Integrity in Depth (Carolyn and Ernest Fay Series in Analytical Psychology, No 2)
Published in Paperback by Fromm Intl (1995)
Authors: John Beebe and David H. Rosen
Amazon base price: $12.95
Average review score:

Integrity in Action
Integrity in Depth, by John Beebe, is a quiet, profound meditation on the concept of integrity. Dr. Beebe, a psychiatrist, Jungian analyst and scholar, has found a way to write effectively about a term that encompasses many qualities including authenticity, completeness, wholeness, and honesty. I found the book wise, tolerant, sophisticated but accessible, succinct, and filled with subtle compassion.

Beebe explores integrity from a psychological rather than moral perspective, while honoring the links between the two. For Beebe, integrity is neither blind obedience to "an elaborated system of justice." Nor is it to be confused with heroic inflation or ego-driven rebellion. Beebe locates integrity in the interplay of what Andrew Samuels terms "original morality" and "moral imagination." Integrity is found not in the outcome of a struggle between the two, but in the pattern of a dance. Integrity resides in the space between.

Beebe maintains that integrity is not selflessness, but balance between ego and Self. He writes: "Cicero and Franklin discovered a paradox: integrity, which would seem to presuppose a conscience uncontaminated by concern for political advantage, cannot be separated from personal ambition for approval. Rather it is the right way to win that approval." To Beebe, true integrity imparts a quality of delight.

Integrity in Depth explores the concept of integrity in many contexts. It includes important contributions to the discussion of ethics in psychotherapy. It also includes interesting ideas on the relationship of anxiety and shame to integrity, the function of the dream in restoring integrity, the relationship of eastern thought to integirty, and the connections between integrity and Twelve Step programs. There is an extended reflection on integrity and the work of Jung and some rather profound Post-Jungian observations on integirty and gender.

One reason why the book had an impact on me is that it contains so much evidence of Beebe's own integrity. This is manifested in many ways - the entire tone of the book, the precision of the language, the care with which ideas are attributed to others, and the author's willingness to include examples of his own experiences and feelings. In this sense, the book shows as well as tells the meaning of integrity. This is a fine book of obvious relevance to both personal life and the growing moral bewilderment of modern American society.

A fascinating look at civil rights development in the US
John David Skrentny has written a profound and deeply enlightening look at the development of affirmative action. His examination of the co-option of the race and quota issues by the right wing in the early 1970's is a must read for any student of history, politics, and American culture. A gifted and highly readable author, Mr. Skrentny takes the reader on a cook's tour of the social and political development of affirmative action. An excellent compoanion volume to Hugh Graham's civil rights work. Highly recommended.

Kneel before the Lord of Fantasy!
Interesting, very intersting. If you have ever wondered what made J.R.R. Tolkien write his epic master piece, or are curious about what he was like growing up, this book is a must fo you. Of course being a biography it can be a bit dull at times, but so what that how life is boy! This book afirmed that the respect and admiration I have for J.R.R. Tolkein was not just me blowing his importance out of proportion, for he truly always has, and always will be, a master of fantasy!

The Jewish People
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (1989)
Authors: David Goldberg and John D. Rayner
Amazon base price: $9.94
Used price: $1.88
Average review score:

Comprehensive account of Jewish History and Religion
I highly recommend this book to anyone that is interested in gaining an insight into the history, practices and literature of the Jewish people.

The book is broken down into 4 parts. In Part 1, Rabbis Goldberg and Rayner explain each phase in Jewish history from Abraham to the holocaust. With regards to their analysis of the biblical period, I was very impressed at their genuine concern with true history rather than just relying on scripture to provide the details. When dealing with each period, they refrained from giving painstaking details and rather delivered a good overview. Those wishing to satisfy their curiosity for details are able to consult the bibliography for further reading.

In Part 2, the Jewish literature for each period is reviewed including the origin of the Torah and an overview of Rabbinic literature such as the Talmud and beyond.

Parts 3 and 4 deal with the theory of Judaism and Jewish practices. These are excellent for those who are being introduced to Judaism for the very first time, or for those who could do with some revision or brushing up on some of the important rituals, laws and festivals.

Overall, I must say this book is informative and a pleasure to read and remains an excellent reference book.

Great book by a great author. (I loved his Marbury v. Madison: Powers of the Supreme Court, it is on ... also). In both books he takes potentially complicated subjects and boils them down to the important elements, and does it in an interesting and engaging way. I recommend this book to any teacher - or anyone wanting to understand learn more about history and law.

Excellent Explanation of Calvin's Exegesis
This is an incredibly readable and helpful volume! This was assigned by Dr. Peter Enns at Westminster Theological Seminary in our Old Testament class, and I have re-read it, and referred back to it several times. It will particularly help those who desire to understand the continuity, as well as the discontinuity, between the Old and New Testaments. Calvin's exegesis will help the mature Biblical expositor from falling into irresponsible "spiritualizing" and allegorical interpretations of the Old Testament. Buy it! Read it! Tolle, Lege! Tolle, Lege!
