A WONDERFUL OVERVIEW OF EVERYDAY LIFE IN NEW KINGDOM EGYPT
For anyone interested in knowing how was it like to live under the rule of the great New Kingdom Pharaohs of Egypt, this is the book. With grace and elegant style, Dr. James gifted us with a wonderful overview of everyday life taking as evidence the registers from tomb and temple wallpaintings and inscriptions, from which he has taken nice and amusing "bites of reality". There are texts from private and official letters and bussiness-documents; everything was masterly handed by the great British Egyptologist, so as to let us recover a lively glimpse of ancient Egyptians and their way-of-life in those golden ages.

Very Practical, Enjoyable Book
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this devotional book. There are 9 studies which each include a topic (such as "Focusing on God's Character"), a bible passage illustration the topic, and a sample prayer. There are also many prompts for group discussion. This book gave me confidence that I was praying more accurately and more in accordance to God's will; therefore it made me even more bold to approach the throne of our God in prayer.

A superb introduction
An excellent introduction to fund raising; without doubt the best available. Rosso is clear and concise in this brief and easily digested text. This is not a "how to" book. You will not learn the details of running a capital campaign or conducting prospect research. Rather, Rosso provides an overview of the elements of fund raising. The major laws of fund raising science are presented along with the less well defined knowledge areas of fund raising art. He discusses topics including sequential solicitation, the donor data base, and using a gift range chart. But also communicated are the human elements which are essential to success in this field. The account is highly personal, drawing on years of practical experience. The recollections are well chosen and thoughtfully integrated into the text. Although this book will have most value for those with little or no prior knowledge of its subject, I suspect that even the experienced fund raiser will obtain benefit from its reading.

great fun
This book, which was apparently one of a series of 4 such books (although I never saw the other 3), is a perfect example of this sort of puzzle book. I liked it even more than the quite enjoyable and much better known "Crime and Puzzlement" books, but is otherwise very similar. The two big differences are that the puzzles are illustrated with photos instead of line drawings, and the puzzles are quite a bit more difficult (although still easy enough to do in one sitting). If you think that you would like such a book, you'll like this one.

Give sharks a Chance !
Although this book came out in the 1970s it is still one of the most important and influential research documents of it's type. Indeed, it is now considered mandatory reading and it's easy to see why. American naval scientist H.David Baldridge became a key figure in the area of shark research when he established the International Shark Attack File back in the late 50s and early 60s. This fascinating, easy to read book succeeds on all levels. It is filled with interesting facts and figures , theories and stories. Entertaining and very educational. Give sharks a Chance !

Queer Sensibility and Today's "America"
This collection of essays clusters under the idea that the characteristic repetition one finds in American popular culture arrives by way of rituals of "imitation and initiation" in the lives of sexual outsiders [i.e., queers]. These essays are intelligent, provocative, even beautiful analyses of such 20th-century culture-makers as Henry James, Joseph Cornell, Andy Warhol, David Lynch, Kenneth Anger, Maria Montez, Jack Smith, and Vaslav Nijinsky. Each essay is chattily vernacular enough to allow the reader to forget that it's academic scholarship (good for your brain) and not just plain fun. Gossipy tidbits like Cornell's fondness for Kool-Aid and little girls enliven Moon's observations of the artist's memory-saturated work. The way Moon re-homosexualizes an apparently de-homosexualized text such as the film MIDNIGHT COWBOY should inspire a wholly new approach in gay and lesbian criticism. And I thought the treatment of Charles Ludlam's and Ethyl Eichelberger's theatre, largely ignored in academic circles up to now, a fitting climax to a thoroughly enjoyable and illuminating book. A SMALL BOY AND OTHERS deserves a wide and appreciative audience. It offers an elaboration of and a correction to current understandings of the role "camp" has played in shaping contemporary American culture.

A difficult, but ultimately richly rewarding read
As a 23 year-old, I write this review from the perspective of a dedicated, but relatively inexperienced, literary scholar. I found Hale's book an enlightening and engaging read (indeed, saying it is inspirational would not be going to far). Due to my limited familiarity with certain thinkers examined within the text (such as Bahktin, Genette) I found the book somewhat difficult to follow at times, but this was a result of my inadequate background in literary theory rather than any inherents failures on the part of the book or author. But to say that I didn't fully understand the book is not to say that reading it was not a wonderful and thought provoking experience. As inexperienced a scholar as I am, I still understood and appreciated most of the book and would like to unequivocally praise what Dr. Hale has accomplished. I would recommend the book to anyone interested in narrative theory, though beginners (such as myself) must be prepared for a demanding text that will only prove intellectually productive in proportion to the amount of effort and concentration applied in the reading of it. All in all, a wonderful book. I eagerly await the author's next effort.

A stunning series of informative Roy Vickers photo essays.
Spirit Transformed: A Journey From Tree To Totem is another stunning portrayal of the work of First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers. A series of beautiful colored photo essays are complemented by the chapters describing the emerging of a 30 foot totem pole of cedar crafted by the artist. Also included is the real-life story of the artist himself. No stranger to pain, Vickers has much to teach. In the end, he is a voice for many: "The winter of our discontent is gone. And, for me, the time of being a victim of wrongdoing is gone. It is not time to be a victim anymore. It is time to be a leader; it is time to be a supporter. It is time to show others that it is possible to come through everything we have endured, and, in the words of Chief Dan George, 'to build our race into the strongest, proudest segment of our society.' And so, with the birth of the Salmon Totem, a journey came to an end that had begun eight centuries ago when that cedar had first sprouted in the good earth of the Pacheenaht people. It was joyful and sad at the same time. When you think of living, if you are centered, if you have achieved that balance, you feel both joy and pain. It is a balance of life and death, red and black. I think that is where those tears of joy come from (p.77)." Not only will Spirit Transformed share great beauty of spirit with each reader, it shows the resources of unimaginable strength and faith to reanimate the generation to come. Recommended for general audiences.
