on myself. It has 'encouraged' me to find an NLP practicioner to work with to help me with some of the techniques.

The FAST Track to Healthy Living
Poisons sting twice: once on the way in and again on the way out.

Expect to experience the toxins leaving your body in the form of headaches, light-headedness and fever.

A one-day fast hardly interrupts your schedule, but it give's the body's organs a moment of peace in a hectic world to remove toxins and NOT be busy with the work of digestion. A one-day-per-week fast gives your body 50 days out of the year to cleanse and heal.

Meyerowitz believes that fasting is the fastest way to restore your health. He goes into detail on short fasting and what it takes to safely experience long fasts of more than two weeks. Give your cells and yourselves the opportunity to cleanse, nourish, rejuvenate and heal.

(1) Increase Energy and Improve Mental Alertness (2) Heal Chronic Ailments without Drugs (3) Lose Weight without the Hassle of Diets (4) Maintain Stamina without Hunger (5) Fast at Home or at Work --- Perfect for a Busy Lifestyle (6) Make Quick and Delicious Juice Recipes

How Long to Fast According to Meyerowitz, the duration of a fast depends on:

(1) Fasting Experience (2) Physical Strength and Condition (3) Nature of ailment if Any (4) Previous diet (5) Mental Attitude (6)Level of Toxicity (7) Schedule of Work and Activities (7)Environment and Weather (8) Age

Chemically speaking, a long fast is divided into three stages, which Meyerowitz describes in some detail. The first few days is primarily devoted to body reorientation, as your system starts to change the pH of your stomach. During the second phase, the liver starts to purge itself of its chemical and toxic load. The third phase involves deep tissue cleansing.

Drinking only water is what most people think of when fasting is mentioned. Rest and inactivity is very important during a long water fast. Choose clean fresh air in a relaxing environment for this kind of fast. There are good suggestions and guidelines in this chapter for both water and juice fasting.

Juice Fasting is an ideal way for first timers to start. The juice supplies nutrients and calories and thus protects you if you must continue to work during the fast. This chapter contains valuable information on the various fruit and vegetable juices, including Weatgrass --- The Queen of Juices.

Remember your water must be pure! Whether filtered water that contains all the minerals or distilled water that many describe as dead water ---- do not drink water from your tap without removing the chemicals from it.

Coming off the Fast According to our author, fasting is easy --- but the transition back to eating is what is hard. He has suggestions for your transition from a long fast and which foods are good to start eating first. Knowing when to stop is discussed as is the phases in the road back. Break fasts with soft, high water content foods like juicy fruits, light soups, etc. Watermelon is a good choice.

This is the second book that I purchased by Steve Meyerowitz. I was so impressed with "Power Juices Super Drinks", that I had to order "Juice Fasting & Detoxification". At 137 pages, this is not a very big book. But I highly recommend it if you are considering fasting as a part of your lifestyle. Each page is full of valuable information. It is a reference guide.

Steve Meyerowitz Background In the mid-1970's. Steve Meyerowitz was nicknamed "Sproutman" ...He found no help for his allergies and asthma via traditional methods and turned to a vegetarian and fruitarian diet. He lives in the city yet grows much of his own food.

The Particulars of Fasting
This book is both informative, and an easy, pleasant read. In sharp contrast to several other books I've read, Meyerowitz doesn't force feed raw food diets or fasting down your throat with threats of disease and disaster. His approach is simple, direct and well-organized. The book begins with a discussion of what fasting is and why it can be beneficial and continues on to descriptions of how to begin, how long to continue and how to come off a fast. Other important sections include a systematic description of how the body detoxifies, what to expect as this occurs and what can be done to help the body during the cleansing process. All in all I found this to be a well-balanced and informative book that I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who is new to the concept of water or juice fasting.

A must-read for juice fasters
This book was a great intro in to juice fasting. It was very informative and easy to read. The author has a real passion for juice fasting.

BEST GRAPPLING BOOK EVER WRITTEN
THIS BOOK BY FAR IS INCREDIBLE. GENE LEBELL THROWS ALOT OF HUMOR INTO THIS BOOK AND SOME RATHER FUNNY LOOKING HUMOROUS TECHNIQUES TO TAKE UP SPACE BUT HE DOES INCLUDE A BIZARRE AMOUNT OF HOLDS IN THIS BOOK. FROM BASICS LIKE HOW TO GRAB TO LEG LOCKS(AWESOME SECTION BY THE WAY) TO EVEN SOME PRO WRESTLING HOLDS YOU'D SEE ON MONDAY NIGHT. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE AND EVERYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN GRAPPLING. THE FORMAT IS VERY EASY TO LEARN AND HE SHOWS SEVERAL TECHNIQUES IN VARIOUS ANGLES AND VARIATIONS. ITS OFF THE HOOK!

Humor, Fighting, and 500+ Pages of Information!
Gene LeBell makes learning fun with his humerous approach to grappling in all its forms. This volume includes techniques commonly found in Judo, wrestling, and a host of other martial arts from Asia to South America. Author LeBell commences with grips and handles, with gi (jacket) and without-after all the base of grappling is holding on to something (anything!). He moves on to slap and catch, and then a huge array of arm locks, shoulder locks, writst, hip, leg locks, chokes, strangles, cranks, counters against a boxer, and LeBell's own wide range of special tricks, many which are not commonly found anywhere else. This volume contains a wealth of information, probably easiest to assimilate for someone who already has a background in wrestling, judo, BJJ or some other art with a lot of ground practice--I had no trouble understanding most of the techniques illustrated within. You won't find much on judo-like throws here, but then this book isn't geared towards that. There are plenty of other ways to get your opponent to the ground illustrated in this tome.

This is a big, heavy book--a work this complete has never been undertaken before to my knowledge (with the possible exception of the "Fighter's Notebook"). There are many practical techniques, many "forgotten" techniques, and everything from the practical to the incredibly difficult in here. For the conoisseur of grappling or martial arts in general, you will enjoy yourself!

This Book Is Gene LeBell's Legacy to the Grappling World
LeBell was probably born wearing a pair of wrestling tights and boots. He was the national AAU Judo Champion in 1954 and 1955. Gene won both the heavyweight and openweight divisions at a bodyweight of 160 pounds. Gene LeBell became a professional wrestler in 1955 and won the NWA World's Heavyweight title. Judo Gene is one of the greatest submission grapplers in the world today. He is a master of over 1,000 holds in the art of submission grappling. All of the holds that Gene knows were proven and tested on the mats, arenas and in the streets around the world. LeBell's legacy to the grappling world is in this encyclopedia. This book has over a thousand submission grappling techniques. LeBell is no ordinary mortal when it comes to grappling and fighting. I am certain that he is related in some way to the ancient Greek gods of antiquity. Probably Hercules was his Godfather and the mighty Milo of Croton - the greatest wrestler who ever lived - was his grappling mentor. For those of you who do not have the book -- buy it, it will be the best investment you will ever make and keep in mind that it is the best book on finishing holds that has ever been published. I have seen many other books on submission grappling from all over the world and none can compare with this book. Years ago I searched high and low for such a book but always came up empty handed. Submission grappling techniques have always been guarded jealously by the grapplers of the world. The art of finishing holds is a secretive and esoteric art. Judo Gene LeBell has revealed to the grappling world many of these secret and esoteric holds. LeBell is the first one to do so. Many professional wrestlers were angry with Gene for doing so, but Gene wants to share his knowledge with all the martial artists and grapplers of good will. This manual has an enormous amount of information, knowledge and techniques that one can learn from. If you own such a book then no other grappling book is necessary to buy. It is the whole nine yards. Gene once told me that if you can learn one good technique from a book then it is worth the purchase price. If that is so, then this book is equal to a hundred books (assuming you learn only 10% of the techniques it contains).

Where's the beef?
Considering the fact that the world's busiest and best bomb squads were never even mentioned or covered in this book (New York, Israel Police, British Army Northern Ireland, Spanish EOD squads, French Police demolitions units, and German bomb techs), this coverage is missing the "big bang!"

Bomb Squads
If you want to enter the the world of bomb disposal from the technician's point of view, then this book is for you. Although due to security matters, most things have been ommitted, it's still a very good read, into the tallents of the guys who help save people's lives when bombs are involved. Get it now, or miss out.

GREAT overview
This book is a wonderful initial look into Explosive Ordnance Disposal or Public Safety Bomb Technician work. I would highly recommend this book for a younger reader, or a person who could appreciate the photography, some of which aren't found anywhere else.
This book would also be good for media or executive - types who need a basic working knowledge of what goes on, but not at a technical operations level. This book is basically a VIP tour of a typical Hazardous Devices Unit. Mr. Tomajczyk REALLY did his homework.

Yeahhh!! Karl Marx!
The author forgets to mention that if anyone DOESN'T want to share, they go to jail.

I love people and their little theiving violent tendencies who try and dress up their need for blood. The battle continue!

Informative, invaluable
Perhaps you've heard part of the story elsewhere; perhaps you're approaching it for the first time. Either way, STP is relatively brief but comprehensive picture of the ugly trends of the past 20 years in U.S. politics and economics. Loaded with compelling research and figures, it also has good notes with references to many other sources. But most importantly it's fairly accesible to the average reader, the non-specialist who needs these facts most.

An excellent book on the maldistribution of wealth...
This is a straightforward, easy to read book about how the distribution of wealth (and, therefore power) has been unbalanced in the past century and continues to get worse. This book is a great read and highly recommended--many facts are supported with complete references. If nothing else, this book serves as an eye-opener and a starting point for anyone interested in the problems (and causes) of wealth and poverty in the United States

Power Plays: Shakespeare's Lessons in Leadership and Management

Bla, bla, bla
This book is great for people just looking for some impressiv Shakespeare phrases to spice up their speeches. The book is full of common sense and does not provide any in-depth analysis of the characters. Beside that the endless desriptions of how the authors succeed in their businesses (good for them!) is boring and do not provide concrete ideas or strategies.

PROBABLY THE BEST IF YOU ENJOY SHAKESPEARE
John O. Whitney managed to relate business strategies to many of Shakespeare's plays; I truly was impressed... Many of his own experiences are related and it might seem as if the author is showing off but the stories he talks about are really interesting.
Before I read this book I really respected and admired Shakespeare and now my admiration goes beyond his literature, with the help of the author, his lessons on leadership and management are essential for any person working in a large corporation.
SHAKESPEARE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A CEO!!!

Highly Recommended!
O.K., we all know it's a gimmick, but it's such a good gimmick that you can't help but be won over. John O. Whitney and Tina Packer extract timeless truths about human nature from the works of Shakespeare and apply them to today's business world. Theme by theme, the authors tackle power, communication, trust, decision, action, hierarchy and women in management. Linking business dramas and dilemmas faced by today's companies and corporate leaders to those faced by Shakespeare's characters, the authors serve up a treasure trove of valuable insight and guidance in this immensely satisfying book. We [...] recommend this book to anyone in business or outside of it. Because like the works of Shakespeare himself, this book, while aimed at a specific audience, aspires to, and in many cases reaches, more universal truths.
