An excellent enquiry into the nature of heresy.
This book is a real gem. An excellent enquiry into the nature of heresy and the role heresy played in the development of Newman's philosophical and theological identity. The author has an impressive knowledge of the works of Newman, intellectual and cultural developments in 18th Century and 19th Century European history. The book gives real insight into the intellectual development of Newman and provides a useful key to gaining a correct understanding of Newman. The book is well written in a concise and readable style. The footnotes are most helpful to people who want to explore the world's of Post-modernism and its expression in the theological and philosophical fields. Such a book only increases one's admiration for Newman and for the excellent scholarship of Dr. Thomas.

A biography of Newman which never flags
Theologians tell me that this is the ONLY biography of 19th Century English churchman John Henry Newman to read.
The book is long, but uniformly accurate and well prioritized.
For myself, the best part takes Newman from his birth in 1801 through his first religious conversion--to the Evangelistic pattern of the Church of England--in 1816. I have read at least two dozen accounts of "Young man Newman" and Gilley's trumps them all.

The Book That Begat Vatican II
The importance of this work on the development and conclusions of Vatican II cannot be overstated. Newman held vociferously that the laity, not just the hierarchy, form the consensus fidelium, or the consensus of the faithful. Newman asserts that the "magisterium" (although he doesn't use the word) comes into existence through pastoral consultation of the faithful. Newman shows that many times the Church held views it later discarded, because those views were ultimately disavowed by the faithful. It is to Newman's credit that he maintained the importance of the faithful in the development of christian doctrine (another topic on which he writes eloquently).

The only complete field guide for the birds of India.
I used this book for three years while living in India. While its illustrations are not as robust or detailed as those of western field guides, they are usually adequate. First, and foremost, though, is that this volume is currently the ONLY book that contains all the species. Others contain a mere fraction. For that reason alone, this is the one book you should get for IDing birds in India. The rest lead only to disappointment, unless used in conjunction with this one.
This book is the illustration subset of the much larger Handbook, which comes in a 10-volume set (or in one tiny-print "compact" volume). The two work well together: one for your field forays, and one for the bookshelf back home. Be warned, though: the compact Handbook, while an exhaustive study of each species (including migration maps and exhumed stomach contents, etc.) is expensive when you can find it.

A nice juvenile biography of Colonial orator Patrick Henry
"A Picture Book of Patrick Henry" introduces young readers to the most famous orator of the American Revolution. Author David A. Adler tells the story of both Henry's life and his political career, which saw him elected as the first governor of Virginia. This juvenile biography also deals in a straight-forward manner with some of the unhappy events in Henry's life, such as the mental illness of his first wife and his arguments against adopting the Constitution. Consequently, readers will get a pretty good understanding of why Henry was an important figure in the American Revolution. Artists John and Alexandra Wallner provide attractive line-and-watercolor illustrations. The book includes an interesting Author's Note, in which Adler takes issue with biographer William Wirt's description of Henry and deals with Henry's ownership of slaves (Wirt was actually the one who "wrote" Henry's famous speech as part of his biography). Adler's Picture Book Biographies looks at over two dozen famous people including Simon Bolivar, Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Sitting Bull. This series looks like it is worth checking out.

A well-written, entertaining and accurate source on pirates.
"The Pirates of the New England Coast" constitutes a very well researched and serious source on Piracy for the period 1630-1730. I highly recomend this book, which is well written, entertaining and accurate. The main character is Boston-born Edward Low, the most notorious of all New Englanders who became pirates. Five chapters are dedicated to him, and one to Captain Lowther, his closest partner in plundering. Three chapters are interesting accounts written by seamen who were captured and remained on board Low's ship for weeks. These narrations are among the most valuable sources dealing with life on board a pirate ship. The exploits of other less known pirates such as Harris, Spriggs, Phillips and Fly,(who were all sailing under Low for some time before seeking their own fortunes independently), are also well detailed and researched, based on first hand documents, including: state papers, judicial documents on the pirate trials, and gazettes dating from the Colonial Period.

A must buy for O'Neill fans
This is considered to be one of the finest overall summaries of the works of Eugene O'Neill, one of America's finest playwrights. I found it to be insightful, challenging, and very helpful in my readings of O'Neill's works. I highly recommend it.
