Flying Tiger: Chennault of China
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Publishing Group (1973)
Author: Robert Lee Scott
Amazon base price: $19.50
Used price: $15.00
Average review score:

this book is a must-read for chennault fans!
This book was written at the tail end of B/gen scotts career as commander of Luke Air Force Base in arizona. Knowing what we know now about Gen Chennault and his men and their collective discontent for authority, specifically the likes of clayton bissell and joseph stilwell, i can only assume that "Scotty" held back somewhat in this writing. Maybe back in the 50s you were supposed to be reserved. However, this is an excellent story of one of the rennaisance men of aviation, a man who single handedly changed the way we fight in the air. Chennault was handcuffed almost from the start, being labeled as a maverick and cast aside much too early in a career that would eventually transform itself into the world of civilian air transportation with the flying tiger line.

There have been many books on chennault, but this one is one from one of the "regulars" who won over not only chennault but his band of merrymen known as the AVG, or the REAL flying tigers.! It is definitely one that i recommend to any fan of Gen chennault or Robert L. Scott.

great book to understand financial functions
I read the Japanese version of this book. This is one of the best finalce books I've ever read. This book helped me to understand much better the future of financial businesses. It is especially good in explaining: what is the rationale for financial intermediaries to exist, how capital markets evolved, why corporations hedge by themselves, and how asymmetric information affects financial instruments.

Movies in a new light
Most movie reviewers are biting critics, Jay Scott is no exception. If he doesn't like something he isn't going to beat around the bush about it. The way he does it though, and the reasons he gives for both liking and disliking movies are original and fresh. What separates him from other reviewers are that his critiques are full of insight. Not only in what the movie attempts to portray but how it parallels to what is happening in the world. He considers everything from the director's past projects to where they stand on any number of issues. Scott succesfully melds together the insight of a psychiatrist, the power of words of any great poet and the wit of a stand up comic. For anyone looking for a fresh look on a movie they've seen or a place to start rather than roaming aimlessly through the video store aisles. 'Great Scott!' is the book for you.

Hollywood Planet: Global Media and the Competitive Advantage of Narrative Transparency (Lea's Communication Series)

"Transparency" is Redefined By Scott Robert Olson
America produces more than its fair share of internationally popular television programs and feature films, a phenomenon that has not been understood until now. Scott Robert Olson explains the power of American media and its effect clearly in this volume by redefining the term transparent: "Transparency is the capability of certain texts to seem familiar regardless of their origin, to seem a part of one's own culture, even though they have been crafted elsewhere." One prime example cited is the presentation scene in Disney's "The Lion King." Mufasa smears his infant son's forehead with dirt and melon juice then lifts him high for the cheering animals to view. The polysemy of this ritual leaves plenty of room for many cultures to mentally adapt it to their own infant initiations: baptism, bris, shahada, circumcision. "The presentation of Simba is none of these rituals and all of them," Olson writes. Written in an academic style that is heftier than the title might indicate, Olson's well thought out and documented thesis is an original one to which Hollywood producers will pay close attention if they want a formula for being internationally successful. Olson's new application of the term "transparent" will be run up the flagpole and saluted by communication experts trying to explain why American television and films command global audiences.

The exciting life of an exciting man!
If you want to get to know John Brown, his family, his life, his problems and his ways, you have to read this book, from his childhood to his death in Virginia after the raid of Harper's Ferry each station of his life is shown in detail (which makes it sometimes difficult to read with pure pleasure). Before I read this book I knew about Brown as a criminal, a fanatic, a murderer may be. Yes, he was... but you have to know what shaped him to be a fanatic and a murderer. His life was a struggle for freedom, and he was beat hard by life. He came on the wrong way or better: He went too far on the right one. This is a very exciting and helpful book! Just read it!
