A little girl falls into another dimension in her own home
"Little Girl Lost" was Richard Matheson's Twilight Zone episode about a little girl who falls through a hole between dimensions. The story is based on a real incident in which Matheson's daughter cried out in the middle of the night and he and his wife could not find her: she had fallen off of her bed and rolled all the way underneath against the wall. Inspired by the incident Matheson originally wrote "Little Girl Lost" as a short story, published in his collection "The Shores of Space" in 1953. In both the short story and the television script Matheson used the names of his wife and daughter, Ruth and Tina, as the names of the mother and daughter. The key to this episode was to create unease by twisting reality around, so that suddenly an ordinary home becomes a place of horror. Of course, at the heart of this is the parent's fear that they have lost their child. As a television episode there were some problems with this script, but none of those intrude when reading Matheson's script. Finally, if you see any parallels between "Little Girl Lost" and the film "Poltergeist," you are not alone. This script is almost as old as I am and it still shows that Matheson was a first-rate television scribe.

Archaeological evidence paints the picture
Reading accounts of the Battle of the Little Bighorn sometimes leaves a mass of confusion to the reader. Even visitation to the site does not always enable oneself to clearly picture the events of that day. This book, which does not attempt to explain why things happened does much to set the scene and completes the picture that is painted by the numerous accounts of what happened. The reader may find this book to be dry, perhaps repetitious in some place, but in the end, will appreciate the information that is provided. Be aware that reading this book will forever cause the reader to imediately reject any printed material on The Battle of the Bighorn, that is not properly (and correctly) researched. This book is a good reference for any library.

It sheds new light on the battle
This is an excellent book because it cuts through the partisan pro Custer, anti Custer views that are the main theme in almost all the books about the battle written to date. I highly recommend all the books written by Fox on this subject because he has no pre conceived ideas or biases. He bases his interpretations on the physical evidence remaining at the site and draws his conclusions from that evidence.

Excellent study of archaeological remains on the LBH
I don't understand where most of these previous reviewers are coming from. This is not meant to be a "theory-book" on the battle of the Little Bighorn. All it is is as an "assessment of the 1984 field season" of archaeological work on the battlefield. As that it functions well, with complete descriptions of the recovered artifacts and many sketches and pictures. There are only about 15 pages about the way the battle itself went, and it just correlates the artifacts in a preliminary way to how the battle may have progressed. It's nothing to get upset over. As for the Kansas City reviewer, he must be on another planet. Kuhlman's work was not "ripped without mercy" in this book. As a matter of fact, I don't think Kuhlman was even mentioned at all.

a shabby scrapbook
Little Richard is such an important figure in 20th-century music that it is crucial that there be a biography of him out there. However, this biography is more a scrapbook than a polished work. Oftentimes, you can't tell when the author, Richard, or an acquaintance is speaking. There is no analysis of the events in Richard's life. This book pales in comparison to texts on Billy Strayhorn, Josephine Baker, etc. This book drags on about concert after concert after concert. Besides, Richard is in his homophobic phase at the time of the book's writing and there is no attempt to put his self-loathing into context. I needed to learn more about Richard, so I am glad this book exists. However, this was a poor piece of autobiography and I am surprised that the author did not take the time to fine tune his work.

Long Overdue Biography of a King
The Homewood, IL reviewer (07-08-01) suggested that the author rushed this work. It's been well-documented in print and on radio interviews that the book took many years to write - in fact the author made several trips from England to California to speak one-on-one with The Quasar himself, his former Managers, sidemen, songwriters, and on and on.
What the reviewer is probably most bothered by is the discography section. Yes, it was poorly edited and lacking in some important details - but it's been suggested that the sessiongraphy was conceived to include a running commentary by Little Richard and to account for, perhaps, one-third of the book. It's understandable that such an approach benefits only deep fans and historians, so the proverbial "bottom line" was apparently applied to the project.
Life & Times...is the author's first book and he displayed a fine writing ability, with a colorful descriptive sense. At times, his hyperbolic approach can make the unitiated uneasy, but considering the bombastic style of the subject, it fits.
Although some parts of his career remain in mystery even after this book release, the better-known periods recieve a thorough review: his childhood years involving sexual confusion and a growing awareness that he had something special to offer the music culture; the swingin' R & B years when R & R was confined to clubs; the R & R Revival period when he made a successful "comeback" and convinced many that he had the greatest voice all along; the struggle with drugs in the early '70s leading to an almost overnight clean-up and a rediscovered spirituality.
Richard was not singing Rock and Roll when the hardcover came out in September, 1984. It is believed that this work created a strong enough interest in his career, that a critically acclaimed "Contemporary Christian" album "Lifetime Friend" and a memorable appearance in Paul Mazursky's movie "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" (which included a Richard Top 50 hit for '86) led to his return to Rock in '89. (Which made some folks, who thought he was better situated in the non-secular world, uncomfortable). But there is no doubt that this book filled a major void in the rock music press.

a great book
i enjoyed this book.it details so much.this man is the true king of rock-n-roll.and he has always been upfront about different subjects.he has had an enormous impact on the music world.this book tells of racisim and the constant battle for respect and truth.this man is a true original.

Disappointing
As a student of Buddhism, I found much of the content in this book to be diluted Buddhism. Basically, it's Buddhist teachings without the Buddhism in it. I'm sure it helps many people, but for me it was diappointing - lacking in depth and substance.

work!!!
It really is a "WORK" book. It takes alot of thinking and quiet time to answer the questions and to go back and analyze what you have written down. Too much work for me. I guess this book would be good for someone who has alot of extra time on their hands to ponder their life. I do not have that time.

Skip the book and go straight for the workbook instead
The workbook is actually better than the book itself. The workbook has all the same information in it that the corresponding book has plus exercises and quizzes you can take to help improve your life. If you are disciplined enough to do the exercises in the workbook you will benefit by taking what you've learned and actually apply it towards your life. If you just read the book without doing any workbook exercises, the learning is much more passive and less fun.

rehash of the camp interviews
Hardorff writes well but its an awful waste of time to put out two small books, one for the Dakota and one for the Cheyenne which are essentially reprints of the Camp interviews. It is nice to have these interviews available but you can order Camp direct. This particular book I thought was flawed because it starts with American Horse who by all other accounts (but his own) was not in the Little Bighorn Fight.

Braen and Jenkins-Manual of Emergency Medicine
The Manual of Emergency Medicine by Braen and Jenkins is a basic text for those interested in the clinical practice of Emergency Medicine. All the basic topics are covered, and the text is well indexed to find the information you need.

The scope of the book, however, falls short of that needed for medical students, interns, residents, and certainly practicing emergency medicine specialists who need a comprehensive text-it is truly just a manual. The information is generally collected from other sources and texts in general emergency medicine that also do not address evidence based emergency medicine practice. The book tends to make treatment recommendations that are useful but again are not evidence based.

The sections on trauma, cardiac emergencies, and pulmonary problems are good, but the areas pertaining to toxicology, environmental emergencies, ob/gyn, neurology, and medical-legal need improvement.

Two very good alternative references are Emergency Medicine: A Comprehensive Study Guide by Judith Tintinalli, et al (5 stars) OR Emergency Medicine by Rosen and Barkin (4 stars). With either of these, you will never need to buy another major text in emergency medicine for years.
