writing from the inside out
In returning to favorite quotations I choose those passages in which the authors express personal experiences of grace. Having the courage to write from the inside out reveals an authenticity which the selections that are intended to alter another's behavior do not. The last entry in the book, one of several included elsewhere by Meister Eckhart demonstrates this beautifully. "The eye in which I see God is the same eye in which God sees me. My eye and God's eye are one eye and one seeing, one knowing and one loving." In like manner the champion of little graces, Brother Lawrence confesses, "I turn over my little omelet in the frying pan for the love of God. When it is done, if I have nothing to do, I bow down to the ground and adore God from whom has come the grace to make it." Petru Dumitriu, in the chapter The Sacrament of Presence admits, "My own humble experience is not that of ecstacy. I do not levitate, I am not somewhere else, nor outside myself, not with God-nothing of that. Just a poor brute suddenly stopping halfway down the stairs, or slowly taking off his glasses. But those two or three minutes in the life of a man, are the reason why I shall not have lived in vain." And finally, Julian of Norwich ".....I was filled with an everlasting security that supported me completely, and I was without fear. This feeling was so blessed that I experienced nothing but peace and rest, and there was nothing on earth that could have disturbed me." No 'thou shalt's in those entries. Thank you Lorraine Kisly for this rich collection crammed with Ordinary Graces.

A surprise and delight
This book is beautifully conceived and executed. It is a rich collection of Christian spiritual writing rather loosely organized by general themes such as repentence and transformation. The selections are marvelous. There was nothing familiar (this is no "greatest hits") and there is astonishing breadth and quality. A constant surprise: selections that sounded very 'modern' in their psychological penetration are often from an obscure writer from the sixth century. So much hits home. I came away proud of my Christian heritage, determined to tap into it further, and inspired to take advantage of all the 'ordinary graces' available to me (and to everyone!).

Invaluable for Pastors
This book is a true gift -- full of deep, angular passages by thoughtful Christians from a huge variety of times and places. As a pastor, I find myself going back into it while working on sermons. Not for a clever line or for a cute quote by someone famous to give credence to what I want to say. No, these passages bring me deeper into the most profound truths of the faith. They improve my own thinking and praying and preaching.

Singer's Perspective
This is the definitive volume for all singers of 16th and early 17th century English madrigals. Ideal for small groups who want to sing a range of madrigals (both merry and sorrowful) on the hoof without having to juggle separate sheets and volumes. All the favourites are here. The typeface is clear and the A5 format easy to handle. The collection is arranged alphabetically but there is a usful listing by composer for those putting programmes together. Philip Ledger's editing is light of touch and should not offend the purists.

All the "hits" of the 1500-1600's!
What a great source for any madrigal group! This book contains a cappella madrigals of 3, 4, 5 and 6 parts (mostly SATB or SSATB) by the major composers of English madrigals, such as Byrd, Farmer, Gibbons, Morley, Ward, Weelkes & Wilbye. If you sing or study this type of music, you must have this book.

Also check out "English and Italian Renaissance Madrigals" (CD) by the Hilliard Ensemble -- the Oxford book and the English Madrigals CD of this wonderful 2-CD set have 16 songs in common.

superb book
An excellent, well-edited anthology! I appreciate the critical comments in the appendix. Also helpful is the given number of voices for each madrigal listing in the index. A perfect volume for my university "Vocal Chamber Ensemble".

Philip II and Alexander the Great Unify Greece in World History (In World History)
Published in Library Binding by Enslow Publishers, Inc. (2000)

Helpful and Interesting
A very informative book that tells really a lot about Macedonian king Philp the 2nd and the way he forced himself on the Greeks. There's not as much in there about his son, Alexander, but it was worthwhile anyway for anybody who wants to know about the wars of that time in ancient Greece. I highly recomend it.

A Good Overview of Philip II
This book is the best book I have seen about King Philip II for general readers. Several scholarly books that are available contain more information of course. But for those who want a simple, straightforward overview, this book is excellent. The book contains a good deal less on Alexander and seems to make the case that much of Alexander's later success was due to his father's considerable talents. Nice job all around.

A Very Informative Volume
The achivements and conquests of the Macedonian king Philip II are summarized in this highly informative volume. The author devotes most of the book to Philip, rather than his illustrius son, Alexander, which is Ok because there are plenty of books about Alexander out there already. It is really refreshing to find out how much of Alexnader's accomplishments were the result of his father's talent and achievements, which tend to get glossed over in a lot of books about Alexander. As one of the reviews above mentions, the author does a really nice job of working in actual quotes from ancient writers, which gives the book a strong feeling of authenticity.

Prescription For Greed
How do individuals of honesty and integrity slip into the gripping vise of financial greed? Why has our nation's healthcare system descended into a chaotic battle between the forces of personal and corporate gain, and that of compassion? Is our medical system deteriorating? How can ethics and morality be restored? Prescription For Greed answers these questions, as it enlightens its readers about the most serious problems our country must face. Its quality of life, even survival, depend on the issues the authors explore. The book is as excursion into the problems of modern medicine, set within the context of a mainstream novel; an instrument of education, at the same time it entertains. Co-author J. Willis Hurst is a former chariman of the Emory School of Medicine and has been involved in healthcare and teaching for over thirty years. The insight the novel provides is fueled by his passion for his field, as its characters reveal the profession's deepest secrets. His son, co-author Phillip W. Hurst, is an international business consultant. Specializing in behavioral systems analysis, he has a PhD in Psychology, which gives him extraordinary perception as a writer. This knowledgeable team provides a crucial resource for healthcare consumers. You can learn as much as you might in a college course, as you experience a compelling and interesting story. Because the authors live in Atlanta, where the story is set, they are able to add a distinctive regional flavor. The plot surrounds the fictional Dr. Connelly. A leader in medicine and cardiology, he has grounded his proteges in respect and honor for their vocation. When one's situation causes him to be vulnerable to financial temptation, all are affected. They undergo trials and tests of their values, as well as their friendship. Their patients' and their own lives depend on the outcome. The choices they make will altar them forever. Threaded with political intrigue, as well as romance, Prescription For Greed is well worth reading.

Pricing and Hedging Swaps

This book is Proper
In all my years of experience, I have never encountered a more helpful book in understanding the financial derivatives. Having gone countless rounds with the market in the past, I can safely say that everyone can use something like this in his/her corner. Dodging blows, keeping loose and flexible and countering with devastating shots are all fundamental in success in this business and Mr. Miron comes through with a training program that is second to none. I think that it is interesting to note that the authors are not focused on just finance and have interests completely outside of banking. As a matter of fact, I have had the pleasure to Mr. Miron and have actually heard him play in a band years ago. I must say that the man plays a mean guitar.

Capitalism brought to life in Technicolor.
Economic theory being a sort of hobby of mine, I couldn't help but notice this particular work. I have written a book myself of which I was quite proud, but this one just blew me out of my grave. I think that after reading this brilliantly written piece that I am completely turned around on the issue of economics. Perhaps flinging around finicncial derivatives is the way forward.

My only complaint is that the copy that I read was a photocopy. I find this distressing that there are so many photocopies of the work in circulation. As a distinguished writer myself, I, too, know the pains of not earning the residuals that are most deserved.

More pizazz than a Johnson Red Book
As a busy Central Banker, I have precious little time for truly entertaining reading. However, this book is a MUST for everyone involved in economic negotiations with Heads of State. It succintly and laboriously explains every aspect of the minutae of setting interest rate policies, issuing government debt and dealing with Presidents who can barely spell bond, let alone price a bermudan option on one. The only question I have is what is the Sterling thing that the authors go on about all the way through the book? Never heard of it.

Oh yeah, it also fits the annoying gap I have on the right hand nearside leg of my Central Banker-sized mahogany desk. Perrrrfect.

Now then.... back to annoying all those stoopid investment bankers.

Thanks for Helping Me Sleep Better
As the author of Desperately Seeking Snoozin', I am indebted to Dr. Hauri for his quote that I use on my front cover. Even more importantly, I will be eternally greatful to Dr. Hauri and the other great sleep researchers and clinicians that have developed the techniques that do offer hope for those with insomnia and other sleep problems. I incorporated techniques that he recommends to overcome my severe chronic insomnia problem. Additionally, I recently had the honor of meeting Dr. Hauri at an international sleep convention. In addition to his understanding of insomnia, he is a very nice man. His book should be required reading for anyone with sleep problems. He is the master.

The Mayo Clinic program for treating Sleep Problems
The newest edition of the book is now available in paperback. The first edition was exceedingly helpful -- the new edition has even more material, including some newly developed techniques. By the way, the book has two authors: Dr. Peter Hauri, of Mayo Clinic, the world's leading expert on insomnia, and Shirley Linde, the well-known science writer and author of some 37 books, including No More Snoring.

This book changed my life
I happened into this book in a bookstore several years ago. At the time, I was experiencing sleep difficulties that were interfering with my life and work. This book works methodically through possible causes of sleep disturbance, and provides exercises that the reader can follow to determine the causes of their own sleep problems and how to solve them. Using the book's methodologies, I was able to determine within a couple of weeks the surprising cause that I was trying to get more sleep than my body needed. Therefore I was never sleeping particularly well and always feeling tired. I began to cut down on my sleep time, and almost immediately began to feel better! The point, however, is that this book provides tools for anyone to determine the causes of their sleep difficulties and begin to resolve them. I highly recommend it.

Non-Linear Time Series Models in Empirical Finance

nice coverage if non-linear time series
Like his other books, Franses provides an nice applied treatment of non-linear time series models that are in this case applicable to finance. It includes extensive coverage of regime switching models. It includes data drawn from several financial markets including Tokyo, London and Frankfurt.

A Long-Awaited Update To Granger and Terasvirta's Book .
The major distinction of the book from Granger&Terasvirta's earlier work is its focus on financial applications of regime switching (RS) models and the author's separate treatment of RS in returns(means) and volatilities(variances) by putting them in different chapters. Another welcome feature is the availability of accompanying procedures in Gauss downloadable from the author's website. I would have expected a lengthier treatment of Markov RS models but I guess either the authors leave this to Tsay's new book or quote Hamilton as classical reference source.

De-mystifying organizational behavior
Finally! A simple, informative perspective on the complex office dynamics that so many of us face. The scenarios are well laid out and the examples easy to relate to. While other discussions of office dynamics tend to over-analyze situations, this book provided me with a straightforward roadmap to recognize and deal with daily personnel issues.

Helpful to employees and employers alike.
In an easy-reading format the authors have pointed out many office situations that relate to family situations. They give practical and useful suggestions for handling these problems. Worthwhile reading for anyone who works in an office setting.

A must for managing
This book is a must for anyone who has to manage people in an office, organization, and even on a committee. It is easy and interesting reading and a MUST to understand why the people you manage behave as they do.

go professor Gerrig!!!!
I had the pleasure of taking intro psych with professor Gerrig (one of the authors),and surprise, this was the book we used. I found it to be a great resource;it is so jam packed with useful information about things that we encounter in life that i'd recommend buying this book even if you're not a psych student.

Psychology and Life - One of the best "intro" books
I have about 30 introductory psychology books on my shelf, and none is more dog-eared and appreciated than this latest edition by Zimbardo and Gerrig. The breadth of coverage is astonishing, and they do so without sacrificing depth - several of the chapters (such as the outstanding ones on sensation and perception) are rigorous enough even for a graduate course in cognition.

The style is eminently readable and still manages to cover all the important points. This is one of the best selling textbooks in the field of psychology with a long history of satisfied students and instructors, and this is no accident.

I am PSYCHED about "Psychology and Life"!
As a newcomer to the field of Psychology, I was fascinated by Zimbardo's extensive, albeit easily digestable overview of this exciting field. With consummate prose and compelling excercises all incorporated into a perfecty cohesive whole, this is truly a masterpiece not only among psychology textbooks, but all textbooks. Enjoyable and educational, it is the perfect reference for anyone interested in psychology.
