A Brilliant Review
This book was a very good book. It tells most of the things you need to know about Mark Twain, and it tells them in an interesting way. The only problem with using this book to write a report about Mark Twain's life is that it doesn't include some things that you might need to know. For example, it doesn't say the school he went to (which was John Dawson school). It also doesn't say too much about his children or wife. But it does tell a lot of good details, even little ones, about his life. I think this is a good book if you want to learn about Mark Twain or write a report about him.

Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Great book; better illustrations.
The story of Alice in Wonderland is repeated in a very readable text and is as delightful as ever. This is not, however, a childrens' book. Barry Moser's illustrations tell the story of Alice in a different, dark and somewhat menacing way. Is the rabbit hole just the means to reach an amusing world of people and animals with strange names and stranger habits, or is it the path to a nether region where the normal rules of social conduct and the shape and size of "people" don't apply? If his illustrations mean anything, Moser thinks perhaps it is the latter. For example, the Queen of Hearts appears not as the crazy, but ultimately harmless, creature of a Disney movie. Moser shows her as a dark and foreboding character and by his illustartion suggests that "off with her head" is a real threat. The text of the book is standard Alice, but the real reason to buy it is to get Moser's illustrations. This is definitely not a book for 10 year olds. But those of us who grew up on Alice as half comedy, half light hearted spoof will enjoy this twist on a traditional tale. Moser's other illustrations of classical works such as Moby Dick and The Devine Comedy are also well worth acquiring.

A collaboration between Barry Moser and his granddaughter!
I admit right up front to being a complete sucker for Barry Moser's astonishing artwork, so you can imagine my delight when I found that Moser had not only illustrated "Our New Puppy," but that he had collaborated on it with his granddaughter, Isabelle Harper!

"Our New Puppy" doesn't have much in the way of plot--will the new puppy be accepted or not by the older dog?--but what it lacks in fascinating events it more than makes up for in the way of gorgeous, glowing illustrations. I don't know for certain, but I feel that Moser must work from photographs--the illustrations have a nearly photographic quality to them with all the best elements of that art form and none of the worst. He does an especially fine job at giving the sundry cats and dogs in the book subtly evocative expressions of their own, and the little girls (Isabelle and Eliza) are rendered with the warmth only a loving grandfather could muster. This is a wonderful treat for anyone bringing a new pet into a home that already had pets, and it's a must for Barry Moser fans.

Challenging the Norm in Puritannical America
I'm sure most of you have heard of the book by Nathaniel Hawthorne, "The Scarlet Letter". Hawthorne weaves a tale of hardship, struggle, and victory as we follow the life of Hester Prynne, a woman who has had a child out of wedlock, whom she names Pearl. She is shunned from the community, refuses to confess the identity of Pearl's father, and is forced to wear a letter "A" on her dress, the symbol for adultery. Fighting against the stifling and hypocritical ways of Puritan life, Hester rebels in her own way, first by embellishing her letter with fine embroidery. This book gives us a look at what it is like to live in Puritan America from not just a woman's point of view, but a so-called "sinner's" point of view as well. As we read this book, we come to see how the letter becomes a symbol of strength and freedom for Hester, in a fight against facades of piety and hypocrisy. A very good novel, and Hawthorne does a wonderful job in the portrayal of his characters. Another little known fact, Hawthorne's grandfather was a judge at the Salem witch trials and Nathaniel was so embarassed by the affiliation, that he changed the spelling of his last name to distance himself from his grandfather and what he stood for. A very good novel, definitely something that everyone should read. Besides, don't you want to know the identity of Hester's lover? Go and read this book!

Whistling Dixie

Not your typical heroes or villains...
You'd be hard up to find another story where heroes like swamp gators face villains like the churn-turners. In this tale--laden with imagination and humor--Dixie has found some not-too-popular critters to bring home. Her mother and Grandpappy don't exactly welcome them! However, a little Southern mythology comes to life in this tale when the un-welcome visitors save the day. Even Grandpappy couldn't complain when he saw how the squirmy snake saved his chompers from the bogeyman!

lame
i have a deep appreciation for fine literature and unfortunately this just isn't it. the themes were obvious and irritating. i found it superficial and thoroughly uninteresting. None of the characters were fully developed and although extremely short, i found it difficult to complete it.

Simple (yet endearing) adult fairy tale
In her first piece of full-length fiction (more of a novella than a novel), Eudora Welty has taken a Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the same title, set it along the Natchez Trace in Mississippi, added a couple of legendary Southern outlaws (including the notorious Harp Brothers, one of whom is represented only by his severed head), and stirred in a good measure of Southern humor. The result is a wickedly funny (if slight) adult fantasy, complete with the usual cast: a beautiful young girl, a stepmother, and a good number of Disneyesque dimwits. There are no hidden meanings or surprise plot twists--this is just a fanciful yarn cleverly told with great wit and style.

Astonishing
This lovely novella introduced Eudora Welty to the world. Now it can introduce you to Eudora Welty. A raucous, genre-bending mixture of historical fiction, romance novel, and tall tale -- all shot through with the compassion and psychological subtlety for which Welty would become famous -- _The Robber Bridegroom_ still holds a place of honor in Southern literature.

Not Very Interesting
This book really needs improvment. I mean, the story has absolutely NO action! It is about three kids, Monk, Scho, and Glennie playing a game of catch, and then Scho all of a sudden, starts acting silly and stupid and said that he controled Monk and Glennie and made them do whatever he wanted them to do. So they that made Monk came up the branches to where Scho was, and pushed him off the apple tree.

I can't really recommend this book to anyone because adults will think that this book is boring and kids won't understand the GIANT, BIG long words that are in this book. So what I am basically saying is, don't buy this book!

Thank you very much. Your time is appreciated!

The ambiguity and paradox of adolescent relationships
A brilliant short story of the ambiguity and paradox of adolescent relationships. Although ostensibly describing a situation as mundane as two boys consumed in a mindless game of catch when a third, gloveless boy appears, the depth of character of all three boys is richly and adeptly developed . Charater motivation is as complex and confusing to each of the three boys portrayed as it is for the reader. This brief story displays powerful insight into human behavior in breathtakingly few words

Those Building Men Book Review
"Those Building Men", portrays a story of the structural foundations that our ancestors helped create through their toils in labor. This book tells the story of the men who built the roads, bridges, railways, canals, and skyscrapers to shape America.
"Those Building Men" associates the reader with a story of praise, and contribution toward our fathers, and the work they put into building our nation. The illustrations of this book capture the image of hard-working men of all different races, ages, and classes working together for one common goal, as well as portraying the painstaking labors that our fathers endured to build our country. The illustrator uses a gray, brown, and blue watercolor design to illustrate the different landscapes. He also uses hard chiseled shapes to form the designs of the workers and backgrounds. This book cleverly reminds us of the history of how our nation was built, and prompts us to consider how fortunate we really are. This book sheds light on a way to communicate to future generations the importance of an almost-fading past.
