One of the best books I've ever read- Period!
Anybody who has every experienced that odd feeling of fascination while watching a Tati film will find Chion's cinematic psychotherapy a beautiful treasure. Chion is a wonderful poet and a brilliant film theorist; I would expect nothing less to pay tribute to Tati's magnificent artistry.

Las Siete Partidas, 5 vol. set (The Middle Ages Series)
Published in Paperback by University of Pennsylvania Press (2001)
Authors: Robert I. Burns, Samuel Parsons Scott, and Alfonso X the Learned of Castile
Amazon base price: $135.00
Average review score:

Seven Divisions in five books
It's such a relief to have the Siete Partidas available in this attractive, reasonably priced set. The venerable Robert I. Burns has given it a wonderful general introduction and the index increases its accesibility even more than the very clear translation does. No more ploughing through paragraph after paragraph of Old Spanish, in 19th-century print, to get to the enlightening and even entertaining ideas that so well characterize the 13th century and give sociological background to any kind of medieval research.

Los Soldados Irlandeses de Mexico

Authors: Michael Hogan and Clever Alfonso Chávez Marín

(English version of review) Finally, this excellent volume on the dramatic and important story of the San Patricio Batallion, which fought on the Mexican side during the 1846-48 Mexican War, has been translated, by a Mexican brigadier general, Clever Chávez Marin; an outstanding historian in his own right. Thus, all the rigorous research, and all the story's poetry captured by Hogan is now available to readers of Spanish.

Of Irish descent (one of his forebears appears on the plaque in a Mexico City plaza which commemorates the batallion's valor), Hogan was also consultant on the film "One Man's Hero" -- a U.S./Mexican project which explores the San Patricios' adventures and ultimate tragedies.

The book is a compelling response to many studies which continue to defend the U.S."manifest destiny" of this era, and, with its lively style, has achieved equally impressive popularity in Mexico, the U.S. and Ireland.

Hogan gives us a view of personal and historic triumphs during a conflict which even such leaders as Grant and Lincoln considered as "shameful", he gives us new facts and resources borne of his years of research, and now, with the collaboration of Chávez Marin, he permits us to celebrate the triumphs of the memorable characters who figured in this historic episode.

Mexico en Una Nuez y Otras Nueces
Published in Paperback by Fondo De Cultura Economica (01 January, 1996)
Author: Alfonso Reyes
Amazon base price: $2.99
Average review score:

An introduction to a key thinker
Reyes is one of the forefathers of Latin American thought and literature. This anthology, for Spanish speaking readers, is the right introduction to the complexities of his work. The first essay, Vision de Anahuac, focuses on a nostalgic reconstruction of the mighty Aztec empire from a cosmopolite position. The second, Mexico en una nuez, analyses the specificity of Mexican history. The small volume also includes two short stories: La cena, a brilliant short story that was used by Carlos Fuentes as a model for Aura and La silueta del indio Jesús. The volume is highly recommendable for students of mexican literature, as well as readers interested in Latin America outside the Boom. Reyes was also a nominee for the Nobel Prize and a friend of Borges.

Magnificent Catalogue of a Magnificent Museum
Rarely have books of the nature of "Museum Collection" catalogues been so lavishly produced as THE PRADO MUSEUM published by Abrams in 1997. The sheer size of this tome and the expense have probably put off some art lovers, but this is not a book to let slip into obscurity. The organiztion of the book matches the layout of the museum: artists are treated to individual sections where there works can be most appreciated like the condensed spaces of adjoining rooms in the museum itself and each is treated by essayists who know the works and thankfully know how to write!
The reproductions are first class, the number of color plates is astonishing. For those who have not had the privilege of visiting the Prado Musuem there will be many surprises. For those who know the art of Spain already, there will be embellishments that are enriching to the eye and the mind. And for those who know the Museum, this book is a must for memory reference. A brilliantly produced Magnum Opus.

a catholic classic
This is the best catholic book ever written on preparing for death. The scholarship in this book is enormous. The book shows us that we are here to prepare our souls for heaven. The author uses the most logical and forceful arguments to show us this is the case. Point by point, he shows us why we are on earth, the vanity of life and the distractions people attend to instead of working to save themselves. The underlying theme of the book is that this world is a place of suffering and preparation for heaven and that is in heaven that we will be perfectly and eternally happy. People in this age may laugh at such ideas. That want everything here on earth. But how, writes the author, can anyone be really happy when there are so many problems and suffering in the world? He has an excellent point. He writes that God makes it easy for us to save our souls and that it would be foolish not to take advantage of prayers, mass and all the other helps God gives us. I couldn't agree more.

Happy Endings Tend to be Mythical
A society under stress must change or be destroyed. A pre-columbian Native American village in the Southwest has endured many years of drought and has reached its breaking point. Will the external forces of nature or the internal strife of the people be the hammer that shatters the village? This question is explored through the eyes of a boy, named Salt in the language of his people. Salt survives the machinations of a powerful member of his tribe, then begins a quest to find salvation for his people. Ostensibly a novel for young adults, Runner in the Sun presents a complex metaphor to explore the forces of societal change within a familiar hero-quest plot. The story seems simple but has rich soil in which anthropological and linguistic fruit may grow. Even the boy's name, Salt, carries metaphorical depth. As the village's water evaporates in drought, what is left is the people's true essence--the minerals the water carried. D'Arcy McNickle's lifelong focus on the shape of Indian society and its relationship to its surrounding world are expressed in the mythic context of Runner in the Sun (which is also a plain good read, too).
