Eloquent Book!
Gary Randolf has done a remarkable job of splicing natural history, Americans and psychical beauty into one great book. Traveling through time and seasons, the reader feels the words and witnesses the beauty of the Adirondack mountains. It's not just full of incredible landscape shots (both subtle and grand) but is matched with a moving narrative that warns us this island paradise will always be in danger.

Time for the world to take heed, especially in a period of history when our government seems to feel that acid rain is so irreversible here, that we can actually lower emissions standards? That the damage is already done? It's not too late, and Mr. Randorf reminds us with every page.

The Best of Gary North
Published in Audio Cassette by Duneroller Publishing (01 October, 2001)
Author: Gary North
Amazon base price: $99.95
Average review score:

Excellent Compilation...
Dr. North always says, "You can't beat something with nothing...", and this compilation reflects the broad extent of his thoughts and efforts to defeat the effects of secularism in our culture as well as the social impotence of much of modern evangelicalism. These tapes are chock full of ideas and insights that open many doors to Christian social impact. North's treatment of Marxism and Darwinism deserve honors for exposing the religious foundations of both systems. But he does not stop there - he shows how society has been infected with these concepts and how we can work to overturn their effects (This is characteristic of North's work in general). I especially loved his contrast of "Cast Away vs. Robinson Crusoe", and his systematic bashing of the movie "Left Behind". Also particularly important are his presentation of the "Internet College" and his criticisms of the college professor tenure system and accreditation system. North does an excellent job of exposing the quiet methods of control that secularism has on American education (and therefore culture in general), yet also proposes means whereby determined Christian people can undermine the secular system. Overall I recommend these tapes for anyone who desires to see Christianity have an impact on culture, starting with ther own families and communities.

A kind of anthropological detective story
Gary Maier's The Eagle's Voice: Tales Told By Indian Effigy Mounds is a kind of anthropological detective story based on Maier's research involving a group of about fifty Indian effigy and conical mounts located on the north shore of Lake Mendota, in Madison, Wisconsin. In his explorations Maier developed a new understanding and insight into these structures which had fascinated and puzzled Europeans and Americans from the 1830s down to the present day. Exceptionally "reader friendly", The Eagle's Voice is enthusiastically recommended reading for the non-specialist general reader with an interest in Native American culture in general, and the effigy mounds of Wisconsin in particular.

A distillation of decades of experience
Volume three in the oustanding Greycliff "River Books" series, Fly Fishing The Madison offers the aspiring angler a distillation of decades of experience, knowledge, and insight in this "user friendly" guide to fishing Montana's Madison river. Here is a wealth of information on the hatches, seasons, and reaches of the river, along with "tips, tricks & techniques" for unlocking the secrets of an surprisingly diverse river. The authors show how to fish the Madison with dry flies, nymphs, and streamers, as well as pointing out the right moments for each type of fly. Of special interest is Craig Mathews' contributions about fishing the Madison's two "stillwater" areas -- Hebgen Lake and Quake Lake. If you are planning an excursion to the Madison, begin by a thorough reading of Craig Mathews and Gary LaFontaine's Fly Fishing The Madison! Also very highly recommended for the angler's reference shelf are the other volumes in this outstanding series: Fly Fishing The Beaverkill; Fly Fishing The Henry's Fork; and Fly Fishing The Yellowstone In The Park.

The author is not just an Ethnobotanist, he's a Poet!
Quite simply, read this book. It turns the subject of "ethnoecology" (sounds dull, doesn't it?!) into a poetic duet of plants and the relationship native peoples developed with them. Nabhan, in this book, profiles several individual species (found in his beloved Sonoran desert) as intimately as a biographer would profile an admired personage. The illustrations are delicate and so accurate you could go out and identify each species at first sight. I became enchanted, and wistful, at Nabhan's accounts of ingenious interactions of Southwest Amerinds and useful plants that allowed both to survive and thrive in such a harsh region. Wistful, because many of these vital prehistoric resources, such as panic grass and sandfood, are unknown to modern peoples, and virtually extinct. And with them, human ability to survive such harsh landscapes without radically modifying them is going extinct as well.
From Nabhan's perspective (in all his books), native peoples of a region are not interlopers, but another component of a balanced local ecology; the ecological diversity & resource potentials lost when the First World imposes foreign ecologies on regions is a subtext of all Nabhan's writings.
Each chapter of "Gathering the Desert" stands by itself; but together they lead to a conclusion of incomparable adaptation to what Euro-Americans see as a cactus "wasteland". I assign readings from this book, and the entire book, to my college classes in Southwest Indians and ecological anthropology. However, it has much wider appeal, and to call it "highly readable" is an understatement. I respect Nabhan's careful academic research and his commitment to actually going into the field to experience the peoples and the natural environment directly. I admire even more his ability to make what is very commonly a dull reporting of "what people ate" into a literary symphony. All his books are excellent; this is the best of the best.

You better get this book to tour Wisconsin!
...let me tell you a few things -- it really is the best darned guide to Wisconsin you'll ever find. He hit most every backroad in in the state. This book is different than the usual guides in that it focuses on the fun to drive wiggly roads that driving enthusiasts enjoy -- AND has an insiders view of where to go, stop, eat, play and shoot pictures. My husband says the publishers should have given it a better title...something like "The Cows Made us Do it"....but I suggest you get a copy and check out these tours. They're NOT your usual dash from one attraction to another. You'll have a great time. MPK

Honest Money: The Biblical Blueprint for Money and Banking

Author: Gary North

Clearest and simplest explanation of MONEY!
This is the best clearest and simplest explanation on the medium of exchange that I have ever read! This includes Jekyll Island by Griffin and Mullins on the Federal Reserve, each of which I have read twice. North provides answers and explanations the had hitherto escaped me. Some historical and biblical references are quite palitable. A paltry 160 pages that should be read by anyone and everyone using "money", what ever it might be at the time. Get and read this book!

Handsome coffee-table picture book
This is a beautiful book. The author is a photographer, and it consists almost entirely of large photos from competitions all over the United States. What is most unusual about the photos is that many of them are of ordinary riders, not just the frequently photographed superstars, and that his work frequently includes the rider within the entire setting - so rather than just a horse and rider, you get some context, both for the scene and for what competing is all about.
