Leckman and book is right on.
I bought this book after I found it mentioned in several posts and chat rooms for Tourette's Syndrome.

James Leckman and his book are held in high regard by the TS community.

If you are looking for an approach to the problem that doesn't involve drugs, look here, it is covered. There are techniques and methods explained, such as Habit Reversal, that have been validated as working for TS; validated over a long time. The method was originated in 1973 by Azrin. ....

Excellent resource to have in your reference library
Even if you work with only one or two children with Tourette's Syndrome, this compilation of over 25 years of research results with a client base of thousands is an excellent resource to have in your reference library. The documentation of multidisciplinary contributions makes it convenient to explore concepts further without having to search through a wide variety of professional journals. Two useful features include the summary of one chapter and preview of the next on the same page and the assessment tools found in the Appendices. The recommended treatment approach focuses on supporting development of the child over time, rather than just eliminating symptoms. A multidisciplinary team of professionals can provide a variety of treatment approaches to address the factors affecting the child at home and at school. Coordination by a flexible, non-doctrinaire clinician, and partnerships with parents and teachers are encouraged. While the authors suggest that the school psychologist fill this role, not all schools have access to one with the necessary perspective on treatment. Instead, the licensed professional social worker is more likely to employ the multidisciplinary, strengths-based, coordinated approach to caring for children with Tourette's Syndrome and related conditions. Contributions from licensed professional social workers would be an asset to the next edition.

This book is an excellent resource
This is one of the best and most comprehensive works on Tourette's Syndrome I've come across. Scientists and/or practitioners working with people who have TS should buy this book. As a psychologist who works with people who have TS, I've found this book to be my best resource on the subject.

Very informative book
I am a former Russian journalist and a documentary filmmaker who has also worked at NASA in the US.

"The Anatomy of Russian Defense Conversion" touches on many more subjects then just Russian Defense Industry. This is a very thorough, informative and important work that analyses the history of US and Russian Defense Industries, weapons exports and conversion, and possibilities of transformation from a militarized to a civilian economy in the new millenium.

The book also reflects on the current state of defense industries in the US and Russia, and "brain drain", or loss of intellectual capital in Russia and other countries after the Cold War.

I found reflections in Arkady Yarovsky's chapter "From the Culture of War to the Culture of Peace" very contemporary, especially in the light of recent events in the Middle East:

"Our time is unfortunately still characterized as "the culture of war." The culture of war is evident first and foremost in the hostilities between people and states, between nations and faiths, and in the inability to solve conflicts by peaceful means... Humanity has made it into the third millenium because the lust for power has been restrained by fear of nuclear war, but this restraint is not to be counted on permanently... The danger hidden in the separateness of people of different countries, unfortunately, remains a legacy for the next century... If humanity renounces the legacy of the culture of war, it can start down the road of cooperation, peaceful creation, and enlightenment. This is the only road leading to the culture of peace."

A Subject of Mutual Interest
One can imagine that I, as a small child living in San Antonio, Texas, next to three Air Force bases and an Army base, living through the Cuban missile crisis, thought about the threat of the Russian military. I also met my parents' wonderful emigre' friends, and to this day have had warm relations with Russian people.

This book tells of the enormous cost to the Russian people of building and maintaining their war industry for so many years, a militarized economy where people got second best. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, defense industry just about shut down, but civilian industry has not grown great enough to support the population. There are horrendous unemployment, and terrible health and social problems. There is some danger that the path of least resistance for Russia, if we neglect the situation, could be to re-start weapons production, for export at first.

In my opinion, the United States also, to a lesser degree, has neglected the manufacture of quality consumer goods, importing them instead, and has let its physical economy deteriorate, despite much activity in the financial sector. We, too, have been insufficiently careful of the environment. This book provides some idea of what these trends could lead to, if carried to extremes.

Perhaps the involvement of United States companies in Russia, could lead to more of a recognition here, of the importance of the physical economy. Hopefully, both countries could also work to put industry on a healthy environmental footing as well.

There is awareness of the problem of Russian defense conversion, at high levels of our government. I hope this book helps educate people and sustain that interest.

Buy This Book!
Author Mary Stickney has a real winner here. A former wife of an American diplomat assigned to a remote province in India in the politically turbulent 60s, Stickney successfully takes the reader on an exotic, sometimes perilous journey. Opening with the arrival of her young family in India, the author's primary literary device is offering readers excerpts from personal journals. This makes her writing as fresh and inviting as the time they were first written three decades ago. The book is personal and unassuming, easy to read, and a genuine page-turner.

Highly recommended for those wanting to revisit India, as well as for first-time visitors to this fascinating, often physically challenging land. The writing encompasses history, overlapping religions and languages comprising the fabric of the country, and the complex social systems and customs of the land and its people. At the same time, JUNGLE PATHS deals with personal encounters and offers objective observations and fair criticisms throughout the course of the book. The continuing chasm between wealth and abject poverty in many parts of India is especially well-presented here.

I very much enjoyed reading this book.

Rod Haynes

Candid, personal memoir of life in an amazing land
If you like adventures and travel, you'll find plenty in this real-life story of 'strangers in paradise' -- an American family encountering a different world. The author shows you India vividly through her eyes, as she and her family explored the country, struggled with the problems, and ultimately were captivated by the land, the mystique and the people. She writes candidly about her experiences, both serious and humorous. A great way to get an inside look at some intriguing cultures and places.

Knott's Handbook for Vegetable Growers
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (1988)
Authors: Donald N. Maynard, James Edward Knott, and Oscar Anthony Lorenz
Amazon base price: $89.95
Average review score:

A helpful reference tool
First published in 1956, this handbook is an indispensable, up-to-date companion both in the field and in the marketplace. Topics include the vegetable industry, greenhouse vegetable production, soils and fertilizers, water, pests, weed control, harvesting, storage, and seed production. Packed with quick-access graphs, tables, charts, and line drawings, the 4th edition offers new information on drip irrigation, seed germination, plant tissue and sap testing, windbreaks, and weed management. It also gives advice on allowable pesticide and herbicide use and on the latest worker protection standards. The appendix contains sources of vegetable information, providers of vegetable seeds, periodicals for vegetable growers, and U.S. units of measurement and the metric conversion factors. A change from the spiral-bound 3rd edition is a sturdy, flexible cover to help hold pages flat.

Fantastic reference work to answer disease&insect problems
I use this book as my first reference work to answer disease and insect problems in vegetables for the public. The layout is extremely easy to use. Each section is very clear and concise. This work is also used for establishing small plot research design that is comprable to the large scale production fields. All the information one needs is in this handbook for vegtable trials and for large scale production. There is very little else on the market that is as comprehensive as this publication and as accurate regarding information provided.

Does anybody know?
If it is possible to secure The Paris Review - Interview with writers published by Penguin through the 1970's and 80's

fantastic read
The Paris Review is the best literary magazine around (even though they've rejected all of my stories). But anyway, the interview and stories are top notch. I love the blend of unknown writers and famous writers. This issue is especially good, for it's a concept issue, "New British Writing." The forum is excellent, with each author asked to give their opinion on, of course, the state of "British" literature. Furthermore, George Plimpton is very inspiring. Just reading an issue wants to make you write better or start your own magazine.

The Standard on Civil War History
Professor Donald provides insight into how the collective decisions of the past have led to so many of the problematic circumstances we face as a nation today. Professors Donald, Baker and Holt take the reader back to over twenty years before the beginning of the Civil War and continue through Reconstruction to examine the various factors and angles from which the entire history of the Civil War and Reconstruction is derived. The student of American History has everything needed in one concise volume to gain a working knowledge of the Civil war and Reconstruction era. This work is a well-documented, factual and detailed account of the most trying period of history our nation has seen to date. The work is accurate, comprehensive and concise. No doubt The Civil War and Reconstruction by David H. Donald will maintain a prominent place in any serious historical library for years to come.
