An excellent book for children and adults.
I am a kindergarten teacher and Juliet is one of my students. We both liked the book. We learned a lot about tigers. We are going to the zoo tomorrow and we will look for a tigress like the one in the book! It is a book that we will read again and again.

Ting a Ling rings right with us!
My 10-month daughter squeals with delight when she sees this book on her table! The simple story of a child playing on her toy phone coupled with nice bright drawings is captivating for little ones. Objects in the story are familiar to most every child's nursery and the story has a sweet ending. The book is not too long, not too short -- just right for young attention spans. Pages are durable enough for little hands to turn them. We initially borrowed this one from the local library, but are buying it for our permanent collection.

Excellent quick reference guide
I purchased this book to include in my library and to serve as a reference for lectures. I have found this book to be a superior guide for gaining the basic knowledge of the important topics in toxicology, without too much information. I very much enjoy all of the Secrets Series books that I have purchased (about 10 of them so far), but have found this one to be one of the best of the bunch. The concise nature of the various topics is put together very well and has many interesting "extra tidbits" that are great as "Did you know" facts for lectures. All major and many less common medications and environmental toxicities are covered. Definitely a great choice for the home or office library.

Urban Land Reform in China
Published in Hardcover by MacMillan Pub Ltd (1999)
Author: Ling-Hin Li
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

This book represents an excellent account of the issue
The author provides an interesting historical review of the history of land system in China. This is very useful as this is one of the few records of this kind in English text. In addition, the author also gives a very interesting and comprehensive examination of the current land use system reform in China. This is very important as virtually all other economic reforms take place on and above physical land. The comparative study of Shanghai and Hong Kong is most intriguing as these two cities represent the fore-runners in the current Chinese economy under quite different socio-political ideology. I think the author has given a very in-depth analysis of the success of and problems facing China in terms of urban land use issues. The author is very correct in saying every country is a unique entity that it is not reasonable to judge the reform programme from a generalised set of criteria.

Stories which chnge the reader..
To review these short stories demands the shortest of comments. Geling Yan thankfully has been translated so that for those of us who can only read 'English' have not been denied stories, which once read cannot be forgotten. I truly cannot praise the quality, emotional content, technical structuring, linguistic texture, etc. etc., sufficiently highly. I can only suggest that you read these short storiesand discover their wonder.

Sensitive, Thoughtful, Creative
I was a bit surprised when my husband first handed me my copy of 'White Snake and Other Stories'. I had never read any Chinese literature in my life and was quite unfamiliar with Lawrence Walker and Geling Yan as a translator author team.
What a wonderful surprise my husband's gift turned out to be! The writing style was so sensitive, thoughtful, creative that I felt I was literally being transported into another time and another culture. I feel that what I learned about China in the short time it took me to read this book is priceless, not to mention the true enjoyment of reading good, creative original literature like 'White Snake'. My congratulations to both Geling Yan for writing this marvelous book, and to Lawrence Walker for doing such an incredibly brilliant job at translating what must have been an unbelievably difficult work. He made it so easy to read that one would have thought it was written originally in English. And Geling brought to me her China in her own wonderful way!

A Delightful and yet Disturbing Portrayal of Life
Geling Yan's WHITE SNAKE AND OTHER STORIES is an excellent collection of the author's 6 short stories. "White Snake" is pyschologically and emotionally most subtle. The story derives the theme allegorically from an ancient fable of love for its plot, and it transforms that faithful love into a very subtle and complex human experience that deserves various interpretations. As in her other stories, "White Snake" leaves room for the reader's imgaination to explore and appreciate its meaning. It is poetic! "White Snake," "Celestial Bath" and "Siao Yu" are also political. The author is skillful to portray an individual's life in the context of a large and powerful world of political entity. "Celestial Bath" and "Siao Yu" actually depict a tragedy of the Chinese nation. Hemingway-like detachment is the author's approach, even in "The Death of the Liutenant" in which the woman writer is apparently the author's alter ego. Lawrence Walker's translation is fluent, faithful to the original and very readable. Yan's style, however, is so sophisticate that no translation can do justice. (This is the problem for all translations). This collection of Yan's stories is a suitable text for a contemporary Chinese literature course.

Chen Pan Lings Original Tai Chi Chuan Textbook

The simplest the greatest.
The book is written without any speculation. It just tells you "how to do" even for what regarding the deep internal feeling during the tai chi practice. Much more great are the flow charts of the several tai chi skills development. (first that , then that, then that......) .In the initial chapters it looks like a great "Tai Chi Classic" written in modern (and concise) language.
No one word more, no one word less.
The sequence, very well illustrated in the book (with photos, foot diagrams, applications), is Chen's own stile. The footwork shows a Bagua Chuan influence that makes much more interesting and exciting to study the form. In addition there are clear and deep explanations of the applications (movement by movement during all the form description) and the self feeling on executing each posture.
This is really an excellent book. Even though I can not say it is a book for beginners It contains alone almost everything you need to practice and further study Tai Chi Chuan.
I teach Tai Chi and I own a huge amount of Tai Chi books, anyway, if it could happen I got lost in a faraway desert island, that's the Tai Chi book I'd like to have with me.

Tai Chi Quan before it was the Groovy Thang...
...Chen Pan-ling was a practical martial artist who had a background in not only Tai Chi (Yang & Wu), but also Hsing Yi and Bagua. The book not only includes clear photos (clearer than in my original Chinese version of this book) and precise descriptions of the proper movements and applications, but also descriptions of how you should feel. This is Tai Chi at it's most practical, not a new-agey easy to learn sequence.

Chen was a pioneer in that he did away with a lot of the superstition and ritual associated with martial arts teachers at the time. His attempt at educated scientific study of this martial art is a welcome addition to the mibrary of the scholarly martial artist.

An excellent book on a rare style of taiji !
This book is for those who have heard of, studied, or otherwise know of Chen Pan-Ling. He was mentioned in Robert W. Smith's excellent book, "Chinese Boxing: Masters and Methods" as being one of the best Taiji masters of the 20th century. Highly recommended!

Star Wars: The Action Figure Archive... GREAT BOOK
The best part is that this is a REFERENCE BOOK, not a price guide. Thus, it contains tons of TIMELESS information, but no bogus or outdated prices. I recently ordered and read seven price guides and reference books dealing with vintage Star Wars figures (and numerous other collectable figures), and this is by far the best of the bunch. It shows a picture of every vintage figure from numerous angles, it shows numerous figure variations, it shows EVERY card variations for EVERY figure, and it identifies the weapons and accessories that originally came with each figure. It also shows all vintage play sets and mail in promotions (though unfortunately it does not provide quite as much information about these). It also does a nice job covering early POTF figures, and more recent figures from the mid to late 90s. And, EVERYTHING IS IN FULL COLOR ON HIGH QUALITY PAPER! If you're looking for a price guide, this is not the book for you. But, if you are looking for an outstanding reference book dealing with vintage Star Wars action figures, you will not be disappointed with this book. In fact, I actually ordered a second copy for myself in case my first one gets damaged with use!

Collectors must have this one!
Incredible book! Every page is of high quality paper with stunning photos of the front, back, and side of a every figure ever produced. I was in awe when I first opened it and I could not put it down until I browsed through every page. One nice feature is there is a photo of every figure in its card packaging. If there are variations to the cards, it has a photo of each! In the back of the book, there is a detailed listing of all figures, catagorized. You can photocopy these lists and then use it as a checklist for your own collection. I have been collecting for quite some time and this book re-fires the Star Wars collecting spirit and made me remember all the toys I had as a child that brought me so much joy.

A trip down memory lane
For a lot of people, Star Wars figures were a big part of their childhood memories. So much so in some cases that as adults we find ourselves unable to resist the temptation to buy some of the new figures too. This book includes a number of rare figures, variations of particular figures--and stretches chronologically up to 1998. This book is a "coffee-table" type book that is VERY complete and very high quality. The pictures of both the figures and movie shots of the characters are visually stunning. This was a well thought-out book.

Muhammad : his life based on the earliest sources
Published in Unknown Binding by Islamic Texts Society : Allen & Unwin ()
Author: Martin Lings
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

The art of record keeping at its best!
The book, Muhammad, by Martin Lings is a lucid and awe inspiring insight into a culture, a people, their lifestyle, their growth and the development of the religion of Islam. This it does by tracing the life of one whose actions are so well intentioned, so meaningful, so thoughful. Their culture, their scribes, their oral traditions, their love for poetry, remind one of the more studied and familiar Shakespearian tradition, only this is non fiction. The book relates the trails and travails of the clans and tribal etiquette, from his grandfather's parents, their marriages, their journeys, their businesses, in a manner that their lives jump out at you.

Islam is the religion that he brought, those opposed to Islam should read this book so that that their opinions may be reworked to appreciate the reality of the man called Muhammad. saw. The Prophet May Allah be pleased with him, brought peace, negotiation, justice, a mandate for education, respect for women, love , brotherhood, and the deepest appreciation for our common humanity, all of which the book chronicles so well. His wars, were never senseless slaughter of women and children, he did not enforce his Islam, but allowed others to worship as they pleased. He was a strategic thinker, a planner and a slave of Allah. He loved people as his brothers, he was gentle with his wives, he leglislated with equity. He never professed greatness, he was such a simple man, unassuming, and he suffered like all of God's Prophets. However, he outshun them all. First because so much detail has been preserved as recorded by Lings, about his life, his family, their acceptance of Islam as a religion. Second, because when he died he was the most beloved by all the community, he was respected by world leaders of that day. Even his bitter enemies of the Qureysh had come to love and revere him and third, his Books, the Qur'an and the Hadith have been painstakingly preserved. May Allah bless him and his family and his companions, and their companions who sought nearness to God.
Thank You. Raziah Ahmed, Trinidad WI.

Most Informative Book About Muhammad(PBUH)
I read lots of books on Muhammad(PBUH) earlier. This book is very different from all those I read earlier. It describes the Life of Prophet Muhammad in a very simple and nice way. The incidents and the cases are taken from the earliest sources, which are true and proven. This is what makes the book an authenctic source of information to all those readers who are interested to know about Islam and its culture. I encourage people of every religion to read this book and know who and what was Muhammad's(PBUH) personality.

A Reflection of Islamic Tradition
It would seem that Muhammad is gradually succumbing to the same fate as Jesus, in that each generation feels an urgent need to reinterpret him in light of their own understanding. Quite a few biographies of the prophet are already on the market, from such diverse writers as the military man John Glubb to the atheist Maxime Rodinson.

This one is different. As the title indicates, it is a life of Muhammad based on the earliest sources. The "sources" in question here are the sirat, or biographies of the prophet, which were written a couple of centuries after his death. These original biographies were compiled based on the traditions handed down regarding what the prophet did, much the same as the hadith are a transmission of what the prophet said. The contents of these biographies are canonical; their position in Islam is somewhat analogous to works of the fathers of the church in Christianity.

Which explains the air of piety about this book, which unfortunately may throw some readers off. What this book achieves, and achieves greatly in my opinion, is a reflection of how the Muslim world traditionally thinks of Muhammad. It does not attempt to break new ground or provide new interpretations of Muhammad's life and mission; rather it assists the Western reader in understanding the traditional interpretation of his life and mission. I would recommend this book highly to anyone interested in understanding Islamic belief and the position that Muhammad occupies in traditional Islamic values; I have come across no other book in English that conveys it as well as this one does.

Perfect Dough
This guy knows what he's talking about.

You might spend years, and read many pizza cookbooks, before you find the perfect dough. That dough is the one in this book.

I've been cooking a long time. 40 years. I've even run and been chef at a diner. Listen: Mr. DeAngelis knows how to make the perfect pizza. And many of his "toppings" recipes are also excellent.

If you are interested in giving your family and guests pizza dinners that are better than they can get anywhere in town--get this book and use his ideas.

Excellent -- Best I ever spent on a book!
I've bought many pizza cookbooks, but none have mentioned some of the ingredients, or techniques that this book describes. Following the directions in this book, I made my first home made pizza with a crust I actually enjoyed.

If you are interested in pizzaria quality pizza at home, this is the FIRST book you should read.

This book has replaced ALL of my pizza cookbooks. (Others are collecting dust while this one is collecting tomato stains!) After all, if you use the proper techniques and suggestions used in this book, you can top it any way you want and achieve execellent results.

My sincere thanks to the author!

Easiest and Best Tasting Pizza You'll Create!
My husband and I have been creating pizzas for years using this book. It is easy to follow the recipes and explains how the pizza ingredients affect the taste and quality of the pizza. Our family and friends have also used the book. The pizza is a main staple around our 'group'. We usually have a dough or 2 in the freezer! Everyone we make pizza for raves about it. We have even experimented with our own toppings. The basic dough recipe is a great jumping ground for creative pizza makers but is simple enough for anyone to follow. We highly recommend this book. It makes a great gift too!
