Touching story for basenji lovers of all ages
This story is not only wonderful for children, but also adult basenji lovers. A must for ever family who has ever had or known a basenji. Candle will find a place in your heart forever!

WILL LIGHT THE WAY TO FAITH
A basenji friendly household boasted of a pair of breeding basenjis and their two adorable puppies. The senior basenjis told their puppies the story of Candle, a basenji ancestor who really did show everyone the way.

An African breed that boasts of a more than 2,000 year history, the famed "barkless" dog (basenjis yodel and make laughing noises instead, these dogs were the loved pets of Egyptian aristocracy and nobility. The story of Candle takes place in Egypt.

A lovable young basenji named Candle is the adored pet in a royal household. Basenjis, naturally intelligent and curious were aware that something wonderful and miraculous was about to take place. The "basenji network" were aware that the days of excess and idolatry were soon to be challenged; a miracle was on the way.

Candle and her owner, a young Egyptian gentleman saw the Star shining brightly in the East and knew they had to follow it....

Readers will yodel with delight as well. This is truly a wonderful family bonding book and it is certainly a beautiful illustration of love and faith. I can't recommend it highly enough. I love it! The lovely illustrations and the gentle story will captivate readers of all ages.

Candle will light a path to the hearts of all who read her story.

Veronica Anne Starbuck, author of "August Magic" on "Candle"
A delightful story for all ages, this beautifully illustrated tale of the little Basenji who shares in the joy and wonder of the first Christmas is truly a timeless classic!

A Great Book for Beginners
This book is great. It covers all the main points with money saving tips. This book has it all and it explains it in a very easy no fuss way with hundreds of diagrams.

Exactly what I was looking for. Great book.
When I decided I wanted to learn a little bit more about what makes my car tick, and perhaps find out on my own what that annoying (and fairly bad sounding) whir was, I decided to check online for a few introductive books. This was the best one I found. It explained everything in a very intuitive and helpful manner. I recommend it to anyone curious about what their amazing automobile really is, and why it took so long for them to come about. Yes, they're pretty complicated, but a whole lot of fun when you figure them out.

Humorous and helpful
Reading this extremely helpful and sage guide to automotive understanding, I wondered: Is there any machine in our lives on which we depend more, and about which we know less? My relation with cars has long been superficial: the key, the radio dial, the window, the seat belt. Jackson's humorous and knowledgeable book gives us non-mechanical types a look under the hood. Ingeniously, she develops the analogy of the human body; cars, like our bodies, require regular maintenance, fluids, are sensitive to environment, etc. Buy this book: your car (and your checking account) will thank you.

A toy box for teachers
This book outlines teacher-tested ideas for teaching reading and writing. I have used many of them in my classroom, and they really work. Used in conjunction with Brandvik's other book--Writing Process Activity Book--this book is a gold mine.

Great Resource!
This is a fabulous, easy to use book. As a new teacher thrown into a long-term sub position in 8th grade, I am finding this book invaluable for ideas in the classroom.

A must-read for any English teacher!
As a first year teacher, this book saved my life on more than one occasion. Like most new teachers, I had been taught a great deal of educational theory, but was given very little practical advice about arranging my classroom, managing my class space, and making lesson plans. Brandvik's book provides a ton of useful suggestions and ideas that can be put to use in any classroom. I highly recommend this book to any teacher, from those in their first year who are hungry for new ideas to those who have been in the profession a while and want to rejuvinate their methods.

From the Escambray to the Congo : In the Whirlwind of the Cuban Revolution
Published in Hardcover by Pathfinder Press (2002)
Authors: Mary-Alice Waters and Victor Dreke
Amazon base price: $50.00
Average review score:

First-hand testimony of the end of the Batista dictatorship
Written by a soldier who fought in the Cuban revolution, Victor Dreke's From The Escambray To The Congo is a personal memoir and first-hand testimony of the end of the Batista dictatorship and the attempts to create a better government in its place. An insert of black-and-white photographs adds a visual touch to the gripping experiences both on and off the battlefield described in this memorable, gut-wrenching, up close and personal account of the modern history of a nation. From The Escambray To The Congo is a welcome and much appreciated addition to the growing library of personal memoirs and eye-witness accounts of the Cuban Revolution and its aftermath.

A lesson on how to bring down racism
In New Zealand, politicians, government agencies, and many businesses like to crow about how much they oppose discrimination of any kind. However, most working people who come up against racist practices know there is big gap between what these institutions say and do when it comes to dealing with instances of racism.

"From the Escambray to the Congo" is a powerfully account of how after the 1959 victory of Fidel Castro's 26 July movement over the Batista dictatorship in Cuba, the new revolutionary government set out close to gap between the word and the deed.

How the Cuban government went about eradicating Jim Crow type racism, is told through the words of Victor Dreke, a leading participant of Cuba's revolutionary movement for half a century. The capitalist foundations that propped up racism in Cuba collapsed under the weight of the hundreds of thousand workers, peasants and young people - both black and white - coming to the realisation that racism was incompatible with the new society they were fighting to transform.

As a young teenager Dreke was advised by his father to "Study and get an education and don't mess with strikes or any of that; it won't get you anywhere. Besides, that stuff's not for blacks." Fortunately Dreke did not follow his fathers advice and threw himself into revolutionary activity. Beginning as a high school activist, then Rebel Army fighter. He was a commander in the fight to root out the counterrevolutionary bands operating in central Cuba and has been an internationalist combatant and representative of the Cuban revolution in Africa.

What comes across strongly for me is how the Cuba's determination to end racism in it's own country was inextricably linked to the liberation of the Africa continent from imperialist exploitation

For the millions of young Victor Dreke's - male or female - in the mines, factories and on the high school and university campuses around the world - this book is for you.

A Living Revolution
Read this small book for a series of snapshots of what it was like to be a participant in the Cuban revolution that triumphed in January 1959. From a high school activist under the Batista dictatorship, Victor Dreke joined the Rebel Army and fought in many campaigns. The Escambray mountains in central Cuba were the scene of a bloody five-year-long attempt by Washington-organized groups to undermine the new regime. Like the Contras in Nicaragua 20 years later, these 'Bandidos' murdered literacy volunteers, health workers, and peasants who backed the revolutionary government. Dreke was a leader in the military and militia campaigns that wiped them out. His description of the Cuban mid-1960s contingent to aid revolutionary fighters in the Congo complements Che Guevara's own recently published account of this. Dreke notes how the Congo campaign, though not a success at the time, paved the way for critically important Cuban efforts to aid African liberation struggles, such as the decisive victory at Cuito Cuanavale, Angola, against South African forces in 1988. As with all Pathfinder titles, the well-thought-out maps, footnotes and glossary in this book help the reader with unfamiliar names and events. Numerous photos bring Dreke's story even more to life.

Collector's Encyclopedia of R.S. Prussia: Fourth Series
Published in Hardcover by Collector Books (1994)
Author: Mary Frank Gaston
Amazon base price: $24.95

excellent book for all audiences
This is an excellent book! I teach an antique porcelain class and found it useful to gain expertise quickly. This book is successfully used by appraisers, dealers, collectors and teachers. I have read many porcelain books, and this one was one of the easiest to read and understand. It was well organized and contained a good variety of the styles and characteristics of RS Prussia.

All four volumes are needed to identify pieces, although Ms. Gaston provides a shape guide to help date pieces not pictured.

What I'd like to see in the next book is 1) clarification on how the marks were made, i.e., printed over or under glaze, 2) the types of glazes used (and were pieces refired) 3)repeat of history with changes incorporated, verses the new and updated info section. The history only appears fully in the ist volume.

What a Great Reference!
Okay- I admit it. I did not have a room full of R.S.Prussia china to reference when I bought this book. I just loved the pictures and had to have it! I can dream a little dream and imagine finding a portrait bowl or vase at a small town flea market for next to nothing...and then I can look up its worth and smile as I place my prize in the china cabinet ( a coveted possession NOT for resale!).

A reviewer from Ohio
Wonderful book with full color pictures. Also pictures of the marks. Great price guide! Will use this over & over.

Dreamland: Nana's Review of a Favorite Book!
I have purchased four copies of this book, one for myself and one for each of my children who have children. I was immediately drawn to the soft colors, peaceful pictures in gentle tones, and the rhythm of the words. The children (and their animal friends) pictured going off to dreamland are from different countries. Going to sleep is pictured and told as a gentle, peaceful, safe and enjoyable experience. The moon and milky way are wonderfully illustrated. I just want to go there! I hope this book comes back in print because I have more children with children and friends with children and it is a perfect gift. The text is in gentle words and wonderful rhythm. The illustrations almost bring tears to my eyes. My grandchildren never tire of having me read this book. I never tire of reading it to them.

I loved it
This is the most beautifully written and illustrated book I have ever seen. It makes a perfect gift for moms to be!

A MUST HAVE! MAKES YOUR CHILD WANT TO GO TO SLEEP! YES!
This book is truly one-of-a-kind; it is the stuff "dreams are made of!" It makes me smile and yawn reading to my daughter most every night! She actually looks forward to going to sleep as much as I do!

It is a child's Fantasy book. It truly entices your child to want to go to sleep in such a beautiful way! The premise of the story is when you fall asleep you enter into a dreamland--a magical place where you can fly in the clouds, play with other boys and girls from around the world, ride on the moon and stars and into the arms of.... ( it's a surprise).

Another thing that makes this book so special is that it comes in your choice of pink or blue lettering. So if you want to give it as a baby gift to someone you have a more personalized gift.

I highly recommend this book to every one! Every child loves beautiful pictures like these! Julia Noonan, the illustrator, is remarkable! Hats off to you Julia! Also of course, thanks to Mary C. Carpenter for sending children "to a really good place: Dreamland...wide open for possibilities."

Earthquake at Dawn
Kristiana Gregory really brings out Edith Irvine as a devoted photographer. Even in the midst of all the turmoil, she snaps 60 photos, possibly more! In this true-to-life novel, the famous San Francisco earthquake takes place, however, the quake is not the worst that happens! The fire that the quake created was. It lasted three days and killed an estimated five to ten thousand people. The mayor exploded dynamite to try to get rid of the fire, but the dynamite only created more. This novel also illustrates the annoying floor length dresses that the ladies of 1906 had to wear and the automobiles of Daisy's time. In some books earthquakes are made up just for entertainment. Not this one! This earthquake was real. The first shock was on April 18, 1906 and was recorded at 5:12:05 a.m. and it lasted for 45 seconds. There were 27 earthquakes that were actually recorded that day. Mary Exa Atkins Campbell told the earthquake's story.

An excellent historical fiction book
I really enjoyed the book Earthquake at Dawn. It's about the 1906 San Fransisco earthquake/fire that happened at dawn (hence the name Earthquake at Dawn). Even though it is historical fiction, it had a lot of true things that made it incredibly believable. Kristina Gregory definitely made the story good by adding some subplots that kept your interest. The subplots were real things too, like Edith and Daisy getting separated from their father, and Molly dying of lack of healthcare. This was a really good, captivating book which I think many people will cherish for years to come.

A book I couldn't put down
This was an excellent book. I choose to read it for my summer book reports that I have to do and most of the time I dread reading the books but not this. I also usually have no trouble putting books down but I couldn't put this one down. The book is about Edith and her assisant Daisy who are going to Europe but stop in San Francisco and they get stuck there because of an earthquake. They meet a lot of people and have some adventures while trying to find Edith's father

Life-Changing
All I can say is Emerson changed my life. Once I read "Self-Reliance" in school, his writing sparked my interest. I read a few more of his essays, then became "addicted" to this book. Despite its length, I read all of his essays and poems in 6 months. I highly recommend this book to anyone. Emerson is a genius. Everyone should read at least one of Emerson's essays in their lifetime. They are amazing.

Inspirational Collection of Pure Brilliance
After perusing the wonderful assortment of Emerson's work in this marvelous compendium, I was inspired by the sheer genius of this man. I found his work inspirational because it reminded me how insightful and profound we humans can be. As we go through the day-to-day of modern life, it has become apparent that our culture believes the more basic you speak the more real you are being---well after reading Emerson, modern "realness" can take a hike. Here's to the intellect!

Buy this book, sit back and read what thoughts we are capable of forging, and enjoy!

Life altering
After reading the essay, "Self Reliance," I had a new perspective on my own intellectual capacity.

Emerson's faith in reason, truth, and the potential of the individual, are inspiring.

These essays are a great introduction to learning to trust yourself to find your own spiritual path.

He is religious with out being dogmatic. He wonderfully marries the intellect with wonder. mmmm.

Highly recommended.
