An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States

Bad Thesis... Worth reading to answer the charges...
This book basically puts forward a theory that the founders just established the Constitution for their own personal economic gain. This book is well-researched, but its premise is totally flawed. Moreover, it tries to portray all of the founding fathers as self-serving and looking out for their own economic interests. It doesn't really explain why some of the wealthiest colonists and statesmen such as George Mason and Elbridge Gerry refused to sign on. Moreover, I'd recommend that any student of the Constitution, study the writings of James Madison and John Adams to answer these charges. I also recommend The Founder's Constitution set, edited by Phillip Kurland and Ralph Lerner. It is an excellent tool for examining original intent.

This book is only recommended for its historical value. The renowned constitutional scholar, Forrest McDonald, does an excellent job introducing this book and debunking its controversial charge towards the Constitution.

Clear and concise, a must for all economic history scholars.
Beard's origional thesis form 1913 remains that the forming of the United States Constitution was an effort by the economic well-to-do of the newly formed American social class to establish a government that would protect their interests and raise the value of the government's obligations in their possessions. Beard's goal is simply to re-establish the idea of the aforementioned economic interests as the primary, not secondary cause of the U. S. Constitution. Through a topical analysis of interests, that seem contrary to the work of his historical mentors, Beard weaves his interpretation of the economic history. Throughout his book Beard consistantly refers to his work as fragmentary, but it appears extensively researched through primary documents such as the Federalist Papers, early Treasury Department records, and Madison's convension notes. Beard does an excellent job in presenting all necessary facts for the reader to follow his argument. Little, if any information is left to the supposition of the reader. Whereas the work can be dry at times, it does provide scholars with alternative, not necessarily new, interpretations of early American historical events.

Brilliant -- upheld by recent scholarship
Charles Beard's thesis held sway for decades --and was not attacked in a significant way until after his death in 1948. Major critics were Robert E. Brown (1956) and Forrest McDonald (1958). It should be noted that Charles Beard greatly angered the liberal Establishment in the 1940s with his strong criticism re how Franklin Roosevelt manipulated the US into World War II and provoked the Japanese to attack Pearl Harbor.

A new book due out in July 2002 -- Robert McGuire's "To Form A More Perfect Union: A New Economic Interpretation of the United States Constitution" will supposedly show that Beard was right re the Founding Fathers/Constitution and his critics were wrong.

Factual account of the X-1 program
This book is an outstanding account of the bureaucratic goings on in the development and test flying of the X-1 (XS-1). It is not an easy book to read, nor particularly enjoyable, unless your needs include a very in-depth and tedious account of the meetings, memos, and political struggles between agencies in the XS-1 program. Light reading, it is definitely not.

X-1 Story covers Adminstrative and Technical struggle
This book covers the struggle between the Army/Air Force, Bell Manufacturing and the NACA (predecessor of NASA) in the creation of the X-1, the first plane to break the sound barrier. It is a marvellous story of the engineering decisions made not by any one of those agencies, but in cooperation with all of them. For one who wants to learn why Edwards Air Force Base was chosen over the Florida base to test the new development planes, or why the civilian pilot in charge of testing was replaced by Chuck Yeager in the latter stages of testing the X-1, or why NACA was at such odds with the other entities over test procedures/schedules, and the existence of the various X-1 'copies' and who owned and tested them ... the answers are here.

Learn a little about the D-558-I, which used a jet propulsion engine which is the mother of our modern jet aircraft (the X-1 used rocket power, not jet power). Why do our modern military fighters use a jet engine, not a rocket engine for propulsion ?

The accidents and near accidents, including fires, loss of pressurization, flight instability, and such are discussed with an analysis of what might have caused them, and steps taken to prevent reoccurences.

The book covers in fine detail the technical issues involved in designing and building the planes. The administration of the entire program is spelled out with names and memos which brings to life the heated arguments and disagreements arising in building a machine many thought was merely a death machine, sure to kill every pilot who attempted to break the barrier.

Of lasting impression on me, was the realization that the designers, manufacturers, and pilot testers of these planes were in their twenties. The head of the NACA team in charge of the X-1 project (for NACA) was 29 years old (or so). Those working for him were even younger. Of particular interest to me is the role of my father (John Gardner) who was part of the NACA team. He was 25 years old in 1947. Their counterparts at Bell were of similiar age.

The week I bought this book I was visiting Edwards AFB. I got a chance to tour the base, experiencing the climate 51 years to the day since the sound barrier was broken, and view the surrounding terrain and landscape. It certainly added to my interest in reading the book.

Principles of Damnation
If you want to know how NOT to enter heaven, read this book. Finney was a heretic who denied the cardinal doctrine of the Reformation: Justification by faith alone. Regardless of what you've read and heard about him and his revivalistic ministeries, his theology was unbiblical and completely unorthodox. Read something more worthwhile.

Completely Practical and Understanding
This book will not give a religious view of salvation, but a true biblical view of what salvation IS and what it is NOT. This book will prove to you that once you "get saved", you are not necessarily always going to be saved--it all depends on your views of sin. Do you have a worldly view of sin, or do you see sin as God does? This book will set you straight. As you read it, you may think it strict! Yeah, but Glory to God in the Highest, this book may very well be a catalyst in changing your mind on some things and in the end, saving your soul and your spirit from death! An awesome book from an awesome evangelist. All of his works should be read by those who have a serious desire to know what religion has been falsely preaching. I praise God for giving Charles Finney such a profound view of Christianity and the Body of Christ. If you think you have a calling on your life, please do yourself a great big favor and read this book! You will be very glad you did!!!

Les trois mousquetaires
Published in Unknown Binding by Larousse ()
Author: Alexandre Dumas
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

5 stars for Dumas, 1 for the adaptation, average of 3 stars
This is not Les Trois Mousquetaires of Alexandre Dumas; it is "adapted in simple French by R. de Roussy de Sales." It includes marginal notes, usually not on the most challenging vocabulary in the paragraph, and a set of writing exercises in English in the back.

However, this is a good adaptation, if you are looking for something to challenge rusty French skills.

Dumas' characters and action are exciting and compellingly drawn, and the boundary between history and fiction is blurred enough to make Dumas' version the more persuasive.

This is still a terrific story.

The Mistake of Offering Only an E-Book
I want to express my disgust at the decision to offer this only as an e-book. The editors should read the books they are recommending. Customers want a choice. I prefer to take nutrition by enjoying a wonderful tasting meal, not through a tube. And, I prefer a book, bound, and in my hands, not some data stream that forces me to waste time at my computer doing the tasks of downloading and printing. Until the authors wake up, I'll read others' books. If they do wake up let me know. The material looks interesting.

not worth it?!
I just downloaded the PDF and are already questioning my decision to buy this eBook. Obviously I had no chance to read everything before writing this review and my opinion about this ebook might change for the better, but I doubt it. The reason why I can be so certain about this is, that this book is awefully short (only 49 pages) and therefore, scratches only the surface of most books. I would like to have a little bit more on each book, but maybe I am just a little annoyed that I paid over $$$ that is not even printed.

Now, to some this might be a benefit (and I would see it as such too) if it wasn't for the fact that the layout of this ebook is clearly created for print. For example: the layout is layouted in two columns requiring you to constantly scroll up and down and it doesn't even uses the most simplest features of Adobe Acrobat like creating bookmarks, which would allow easier navigation between the sections.

Given, that the publisher didn't have to fork out the money for the print, I think it is absolutely reasonable for me to expect a presentation of the content that is suitable to the medium, or, that I am not going to be charged an amount that I would not be charged if the information was printed on paper.

I still think that the underlying idea of this book is good and I hopefully will end up buying some great books that I otherwise might not have read. So, I am not sure if it is worth it, but since there was no reader review on this I felt compelled to give you at least my 5 cents of wisdom.

Great overview of business books
If you're a fanatic business book reader as I am, this is a great overview of business books across every area ranging from history to biography to strategy and leadership.
I ordered it, got it delivered digitally same day and printed it out to take home and read on vacation the next week.

Great book, great technology, great price!

Ghost stories.
This is some of the most famous stories that he has gathered. Famous writers like Poe, Dickens and Wilde... In my oppinion this book is just as many others of this sort. They have the almost the same stories in every book. And after some of them you get pretty tired of them. I didn't like it at all, but i Know that some of you will.

Thin volume disappoints, doesn't match description
Disappointing. In reality this "book" is little more than a catalog for the large Klemantaski collection of photos. Not only is it a very thin volume, but it's small too - only about 5"x7". The selection of pictures is very good and the reproduction is better than average. Text is minimal, with only a 1- or 2-sentence caption per picture. It's really too bad, because Klem's body of work is generally outstanding.

Louis L'amour should stay away from cheap romance
I have loved L'amour since I was a child, it's family history really but this book is a sad example of his work. The words were corny and sappy and the plot fairly predictable. The end left much to be desired. For an excellent book try: Grub Line Rider or the Chick Bowdrie series
