A fascinating study of some of the myths of modern Japan.
As a 17 year resident of Japan, I thoroughly enjoyed Lie's book. He has written a highly readable account of how modern Japan has created a myth of monoethnicity that serves as a source of national identity. As a Korean who spent his youth in Japan before emigrating to the United States, Lie is well equipped to write on this subject. He has drawn on his own research and interviews with Japanese as well as the writings of important Japanese academics and cultural critics.
One disappointment is his dismissal of Ivan Hall's chapter on Academic Apartheid. Lie says he "found remarkable indulgence accorded to white academics and intellectuals" p. 173. The case of mistreatment of a foreign academic about which Hall goes into most detail is, ironically, not about a white academic, but a Korean. Lie has obviously not read Hall's chapter. However, if you ignore this slip, the book offers many insights into how contemporary Japan views itself vis-a-vis its own minorities and the world outside its borders.

Great, eye-opening book
I thought the book "boys lie" was great. It really opened my eyes to see how some boys see things and exactly how far off they really are. I thought it was very well-written and kept you wanting to read. It has changed my view of guys somewhat. Although it may be a mature subject, it is approached well and there is a need for books like this. Overall, I thought it was great.

Boys Lie
If you are looking for the best book ever than this is the book to look into! This book is called "Boys Lie." This is such a good book because it sounds like a true story and it really does sound so real when you read it. The details in the book are so specific that it just makes it so interesting. At the end of the book you just wanted to keep reading even though there were no more pages to turn. The book "Boys Lie" is by John Neufeld. The book has to do with a girl about 14 years old who is being tortured and raped by these boys from school. This girl has to keep moving because of these boys doing this stuff to her. I really liked this book because it is so entertaining that you just dont want to tear your eyes away from it. Sometimes you want to cry and sometimes you want to laugh but whatever way you express your feelings, you will never forget this book. When i read this book I put myself into the girl's shoes and pictured that kind of stuff happening to me. So if you want to read the best book ever...than read "Boys Lie!!"

Couldn't put the book down!
I started reading it just for a book report but I got so into it I couldn't put it down! I read it everywhere I went and got some of my friends to read it too. All with the same reaction. This book is a keeper.

New Age History
I had heard Stilgoe on a recent NPR show, and was looking forward to reading his observations about our changing built environment. While there is a smattering of interesting information (i.e., the fact that AC and DC currents once vied with each other in homes), the majority of it is so much fluffy, new agey, and poorly written observations. For the same price, I recommend a much more complete and fascinating book about observing change, "How Buildings Learn" by Stewart Brand. It's spectacular.

Guide to interacting with the visual environment
Though you may get more detailed info on some of the specific subjects covered in this book, the point really is that if you get out on foot or bicycle you can begin to relearn visual acuity. It is not the end all be all guide to the visual landscape but rather a call to arms. Most people wonder at the keen perception demonstrated by observers in previous centuries, Stilgoe spells out why we have lost this and how we may regain it. His chapters are inticements and not academic. For proof of Stilgoe's total mastery of landscape history read any of his previous works. I can't think of a similar book on the market today that addresses the urban landcsape, the everyday and does not romanticize the wilderness "preserves" of the park service. Excellent. Don't read it unless you plan to get off your butt.

Curt Raffi
John Stilgoe once again captures the imagination of the reader and encourages us to truly "see", not just "inhabit" the world that lies all around us.

As in his other works, he teaches us that history and archaeology are not just a part of musty museums, but of the every day built environment. There is a history behind everything that we come across in our daily lives and he wants us to take a second as a child might and think about the environment in which we live.

Having had the opportunity to take classes he taught at Harvard, this book enabled me to reenter his world of delicate insight and deep knowledge about what many in our society simply overlook or have forgotten.

If you like pop culture, history, walking down forgotten railroad beds or simply enjoy driving down unknown roads, Stilgoe will capture you.

Mindless drivel
This book has high points and low points, but the latter, unfortunately, far exceed the former. Which is a shame because Boba Fett has the potential to be such an interesting character and should fit right into the comic book forum. The art in this book was not horrible, but the color scheme -- the same unnatural conglomeration of greens and yellows and reds used in the Dark Empire series, is dull, ugly, and silly. The characters, especially the Hutts, are portrayed as nothing more than morons, and the action (what action?), is slow, pointless and uninteresting.

There are a few little bits of neat dialogue and interesting character insights into the galaxy's most feared bounty hunter, but, just to give you a general idea, it took me three or four tries before I could actually force myself to read this one through to the end. A part of this is because, even though this book is long, it isn't as unified a series as most of the others, and each of the three issues represented here are 48 pages, so they start seeming long and drawn out in their own right.

If you absolutely love Boba Fett, don't buy this one...it'll ruin him for you. If you, however, fancy yourself a Star Wars collector, then I guess this is a necessary addition to your bookshelf. And to end -- a chronological note. This book is officially supposed to take place after Fett's exploits in Dark Empire I & II.

Meh.
Nothing to notable here. The plot was overall quite shaky, with an inconsistent mix of humor and action. Cam Kenndey's art is its usual.... uniqueness. Like it or not, it will take some getting used to.

The stories are odd and at times rather ludicrous. Overall, if you want some nice Boba Fett/bounty hunter action, look for 'Enemy of the Empire' and the 'Shadows of the Empire' comic.

Shrapnal`s review
Boba fett didn`t die in the pit of carcoon. He escaped after finding out about the inteligent life form inside the salaac. That`s why he was able to be written about in this extreme comic book. Action is kept up through the intire book. It prooves Boba Fett`s skill and power. I love the literature that is used by all of the main people. Boba fett`s calm atmosphere makes his killings seem athentic to his personality. YOU GOTTA READ THIS BOOK!

Not worth the paper
This book is full of non-scripturally based lies itself. It follows the pop culture of complete tolerance, which is not the teachings of Jesus. Don't waste your time if you want to find salvation, turn to the true teachings of Jesus, "The Bible".

I bought it for a laugh
Ok I will admit it, I bought this book so I could laugh my pants off. It worked. No this isnt slap-stick humor that I was laughing at but sheer ignorance. This is a "christian" book to inform the 'christians' to not give into demonism and not to believe this psychic 'stuff' because its just Satan....PLease. Tis funny that Jesus was a master psychic and he said "all thing I do, you can do and more" yet the church never listens to Jesus only when it is convienent for them. This book declares that all psychics are fruit-cakes like Latoya Jackson who want to scam you out of their money...yet I do not see them making any of these claims to their insurance companies. Hmmm? Bottom line: I think Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson wrote this book under pen names.
