A witty novel of the 1920's upper classes at play/in troubl
A well written and amusing story. The heroine's madcap flapper life comes to an abrupt end when her father suddenly dies and she finds herself in charge of his international shipping line. Money, power, sex, love, big business, villainy, rape, disillusion and MORE! I found it charming, and I laughed out loud several times.

Good pace, but the ending is what hits you.
This is a good book that moves along telling the tale of what happens when a deadly virus is unleashed on the unsuspecting public. Even during a time of turmoil, personalities clash and egos threaten to destroy the only chance we have of beating this disease. The clincher is the ending though. It really hits home and makes you think, or shudder.

A good read for lovers of short horror stories.
Scare Care is worth buying simply because the intent of the editor, Graham Masterton, in compiling these stories was to help children in desperate need. However, Scare Care also stands on it's own feet as a genuinely good read for those of us who love this genre. Mommy, the first story in the book, is more of a feel good horror story than truly frightening, but springs from a very interesting concept nevertheless. You might, as I did, find a lump in your throat after reading Things Not Seen, and The Avenger of Death asked interesting questions about man's ability to mete out "justice". There were one or two stories included, such as Manny Agonistes and Changeling, which have been seen elsewhere and were more than worthy of a second, third or fourth read. (And) of course there were the usual stories which, while the endings were rather obvious, still make for an entertaining half hour before you turn out your light!

Several stories found their way into this book which we all really could have lived without, but what would a short story compilation be without a few clangers?

My recommendation - as an avid lover of short horror fiction - is; buy the book, be entertained but don't expect miracles.

Heat Up Your Bedroom
I surprised my wife by reading a few passages aloud one night. She seemed a bit aloof a first, but as I read more and more she could no longer hide her arousal and we were soon entwined for a rather long lovemaking session. We have used many of the techniques in this book to spice up our love life! She has even tried a few things she had shied away from before. Hearing what other women found enjoyable has opened her mind and body!

If you have an open mind and are not offended by frank explicit discussions this book is for you and your lover!

good variety of scenarios that really will work
Although it seems a bit hokey and far-fetched at times, it is a must read for women I have been involved with for any length of time. While the scenarios sometimes seem awkward or unusual, they are definitely what men do desire. Girls, if you want to know how to keep your physical relationships firm, read this book. While no guy will neccessarily want to try everything in this book, the ones he does will drive him nuts. There is certainly a wide variety to choose from. It would have got 5-stars if it had been been better written and not quite so dated, but the techniques are timeless. Enjoy!

Don't let the name or cover fool you!
When I first saw this book I was amused, but doubted that I would find any really good horror inside. The first two stories were pretty dreadful, and not in a good way. But once I start a book, I can't put it down so I kept reading. I'm glad that I did.

Once you get past the first few stories, this book is full of some very good horror stories that just happen to involve the White House or the office of President. But the stories themselves are well crafted and terrifying. Some of the best are:

Night of the Vegetables by Edward Lee- this story was so funny that I was laughing out loud. Not a very scary story, but great, nonetheless.

Creature Congress by Terry Beatty and Wendi Lee- Do not pass up this story! It has some great dialog and is good horrific fun.

Jack Be Quick by Graham Masterson is go good and spooky that it is now one of my favorite horror stories of all time. One of the best and most original takes on the JFK assassination that I have ever read.

This anthology contains 16 short stories by a wide range of authors. So if you're looking for a smart, fun horror anthology, give White House Horrors a try. You won't be disappointed.

Helping to overcome shyness in the bedroom.
This book gave me tactful and loving ways to ask my husband to be more adventurous in our lovemaking. It has helped me to help him overcome his shyness and timidness in the bedroom while igniting passion and tenderness we never knew was possible.

Disappointed
I was looking for a "how-to" book that would describe techniques & give me a deeper understanding of what men want - "totally". This book discribed experiences of various couples. However, the language was coarse & it seemed the writer was trying to "titillate" rather than inform. There few specifics & it felt as though I were "reading" a dirty movie.

Dear Penthouse. . .
More fantasy than helpful. It kind of reminded me of the type of letters you might find in Penthouse or one of those other magazines. Not helpful for a woman who is looking for some concrete ideas.

Turned me on in more ways than one
After almost 20 yrs of marriage,I've read my share of marriage manuals, but there are only a few I fondly remember. This is one of them, and unlike most readers who were offended by the course and often explicit language, I found the candid revelations to be, not only a physical turn on, but an intellectual, even spiritual one as well. By "turn on," I mean, like someone turned on a light inside me by allowing me to see that even the most unique sex done in the sanctity of marriage is a heady, beautiful and intimate thing that not only brings mutual pleasure, but enhances intimacy, communication, and closeness. This type of book is not for everyone, and if you easily offend, I'd say stick with books that are more medical or technical. But, if you can handle it, you'll find yourself anxious to put in to application what you read!

Amateur League
Trust me, you already know these "great" secrets! This is geared toward women who have no self-confidence, and also no sense of adventure. I am NOT an expierenced woman, but any woman with a bit of logic would know these secrets; dressing sexy, teasing, being confident in bed. There is nothing new to learn here.

GREAT BOOK FOR TERRIFIC SEX
I bought this book after I read the customer review section. Good thing I didn't listen to the other reader, who rates this book low. This is an EXCELLENT book, which I recommend to all women. I thought I pretty much knew everything when it came to sex and pleasing my lover, but this book taught me soooooooo much more.

Sex can be soft and romantic. It can be down and dirty. Or it can be wickedly fun. Sex can be whatever you want it to be. Here in the pages of this uninhibited guide are the secrets to exploring your deepest sexual feelings and unleashing your most torrid desires. Real women share candid stories of how these seven secrets transformed their love lives. You'll learn how thinking sexy, dressing sexy, and playing sexy can ignite the passion of any man you want or arouse the one you already have.

This wonderful book is a MUST READ for every adult male and female. This book was phenomenal. It lifts the lid on how to turn your mate on. The actual anecdotes are outstanding and give a sense of what a good wholesome sexual happening each person can experience, if they are wiling to take the time and initiative to make it happen. I am very pleased I bought this book and happy I read it because my lover is now more satisfied than ever before. I would give it 10 STARS if I could!

A Terrible Beauty

Not bad at all
Creepy! A bit gory! Fun! Yeap, it's all of these.

If there weren't a few glaring inconsistencies, this book would've garnered 4 stars. The first (and most screamingly obvious) is very early - we're first told the main character has been married for 7 years ("when she'd married him 7 and half years ago"), then a few pages later the same character remembers her wedding and honeymoon, FOUR years ago. Sure, it's possible (but not plausible) that the honeymoon happened 3 years later; and really it's only a minor niggling point. If you can get past that, there's a strong chance you'll enjoy the rest of it.

Anyway. The story IS creepy - Celtic mythology is a hobby of mine, and this book included intriguing glimpses of both traditional Irish culture and the mythology contained therein. There's a good steady amount of suspense, some graphic scenes of deliberate violence and a hint of sex that makes quite a nice package in all. Unfortunately, I'd figured out the bad guy by about halfway through, and I'm certainly not a genius...there's also a subplot involving the main character's spouse that seems to have no purpose other than to flesh out (pun intended) the main storyline. There are a couple of technical and historical inaccuracies too, which do detract from the credibility a little.

All in all, it's not Masterton's best offer, but it's certainly not his worst, and it's a fun read that'll occupy you for a couple of hours.

3.1/2 stars out of 5 :)

Not THAT impressive...
I wasn't very impressed with this book and that surprised me, as Graham Masterton seems to be a highly recommended author. The only real character development was the main character's daily attire and there were some holes and weak spots in the plot. The book did give me the heebie-jeebies though, so I'll give it a couple of stars for that.

Has it share of creepy moments....but
I enjoyed the story, Masterton is a great underated writer
and has so many great stories under his belt. He has a way
with getting under your skin and this book had many moments
that gave me some uncomfortable chills as I read late at night
before bed, but thats the best time to read Masterton, just
before you dream...
I felt the story spread itself out more than it needed to with
so many characters
but all in all it was a quick, fast paced read with mystery
and horror and I loved the whole Irish setting and folklore.
