More about Thoreau than one might want to know
There are biographies of Henry David Thoreau, and there are literary criticisms about Walden and his other works. _Young Man Thoreau_ is closer to the former than the latter. It's a psychological analysis of his early pre-Walden life based on his own writings, records of his life, and remarks made by his contemporaries. Those insights are juxtaposed against Freud's theories and Erik Erikson's life-cycle model of human behavior. And the verdict is that Thoreau experienced a prolonged adolescence with a psychosocial moratorium that delayed the burden of adult responsibilities. His eternal search for a "great man" can be traced to his own family situation, which featured a weak father figure and a domineering mother, so of course the author brings Oedipus into the picture. Further discussion is held about the triangular relationship between Henry, his brother John, and their friend Ellen Sewall, who turned down both brothers' offers of marriage. Henry's reactions to his own accidental fire-setting to the Concord woods and the early death of his brother are also put under the figurative microscope. The result is probably as accurate an examination as we can get, given that the actual man is not here to defend himself or confirm the diagnosis.
And yet the fact remains that he *is* not present. So how can we tell if this analysis, though well researched, is the truth? If you have your own comfortable ideas about Henry David Thoreau, you probably would do well to steer clear of this book. Or read it with a discerning eye, knowing that you'll be shaking your head at some of the suppositions offered. Interesting but not essential.

His class isn't all that either
I have read the book and taken the class at George Mason University where he teaches and boy are there a lot of mistakes in the book. He should publish another book (the errata). If you are considering taking this class don't.
I Just Don't Understand Why We Use This Book
So far, my impression of this book is this. First, it's not very well written, and is often hard to understand. Concepts are not very well elaborated on. I'm having to go on the net to get better explanations... Second, I wish they would use more pictures for certain concepts, definately not a book for a visual learner. Honestly, I don't know why we are required to use this book for class, but I guess if I must, I'll use it. Professors should read this rating thing before they get these books... Hope this helps.

for the competitor in all of us, this book calls out.
nevertheless, there was tons of wooden gunk in between the good stuff, tons of dull and essentially meaningless essays about theory and practice, etc, and that was worth skipping over or skimming... you decide.
and last but not at all least: that guy Framo was a big jerk. he so obviously bulled the woman in the couple into "opening up" and becoming vulnerable in front of her family, which is exactly what she didn't want to do (good instinct on her part), and he kept promising her he'd support her, which is exactly what he! DIDN'T DO! he was exceedingly manipulative with her, and that had to be the most manipulative transcript of a therapy session i'd ever read. i mean, this guy's a master, and he totally disguises his own motives. also, he completely protected the parents at the expense of the daughter (though he was slippery enough about it to not make it look so), and ultimately, i believe, acted not at all in her best interest, and may have damaged her worse than she knew. and on top of all that, he did it in such a slimy way that she THANKED HIM PROFUSELY FOR IT AFTERWARDS!!! it was only six YEARS later that she realized...just a little bit...how far he'd gone in manipulating her...but she was still thanking him. he messed with her head in a big way.
and by the way, the editors of the book "just play neutral" when it comes to Framo's behavior. this is sick stuff. but you read it and decide.
