Boundaries
I read the book and also went through an 8 week course taught by a woman/friend from my church. We used the video tape, the workbook and the bible, it was the most incredible teaching that I have ever experienced and literally has changed my life in the boundary department. I was always saying yes when I wanted to say no. I wanted people to think I was really nice when all the while I was worn out, stressed out and burned out. Though I am a Christian, I was a new Christian at the time and really wasn't up for something really churchy. It was perfect for where I was at and I would recommend it to anyone whatever their spritual belief's might be. I strongly recommend the video, so you can see what we do to ourselves on a daily basis without boundaries in our lives. Thank you for the opportunity to share this. Hope it will help others with their BOUNDARIES in life. Sincerely, Pamela K. Hayes (just got married)

One of the best books on developing healthy relationships
This book was recommended to me by a friend who works for a counseling call center. It may well become one of the classic books for people to read who need to develop or improve healthy boundaries in their relationships.

There are several case studies or examples of people who have gone through life thinking they were helping others, when in reality, they were actually enabling others to continue in whatever difficulty or struggle they were in, and worse yet, deepen the bonds of unhealthy interactions that have been coined "co-dependent".

I rate this book right up there with Dr. Larry Crabb's excellent book, "Inside Out". It is my opinion that anyone who struggles with how to relate to others in a healthy way (who doesn't?) ought to at least consider adding these two books to their inventory.

Boundaries by Cloud and Townsend does not bash you with a lot of "Christian-ese", but it is written with a Christian orientation. Even those ! unsure of such a foundation ought to consider this book anyway because it rings true. If you have a church library, this book should DEFINITELY be in it.

Irreplaceable
My friend has borrowed volume I and I'm afraid he may never give it back... There is so much that is subtle in the Gospels that is brought to light. I've never seen anything else like it. I'm shocked that this work was ever permitted to go out of print.

A treasure!
I am so glad this book is back in print! Can you imagine how valuable a Bible commentary written by early Christians themselves would be? Well, this comes very close! St. Thomas Aquinas himself compiled this opus from sermons and commentaries on the Gospels written by the early Church Fathers. He arranged their thoughts in such a way that they form a continuous commentary on each Gospel, verse-by-verse. How I wish Aquinas had done this with the rest of Sacred Scripture as well! It's pricey, but well worth it for the serious Bible scholar.

Most practical dictionary for ESL learners
Why is this book going out of print? It is the most down-to-earth dictionary of English that I have ever seen, with numerous excellent examples to illustrate usage. It is perfect for English language learners. I teach college English and writing, and every student who has seen this has been excited by it. The entries include information necessary for ESL students, such as countable and uncountable nouns, subtle differences in meaning, and idiomatic expressions. I keep it near my desk at all times, and prefer it over the standard Webster's or Random House dictionaries when working with students.

The best and well-presented English Language Dictionary
I bought this dictionary in May 1990 in Singapore.

The way the content presented is the best I had ever seen. This dictionary is written in ordinary, everyday English that is easy to understand. It has an excellent Guide to the Use of the Dictionary. Every explanation comes with at least one example that is taken from actual texts wherever possible. The extra column in the dictionary, right beside the explanation of a word, creates a visual attraction to the reader. This extra column is used to give two different types of information: grammar notes and semantic relationships (similar or opposite) for the word that is being explained. I love it.

CoBuild is the appreviation of Collins Birmingham University International Language Database. This dictionary was developed and compiled in the English Department at the University of Birmingham as part of a language research project commissioned by Collins Publishers.

Currently, I am looking for its enriched and/or, if any, CD-ROM version. Unfortunately, it seems that the publisher stopped publishing this great dictionary.

Excellent book for college drafting course.
This is an excellent college level text.I particularly like the detailed "real world" drafting problems for the students. Also it has a very good apppendix. It is comprehensive enough that we use it in three different courses here at Vincennes University.

EXTREMELY HELPFUL
I have had this book in my drafting library for some time now. I am always using it and recommending it. The book is laid out so that you can go from beginning drafting up through advanced. It not only says what the standards are, but walks you through drafting technology so that you understand why they are like they are. I believe that anyone that is going to be doing drafting should have this in their library.

Four Reasonable Men: Marcus Aurelius, John Stuart Mill, Ernest Renan, Henry Sidgwick
Published in Paperback by Wesleyan Univ Pr (1984)
Author: Brand Blanshard
Amazon base price: $16.95
Average review score:

A triumph by this century's greatest rationalist
Brand Blanshard, twentieth-century philosophy's greatest exponent of rationalism, here turns his pen to an examination of reasonableness in action, as exemplified in the lives of Marcus Aurelius, John Stuart Mill, Ernest Renan, and (Blanshard's own favorite exemplar of the "rational temper") Henry Sidgwick. Though himself a rationalist, Blanshard was not under the illusion that only avowed rationalists could be reasonable, as his selection of examples clearly shows. In each essay, he presents a lucid and sympathetic account of his subject's life and thought in a seamless combination that deserves to be called "philosophical biography."

While this volume is of course highly informative about each of its four subjects, it also of interest as regards Blanshard's own thought. He was ninety-two years old when he wrote this delightful and highly readable work, and his examinations of these four men distill a lifetime of his own reflections on the role of reason in the ordering of human affairs. A final chapter -- "The enemy: Prejudice" -- summarizes his mature views on the nature and importance of the rational temper.

The entry under Blanshard's name in the _Oxford Companion to Philosophy_ closes on an uncharacteristically personal note: "Blanshard's personal demeanour," writes the entry's author Prof. Peter H. Hare, "was one of extraordinary graciousness." That graciousness, evident throughout his work, is especially so here, where Blanshard deals less directly with philosophical questions and more directly with reasonableness as instantiated in actual human lives; his generosity and sympathy (much neglected rational virtues!) are almost palpable. If the rest of us could absorb something of his rational temper and spirit, our lives and the life of the world would undoubtedly be transformed for the better. And there is no better place to begin than this volume by a great man whose religion was the service of reason.

An easy read of a complex topic, this is worth seeking.
Wow! Who'd have thought that an author could approach such a topic as "reasonableness" and render it so well-defined, so palatable and so attractive. By using four historical examples, with focus not primarily upon their philosophies, but more upon their lives, Blanshard is masterful. As a noted philosophical and social commentator in his own right, the author does an excellent job of inserting his own interpretation on the four subject persons, and upon their historical & intellectual significance. Last, and maybe most important, is Mr. Blanshard's ability to communicate clearly. As far-fetched as it may sound, this book is truly a page-turner! I'd recommend this to anyone who feels the need for a book that makes you go, "Hmmmm." At the very least, it will leave any reader with an increased appetite for more reasonableness in his/her own life.

2nd Graders in Lockport LOVE the Henry and Mudge stories!
Our names are Luisa, Casey, Tom, Joshua, Tim, Megan, Alex, and Janae. We read Henry and Mudge and the Long Weekend. Here is our summary of the book: Henry and Mudge got up one Saturday Morning in February and looked outside. The weather was disgusting. They couldn't go outside and there was nothing to do. Everything was boring to Henry and Mudge. They were so bored that Henry and Mudge went to sleep on the couch with Dad. Henry's mother had the idea to make a castle out of the big refrigerator and stove boxes. Henry, Mom, and Dad started making the castle. Mom drew, Dad cut, Henry stapled, and Mudge chewed an old boot. The family woke up the next morning and started to work on the castle. Mom read the newspaper and drank coffee. Henry and his father finished the castle. They showed it to Mom. It looked nice. It looked like a real castle. Mom, Dad, Henry, and Mudge had a good weekend!

This is a great book!
I love the story line. A family working together on a yukky weekend minus the TV to do something fun. I esp. loved the picture of mom sitting at the table reading the paper while dad and son were building the castle in the basement. My kindergartener loved it! We will definitely read more of these books!

Henry and Mudge Get the Cold Shivers

You Got Me in a Cold, Cold, Sweat!
Our five-year old loves the Henry and Mudge series, and this is a fine example of its appeal. When Henry gets sick, he and Mudge share popsicles and crackers (well, Mudge gets the crackers; he gets the popsicles). But then, Mudge awakes and seems strangely subdued.

The family takes him to the vet, where, in one of the funnier scenes, the anxious dog sheds all over the waiting room. The happy ending, simple yet interesting structure, and depiction of a boy and dog's mutual love make for an entertaining book for young children. Repetition of some words and satisfying pictures tied to the story will help the new reader.

Fun!
Mudge is a personal favorite of my 8 year old son (a reluctant reader). The love Henry has for his drooling dog, Mudge is sweet. In this book, Henry gets a cold and must stay in bed doing puzzles, reading books and eating crackers. By the end of the book Henry has recovered but alas, Mudge has caught Henry's cold and no longer feels well enough to share crackers with Henry. Short chapters with a controlled vocabulary. We enjoy the adorable pictures.

Great color maps
This book covers all of WWII. It includes text, pictures, and great looking maps. This book has the best color maps of any WWII atlas I own (The Historical atlas of WWII, The Cassell Atlas of the second world war, & West Point atlas for the second world war Europe & the Mediterranean)

Very informative, with rich facts, text and pictures
Gives detailed maps of every battle of World War II. Also supplies facts about the time between the World Wars and the postwar era. Highly recommended.

American Tall-Tale in Ebonics
I first read this book as a child, and have re-read it many times as an adult. It is the story of a larger-than-life hero which appears to take place in the late 19th century. In Bradford's "John Henry", the traditional "steel-drivin'" man is a steamboat roustabout who goes up and down the Mississippi, from town to town, job to job, woman to woman. A lively cast of characters, including Stagger Lee, Poor Selma, and a character who pops up in odd places, referred to only as "a nigger named Sam" make this a very amusing story, and a great read for any age. An imaginative film producer (Spike Lee, perhaps?) could make a fortune from a movie version. John Henry's run-ins with women, bosses, liquor, cocaine, bad guys, gambling, and the law roll off him like water off a duck's back. A true superhero, his demise eventually comes in an unexpected way. I won't ruin the end--if you find this book, it's a must-read.

Reading with the King
That's Denzel Washington (not Eric Clapton) teaming his prodigious talents with those of blues legend B.B. King in this powerful retelling of the classic American legend. This is another treasure from Rabbit Ear productions: a beautifully illustrated book that can be read on its own, or with the included cassette. Go for the cassette first: You'll be treated to Denzel Washington's warm, rich, folksy, awe-struck, conversational narration.

"So y'all listen up, 'cause I'm gonna tell you the guaranteed, gold plated, ninety-nine-point-nice percent truth about John Henry."

Then, enjoy the inimitable riffs of B.B. King, as he and his guitar (presumably "Lucille") sing out with the pure, clear, authenticity of the blues: "My name is John Henry. I'm a born natural man. I was born one morning with a hammer in my hand . . . " This is collector material.

John Henry's triumph defends the dignity and perseverance of human labor against the encroaching machine. In its own small way, with a low-tech assist from the aural majesty of Washington and King, this volume preserves and extends the pleasures of the written page.

my child has listened to this tape for the last 90 days
John Henry is one of the best Rabbit Ears titles - which is saying a lot. BB King is wonderful; Denzel Washington is wonderful. I'm not writing this for me - but if my 8 year old goes to sleep to it every (I mean, make sure you rewind that tape) night, then it is a wonderful book
