Excellent pre and post retirement planning information.
This guide provides excellent pre-retirement planning suggestions. Has traps, obstacles and helpers outlined for quick review and advice. Has a number of "tools" in the form of worksheets to assist in planning for both before and after retirement events. Presents a number of post-retirement ideas with several suggestions of how to manage and/or increase your income in retirement. Authors are somewhat short on information for the mid 50's retiree concerning how to access 401k and IRA funds without penalty between 55 and 59 1/2. No info on what forms are needed and where they are available, or what needs to be filed and where. Has one slight reference in the appendix on how to accomplish withdrawals without penalty. Having read a number of retirement planning books available on the bookshelf, I found this volume excels in providing useful information not found in similar guide books.

The best calculator I've found for financial planning...
Although this book deals with many aspects of retirement and retirement planning, what distinguishes it from the dozens of similar books I have read is a truly outstanding calculator for determining how much money will be available then and how much needs to be saved or invested to eliminate any shortfall. It includes pensions, social security, and savings and investments. It factors in life expectancy, income sources that will automatically increase with inflation and those that won't, savings and investment growth rates, withdrawl rates that must increase with inflation(which--unbelievably--some calculators don't consider). It allows for early retirement (that is, it doesn't factor in social security until it's available). Similarly, it allows for staggered commencement of retirement income sources (for example, a pension that starts at age 65 while you may start social security at age 62). I've not found another calculator that does ALL of these things! I couldn't recommend it more highly.

Excellent, comprehensive, easy to read, useful tips
This guide really lays out, step by step, how to think and act to plan your retirement. I found this a surprisingly quick read, comprehensive, easy to understand and specific -- from spending, lifestyle, insurance, investing issues. The book makes a great gift for friends or parents because too many of us are not paying attention to the easy "Action Items" that each chapter ends with. Highly recommended!

Very informative, didn't want to put it down
After picking this book up at a Sam's club out of curiosity I found that I couldn't put it down and ended up putting it in the cart. My companion is a begining Astronomy buff and he couldn't get enough eighther. We were reading it to each other and trying to read it at the same time. We have learned alot from this book and have put it to good use with his new telescope. I highly remommed this book to the person who has always wanted to get started in astronomy!

A Best Buy - But Beware! It's a Repeat
This beautifully produced book is a superb addition to the library of any backyard astronomer or anyone from eight to eighty. It's a best buy for several reasons.
The first is its outstanding quality. The second is the BEWARE!.
This book is actually a softcover, otherwise identical reprint of "Advanced Skywatching", ISBN: 0783549415, published in 1997, also by Time-Life.
Perhaps Time-Life used this subterfuge to catch unwary on-line shoppers that already own "Advanced Skywatching" (as I do), since you can't view the contents on-line to discover you already own the same book under a different name.

The complaint on the star charts about this book (or its twin) not covering the entire sky is not critical.
There isn't room on anyone's bookshelf for all the possible fun sky-hops, of which this book and its twin present abundant excellent examples. There are more and different, also challenging and instructive ones in another fine volume, "Turn Left at Orion", and many others.

Not to worry if you get sucked in. This one makes a fine gift for your favorite grandchild as mine will.
Add this to your "must have" list if you don't already own its twin. If you do, buy it anyhow and give it to someone special.
The price is astonishingly low for the fine content.

Great Book to Begin Learning
This is a great book to get get a background on the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950's and 60's. I read it when I began trying to learn about the CRM and some of the key players.

A valued companion to the study of the Civil Rights Movement
I think that this book is a valued companion to Taylor Branch's epic work "Parting the Waters". Together, they make an unbeatable pair of study aids for one of America's most turbulent periods.

While P.T.W. is a more dispassionate third person chronicle, E.O.T.P. is more personally driven. It brings to life individuals like Bayard Rustin, Stokley Carmichael, John Lewis and other giants (known and obscure) of the movement. Events from the Till lynching to the Attica riots as seen through the eyes of those on the scene (sometimes, those making the scene).

Fascinating reading.

A FINE VIROLOGY YARDSTICK
There is hardly any significant fact about viruses that missed-out in this edition of "Fields Virology". Page after page, this sound all-inclusive reference doles out authoritative information on both viruses and viral syndromes. From taxonomy to etiology, metamorphosis to replication; the analyses of this text is grand. The same applies to its attached CD-ROM. Its practical outlook was intended to benefit both microbiologists and pathologists. Bernard Fields and his colleagues made their mark with this book. It is a great effort.
However, most botanist may not be pleased to know that little attention was paid to plant viruses. Again, many potential buyers may be demoralized by the rather high price that this virology-set demands.

Another Bible. Amazing viral world
It covers all fields of virology. Perfect and wonderful ! Easy to understand. I really recommend this book to who is involved in biology

Jewish magical realism
I feel as though I know Karpstein personally. Reading this book, I was struck by the evocative prose and how the story held my interest as it wove a tale of a person that many Jewish Americans would recognize. The book creates a world that is familiar, and yet foreign, as in a dream; it is a synthesis of the monochromatic city (New York?) with its air vents and subways, and that vague sense of being pursued that many Jews feel instinctively (and for good cause), plus supernatural elements that rise from the landscape like subtle delusions.

This novel is a work of Jewish magical realism, in my opinion; does this genre exist?

It is sad, in places, and sometimes angry; but it is not bleak -- the author has even found some room for humor. I recommend it to anyone interested in the Holocaust, in Jewish-American fiction, and in hearing a new voice with something very interesting to say about survivor guilt.

A Hiding Generation
I wept when I followed this man through his hidden passageways. I wept tears of recognition. Karpstein is of my generation and I am of his. We are a generation with a secret pain. Karpstein and I--and millions of others--heard of the holocaust and the pogroms, knew of them, learned about them; all from a great distance. We were afraid and hurt and angry--from a great distance. We were and are frustrated at the horrors we could not do anything about. Thank G-d that most of us chose life. Most of us came out into the sunshine. Karpstein stands for the thousands who were survivors who didn't survive. Karpstein's flight into the darkness serves to remind us of the hiding part of our generation; of those who were eaten by the distant monster. Karpstein Was Hiding is a beautiful river of language that sometimes seems like a long poem. It has been created with a craftsmanship that one seldom sees in modern writing. Once you have read it you will give Karpstein a hiding place inside your own mind.

Insightful
David Martin Jones has explored the nature of the region with great insight and depth. I would certainly recommened this book for anyone with an interest in this fascinating topic

Jones does it again!
Wise-cracking political scientist DMJ has done it again with this lucid account of political development in Pacific Asia. Never afraid to challenge the scholarly establishment, Jones delinks development and democratization in a stunning, revisionist chapter on the dependent nature of the Pacific Asian Noveaux Riches.

A seminal volume, essential reading for anyone serious about Asia. Only one thing - Jones should give up wearing white golf suits!

The need for a new paradigm: intelligent design
The pieces of the puzzle simply don't fit. One doesn't have to go through the subjects of the prebiotic soup, the origins of life, the cambrian explosion, irreducible complexity of molecular machines, the fossil record, micro and macroevolution, the fine-tunning of the universe for life, to make that clear. It is already abundantly clear. That is one of the reasons there should be a place for intelligent design in science. The other, of course, lies in the fact that intelligent design has already presented itself as a viable research paradigm. It is not enough to say, as evolutionary theorists like to say, that, as Dr. David L. Haury puts it, "science has no statement to make beyond the natural world". The problem, though, is that science may be working with a flawed conception of natural world in the first place, by conflating nature with matter. The fact is that information may be a structural and internal part of nature, as it is a structural part of computer "hardware" and "software". It is impossible to deal with computers from a purely naturalistic or materialistic perspective that excludes intelligent design in advance. The same may be true about the "natural world", and science has certainly something to say about that. Naturalist "scientists" may want laugh and scorn of intelligent design. But theirs is a partial, interested and biased laughter, as is the laughter of a Republican towards a campaign finance reform bill proposed by a Democrat. This kind of laughter must not be taken seriously.

up to date, wide range and scientific yet readable book
this book fully covers the subject and gives all the scientific details in depth and up to date. many contributors and many graphics. few personal biases, discussion in a scientific style where other books are narrative / prosaic.

Cambridge Encyclopedia of Human Evolution
Excellent work. In depth treatment of the subject yet accesible to everyone. It covers every imaginable aspect of human evolution by the men and woman that are at the frontiers of this science.

Dream vacations...
Take advantage of the various destinations in this book to plan your next "dream vacation". The photos are spectacular and the descriptions accurate and useful. Based on my experiences at some of the hotels and locales, the authors have captured the true essence of the destinations.

If You Can't Stay At These Hotels....Then Read About Them!
I've stayed at a few of the hotels featured in this book and the authors and of course, the photographers, really capture what these ultra-hip places are about. The photos are very cool. The book is not chock full of PR-speak lingo, but instead some interesting tidbits. It's a great coffee table book.I also like that the book features hotels from all over the world--from Vienna to New York to the UK.

Beautiful review of amazing hotels
This guide, while using members of the Design Hotels chain, also focuses on a variety of fantastic hotels around the world. The guide is a fantastic coffee table book that always entices conversation when entertaining. Beautiful hotels and a georgous guide.

a valuable, easy to read introduction to Gettysburg
This book is a very good introduction to those who want to learn a little about the battle of gettysburg. Written in an easy to read style,it covers just enough detail to whet your appetite for more, or give you confidence to talk a little on the subject: there are 20 or so short digressions intersersed throughout the text which provide a little more biographical detail on key participants, or information about notable incidents. Recommended .

A must for any Civil War buff
A wholly satisfying and occasionally inspired account of one of the pivotal events in American history. Veteran military historian Al Nofi constructs a clear, thoughtful narrative of the entire campaign (concentrating, of course, on the three days of the battle itself). Solidly researched, and the orders of battle are noteworthy for their detail. Also of especial interest are the modules interspersed throughout the book, dealing with individual figures and interesting sidelights (including a speculation on what the battlefield must have smelled like after three days of carnage and camping out!). Nofi's assessments of individual commanders are almost always judicious, although he's rather more charitable to Dan Sickles than most historians. All in all, this is an essential addition to any Civil War historian's bookshelf.

A terrific little book
Want to learn what took place at Gettysburg? Get your hands on this little gem, you won't be dissapointed. Well researched and put together, it contains several footnotes detailing the battle, the Generals, and the soldiers. A must read
