Buyer be warned!
This book relates to a thoroughly outdated version of KDE, 1.1. Version 2 is a different world in many respects. Be sure that you're using an archaic version of KDE before you spend money on this book. Otherwise the book might have some kind of historical value I guess. Advice to the author: it's very easy to overuse the word "breathtakingly" when you're writing about software.

Practical and humorous
If you are new to the K Desktop Environment for Unix, this book is an invaluable reference for learning your way around the desktop, customizing the way things look and using the applications that come with it. It also encourages you to get down and dirty with Linux, giving instructions on where to find the latest distributions and cool applications and how to compile and use them. Mr. Powell writes with a dry and sometimes cynical wit, which makes for enjoyable reading.

Practical KDE
Great book for Linux newbies (Ah-hem! - I guess that's ME!) but seems to have enough info for anyone getting up and running with the "K" desktop environment, as well as plenty of tips for the more sopisticated "K" user as well. Mr. Powell's work is such a joy to read, and his sense of humor makes this "getting adquainted" '(ad)venture' with the KDE gui so much more palpable ... a far cry from most modern so-called "introductory" (read: novice) computer manuals....this one has the info without being overly-simplistic.... 5 stars.

Dialogues on Reality: An Exploration into the Nature of Our Ultimate Identity: Meetings in California (Verbatim Report)

Not one of the better works
I'm glad this isn't the only Nisargadatta book I've looked at because It might have been the last. In this book of Q/A sessions it's not hard to tell he has grown weary of the questions. He seems to have been ill during much of the time that this book transpired and mentions several times he is tired of physical existence and wants to go. he even goes as far as to tell a few seekers to give up and persue some type of social work. Not at all the exciting and profound work of "I am That" which looks to rival most of Maharshi's teaching.

Who experiences nothingness?
Nothingness is only known within the context of somethingness. Therefore there cannot be an "experience" of nothingness, if so it is no longer nothing. One does not ever realize the infinite. When the realizer is destroyed the infinite Is. But it is no longer infinite. Nor does it fail to be infinite. Infinity is only known withing the context of the finite. I feel the author didn't stress the Paradox of non-dualiam enough. He instead took the classic "identify with consciousnesss" approach. This is ok and fine because if one points out the impossibility of non-dualism in ones speech they'll sound like me!

Thought-provoking perspectives on our ultimate reality
Although Robert Powell is the main speaker throughout the book, the questioners provide their own spiritual experiences along with thought-provoking questions. Powell is excellent at bringing back wandering questioners to the main topic of the discussion. Because the nature of the mind is chaotic, these off-topic adventures happen frequently, but many times the direction of the wandering is as enlightening as the overall topic--"our ultimate reality". The weak point for me was that Powell was not as effective as Nisargadatta Maharaj at bringing the reader to his own spiritual experience. Maharaj gives brilliant in-depth descriptions of his state of no-self.

Pass this one up!
I have been in software development for the past 20 years, from IBM mainframe to client/server environments. I needed to "get in" on the new technology. I created the development environment I thought was needed to make the most of this book. It carried me, step-by-step, through development methodology in client/server development. However, the web applicaton development portion of the book is sorely lacking in usable information. I found the guidance somewhat lacking in understandable instruction concerning development for web applications. The downloaded program listing doesn't compile correctly, because of a lack of a class. The class is developed in the book, but there are no instructions on how to incorporate the class. Also, SQL Server is used as a database, but no reference is made to it as necessary to create and run the listings in the book.

Absolutely Unique Data Layer Examples
I have most of the better selling C# books on the market. That gives me a unique perspective. Among all of the books dealing with ADO.NET / C# data access, this one stands alone in showing the reader how to construct a Domain Object Model to hold data, and moreover how to use some of NET's more advances features like Reflection and Attributes to assist in the creation of this code. To me, the chapter outlining this process was worth the price of the book alone. Like I said, it is absolutely unique. Most writers, perhaps because of a lack of in-depth understanding, just rehash the ADO.NET Dataset concept. But you can do so much more with NET that anyone concerned with building a proper DAL would do themselves a dissservice if they skipped over "C# and the NET Framework".

A Decent Introduction
This book is a good introduction to c# and .net. Unlike some c# books totally devoted to sytax, which is not a problem for c++/java programers, this one covers a lot of areas in .net applications using c#, such as windows form, web form and web service. But the book does not provide a deep insignt into .net. As some viewer said, "basic introduction...but enough to give the reader a taste".

The topic, "The C++ Perspective", in my opinion, doesn't make much sense. There are some minor errors in the book, but to correct them is not a problem.

To sum up, if you want to know a little more than tutorials, try this one; if you want to dig into .net framework, maybe Jeffrey's Applied MS .NET Framework Programming or some il books.

The Breaker

Wonderfully developed mystery..........
This story, while dealing with a dead woman who washes up on an English cove keeps you in complete suspense until the very end. Who would have wanted her dead and why? The list of suspects is long and the reasons are varied. Her husband, her mother-in-law, a young actor with a penchant for sex and pornography, a cannabis smoking school teacher obsessed with the actor, or is it someone else altogether. The clues mount up against everyone and the motives for her murder do too. It takes a calm and careful investigator to sort out all the details and PC Nick Ingram is the perfect man for the job. While there were parts of the story that were a bit too explicit for some the story fits together wonderfully, and along the way PC Ingram manages to renew a friendship with a woman whose life was turned upside down by a prior investigation. I will definitely read more Minette Walters books.

She's a wonderful writer; the mystery is fair.
I agree with most of the previous reviewers that the mystery wasn't too difficult to figure out. I think the present book, "The Breaker," is a wonderful read if you like good writing, but the mystery is a bit stilted. However, I think Minette Walters is a gifted writer. Her characters (both major and minor) jump off the page and the dialogue is believable. In all of her books, she's great at developing her characters. I particularly like the fact that all of them are flawed, even the protagonists. What's really good: She has no reoccurring characters through her books. They're all new and different - a new cast of characters to discover and enjoy.

my favorite of walter's books, so far....
i have now read all of minette walter's books that i could get my hands on, and this was definitely my favorite. everytime you think you know who did it, something changes your mind. i also enjoyed how the different characters evolved throughout the novel. this one (like her others) i couldn't put down til i got to the end. i can't wait til she comes out with another book! one of my favorite things about her books is the way she writes statements in different typefaces, so you always differentiate who is narrating. another is that she always has a map at the front, which i tend to refer back to, just to keep a more accurate track of what's going on. i highly recommend this book.

Disappointing book on Zen
Dreary style makes for bad reading. There are other better titles on the same subject(s). I can't help thinking Powell comes across as pompous sometimes.

excellent
We see in your list that Robert Powell narrates many of your books. It is imperative for us to contact him to invite him to a celebration in Jerusalem. Please advise us how to contact him. Thanks

Academic PC Non-Sense
Did we really need another revisionist history written with the sole purpose of showing that everything European and "Colonial" is bad and all native peoples are good, virtuous, etc., etc?

Given the current standards for degree granting(that work must break new ground to be worth an advanced degree)the academic community has been gleefully re-writing history for years to fit their fantasy scenarios and strange political/ social theories.

It is a pity that these authors could not be using their academic skills for something better than pandering to the new political and social powers of South Africa, and to the PC pirates and thought control police of the rest of the world.
