Kriegie No Bomb!
Kriegie 7956 captures more than Vernon Gatewood as a POW in a German Prisoner of War Camp. It captures the reader and hooks him in a matter of minutes. Well written and easily read, this book can not be put down. Small in size, it is big in theme and conflict. The true story of Vernon Gatewood, a Marietta, Ohio native, and his "adventures" in training to be a bombadier, his actual flights, and in his incarceration in Nazi prisoner of war camps after his bomber crashed, makes for compelling reading. Mr. Gatewood and his daughter-in-law, Betty, have taken a historical time period that many junior high students know nothing about and have given them an exciting read that doesn't weigh them down with a lot of technical terms, but instead gives them the true feelings of a man who went through hell and back to return to his family. Filled with pictures from that time period, the book takes no more than a couple of hours of intense reading, but is well worth the price and the effort expended. If you want your child or students to learn about WWII from a different perspective, then Kriegie 7956 by Betty and Vernon Gatewood is,hands down, the best little book in town!

Unique!
An excellent account of a student's discovery of her grandfather's experiences in WWII as a member of a bomber crew, and the trying tale of his survival as a POW in Nazi prison camps.
Extremely well written from a novel perspective, that of a student working on a history project.
A sleeper, everyone should get this book!

Perhaps Biased Brother
Let me start my review of "KRIEGIE 7956" by thanking my sister, Betty Jean Belkham Gatewood, for my copy. Betty and Vernon were nice enough to sign one and send it to me hot off the press. I loved every bit of it. Of course it was nice to be mentioned a couple of times too, thank you both.

If I may, I'd like to say a few words to each of the authors and to Betsy:

Betty Jean,

Thank you for helping Vernon to tell his story to Betsy and at the same time helping him get the story put down in a form that we can all enjoy. I hope to see more of your work in the future

I'm very proud of you. You have managed to capture the essence of Vernon's story and record it in such a way that the reader feels like they are there. At the same time you wrapped the story of Betsy's education around it. What a great format.

I know you wrote this with a couple of different audiences in mind, and honey I think you managed it very well. I hope the kids enjoy reading it, and learn as much from it, as I did. I'm sure they will.

Your bro,
Ernie

Vernon,

Thank you so much for the recounting your war remembrances for Betsy and to us, the readers. It must still be very difficult for you to recall the pain and difficulties you endured during your time as a kriegie and we all thank you for working with Betty Jean to record and publish your "Pursuit of Freedom" for Betsy and future generations.

Regards,
Ernie

Betsy,

I think you were the real winner/hero here. You learned a great history lesson from your grandfather Vernon and you were able to help your mother pass it on to others in such an entertaining way. Thank you for sharing your story with us.

Much love to you,
Your Uncle Ernie

Great pictures, virtual assurance of success!
I adore this book. As a knitter, I'd been finding more and more patterns embellished with crochet details. I tried to teach myself but a lot of books were too wordy and not basic enough. I can't rave enough about the pictures in this book....they are very very clear...what the stitch should look like, where you put the hook, etc. True to the title, I was crocheting the same day I picked it up and had completed one project the first weekend.

I had signed up to take a crochet class before I bought this book. The class was so badly taught that a few of the students came over to me to share my copy of this book. By the end of the class the students using my book were crocheting! It is that good.

I can make afghans!
This book is so clear with it's instructions. I really learned how to crochet in one day (actually less than a day, I'd say a few hours at the most). This book is the next best thing to having someone actually show you how to crochet. The patterns are simple yet beautiful. This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn quickly.

The Best Book for a Beginner!
This book is easy to follow with step by step instructions & illustrations on all the basics. It takes you thru each step with extreme detail and helpful hints. I bought several books to help me learn to crochet, but this was the only one I used!
I would highly recommend it for any beginner! I will also keep it as a "how to" reference.

A delightful book!
Charmian Carr has written a delightful book about her
being Liesl in, "The Sound of Music." The notes from her fans are very enjoyable to read and heart-warming, how they were so touched by the film. Jean Strauss is also an author of it as well. It's a delightful book, full of interesting letters, and stories. Also it has many lovely photos, of then and now. I highly recommend it. It is great fr anyone, whom really enjoyed the fim, "The Sound of Music."

THIS BOOK WAS REALLY GOOD, I LEARNED SO MANY STUFF AND ETC.
Look at the subject first, than read on. This is the continuing story of Forever Liesl. I'm really glad read this too.

Another Warm, Cozy Read
I have the good fortune of having had Charmian Carr autograph my book for me and it's well worth having, as is the book itself. Many of the letters in this book are charming and thoughtful and the narrative by Miss Carr is just as gentle and loving as her first book. These two books should prove that there is a market out there for books that tell charming stories and entertain readers at the same time. Charmian Carr obviously has no axe to grind regarding her "Sound of Music" experiences and I found it extremely touching that all seven actors who played the Von Trapp children keep in pretty close contact with each other. I highly recommend this book and am secretly hoping that Miss Carr has enough anecdotes and memories to fill a third book. Do we dare hope?

Wonderful tribute to all mothers
This book of Jean Young's lessons is a tribute to all mothers. They are valuable life lessons for any woman. These may not be the exact lessons your mother taught, but if you add them to your mother's loving lessons of life, you are sure to have a great map to follow.

Love Legacy
March 5, 2000 On reading this book, I reconnected with the tremendous love felt for my mother and the rich experiences she provided me and my siblings. Throughout, I smiled on recognizing the churchgoing experiences and other events also present in my childhood and the southern expressions incorporated in my speech. Thank you for a book that not only celebrates Ms. Young's outstanding African-American mother, but also, my mother and many other unsung mothers who shared special, loving relationships with us, their daughters.

A good read
I always like to read about the lives of other people. Especially one as famous as Jean Young. Her daughter has written a lovely biography as well as life lessons that were taught to her by her mother. A wonderful gem of a book to be read by young and old alike.

Inspiring and Touching!!! AWSOME!
This book is among the top of my favorites! The story is inspiring and heartwarming. Excellent writing puts you back in the 1930s-40s and brings the characters to life. It was one of thoughs books that made me feel like I could relate with the characters on such a deep level as if they were real people! Reading about them was almost like visiting them as friends... Comming to the end of this book was difficult cuz I didn't want it to end!

Review of Listen for the Singing
This is one of my favorite books! Anna Solden is 14 year old German girl living in Canada in the 1940s. She begins her first year at a normal high school after years of special classes at a special school due to her very poor eyesight. She experiences predjudice from one of her teachers because of her German background, but makes several new friends regardless. Her brother Rudi, oldest of the 5 Solden children, goes off to fight in the war, but returns blind. Anna helps him cope with his dramatically altered lifestyle, and the two of them become close friends despite Rudi's cruelty towards Anna in earlier years. (In "From Anna")Listen for the Singing is an amazing book, and I would recommend it to teens especially.

Awesome!
This is the sequel to "From Anna" Anna is now in high school, and on the first day she is so nervous!!!! She makes tons of new friends, and helps her brother Rudi cope with being blind. Rudi injers his eyes when he goes off to war. I loved this book!!!!!

Look to the North
Jean Craighead George has always been a favorite author of mine, and coincidentally enough, I have always been fond of wolves, so imagine my surprise when I, the dainty little girl of the 90s received "Look to the North" from my Aunt. Immediately I fell into the outstanding illustrations, and the unique way to follow the lives in my favorite animal.
Several years later, and with a sense of higher literacy later, I am found sitting in my high school English class pulling out one of my favorite possessions from my dusty children stories-bookcase and regained my sense of wonder again for the first time since my innocent age of nine. It's a wonder that the edges wave not been torn as much as my other treasures, and looked upon it as some sort of holy artifact saved in my holy sanctuary now adorned by hundreds of photographs, oil paintings, and sketches of wolves I can know honestly blame the inspiration on this very story. Sometimes you have to wonder how something as insignificant as a children's story can effect your life.
"A Look to the North" is about, you could say, the story of a wolf pack introducing the pups from birth to adulthood. If your son or daughter takes interest in any animal, buy him or her this book. Neither of you will regret it.

A splendid picture book from a true wolf-lover
In short, this is a wonderful book. Jean Craighead George, author of over eighty books for children, excellently combines her knowledge and love of wolves with her love of words. Written like a mix between the JULIE OF THE WOLVES books and DEAR REBECCA, WINTER IS HERE, this elegant story will find its way into the heart of anyone who adores and respects these magnificent animals, or anyone who admires nature. The illustrations are also spectacular and heartfelt. You can see more of my reviews at other Jean Craighead George titles.

LOOK TO THE NORTH: A WOLF PUP DIARY Masks Fact As Fiction
"I love wolf pups" begins the introduction (written by the author) to LOOK TO THE NORTH. George's readers could easily have figured that after at least a page of this educational picture book.

Telling the story of Boulder, Scree, and Talus, three fictional wolf pups, it truly is a wolf pup diary, as there is a new page for every critical stage in wolfpuphood. You can learn something new about early months of wolf pups on every page, while the style and storyline of the book are brilliantly masked as fiction (for the porpose of the book appealing to young ones.)

The full-color pictures only add to the fun of this book, and the detials in them are breathtaking! The pictures alone are enough to tell the story to the very youngest readers, but the words give something the pictures cannot, as do almost all books that I have seen.

Note that older readers will also enjoy JULIE OF THE WOLVES and it's two sequels, JULIE and then JULIE'S WOLF PACK, by Jean Craighead George, the author of LOOK TO THE NORTH: A WOLF PUP DIARY.

And now I have no more to say, so, as ends the introduction....

Why do I love them so? They are wonderful. Look to the north and you will love them, too.

If you can find that special someone then go for it!!!!
This book was great!! You don't want to put it down because you just have to know what's going to happen next. Some of us enjoy this type of book because many of us really do hope for a special someone deep down inside. This book shows how love can happen via the internet. It has more than love in it. It has mystery and how much a person will help another out not knowing who they really are. It was exciting because you didn't know who was going to do what next. You would think "I know who did it" then turn the page and it was someone else. That's what keeps the reader going, they don't get bored because it keeps them guessing. Great book - when's the next one coming out!!

Everyone's Up -to-Date Novel
This author knows how to write. I'm sure some of her ideas & experiences portrayed in this story come from her real life events. Even though this book is supposed to be primarily a love story, it touches several more emotions than those associated with romance. She very cleverly threw in deception, comraderie,
family ties, mystery & most appropriately, a happy ending with a touch of humor. It's difficult to put down once you get started.
The relationship of the two main characters is in itself unique as it draws a parallel to the "You've Got Mail" story that became so popular a year or so ago. I like Emelia's take on the computer based love better. We can only hope for a sequel.

Excellent Book!
Excellent Book!

This book has lots of love, romance, suspense, and sex!..
I started reading this book and could not put it down!.It has so much in one book, it keeps you guessing from the beginning to the end.

It develops into a great story!..

The author actually pulls you right into the book with her characters.

It's excelently written and I would recomend this book to any adult! you won't be sorry only aroused!

My wife loved it too!!

Good starting point
Basic informations. I'm happy I read it, to prepare my transfert from interior karting to exterior karting. A lot of small details that give the direction about what to check and not forget.

Great introduction to the sport.
Being new to the sport and needing many questions answered I went for this book. I got everything I needed including lists of the local Karting clubs in the area and karts/parts supliers.

What every prospective karter must have
This book is what every prospective karter needs.I simply used the lists provided and went on to buy the right parts and equipment. Saved me a lot of time and money. Every prospective karter should have one.

The book is well written, the photos are clear and very helpful.

Perfect with my first cup of coffee each day.
Well, a friend gave me this book a few months ago and I've already read it twice. There are about 60 short (2-4 page) sections, and it's perfect to read one section every morning with my first cup of coffee. It's almost like having coffee every morning with a really close friend who cares about me and wants me to have a wonderful day. It becomes sort of a meditation and a treat to spend my five minutes a day with this book. And, just as it's supposed to, it puts me in a frame of mind to really live and appreciate each day, and to be kind to myself. It's NOT one of those books with lots of phycho-mumbo-jumbo. Instead, it's full of warm, personal, and vivid stories. It's definitely a book you'll want to give to all your friends as a friendship book, or for birthdays, or whatever. Absolutely recommended for people who are already normal and happy (as well as everybody else).

Make Friends With This Book
If that sounds double-edged, that's good! That's how I meant it! This book is so relaxing, uplifting, and enjoyable that it really is like being around a good friend. A friend is somebody you spend quality time with: who picks you up when you need a boost, inspires you, gives you excellent practical advice, makes you laugh, is always around when you need them, and with whom you look forward to sharing more time! The book has seven main sections in it, filled with chapters that are only a few pages long each. At the end of each chapter are suggested exercises to help you gain the most experience and insight from the subject matter discussed. The chapters are based on life experiences that we can all relate to. The exercises can be practical, introspective, occasionally frivolous, but they are all fun! And they are all designed to offer you advice on how to enjoy your time, not be at the mercy of it. So, I would definitely say, "Get this book, and see how quickly it makes a difference in the way you use your time." And the other edge of the sword...give this book to someone you care about, or somebody you'd like to have as a friend. I guarantee they will appreciate it, and you will have done what the title of my review says!

You CAN make friends with time!
This isn't another "How to Multi-Task Even More Craziness into Your Day" advisory. In fact, it's just the opposite. Peggy and Tracy suggest you stop. That's all. Just pause, breathe and enjoy what's happening in your life at this very moment.

The book stems from the authors' years as corporate consultants for executives. Their life experiences went into the book. They were extremely busy entrepreneurs with extemely busy lives, traipsing all over the planet, and these things worked for them. If they could make friends with time, you can, too.

First become aware of the choices you have about how you can spend your time. Then notice what's taking place around you. Throughout the day are moments of renewal, moments of freshness that help transform the usual experience of getting to the end of the day exhausted because you've drained yourself. When you're in the present moment, the day opens up. This book offers reminders to help you access inner time as well as outer time. You can begin to be in the rhythm and timing of your own life, and get in tune with what that is for you. It's about the quality of time, not just the quantity.

Not everyone can go retreat at a monastery, but everyone can stop and take five, learn a song that helps them slow down. You don't need money, don't need to take time off. In fact, as a culture, when we're on that long-awaited year-end vacation, lots of us are so exhausted we just drink all day. People don't know how to be with themselves, don't know how to just BE, 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. The key concept in this book is learning how to be fully present in each moment and how that transforms the way you experience yourself and your life. It's very simple, yet very profound.
