Essential reading on the environmental and human rights.
Broken Trust, Broken Land by Dr. Robert G. Lee is essential reading for those who want to understand how to balance environmental protection with human rights. Just as Rachel Carson's Silent Spring was an alert to the excesses of uncheck environmental degradation, Broken Trust, Broken Land is an alert to the excesses of unquestioned control for environmental protection. Dr. Lee shows that democracy, personal freedom, and our institutional system of checks and balances was carefully crafted by America's founders based on a realistic pessimism about human nature. These basic institutional protections are being undermined by a movement that is using moral persuasion to "save the earth". In the process, we have moved closer to a totalitarian society where individual rights and alternative authorities, such as family, community and religion, are subordinated to Mother Earth. Only by maintaining the moral equivalent of a war over the environment has society been willing to voluntarily suspend the protection of our democratic political system. The shocking conclusion is that this voluntary erosion of our democratic institutions will ultimately lead to a lose-lose tradegy where personal freedom and the environment both suffer. To avoid this Dr. Lee argues that we must build on the strengths of our political traditions, our families, our communities, and even religion. This story weaves such diverse topics as disenchantment with Judeo-Christian beliefs, the movement away from land stewardship and toward man's subservance to nature, the paradox that we can not live without taking life, political correctness in science, the President's Forest Plan, and the rise of "philosopher kings" who use their scientific credentials to make moral choices about the environment. This brave and thoughtful book should be read by those who want to recreate the traditional balances of American society which will ultimately result in fairer and better environmental management. An excellent companion book on how science is applied to natural resouce questions is The Great Salmon Hoax: An Eyewitness Account of the Collapse of Science and Law and the Triumph of Politics in Salmon Recovery by James Buchal.

Grant's "Memoirs" and Memories of Lee in one nice Gift Book
This is a lavishly illustrated abridgement of Grant's wonderful "Personal Memoirs" and of Confederate Officer Armistead Long's "Memoirs of Robert E. Lee", two of the major works of the Civil War (Lee never did get around to writing his own memoirs).

While it must be stressed that this is an abridgement, and the actual volumes themselves are worth purchasing on their own, especially Grant's, the clear text and the extraordinary and realistic illustrations makes this volume a perfect gift for the Civil War buff this holiday season, or a worthy addition to one's own Civil War Library even if you already have the separate volumes - as I do.

Quite fascinating
In this fascinating book, Professor Robert Lee of Tokyo Biblical Seminary examines Christianity in Japan. Professor Lee argues that the Christian theology introduced by missionaries throughout Japanese history was developed around (and as such had woven inside of it) Western individualism. As such, Christianity in Japan has always been viewed not only as a foreign philosophy, but one that clashes with Japanese culture at its most basic levels.

Professor Lee looks at the underlying culture in Japan, explaining how it is different from Western culture, and what it means for the individual and for Japanese society. He then examines the religious philosophies of Buddhism and Confucianism, and points out how Christianity rides a middle ground between the two, in a way that is not fundamentally at odds with either culture. (This chapter was breathtaking, and I was unable to put the book down while reading it!) The final chapter is a look at the history of the Church in Japan, and the changes it needs to make in itself and in Japanese culture.

I can't say enough about this book. Professor Lee's analysis of Japanese culture was quite fascinating, giving me a better understanding of it than I have gotten from any other book. If you are interested in Christianity in Japan, or just in Japan itself, then I highly recommend this book to you.

It's ok...
Nothing spectacular to write home about. When I bought this book, I was hoping for the old radio dramas that I used to listen to when I was a kid on Sunday nights. I will say that there were some very good stories. But a few left you rather wanting.

Flying Tiger: Chennault of China

Author: Robert Lee Scott

Used price: $10.51
Average review score:

this book is a must-read for chennault fans!
This book was written at the tail end of B/gen scotts career as commander of Luke Air Force Base in arizona. Knowing what we know now about Gen Chennault and his men and their collective discontent for authority, specifically the likes of clayton bissell and joseph stilwell, i can only assume that "Scotty" held back somewhat in this writing. Maybe back in the 50s you were supposed to be reserved. However, this is an excellent story of one of the rennaisance men of aviation, a man who single handedly changed the way we fight in the air. Chennault was handcuffed almost from the start, being labeled as a maverick and cast aside much too early in a career that would eventually transform itself into the world of civilian air transportation with the flying tiger line.

There have been many books on chennault, but this one is one from one of the "regulars" who won over not only chennault but his band of merrymen known as the AVG, or the REAL flying tigers.! It is definitely one that i recommend to any fan of Gen chennault or Robert L. Scott.
