Excellent textbook for independent study
I home educate my 12-year-old son, so I need a textbook that gives clear explanations, includes plenty of worked examples, and provides answers to the exercises so I can check his work. This textbook is brilliantly clear and perfectly suited to independent study. Answers are provided for odd-numbered exercises only, but there are so many exercises at the end of each chapter that this has never been a problem for us: we just do all the odd-numbered exercises. Each chapter also has a chapter test and a set of cumulative review exercises at the end, for which answers to ALL of the problems are provided. This is an extremely useful feature for home educators. At the end of the book there is a cumulative test of the whole book, for which answers to every problem are provided, so you can do a thorough review with no uncertainty about marking. You could also use the final test as a pre-test to determine what areas you need to work on, if you're trying to fill in gaps from an unsuccessful school course. I only wish we could find textbooks of this quality for our other subjects!

Best Math Textbook ever!
This is the most beautiful math textbook I've ever seen. To each chapter there are many examples that show clearly what is covered. In the problem solving questions, some are based on real life. The only little problem is that the answers at the back to the exercises are odd-numbered! I use it as a homework textbook for a math programme and I NEVER get stuck on it!

Not all good...
I agree with some of the comments of the other reviewers: the book seems comprehensive and is very attractively laid out. However I am attempting to read the book on my own, not as the textbook to a course, and I am finding that it is quite badly organized. For instance, the first chapter rushes through a whole lot of stuff which is presumably covered in more detail later in the book, but they don't really tell you that, nor do they simplify it as they should if it's just an overview. In later chapters, several terms are used without being defined, and often it's impossible to tell what's going on in the figures from the captions and the text. I can imagine the book being good if you're taking a genetics course, but if you're just trying to read it and teach yourself, be prepared to be often confused...

Excellent genetics textbook and reference
I've used this book quite extensively in my introductory Genetics class, and I'm sure I'll be using it often as a reference in the future. It is superbly written, with clear explanations of the material.

There are many, many diagrams and photographs which help to solidify understanding, and they are all in full color. It is organized very well, although this organization has changed from edition to edition and any teacher or student using it in their courses should be aware that chapters and problems in this newer version do not always coincide with those in previous editions. The questions are excellent as well, although purchasing the solutions manual is a wise idea (it is also very well done, with long, detailed explanations of the answers to the problems).

Overall, of the 3 or 4 genetics textbooks I've looked at, this is by far the best one. In fact, it's one of the best textbooks I've ever used for any class. This one's a keeper.

Superb
I work in a Mammalian Genetics lab, I have referenced this book numerous times and I have only had it a little over a month. It is those little things we forget, but now that information is at my fingertips. Excellent, would recommend it to anyone in the field.

A Small Complete Reference Guide
This small book is a very good guide to modern and some old tanks but it can be more oriented towards the more acknowledgeable reader. It is a good book for people who now little or some about tanks but has too little information for someone who has considerable knowledge about tanks. This book has great pictures, specifications, armourment, and other small facts as well as some development history. I would highly reccommend this book to anyone who likes to raed about modern day tanks. This book doesn't include much on experimental tanks though.

A must for the armor buff!!
An excellent example of how small reference material should be written. Anyone with any interest in armored vehicles would do very well to have this book at hand. David Miller has well earned his place in the lists of good military equipment authors along with Ian Hogg and Kenneth Macksey. The book even covers the lesser known prototypes like the MBT-70 and the German pre-war experimental models. I only wish this easy to read and well researched style would be copied more often.

Excellent value for money!
This is not the best reference book on tanks, but it is absolutely the best reference you'll find for under ten dollars! It is a small format, a bit larger than a paperback dictionary, but the book contains an amazing amount of information, and most illustrations are in color. If you want coverage of famous vehicles, like the Sherman tank, or the T-34, or the M1 Abrams, there are better specialty publications. But for obscure vehicles, this book is excellent. It helps decipher the myriad of new tank designs now coming out of China and the states that once made up the Soviet Union. It also gives coverage of hard to find historical subjects like Polish, French, and Italian armor in 1939-40. Think of it as an ilustrated tank dictionary.

Must reading for those serious about saving our republic.
This book is 'required reading' for anyone who gives serious thought to and is deeply concerned by the crisis facing our country in the form of our corrupting system of financing political campaigns. The authors have been 'in the trenches' for some time in the battle to restore sense and balance to our country's political arena. The format in which the authors outline their proposal, then solicit replies from different perspectives, then finally retort and rebuke most other potential solutions, provides the reader with a blueprint for debate. Since there is no longer any meaningful argument in favor of the current political financing system, this book proceeds in the logical direction of focusing the debate on the most likely remedies. Now if only the general public would realize that, until campaign finance reform is a reality, the other great issues of our time cannot be solved. My only reservation regarding the author's work is the lack of specific examples which the more casual reader may need to understand the gravity of the issue. Nonetheless, the book is highly reccomended.

Money In Politics? The Solution Is Here
An excellent little pamphlet summarizing a number of interesting solutions to our current highly flawed campaign system. Not only do Fine, Miller and Donnelly offer a compelling solution that has already proven effective at the state level, they also allow their critics to rebut their arguments in the book, this is rare indeed, and welcome. Rarely do you see a volume so evenly discuss and represent contrary and conflicting viewpoints so well. It is certainly food for thought, and will provide even those opposed to the Fine/Miller/Donnelly solution with interesting reading. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in contemporary politics, but especially those who feel that money has distorted or destroyed the American system. Highly recommended.

An excellent debate on the various reform proposals
We all know that there is money in politics, but we don't know how to get it out. This book provides an excellent debate on the various options, ranging from full public financing to vouchers to a constitutional amendment to allow limits on campaign contribution levels. In spite of the good arguments made by the debaters, the authors are right on target.

Of the two ways to fund elections, public vs. private money, full public funding presents the most reasonable. Perhaps a more detailed discussion about the incredibly low cost to taxpayers ($10 per year per taxpayer at the federal level, and $5 at the state level), would have better satisfied the debaters. Contrasting that with the $500 to $1500 per year taxpayers are now paying through the hidden-tax system, taxpayer funded elections are a real bargain.

This is a must-read for all campaign reformers, term limiters, anti-taxers and government reducers. Too few Americans realize that by getting private money out of politics, we'll reduce the unnecessary government spending that causes high taxes, reduce the size of government, and eliminate the need for term limits. This book shows how to accomplish this goal.

The New Polytheism

Insightful and poetic
I first discovered this book 12 years ago, while writing a formal credo for a religion class in college, and I found the book invaluable. I had to fight the urge to quote whole pages at a time. Not only did Mr. Miller explain the complexities of a polytheist-centered world-view clearly, but he did so with a poet's light touch. The only regret I had at the time, and have now, is that I was reading the book with a deadline hanging over my head, and could not luxuriate in his writing as much as I wanted (it is only this fact that makes me uncomfortable giving the book a perfect "5 star" rating).

It is a great sorrow that this book is out of print... But perhaps it will be reissued one day.

For Christians with Poletheistic Souls !!
It is a pity that this quartet of David Miller's books: The New Polytheism, Christs, Three Faces of God and Hells and Holy Ghosts are out of print. They are simply brilliant examples of Archetypal Psychology's eye (that is, a polytheistic, mythopoeic, psyche-logical eye) turned on the beliefs of a montheistic faith. Not possible you think ? It is absolutely necessary I think, necessary to turn the two Doctors of the Soul (Jung and Hillman's) eyes on a faith whose soul has been long missing. For those Christians who have experienced the polytheism of their own soul and are seeking to integrate this experience into their faith these books are tailor made. I don't know of any other books that have attempted to do what David Miller has done. His accessible style in explaining complex notions is at least equal to that of Thomas Moore (of Care of the Soul fame).

Wonderfully thought-provoking!
_The New Polytheism_ is a treasure. It's the kind of book I've been longing to find: an intelligent, scholarly and thought-provoking treatise on polytheistic ways of thinking and creating meaning in the modern world. This is a must-read for modern polytheists and Neo-Pagans who hunger for something more substantial than the all-too-prevalent shallow, academically- and theologically-challenged fluff that seems to permeate Western polytheistic communities these days. I especially appreciated the commentary on the experience of polytheism as at first a frightening loss of center, but then a widening of perspective that challenges, inspires and invigorates as one begins to appreciate the diversity and richness of multiple ways of relating and functioning in many different aspects of life. I would love to be part of a group book study using this book.

Get ready to host a funky party!
This book is quite clever and has some really cool party ideas. The book provides invitation, recipe, craft and game ideas for each of the 12 themes. While I think the themes are fun & very cool, they are really geared more towards the gay crowd. I enjoyed the book but gave it to my gay friends -- they are having much more fun with it than I did!

Such Fun!
No one knows how to throw a party quite like Todd Merrell. I am a heterosexual female, and my friends and I have had an amazing amount of fun with the innovative ideas in this "fabulous" book! I had the remarkable opportunity to meet Mr. Merrell after reading this book and having several parties themed around ideas in the book, and I must say, he is the epitome of a great host. I believe any host can get enough creative ideas from this book to make it pay for itself ten fold!

How to have a blast with (most) of your clothes on!
From an intimate Valentine's Day party for two to a all-out throw down, invite the town Breakfast at Tiffany's cocktail party this book has it all for the fabulous host. Although, some of the touches may seem over the top--mini-closet invitations for a "coming out" party--to the not so crafty. This book also contains a good deal of straightforward party planning wisdom (e.g. you can never have too much ice!) that is helpful whether you are starting from scratch or a seasoned entertainer. Party Fabulous is a great book for jumpstarting the creative juices when you are getting ready to throw your next bash!

Exceptionally helpful
While the previous reviewer is correct, that Strauss's "history of political philosophy" is more in-depth, one benefit of this book is its lack of a Straussian angle. Not that Strauss's views are bad or wrong, but it is a bias.

This work's sheer amount of entries is very useful. While some articles are somewhat brief, it is a good starting point for students of political philosophy. Done by among the best minds in the field, any political philosopher who wants to have a handy reference to terms and authors should order a copy of this book.

Very useful book
Very useful book for the students of political philosophy, together with Strauss' _History of Political Philosophy_, which is richer in content (but less entries). (^^;

A great resource for the Beginning All Grain Brewer
This is one of my favorite of the classic Beer Styles Series. It is one of the shortest and Most concise, Miller doesn't go into a lot of history and obsecure style disscussion here, nor does he get too technical. What he does do is present the basics, and he does it all in a non-threating, easy to read style. This is a great resource for Pilsner Fans

This is why I can brew a good pilsner
Miller is a master at simplifying complex procedures. I recommend this book for good tips in brewing ANY variety of lager beer, not just pils. My pilsners are my best beers, due to this book and Noonan's New Brewing Lager Beer.

Are there any other books about beermaking ?
Today I am brewing beer, because eight yaers ago I read Dave's book. This tome got me started quickly and successfully into the fine art of brewing. In reading only the first two chapters, I had begun my first batch, and I have refered to it ever since. I have read many books on brewing, but I always rely on this one when I need to go back to the basics or cure a problem. Whether you have brewed a thousand batches, or are contemplating your first, I highly recommend this book.

First-rate, in-depth study of brewing
~Miller has written a book that covers ALOT of info about brewing and the science thereof. For anyone weaned on Pappazian's books, this is the next logical step. Every aspect of the science of brewing beer is covered.~ sometimes funny style, but that doesn't detract from the excellent layout of this book, which leads from simple partial-mash brewing to all-grain mashing via a logical and step-by step progression of ideas and metho

A beer brewing book for the serious home brewer
I own four beer brewing books. Three of them are inadequate, inaccurate and cater to brewers who take the short-cut of extract brewing - one would actually be better off without them. Dave Miller's book is the fourth and indispensable one. It describes in detail the equipment, ingredients, science, procedures and recipes. Although Dave Miller prefers, as he should, to take the brewer down the path of mashing, the extract brewer can by-pass these steps and still follow a sub-set of the book's directions and recipes. There is enough theory which can either be read in detail or in conclusion to make the home brewer understand what he/she is doing or should have been doing. The recipes are more than enough for a life-time of brewing and cater to both ale and lager lovers, English ale addicts or German beer buffs. And if 55 recipes are not enough, then the book provides base information and calculation tables for recipe development without having to shoot in the dark.
There may be other good brewing books available, but if you were to have only one beer brewing book, this could be the one. It takes you from being a mere amateur to being a real microbrewer.
