Excellent book on Educational theory...
Actually this is the first and only book I have seen written on Education and Evolutionary Epistemology. Karl Popper's theories applied to the field of Education.

This is a refreshing change. Education Policy Makers should be forced to read this book.

More people should know Brooke for his prose; it is elegant.
Although "Letters From America" was actually a series of articles that represents the only time in Rupert Brooke's life when he had a paying job, they work well as a book. Written at a juncture in the poet's life when he suffered from considerable emotional strain in his personal relationships, "Letters" is his record of the world beyond England. It is perceptive, elegant writing. Very personal, very interesting (not only for its picture of North America in the early part of this century, but also for its picture of Brooke, with all of his foibles and prejudices).Had he lived through WWI, Rupert Brooke could have been an outstanding prose writer, as "Letters" suggests. Unfortunately, it was not to be.

Interesting for Tudor Scholars
While I wouldn't recommend this book for the casual reader who wants to know more about King Henry VIII, for scholars, it's wonderful to be able to see the original source documents that are so often briefly quoted in biographies.

The Life of Henry Brulard (Penguin Classics)

Authors: Stendhal and John Sturrock

goosebumps
Who would think that an unfinished autobiography could be so good? But despite its rough edges and the odd passage of interest only to the author, the Life of Henry Brulard is very good indeed, and as moving as The Red and the Black. Early in the Life, Stendhal describes the pleasure of reading Florentine goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini's memoirs, so fresh, he notes, that they seem to have been written yesterday. The same could be said for Stendhal's own autobiography.

SIGHT BEYOND THE PHYSICAL
It is obvious that the present day photographer, John Dugdale, has been greatly influenced by the 19th century Transcendentalist writer, Henry David Thoreau. In this superb book of Dugdale's photographs and selections from Thoreau's journals, it is as if the writings were done specifically for the images, not over 100 years previously.

Dugdale has, for many years, been one of my favorite photographers. He uses a process for printing his photographs called cyanotype which was invented during the time that Thoreau lived and worked. The wonderful elegance and simplicity of his subjects and images fits perfectly with Thoreau's philosophies of life. Dugdale, because of HIV, is 80% blind, but, somehow, uses what sight he has combined with a pure spirituality and sight beyond the physical to create images of rare beauty.

So, we see a single rose alongside these words of Thoreau: "Love is the burden of all Nature's odes..." A still-life of flowers, two birds, which may be made of milk glass, and a human hand are viewed with Thoreau's "Perhaps what most moves us in winter is some reminiscence of far-off summer...;" a solitary man with one hand against an old, tall tree by a pond and a field are perfect for Thoreau's "Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each..." And perhaps most moving of all, part of the back of a nude man is used with Thoreau's "My life was ecstasy. In youth, before I lost any of my senses, I can remember that I was all alive, and inhabited my body with inexpressible satisfaction..."

The book begins with two short, wonderfully written appreciations of the artists by Frank Crocitto.

This collection is magnificent beyond any contemporary words. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

An impeccable work by a noted historian
History buffs will find a wealth of unique information by a writer with a special viewpoint and perspective on the nation's history. Many of these pieces have been long out of print, making them a special delight to find here. Ranging from Horgan's descriptions fo the hstory and landscape surrounding the Rio Grande to visits with Stravinsky, this is a complex, rich book. He makes history come alive, recreating the lives and souls of the people who lived before us.

Two different types of love stories
Opals From the Outback tells two types of love stories while giving me some action and adventure and teaching us about life in Australia. The story does not drag like many long books do.

It also discusses the intrinsic value of various items. It is good for discussion as well as wonderfully entertaining, yet very light, read.

People From Other Worlds: Descent Into the Spirit Realm
This book is a great example of late 19th Century spirit literature. The Author, Col. Henry Olcott, wrote this book after visiting two brothers from Vermont that purportedly could contact and communicate with the dead. Olcott visited the brother's small farm in Vermont, and stayed for a period of three weeks. During that time, he saw around 400 spirit's materialize right in front of his eyes. He drew illustrations of every apparition, and included them in this book. Any person interested in spirit communication, or the history of spiritualism, should read this book first before reading any other. It was a valuable resource for me.
