Just what the "Dummie" needed
I am taking a course, through our community college, on Microsoft Office 2000. Our instructor made a general recommendation for simply written books like this. I had seen the "Dummies" books before, but had never looked at one. This book is awesome! It is so general and easy to understand. I can actually read and absorb the information easily. Thanks to the authors for bringing things down to the average person's level of understanding. Now I feel like I could tackle almost anything using Office 2000.

Extremely Satisfied!
I was extremely satisfied with my purchase. The book was received in excellent condition, and quicker than I expected! I will definitely be making more purchases from this seller. Thank You!

An Amazing Surprise!
A friend dropped this book off for me to look at, and I almost never opened it because I am generally not impressed the "Dummies" series. However, this book is wonderfully refreshing exception and every office should have it. It has a brief Overview/Reference of W98, and every aspect of Office. It is worded well, and shows you step-by-step how to do a great many common tasks with office. It does not cover any of the subjects in depth, and did not cover FrontPage very well, but I still have to give it a 5. It is a well organized, well written overview of Office and I feel It is a must have. By the way, I bought his copy and about four more since to cut down on technical support calls from my clients.

The Hulk's History in a great anthology book
This volume of short stories was published just as Peter David ended his long run as writer of The Incredible Hulk, so his last Hulk story "The Last Titan" is his way of saying farewell to the character. I liked most of the stories in this book. Pierce Askegren, Glenn Greenberg, and Keith R.A. DeCandido were among the good writers who contributed to the anthology. It covers the early days of the Hulk from his birth in a gamma bomb explosion to a possible future time when an older Hulk faces the end of the world. I hope some of the writers who worked on these short stories get to write future Hulk novels.

Ultimate Hulk is ultimate fun!
I've always been a Hulk fan, but I lent it to my boyfriend and nade him a convert as well. Favorite story: "The Samson Journals" by Ken Grobe. A story about the guy who psychoanalyzes ALL THREE of the Hulk's personalities. Pretty cool. Dennis Brabham's take on Rick Jones was great too. Let's see another of these anthologies soon!

good luck at the Hulk's history
The Hulk has probably had the most complicated history of any Marvel superhero, and this anthology covers all of it. I wish there were more of the "merged Hulk" -- he only gets one story, and it's the good-but-not-great "Playing it SAFE" by Keith R.A. DeCandido. Peter David's "The Last Titan" is really really really really great, the perfect ending to his decade writing the Hulk comic. And there isn't a bad story in the entire book -- even the usually-awful Danny Fingeroth's story is good -- and three great ones (by Dennis Brabham, Ken Grobe, and Steve Lyons). I only wish Jason Henderosn, who wrote the fantastic novel _Abominations_, had done a story.

Great book for modelers!
This book is an invaluable source of information for plastic modelers building the German Tiger II.Color illustrations together with cutaway drawings provide accurate details of the interior layout of the tank. For future reference to the author, the addition of RAL numbers of paint colors as indexed to the colors in the illustrations in the book would be a possible improvement to be considered on this work.

A TII book friendly to your pocket
This book is a small gem. Reference on this tank is as complete as can be packed in 48 pages. Not only development history is included, but also are packed gun tables, direct comparisons to opposite tanks, and unit history with order of battle. Unless you plan to buy Jentz and Hillary more complete books, this is a must for the modeller and historian!

Best Maya book out there.
It's still version 3, but it doesn't matter. Mastering Maya 3 is one of the best beginner/intermediate books you can buy. I used Maya 4 and now Maya 4.5 and have had only benefits using this book. It has helped me along from being a beginner to being very familiar and capable with the software. I've used and seen a lot of the other books out thee, but I haven't seen a better book that covers things in the depth and range that Mastering Maya does. It's not for people new to 3D, but if you have experience in another 3D package and are moving over to Maya, it is excellent.

Great for beginners...
This book is great for beginners. I can't really say anything about it's worth for professional artists and advanced Maya users, as I am but a mere beginner. Anyway, I downloaded the free trial version of Maya 4 and bought this book and I am now cranking away! I didn't know anything about 3D modeling before, although I have a CAD background.

The book is very well organized and each chapter (that I've worked through so far) has lots of examples of how to apply the techniques described in the book.

It is excellent with respect to teaching you how to do things in Maya, but it lacks in general 3D design principals, which is to be expected from a book with the word Mastering in its title.

Now, if I could just find some good books on basic techniques (ie. when to use NURBS over polygons), etc. I'd be set!

A Great Beginner's Book -- Kind Of
After reading the various reviews already posted here, I have come to the realization that there are two distinctly different kinds of beginners. One is people with no background in 3D modeling and animation. The other has experience with the digital arts, but none with Maya itself. If you are in the first category, then this book is probably not for you. Then again, Maya itself probably isn't, either. It is a very complicated program, with tremendous power, and this book is not meant to teach the basics of 3D Modeling, Texturing, or Lighting. It IS meant to teach the basics of translating your skills into Maya know-how, and it does that admirably through the use of a series of hands-on projects that allow you to experiment with your burgeoning skills.

Not everything if you are a fan.
If you like nice big pictures without going to the full details of the x-men, this book is for you. If you are a long time fan, I would recommend get the previous edition, it still includes the annoying "behind the scenes" of the first movie (as if there were not enough DVD's with such feature) but includes more about the characters of the comics.. This updated edition includes just a few more pages but, some mutants don't appear or are not fully well described as in the previous edition, which you can still get here in Amazon. It's a nice book indeed, the cover and the quality of the paper and great illustrations, but they really need to get in touch with the fans to meet their needs. There is the need of a REAL X-men guide to all the characters, organized alphabetically prefferably.

X-TRAORDINARY EFFORT
ULTIMATE X-MEN by DK Publishing gathers all the information and trivia one might need to understand the X-Men and Marvel Universe. The depth and scope of the information is sufficient to pique the curiosity of an early to intermediate X-Men fan, and is concise and helpful at minimizing pedantry.

The artwork and book design make this a fun and easy read, akthough some diagrams seem sketchy and overly simplified, such as the designs for the Danger Room and the Blackbird. Topics that every fan is aware about, such as the Weapon X project or Cyclops powers are covered in depth, while subjects that I really wanted to see more of, such as the Age of Apocalypse and Onslaught are given two pages respectively! More discretion and sensiblity on the part of the editors would have been helpful.

The Marvel Universe is byzantine to say the least, drenched in overly convoluted stories, mishmashing mutants with cyborgs, aliens, gods, magical powers, time travel; along with conspiracies, twisted romances, deaths and resurrections: only a bureaucrat at IRS would be able to follow them through. But if anyone else has managed to make sense out of it all, it's DK in this book, ULTIMATE X-MEN.

X-cellent reference for fans
Ultimate X-Men will appeal to fans of the mutants because of its comprehensive explanation, not only of the individual characters, but also of the relationships between them. The book delves into the history and lore of all the characters. The major characters are profiled as they have developed since the sixties, all the way up to the animated TV series and this summer's blockbuster movie. Minor characters are profiled briefly, but they are all listed. The book contains a family tree which is very helpful for understanding the complex genealogy of the mutants. Summaries of major story lines such as Jean Grey's Phoenix transformation are summarized. The artwork is adequate, but not stupendous. The main strength of this book is the comprehensive explanation of the history of the X-Men. Comic buffs and X-Men fans will like this book for its detail. People who aren't fans may not appreciate the book, but they probably aren't interested in buying it anyway.

More about "the cause" than artillery
The great strength of this book is in highlighting the ethos of Southern gentlemen like Willy Pegram. Carmichael demonstrates that men like Pegram were engaged in a holy war and as such, performed heroic feats on the battlefield. So if you're one of those people who are still facinated by "the cause" of this war, then this is a book for you. If you're looking for a book on Confederate artillery tactics, techniques, and procedures, however, you'll have to look elsewhere.

Great Ibook about a young Confederate Officer Experience
I found this book a very interesting read. In it, Peter Carmichael describes the military career of the young Confederate officer, William Pegram. The books gives a nice overview of his successful role in the Army of Northern Virginia as an artillery officer. Most of the text chronicles Pegram's swift rise through the ranks as he boldly leads his men, cannons, horses and caissons on the battlefield. Mr. Carmichael uses many of Pegram's letters home to tell his story. More importantly, Pegram's view of the war, slavery, and the Confederate Cause, come through as well.

Mr. Carmichael does a fantastic job of revealing how some of the young Confederate officers like Pegram viewed the Civil War. Since most Civil War books focus more on the Generals than the junior officers who actually fought the battles, I felt that this book really brought a new perspective to my understanding of the conflict.

I do not recommend this book for those who do not already possess a good understanding of the Civil War. Instead, I highly recommend this book to anyone who has gained an appreciation for the war, and is looking to find out more about its participants. This book really opened my eyes about "the Southern Cause", and how it meant different things to different people.

A wealth of insights
More than just a blood-and-guts biography of a incredibly brave young officer, this book provides really very interesting insight into the minds and motives of educated Southern twentysomethings before and during the war. This is a fine offering from one of the better young historians working today.

Bayesian Statistics
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (1993)
Author: Peter M. Lee
Amazon base price: $65.00
Average review score:

good intermediate text
Although only the second edition is listed, I have read only the first 1989 edition and my review is for that edition. Lee wrote this book with the goal of teaching an introductory course in Bayesian statistics to his students at York University. He wanted a text that was more mathematical and deatiled than Lindley (1965) but not quite at the level of Box and Tiao.

This text achieves that goal. It was published at the time when MCMC methods were only starting to be appreciated. So the wider use of general prior distributions and hierarchical models does not yet enter into this book. I would assume that the second edition published in 1997 was written to remedy this shortcoming but I have not seen if it does.

Good introduction to basic theory of Bayesian statistics
This is a simple and easy-to-read introduction to the basics of Bayesian statistics, for someone with some previous exposure to statistical methods and theory. Lee does not try to do too much with this book. It's not too taxing on the brain, uses simple and easy-to-follow notation, and has a helpful appendix of common statistical distributions. I like the emphasis on conjugate priors, which are the mathematically most tractable Bayesian models that are often not treated fully in other texts. (Someone still needs to write the definitive text on conjugate Bayesian models.)

The book is limited in scope, a strength if you're just getting started on this topic, but will frustrate once you get into this stuff. There are plenty of other good books that go beyond the basics once you're ready.

Various writers take on the Incredible Hulk.
From Stan Lee and Jack Kirby to Peter David, this is a total of several Hulk stories done by various writers and artists on how the Hulk's different personalities have surfaced over the years. From being very intelligent to being very savage. It;s very good work and it shows how shallow the Hulk stories by Paul Jenkins really are.

Wow OH WOW
Never before has the HULK been more visually striking and the story riveting. Never before has the HULK struck our awe and asked us to reconsider his predictament and his incredible plight for fitting in. This graphic novel captures the TRUE essence of the HULK and warrants frequent readings that constantly entertains. This is the definative HULK. Oh yeah, did I mention the fantastic artwork?? Go for it.

Highly recommended
This is a tremendously informative book. Densly packed with info, and a fascinating read. My only complaint is that, since chapters were contributed by different writers, there's no style that really permeates the book. The chapter on Techno, for example, does a great job at contextualizing the Detroit sound, pointing out the influences that led to the evolution of techno, from a musical perspective, as well as from a social and even economic perspective. Unfortunately not all chapters are written the same way. The chapter on House, for example, is a bit dizzying for readers unfamiliar with the sounds and beats being described. But nevertheless... READ IT. (And Dance to it, more importantly!)

Throbbing Words on Sound!
Arty package with good content, I even mostly agree with the selected discography recommendations. Covering a nice time line from Stockhausen to present but the focus is mainly from early eighties onwards.

A good read, that offers a reasonably balanced view. One of the best books on electronic music available today, not that there are many anyway.

Peter Hurkos: I Have Many Lives

Used price: $6.79

Average review score:

HE WAS THE REAL DEAL...
This book is not really about Peter Hurkos. It is about Peter Hurkos, the psychic. If one measures this book by whether or not Peter Hurkos is revealed as a charlatan or a true psychic, then it succeeds admirably, as it leaves little doubt that Peter Hurkos was an individual with a highly unusual gift. If you measure the book by whether or not you get to know Peter Hurkos, the person, then it has not succeeded, because the reader comes away with very little feeling as to who Peter Hurkos was. The book, while interesting, suffers from being somewhat one dimensional. Notwithstanding this limitation, it is still a thought provoking read.

Peter Hurkos is the famous Dutch psychic who enthralled the world during the nineteen fifties and sixties with his psychic gifts. Uncannily clairvoyant, he was not always so. Born in Holland to a working class Dutch family of simple means, his youth was relatively uneventful. Interestingly enough, however, he was born with the caul which is often taken to mean by those who are superstitious that the individual may have been born with the gift of telepathy or clairvoyance.

Though his youth was relatively uneventful, this changed in 1941 when he fell off a ladder and fell four stories, landing on his head. He miraculously survived, but as his friends and family put it, the old Peter had died, and a new one seemed to have taken his place: one who could foretell the future, as well as describe past events, with uncanny accuracy. In the nineteen fifties, he left Holland and came to the United States, where he prospered as a well known psychic.

Peter used his gifts commercially, for which he received much criticism. He also became known as a psychic detective for helping the police solve numerous cases. Some of the cases in which he assisted were high profile cases, such as that of the Boston Strangler. Peter Hurkos always believed that the police had arrested the wrong man in that case. It now appears that he may have been right.

For many years, Peter Hurkos astonished the world with his psychic gifts. He performed best through the process of psychometry, the divination of information by touching an object belonging to the subject of the reading. I have to admit that some of the documented stories are truly amazing. So amazing that the author, an investigative reporter with a reputation for exposing frauds, became a believer. I do not doubt that the reader will likewise succumb and join the legions of those who believe that Peter Hurkos was, indeed, psychic.
